If you take a drive to the west side all the way at the end of road you'll find Yokohama bay. Gates open at 6am. A lot of people hike, some fish and most just enjoy the sun sand and beautiful view. Sometimes you'll catch monk seals on the sand - please stay 50 feet away! And sometimes you'll see a pod of dolphins, some doing flips too. read more

Wow. I wanted to find a remote beach I had never visited to quiet my mind and relax on my birthday. Getting here was a drive but well worth it. Keep going all the way until just before the road ends, park anywhere, and make your way down to a wide open stretch of perfect powdery sand and surf with probably no one else in sight. It's not a good spot to swim but it's the beach you want for solitude and beauty with the mountains in the background and the fact that it's not a typical tourist spot due to its location. I found it online and it was worth the round trip for the few hours I spent here. Bring some snacks and a book or your headphones and you're sorted. Highly recommend. read more

Drove up here from Honolulu today. It's an hour drive. Lots of beach once you are within about 15 minutes of Yokohama Bay. You drive to till you hit the road closure and park alongside the road. You can walk up to Yokohama Bay and check out some tide pools. Not lots of life but it's beautiful. Very big waves, strong tides and rocks kept us up on the sand but the view is fabulous. It's quite deserted. We've only seen an occasional person or two. The water is clear but a bit colder than the west side of the island. If you are looking to swim, this isn't the place but if you want to walk, see some beautiful scenery and sit on the sand, this is your spot. read more

Yokohama Bay aka "Yokes" by locals is a gorgeous beach way on the west side of Oahu. You cant miss it because you just stay on Farrington Hwy past Nanakuli, Maile, Waianae, Makaha all the way till the very end of the road and you'll end up there. Locals love this beach because it's not crowded and when the swells are up it's a good place to body board and surf. ***NOTE this beach is NOT a place to swim or surf unless you are proficient. I would not recommend this for beginners because of the strong undercurrent and powerful surf at times. Although there is a lifeguard on duty be cautious and read any warning signs if they're up for strong undercurrents and high surf. There is a bathroom at this beach and plenty of parking. Be smart and dont bring valuables and be considerate of others respect the beauty of the area. I may not recommend this to tourists because it's quite a far drive from town approx 1.5 hours but if you have the time it's a gorgeous beach to see and the sunsets here are amazing! read more

What a beautiful beach. If you want to get away from the crowded of Waikiki Beach to a secluded beach and maybe with a few locals. I highly recommend taking this hour and 15 minutes drive to Yokohama Bay. You won't be disappointed and don't be disencourage on the drive up. Because you will see a lot of homeless and a lot of abandon cars. Just keep on driving until the road ends. Your reward will be a 2 mile stretch of nice white sand and beautiful crystal clear pool water to yourselves. This was our favorite beach on Oahu Make sure you bring a lot of sunblock because there is no shade at this beach and no restroom and shower. One of our highlights of the trip. Fantastic beach all the way at the end of the road going west. I used to come here to bodyboard once in awhile back in the day when there was a good swell. Nowadays I just make the occasional trip when I have friends visiting from out of town and they want to go to a beach that's away from the toursity spots. It's a long sandy beach surrounded by mountains, very idyllic setting. It can get crowded on weekends but the beach is so big, you still feel like there's hardly anyone there. This side of the island will get many of the surf swells so it's fairly consistent. West/northwest swells as well as big south swell wrap arounds. When the waves are calm, it's a great place to snorkel with a lot of sea life to look at. Last night, A friend wanted me to take a picture for her to hang up in her living room so I came to take some pictures of the night sky and hopefully get some good milky way shots. This end of the island is in one of the darker zones of Oahu so you can see more of the stars in the sky. Unfortunately the moon was a bit too bright and the clouds didn't really cooperate. I'll have to try again next month when there's a new moon. read more

