This review is for day use in rec area and not camping. Stopped here on our day trip around the island. This seems like a great place to be outside and enjoy a beach. It was a Thursday afternoon and it was not busy! Beautiful sandy beach and tons of shade and places to lay out or sit. The bathroom facilities was good. Honestly I can't stand the crowds so if I ever stay on Oahu over the other islands I'd probably pick this area to stay away from crowds of Honolulu and north shore area. read more

Very beautiful beach and it wasn't crowded at all. We luckily found parking in their small lot. I believe it's about maybe 15 spots? There's a bathroom and rinse station and a very short 1 minute walk from the parking lot to the beach. The water is so pretty and had moderate sized to calm waves, easy to swim in. We were here for almost 3 hours and the temperature was perfect even in the sun with no shade. read more

For a person who's lived most of her life on Oahu, I'm surprised I've never heard of Malaekahana Beach before. This beach is absolutely stunning! It's perfect for romantic strolls, fun in the sun with your kids, swimming, body surfing, camping (yes, there's a campground site!), and even shore fishing. It was not over crowded with people. And the ocean when I was there was calm and inviting. This beach definitely sends serene vibes and is somewhere to go to get away from the city and leave your busy thoughts behind. The only issue is there is very limited parking, and the parking lot is locked in the evening. So you will need to leave the parking lot before it closes unless you want your vehicle to stay over night. I was told this is a very popular place to go camping and has a year out wait list (yikes!) But once you see this beach, you'll know exactly why so many believe it's worth the wait! read more

This place is amazing because we had option to do vehicle camping and we had a van and also a truck with a group of us all together and everything was laid out specifically instructions were easily to be understood, and the directions were easy, especially going in and out with through the gate arm was an easy, smooth transition. We had a lot of fun we went fishing and we were 20 to 30 feet away from the beach. Because a lot of fish and grilled it right on the grill basically from ocean to grill super fresh and the ocean was super clear one of those where you jump in the ocean and you come out with salt on your body so that just goes to tell you that the area is clean and not many people are in the area because the water is clean and very salty. The interesting part is there is a lot of people there a different sections in different zones and everybody's all friendly. You can hear them talk you can hear the music it was like a village everyone All camping having a good time, roasting, marshmallows, kids, walking around and running around. It was like a village right after Ocean, thank you for the experience and looking forward to another camping expedition again. read more

A beautiful place located in Kahuku. They book up fast so I was lucky to get a spot for my family and I. We rented cabin 13. You get partial beach view, blocked by a tree that has a shower under it. There is another cabin about 15 ft away, I was worried about noise from another family but, thankfully when we stayed there it was empty. Our cabin was nice. A pair of bunk beds and a room with another bed. The only down fall is our room didn't lock. Someone one must have broken it and who ever repaired it didn't do a good job you can easily pull it back open. Thankful I packed a stick that was able to be used for extra security on the track of the door. Otherwise the nights were amazing for star gazing, the beaches are clean with minimal people, and a much needed vacation for family bonding and relaxing. Would recommend again. Also, they have camp cats and one became our guest while we stayed, no big deal we're animals lovers. I must say they have a donation box in the front at check in for the cats but, these cats seem a little skinny and not fixed maybe something they can work on. read more

I've been coming here for yearssss!!!! Great place for the family to meet at because there's usually a lot of parking and there's just so much space to play outdoor activities and the beach is nice. It is a beautiful beach, great for camping, swimming and even fishing. I do not recommend coming here in a small vehicle because it can be very challenging, just because the parking lot area has a lot of dips/ditches/potholes(whatever you want to call it) that will damage your car if you're speeding. So, GO SLOW!!!! Be cautious because some dips are deep and some are wide so it's like playing a game. Tip(s): - bring bug spray (lots of mosquitos) - you might be able to see some peacocks :D - pack well, there's a bit of a walk before getting to the beach and I'm sure you dont want to make more than 1 trip - there are bathrooms but depending on where you "set camp" you may have to walk far. read more

