Enjoyed a nice dinner. While the selection of specialty is limited and a lot with imitation crab (which I'm not a fan of) the one we picked was unique and good. I especially liked the spicy tuna on rice cake. The salmon skin handroll was great as well. The staff were friendly and attentive. Free parking in the back!

Makoto Sushi is hands down one of the best hole-in-the-wall sushi spots in Encino. The staff is always friendly and welcoming, and the quality is consistently excellent. Honestly, every roll on the menu is good, but our favorite is the 420 roll -- so good we order it every time. One thing we really appreciate is that they're happy to customize rolls, which makes it easy to get exactly what you're craving. My husband is a big sashimi fan and loves the king crab, green mussels, bluefin, and tuna belly -- all super fresh and consistently delicious. You can really taste the quality of the fish. Bonus points for being baby/kid friendly, which makes this an easy and stress-free spot for families too. No frills, no hype -- just great sushi done right. If you're in the area and want reliable, high-quality sushi, Makoto Sushi is a must.

Don't get turned off by the decor... Makoto decor is stuck in the 90's sushi diner atmosphere. Now that I go that off my chest... the sushi exceeded our expectations. We ordered the albacore/ crispy onions, yellow tail hand rolls and two other rolls. The sushi was so fresh, the service was fast and friendly and a last minute Saturday night sushi craving this place was perfect.

Teriyaki Steak Dinner Combo. Veggie tempura was really crunchy and delicious. The miso soup was outstanding. The steak was tender!

I was in the hood and this cute unassuming sushi house stood out! I think they just repainted the outside to this bright Lucious red! Once inside we were warmly greeted by the sushi chefs and serving staff. We chose a high quality cool saki, Junmai Ginjo. It was light and refreshing. Great find! I wanted a teriyaki Steak combo and really loved it. Stand outs were the miso soup and the super crunchy veggie tempura. My GF loved her yellowtail carpaccio and her special tuna roll. All together it was a fun date night!

The servers are kind and seem to help each other which is nice! The restaurant is decorated cute. The food was not great in my opinion. The spicy garlic edamame was the best thing on the table and it was slightly undercooked. The crispy rice spicy tuna had extremely hard rice that was white in color and the spicy tuna was not spicy. :( the white ninja roll was drowned in sauce making it unable to taste the fish or any ingredient of the roll. And the avocado roll's nori was not chewable (I did send this back and they took it off the check).

A favorite sushi spot of mine in the valley. Attentive service, excellent food. Low key vibes. Loved everything I ordered. Highly recommend.

I've never had a bad experience at this place. I try to make it a point to come here at least twice a year. I feel like I'm in Japan because it's our own little spot that never doesn't have a space for us.

Nice presentation on the rolls! This restaurant is cute and cozy, it's a skinny narrow restaurant with tables and seats at the bar. They get pretty busy which is a good sign- they've got fans! The food is delicious. The restaurant is clean. The bathroom is clean. Parking is limited but there's street parking. Sometimes that prevents me from returning to a business as often, but not for thus place. I recommend it!

Some of the best sushi in town. The tuna Tataki is delicious. The Shishido mushrooms are also delicious. Some of the best albacore I've had.

Ask the Community - Makoto Sushi

Does anyone know if they do all u can eat?

Not that I'm aware of...I've been going for years...one of my favorites!

Is Mako still the owner here, I had my 1st taste of sushi with him at another restaurant 30 years ago?

Makoto retired a few years back. One of his sushi chefs (Rin) bought it from him. Though this is an old post and you may know that by now!

We've been a few times now, and somehow it just keeps getting better and better every visit. I honestly don't know how they do it, but everything about this place is amazing. The service is amazing to you always feel looked after the whole time you're there. The place itself is super cute and has such a nice vibe. It's the perfect little spot for a date night or even just to chill, have a drink, and enjoy some seriously good ramen. Easily one of my favorite spots and 100% worth it every time.

Despite even that, I was helped immediately and was heading out with my order for 2 bowls in about 15 minutes. I was also offered a glass of ice water while I waited, which was very kind. Every aspect from the dark walls and wooden bar, down to the music and bathroom is well thought out. You can tell they truly value their space and the customers that support the restaurant. Don't get me started on the food ~ We tried the Bincho Egg Black Tonkatsu Ramen. The broth was silky and creamy, not oily or heavy at all. The black garlic added a very interesting earthy and almost scorched taste to it. The egg was sweet, and I've never had a sweet ramen egg before but it went well with the rest of the umami flavors in the dish. The green onions and wood ear mushrooms had a fresh crunch to them and there was enough to get a good amount in every bite. The charsiu was tender + savory sweet, kinda tasted like cheese to me but that's also a positive lol! The noodles were slightly chewy and the portion was just right for the amount of broth you get. I have nothing bad to say about this ramen, it's truly one of those spots where your heart desires seconds or even thirds lowkey. I'll be back again to try a different option on the menu. That spicy karaage looked pretty fire so I may need to come back to try that too... Thank you Bincho! Y'all killed the ramen game.