YELP 365 CHALLENGE 2014-(150/365) "Surf Session at Yokes" Situated WAAAAY at the end of Waianae and the beginning of Kaena Point, Yokohama Bay(properly known as Keawa'ula Bay), or "Yoke's" as the locals would call it is a beautiful stretch of sand, sea, and mountains that depending on the time of year offers killer waves, great fishing/diving/snorkeling, and makes for a great day out with family and friends. When its flat, the snorkeling conditions are beautiful and you can also relax by the tide pools along the rocks. When the surf is pumping, be very careful of the strong currents, mean backwash, and most of all, do not drop in on anybody's wave! Remember folks, this ain't Waikiki! Respect the locals, and when in doubt, DO NOT paddle out! Not sure if people still camp or do overnight fishing trips here during the summer, but if you do so, mosquito repellent is also a must! I learned the hard way when I was a kid and got eaten alive, I'm talking hundreds of bites on my arms and legs, luckily not on my face!?!? Other things to think about: Food: Pack a lunch, drinks and snacks before coming here, remember, you're pretty far out there, even from Ko'Olina...don't leave a mess, pick up after yourselves Sunscreen/Sun Protection: It gets HOT here, sand included, no trees, shaded areas. Bring an umbrella/tent to avoid the direct UV rays....STAY HYDRATED! Toiletries/First Aid Kit: Not to sure about the upkeep from the City and County regarding the public restrooms there, but just come prepared for minor injuries, or when nature calls. ALOHA!!! Pretty secluded. If you're staying around ko'olina then it's only about 30-45 minutes away depending on stoplights and traffic. Some people drive really slow and I'm not use to it. If you don't like big crowds come and chill here for the day. The waves do get big at times so be careful. Even though we were at the stop of the little sand hill the water was able to reach the top of there sometimes so we needed to move back a little. read more

An amazing beach but it's a long drive if you're in Honolulu. The drive can be 75 minutes and depending on traffic could take longer. The beach is on the Waianae side of Ka'ena Point. Some may see dolphins when they snorkel but usually people would get there between 7-9 am. The beach is huge, there's a bathroom with outdoor showers to wash the sand off of you. Always can bring spike ball, volleyball, frisbee and other beach fun activities. The green mountains in the background and the blue ocean has tons of picturesque locations. If you don't like great sand with very minimal rocks and great picturesque views of the mountain range, then you will hate this beach. This beach has it ALL. What ever you are looking for I can guarantee it's here. Took the hour and some change drive up (my daughter hated how long the drive was but once we got there she did not want to leave) and was not disappointed in the slightest. We went on a windy day so the waves were great and had a little area for the kids to enjoy also. Parking is across from the beach on the road its self and once you cross the street you are welcomed with perfect white sand. Tracking over the sand, you will eventually come to the beach area. It was pretty empty when I came, maybe a couple or two. I can't comment on the restrooms as this beach has a lot of negative reviews here, my review is strictly about the beach itself. If you find it, you'll know...this beach is absolutely breath taking and hardly anyone is ever here. Enjoy the view, empty beach, and stay until sunset if you can. Be sure not to leave anything in your car that is valuable (you should never do this anywhere). There are bathrooms and life guards at this beach, and plenty of space so please don't sit right on top of someone...this happened to us by some tourists. Beach etiquette, if you're not sure if you're too close then you're probably too close. There is a "hike" down at the end of the beach to ka'ena point (the western most tip of land on the island), its flat and about 3.5 miles. If you go, bring water and sunscreen because 3.5 miles in the Hawaii sun and heat can really drain you. Oh, and be sure to bring your camera, its beautiful. One more tip...no dogs are allowed on the trail since there is a bird sanctuary at the end that you can visit. If you bring your dog you're most likely to get caught since there are people that patrol the trail. Other than that Yoke's is one of the most amazing beaches on the island, so enjoy! read more

This is definitely the place to see the sunset. It is the furthest west point on the island. The beach was not very crowded and featured amazing views. This is the first time I've ever looked across the ocean and been like, "wow, it looks like it curves around" Kind of that 'flat' Earth concept. The sunset was amazing and the waves were beautiful. The stop we were at had rocks in it, so I don't know about swimming around per say but sitting on the beach and just taking it in was awesome. There were signs up not to camp...so, of course, we didn't camp there *wink, wink* So if you were going to break rules and camp, I think this may be a great place to head to before the sunset, drink *water* while the sun sets, bring some snacks to munch on and hang out with some friends before falling asleep. Pretty beach and water but very rocky water and shoreline. Not able to get into the water. The lifeguard got into the water to cool off but it did not look safe. The beach was also very hilly so it was hard to set up. Also, because the beach is so remote and far away from things it almost felt unsafe due to what you had to drive past to get there. I only stayed for about an hour since I couldn't get into the water and there is no natural shade. read more