It's not super crowded which leaves time to just chill. You can walk out to goat island in the morning when tides are low. But watch out for big waves. You can also kayak or bodyboard out in high tides. There are plenty of birds, but most of the island is roped off. By the beach, there are plenty of camping spots. Not a bad place to camp with family and friends. Located in Kahuku, with lots of beach!! If you like roughing it, this is da place. There are cabins but if not you can just put up a tent. They have bathrooms which is quite clean and not at all bad. 1 stall was plugged with 2 working stalls. 2 of the stalls had curtains that when the wind blows everyone in bathroom can see you doing ur business. Toilet paper is provided but no seat covers. Hand soap not provided either but someone was kind enough to put on one of the sinks. Pretty mellow and quiet with families barbque and chillaxin! The camp grounds do have sinks for you to wash your dishes. Killer views on the beach! Nice place and definitely coming back fo sure! read more

I'm a sucker for clean beaches and a good ocean breeze. Definitely my kinda beach. There's waves here and rocks in the sand which is probably the only reason from my ranking it to a 5. However the sand is fine, good place to chillax and have a bbq at. There's a shower area with 2 shower heads and a restroom as well. It's in kahuku so you can go get some kahuku shrimp before, after, or both! The environment is nature-like because there are a few trees around. Good for surfing, and also pretty good to catch the sunset! There's a parking lot for the beach and it's not usually packed, or at least for the times I've been there. Bring your family or friends, it'll be awesome. I recommend you to try it out, it's better than your mainstream beaches haha. read more

Absolutely gorgeous scenery, but sadly dirty... I was shocked and stunned by the amount of plastic and trash all around. We only go to north shore beaches but this one made me want to cry it was so dirty. I collect sea glass so I'm no trash prude by any means. The waves were really kicking the day we were here and it looked super fun for board activities. The cabins looked cute. There were signs everywhere about high crime/thefts which was a deterrent to staying longer. Looks like a locals only spot and not at all crowded. read more

Just found this place while driving around the island, and it's a new favorite spot! Plenty of parking, and very few people. The sand is soft and clean, and some spot towards the northern end are very well shaded. The facilities are small but impeccably clean, probably because it's so isolated. All the room you could want on the sand. Water was a bit chilly and rough for swimming, but we picked a bad weather day. read more

It's a relatively big recreation area on the North Shore, and there are plenty of places for camping or having picnics. I went here in Fall 2012 and it was somewhat crowded. There are also some paths that lead out to the beach itself. Lots of trees and shady areas as well. read more

This is a picture-perfect crescent beach with fine white sand. Just be careful near the bathrooms because there are also a lot of homeless people that live in tents here, so there is visible drug use occurring. read more

Randomly driving around North Shore and decided to pull into this beach/state park. Its February and still winter here in Hawaii, so when you drive in it looks like you're transported to fall in New York, with the red, orange and amber leaves falling. Then you drive a bit more to the parking lot and BAM, you're in hawaii. The scenery and landscape here never fails to amaze me! This beach looked like a great spot for camping, decent sized bathrooms, picnic tables and fire pits. I think we will come back soon! read more

Great place for a family beach day. Lots of shaded areas to set up tables. Also, wasn't too crowded. My puppy loved playing in her own grass and sand area! She was able to stretch her legs out! If you want to have parties, I'm sure this is the great place to do it. Lots of parking too! read more

The last two times I went back home, it was raining here, but still a great experience. To have good company, a plate of garlic shrimp from Romy's, and a cooler of beer to sit back and relax all day without a ton of people crowding around you. This moment is what I miss the most. read more

Fun beach to be at. Not much people! Very private comparing it from other beaches nearby. Alot of in shore corals so snorkling is fun!! Waves are not that strong. Terrible beach. Waikiki is so much better. Definitely go to Waikiki for surfing. This beach is dirty, crowded, rocky, and windy. Lots of blue bubbles too! Trust me you don't want to get stung by one of those suckers. Don't waste your time heading to the North Shore, traffic is a nightmare! read more