He knows I love hot pot and instead of our usual 626 hot pot spots, he wanted to choose something new and hip that we've never tried before. He heard from a friend that Tabu Shabu was a good hot pot place so we decided to try it out. The restaurant is located in the corner in a huge plaza, we came on a Friday night and although the plaza was busy, we were able to find a parking spot. Inside the restaurant, you'll either be seated the few tables that they or in the center circular "bar" style seating. It was my first time being at a hot pot place with this style seating, but it was a unique experience. Once seated, we were given menus and quickly asked what we wanted to drink. After the waitress took our order, it took us about 15 minutes for our appetizer to arrive. We ordered spicy edamame and a cucumber salad. The menu was very basic and I wasn't impressed with the broth selection. The standard broth was traditional kombu (literally water with a huge piece of seaweed), miso for additional $1, sukiyaki, for additional $3, and tonkotsu for additional $4. Sounds a bit absurd to me that they would charge extra for the different options when at much better tasting Hot Pot places, the options would all be included in the price. After 20 minutes, one of the waiters noticed that we didn't receive our broth or food and asked us if we ordered yet. We told him that a waitress took our order already but we haven't received our food. Turns out, the waitress took our order but didn't place it in the system yet. I'm hangry at this point, we came to our reservation at 7:30, it's 8:20 at this point and we had plans at 9pm-- so I was a bit annoyed that we had to wait so long. Things were turned around once we received our order though, the broth and food came quickly after she placed our order and the veggie platter section was OK. I'm not the biggest fan of hot pot places that have preselected veggie plates. The veggie plate had a small handful of spinach, a few pieces of napa cabbage, 3 pieces of broccoli, two slices of kabocha pumpkin, a small bunch of enoki mushroom, two pieces of tofu, and some onion slices. It's a nice "variety" but I only like broccoli and mushroom, but because I don't eat rice I had no choice but to eat the veggies to fill me up. I'm happy they offered Shirataki noodles! I chose the large portion and did half chicken half chuck roll. The chuck roll I was given was chewy and fatty. I spat out the chewy parts which was basically majority of the portion I was given. Would I come back here? No, but being from the 626, I have higher expectations for hot pot because I've grown up eating it. This is a good hot pot place for beginner hot pot goers.

As soon as we walked in, we were warmly welcomed by Jazz, and right away we noticed how clean, beautiful, and well-designed the place is. But what really stood out was the food and the service. Every single dish we ordered -- from the appetizers to the main dishes and dessert -- was absolutely delicious. One of my favorites was the edamame. The sauce was so good that I actually took the leftover sauce home! What also makes them different from many other Japanese restaurants we've been to is the attention to detail in their customer service. Since there were six of us, they automatically gave everyone both chopsticks and forks without us even asking. I especially appreciated that because my mom usually has to request a fork at restaurants. The staff kept checking on us, refilling drinks proactively, and making sure we were comfortable throughout the meal. Even when we ordered mochi for dessert, they already cut it into shareable pieces and brought a fresh set of plastic forks for everyone. It's the little things that really make a difference -- excellent food, beautiful and clean atmosphere, amazing service, convenience, and thoughtful attention to customers. Definitely a 5-star experience for me and my family. Highly recommended!

It's important for me to mention that this review reflects my personal taste. We ordered a wide variety of dishes to try as much as possible and I tasted almost everything Unfortunately I didn't connect with the flavors Most of the sashimi dishes had a strong fishy taste as if the fish wasn't handled precisely enough before serving and in some cases the cuts were too thick for sashimi. The only dish I truly enjoyed was a vegetarian roll, which felt balanced and tasty to me, probably because it didn't include fish. The fruit creme brulee dessert also didn't work for me, it didn't look very appealing, and the flavors didn't come together in a way I liked. The staff was very nice, and the place itself is small and cute, with a pleasant atmosphere overall. Overall, it's possible that others will enjoy it more, especially those who like stronger, more dominant flavors, but for me, the experience was average, which is why my rating is three stars.