06/17/11 (last visited) If you are on vacation and your destination was O'ahu but you want to get away from the touristy beaches in Waikiki, this West O'ahu beach might be your new "secret refuge". We went on a weekday and had the entire place to ourselves. The beach wasn't overly crowded and we didn't have to wait for a parking space. The beach is Big and Beautiful. The majestic mountain backdrop is one of a kind and the beach is clean. This beach park is the last one on the Waianae coast before you reach Kaena Pt. This is not Waikiki. You probably will not find a single tourist, just locals. There's parking, bathroom and changing facilities and a shower for rinsing off the sand. Bring toilet paper, just in case there's none there. That is really the only discouraging feature of the beach. You can also hike around the tip of the Island if you are the athletic type. Just park your car near the life guard station and hike or bike around the tip of Oahu. Yokohama Beach is at the end of the paved road where the hiking trail to the Nature reserve at Ka'ena Point begins. For security, park your car near the lifeguard tower. There is a parking lot where the road ends and becomes a trail. As in any remote area, there's always the chance for car break-ins. Nice place to visit but west side of Oahu is known to be a rough area of drug users and crime so please be careful. Please enjoy the beach, but also remember LEAVE NO FOOTPRINT... Carry out ALL of your trash. There are trash cans available--use them! NEED TO KNOW..... *Most tourists never see this side of Oahu.  When people claim to have driven around the island, the Westside is typically cut out since the road dead ends at Yokohama Bay, and the most sensible route is to head up and around the North Shore. *There is no shade to be found at Yokohama Beach. Pack an umbrella, water, hats, and lots of sunscreen.  It tends to get very hot on the Westside of the island.  I would even recommend starting early or late afternoon at this Oahu beach. *It's pretty safe out here, but you should never leave your personal belongings unattended on the beach or left behind in the car. *High surf advisory - the Westside is an extension of the North Shore, and so are the notorious big waves.  Even the smaller shore break waves are rough and sometimes create a strong under toe.  Check in with the lifeguard for advise before entering the water. *Ka'ena Pt  - the road may end at Yokohama Beach, but the Oahu hiking trails start from here.  Take a two-mile journey hiking out to the westerly tip of the island, and explore beautiful Ka'ena Pt Park, trekking the sand dunes, and along the jagged reef coastline. read more

If you haven't visited this beautiful beach in while or not at all - add this to your list of places to go! Most people find the west side beaches and attractions too far and just a bit "sketchy" for their liking. There used to be a time when this beach was considered extremely unsafe because of the high incidence of theft and vandalism (I think partly because there were so few people going there and the high amount of homelessness in the area). Like any area, I still take all the precautions of locking up my valuables and not leaving items in the car in plain view. Commons sense dictates that if you don't want things stolen, you stash and lock it up (I like to pre-plan and place everything that I'm NOT going to take onto the beach in the trunk BEFORE i get to the place I'm going. This way, the person on the lookout for visitors/tourists stashing valuables doesn't "see" that I have anything valuable in the car). Also, as I woman I do not recommend going to this beach alone - especially if there is hardly anyone there. On the day of our visit, the beach was teeming with families and young adults all sporadically placed on the beach. It wasn't "crowded" at all (by Waikiki definitions) but this is the most I've ever seen here. It was a good feeling! Today, the beach and park is free of homeless encampments and clutter and once again restored to the beauty it once was. Ka'ena Point / Yokohama Bay is no exception! There's a long stretch of beautiful, pristine white sand beach and at the very end of the road begins the entrance to Ka'ena State Park. The beach itself is breathtakingly REFRESHING!! There's nothing but SKY above and the VAST MOUNTAIN RANGE behind the beach. It's the perfect combination! Beware though, if you should enter the water - use extreme caution as the water could be quite tricky in some spots. The undertow is strong and the waves deceivingly powerful. There is an area to the right of the main sandy beach where you can enjoy the tide pools without fear of getting a workout in the ocean. This beach is unshaded and it can get hot rather QUICKLY. So beware - you will leave sunburned if you don't take sunscreen with you. I made the mistake once of not putting on sunscreen and played all day in the water. The trades were up and the sun was out - it didn't feel hot at all. But lo and behold, by the end of the day - solarcaine was my new best friend! There is a bathroom on premise as well as a lifeguard (the lifeguard is new to me - I guess I haven't been back to this beach in a long time myself)(well needed in my humble opinion). I do not know the conditions of the bathroom as I try to avoid public bathrooms all together - especially if it's at the beach (yes...I hold it and if I really, really HAVE to go - well it may be TMI for this review). What I love most about this place is the sunset!! OMGoodness....most beautiful sunset ever (ok, well it doesn't compare to Oia, Greece but this IS Hawaii)! There's a very peaceful and magical feeling witnessing something so magnificent. Words cannot describe the feeling and all the pictures I've taken through the years of these sunsets do not do the place justice. When I think of Hawaii...my mind takes to places such as this. Untouched by the masses; majestic...and simply put, nature at it's best. read more