Went camping for the weekend! The camp grounds are beautiful, the beach is secluded(for Oahu) and gorgeous! Bathrooms are clean, with indoor showers. DLNR police stopped by 2xs to make sure no problems. TIP: Be careful and watch where you walk the path to the bathroom has lots of rocks, I stubbed my toe pretty badly and sliced the tip of it off. Luckily I had first aid kit in my truck. read more

Fellow campers were robbed right before we got there. One had his tent slashed open with a knife and had everything taken. The other two had their phones stolen from their tent. We reserved a tent prior to coming along with an airmatress, pump, camp stove, lighter fluid and coals. We saw online that they close at 7... When we got there at 5:30, the office was closed and we could not get all of the items we needed. They did leave a tent and an airmatress out for us but didn't include the air pump! We were also told we would be able to buy ice but of course couldn't bc the store was closed. When we went to get ice the next day we were told that they were out of ice and wouldn't be getting anymore until next week...?! We ended up just packing up our stuff and leaving right away. Bad vibes, felt majorly taken advantage of. They did refund us for our camp fees and tent rental but it didn't make up for the 4 hour trip it took us to get there and back. The woman there did not even apologize for all of the misleading information we were given. Also there is not much of a beach there. It's covered in wood/branches, maybe 2 feet of space to lay down part of a towel. The water was really rough when we were there, no ideal for swimming at all. read more

This is a nice beach that isn't too crowded. Lots of people camping. There is a shallow water path from the shore out to Goat Island that you can wade through, which is actually pretty cool. The island looks far away but you literally walk from the shore, through the ocean, and bam, after about 10 minutes you are on the island. Just make sure you bring some water shoes ($7 at Walmart) because the waist deep "path" is rocky. read more

Big fan because its like you are the only people out there if you are camping! I was the first one up on the beach (so I think) both days I camped, watched a beautiful sunrise! Great small non harsh(if that makes sense) waves for a beginning surfer like me can learn without getting completely pounded. We always go camping at Malaekahana and this is the beach at the campgrounds. I'm sure there are other ways to the beach but the only way I have even gotten there is to park in the campgrounds lot and walk through the camp to one of the many beach paths. Our friend Brad recently celebrated his birthday with a camping trip so we were up there for the weekend. Walking down the path to the beach is a total escape. We brought drinks, towels, cameras & of course our dog and headed down for some fun. I like that this beach is big enough that you have lots of personal space, I find everyone can set up a space & it almost feels like a private beach party. The boys brought fishing poles & went in the water to try & catch some stuff. I prefer to stay in the shallow end, the waves are a little rough. A big pet peeve of mine about the water here is how rocky it is! Its super shallow but if you try to walk too far in, you encounter some gnarly rocks so you kinda have to swim if you want to go deep. This beach is perfect though for playing in the little waves, tanning, hanging with friends or family & running with your dog. Everyone is super friendly since is is connected with campground and its lovely to not be surrounded by tourists. It's also quite clean compared to most beaches. If you're looking for a different North Shore beach experience, this is the beach to hit up! read more

This is your typical Hawaiian beach. The physical beauty is impressive. But you have to watch your automobile because property crimes are common. Also, you have to be aware of dogs. There are many unleashed and dangerous dogs on the beaches in Hawaii. And if you are Caucasian, be prepared to fight. Local hoodlums go out of their way to harass others, particularly if you have light skin. read more

So this is a good beach if you like rustic and not a lot of people. There is one section of beach where all of the flotsam and jetsam seems to accumulate which is not good. There is a place right here where you can rent really low cost next to the beach bungalows, but we could not find out the name of the place. Good for kids with boogie boards read more

Great little beach with small waves for beginner surfers. On site parking (easy on a weekday).

Great place to teach surfing and for a great quick run on the beach. It gets the north wrap around or the east swells.