***During COVID-19 Visit*** I wonder if the road is open now because it was blocked off a few months back. It's right by the Kaena Point Satellite Tracking Station. Anyway, this beach is pretty secluded. Although a nice beach, the waves are very strong. I wouldn't recommend swimming here. People have drowned so please be really careful if you do decide to go in the water. The drive took me about an a hour and a half to get here, but it was worth it for the scenery. Great beaches along this bay for watching the sunset. Down the furthest end where the sand stops there are rocks and tide pools. It used to be my favorite spot to come with a special someone in the middle of the night, just to sit on the rocks and watch the ocean. Best on a moonlit night. Be careful if doing that though, the water tends to be rough and slams up against the rocks pretty high. Always light your way when walking on the rocks. If you're going swimming, be careful also. Most times of the year the water here can be pretty choppy and rough. Other than that, not much to say about Yokohama, otherwise known as "yokes." It's a great place to come to get away from everything else and feel as far away as possible from the city. It's also an amazing place to look at the stars at night on a cloudless night. There are just so many and because there are no lights around, no streetlamps, etc, the view of the sky is pretty much as clear as you can get. Lastly, be sure that if you're driving at night, to be careful. You DON'T need your high-beams, you can see just fine with your headlights but if you use them, be aware of other people on the road please. read more

Also known as "yokes". I love this beach! It's super clear!. One time I was heading there and I saw dolphins flipping and what have you in the water about a couple hundred feet away! It was beautiful. The mountains are super green, the sand isn't rocky, and it's just an absolutely perfect place to hang out and have a beach day at. There's calm areas and areas with waves to catch. I usually park in the parking area across the street with the restrooms and shower area. It's after the first dip. The shower has only one shower head and is being held up by a caution tape. A worker there gave us a hose connected to an outdoor faucet which was like a second shower head LOL. (thanks ah braddah) In regards to the shower area, this is definitely a great beach to go to. It's kind of a far drive through nanakuli and waianae, but you will not be disappointing. A lot of people come here to camp or bonfire too, but just don't get caught! SIDE NOTE** I learned from an uncle that I met there, "If you gon bonfire, use regular wood, not palettes. Palettes get dakine nails in um. The wood gon burn but not the nails. Kid run around on the beach and if it were your kid, you wouldn't want them to step on a hot nail brah." So go to Yokes and have a great taste of paradise, but remember to please malama da aina! My favorite place in the whole entire world. I grew up going to this beach. Back then, it was a lot more secluded...where we might see only a couple other groups on the beach. When we went recently, it was slightly more crowded, but not so much that you throw a rock at the next group. This beach is a drive, but that's what makes it so wonderful and more secluded. You can easily find space and enjoy. Because it is a long stretch, there is also a good mix of waves, calm beach, and tidepools. They do have a life guard on duty during the day and you can now get reception down there, which is nice in case of an emergency. read more

This is one of the best beaches on the island by far. You can park on the side of the road and it's always sunny. The surroundings are something out of a postcard. The mountains are so green, they almost look fake. This beach is great for photos. The sunsets are beautiful and if your lucky you might be able to see a green flash. The waves can get pretty big at this beach so be careful. They have lifeguards on duty, but this beach gets pretty busy. It's great for bbq's, swimming, and photo shoots. I always see people taking photos at this beach. I highly recommend venturing out to this amazing beach. You won't be disappointed. read more

The catamaran kept calling us. We had a mystic sunset cruise the night before on the west shore of Oahu and sailed all the way up to Ka'ena Point, the tip of the island. From the boat, we could see that there was nothing but some satellite pods out there, and decided to drive back the next day and experience the place. Following my faithful Google Maps, we drove from Ko'Olina up Highway 93, past Waianae. The road is an old four lane cement highway with center dividers, so be prepared for stop and go traffic and kind of funky neighborhoods. It can get very trafficky around 4pm. We kept going and going, and civilization petered out, but seaside parks came into view. Heeding scenery, we did notice lots of homeless encampments by the sides of the road as we got further north. We finally reached a scenic stretch of highway that was almost deserted, save for park bathrooms and a footwash fountain by the side of the road. The beach was awesomely awesome (had to write it twice). We found a parking spot and parked so we could still see our car, which also gave us a great vista of the ocean. The bay is breathtaking! We clambered down to the water, dragging our hats, sunscreen, noodles, and novels and plumped our towels near the sea. There is a rim of flat rocks along the sea edge jutting out into the sea. Sometimes the rocks form fascinating tide pools, and sometimes small wading areas, washed by the surf. In the less rocky areas, you can actually see the power of the undertow, and you want to buddy swim, or have someone watching you. I sat in the surf, and let the waves rush back and forth, tickling me, but I could feel their power. It is bright out there, since no trees are around, but it is undeveloped nature at its finest! The long drive is worth it to have aunspoiled wild adventure in unspoiled paradise. read more

Yokohoma Bay is for serious surfers only. This is one of the few places on the island that can catch a variety of North and South swells. If you are fortunate enough to make the drop, be careful enough not to ride the wave too far in, unless you enjoy eating coral reef for breakfast. Weekends are usually pretty packed, as this is a popular camp site for families on the Leeward side. If there is a decent sized swell that rolls through between Monday and Thursday, you will find a lineup that is pretty reasonable in size. Show respect to the locals, be selective in the waves that you challenge, and don't pull back once you commit to a wave. This is the recipe for success at this high-risk/high-reward surf spot. read more

Aside from Lanikai, this is probably my second favorite beach. My cousins are locals and brought my husband and I to this beach to watch the sunset (which is breathtaking, btw). It's located at the far end of the island and not too many tourists know about it, which is nice. The water is clear and a beautiful, turquoise color. You also have the lush, green mountains in the background. It definitely makes for scenic photos! I was told that dolphins frequent this bay and even saw some in the distance! The only downside is that there is absolutely no shade, so be sure to bring an umbrella or tent so you don't burn! Also, the waves are strong here so be careful when swimming. This beach is be-a-utiful. Located all the way on the Westside of the island by Kaena Point, it's a far drive from town but definitely worth the view. The beach is huge and although it can get crowded, there's still plenty of space on the sand to lie out. This place isn't hard to find at all, you literally keep driving until you're at the end of the road. Parking doesn't seem to be a problem, my friends and I went on a Saturday afternoon and we were still able to find parking pretty quickly. The waves can pick up randomly and really quickly so that's one thing to watch out for. Especially if you're going with little kids, you need to really make sure you keep a good eye on them. I've seen dogs at the beach too so I'm assuming it's pet friendly. The sunset is beautiful on that side of the island too so if you're looking to escape the hustle and bustle in the city, it'll definitely be worth the drive. read more

Lots of parking available along the road with access to Kaena Point at the end of the drive. Very busy during the weekend so weekdays is a must if u want seclusion. Restrooms is available but dated so don't expect much but it will work especially at a beach park. Great area to fish aswell and if you come at night be prepared to enjoy amazing views of the stars... Sunsets are breath taking a must see.. read more
