Of course I've reviewed this stunning restaurant before, but having such a sensational dinner here last night, I just needed to "Shout-Out" again, how wonderful our home away from home can be! Having Master Chef Taku as captain of this magnificent restaurant is what makes Sushi Spot - magnificent! He buys only the freshest catch the sea offers. He cuts his catch like a neurosurgeon. His inventionous and skill behind the sushi bar is a joy to watch. Their $65.00 Omakase dinner is the best deal on earth. In Chicago (where we live now) this $65.00 undertaking at Sushi Spot would be starting at $150.00 without blinking an eye. In the four years since we left Los Angeles, we come to L.A.and visit at least twice a year; and we've NEVER not come to Sushi Spot on any of these stays - Ever! Self-parking in the shopping plaza is limited but usually OK for dinner time as many of the other shops in the plaza close early (Sushi Spot is currently only open for dinner, Tuesday thru Saturday), only major culprit being the 7-11 there. Street parking is very limited. Venue: 4: Nice and comfortable. Good size sushi bar area as well as tables. No outdoor seating. Food: 5: Great, high quality, exotic and unique fish selections, creative and tasty preparations. Excellent, top notch high quality nigiri and sashimi. Tasty and unique appetizers, Limited menu of hand-rolls, specialty rolls and cooked plates. You can sit at the bar and enjoy a high quality Omakase experience by Master Chef Taku-san himself or choose a table and order on your own. Either way you can't go wrong. If you are at the sushi bar but not by Taku-san, Chef Mika-san is also excellent. Prices are a little expensive but more or less on par with other higher quality Japanese restaurants. Drinks: 5: Beer (on tap and in bottles), wine, sake, shochu. No spirits. You can purchase a large bottle of shochu (a better value than the smaller bottle) and they will put your name on it and hold it for your next visit :) Service: 5: Servers and sushi chefs are polite and attentive and eager to make recommendations. The Last Word 5: Sushi Spot fulfills a nice niche in the crowded landscape of sushi restaurants in the San Fernando Valley. Unlike most other Japanese restaurants here, their approach is a little more towards the traditional and purist side. The ingredients and the overall quality are consistently very high. If you are in the mood for good quality and unique nigiri and sashimi, this is the place. If you're looking for huge sauce-drenched, over the top rolls with cute and funny names, this is not the place but trust me; there are several other restaurants along the same stretch that would fulfill your cravings! Have driven past this place for years and always wanted to try it. I finally went recently after multiple friends told me it's one of the best sushi spots in the Valley (no pun intended), and it did not disappoint. Went there one time with friend along time ago so we decided to give it another try. When arrived we asked for a seats at the bar where the owner immediately said this is for OMASASI SERVICE and I will serve what I want. We decided what we want. We were then shown to a table in the corner. The server came over and presented the menu and took our drink order. After reviewing we ordered several offerings which were promptly returned to us and we immediately started to eat was immediately disappointed with the lack of flavor we are used to. The albacore was not delicate and the yellow tail was soft with no body. We ordered salmon sashimi was ok with exception if the size of each piece and presentation. I can go on and on but I won't . We ordered fresh water eel which we like to be prepared well done and crispy. Server brought back to us and said we ordered it well done and crispy and he said the owner will not make it so we refused it. End of story! Very disappointing experience. The server was great and apologized. We have eaten sushi for years and understand and expect good product to be served and yes there must be a customer for this but this not for us. I can't believe it took us so long to try Sushi Spot. Very fresh fish and surprisingly reasonable prices. The albacore sushi was some of the best we've ever had (and melted in our mouths), and the blue crab roll was also excellent. The staff was also super attentive and really personable. We walked in at 7pm without a reservation on Saturday and they offered us a table for 45 mins before their next reservation. So glad we got to crush that sushi craving. From there, you get a little taste of freshness from the sea, with the last course being marinated ikura sushi and Uni sushi, which is a great way to end the meal. This last weekend, Yellowtail Belly was one of the specials and lord have mercy-- it was SO goodddd. I swear the Salmon nigiri we got tasted like Salmon Belly. 10's across the board. I will say, I tried the "fried soft shell crab" with ponzu for first time. You can SKIP this dish. Nothing to rave about-- maybe if the ponzu was on the side instead of on the actual crab-- it'd be better, but it was super salty since it was on top of it. Ordered the following and it made me realize just how much I miss sushi. Anacado Roll Special Roll Tuna Roll Spider Roll One of them is "keto" if you're on a special diet. Two of these rolls have sauces that go with them. The lady thoughtfully labelled the sauces and wrote on the tray which sauce should go on which roll. They are doing take out Tuesday-Saturday 4:00-8:30 and with Chef Taku-san, the fish is as fresh and delicious as ever! You can also order some sake or beer with your order, as well! The fish was pretty fresh. There were as many cooked food was raw ones. The order of dishes didn't make sense though. After a week long camping trip in the great outdoors, I was beyond excited to have sushi as my 1st meal back!! We were on the way to LA, but decided to try Sushi Spot in Ventura because of its raving reviews. I must say... This restaurant definitely lives up to its hype! Sushi Spot is a cute little mom & pop's shop that's been in business for decades. They serve fresh ingredients and great quality fish. Each dish is prepared almost to perfection! The service is outstanding and the place is well kept. It was mid-November and the weather was a bit chilly. They set up outdoor dining to follow Covid-19 safety restrictions and provided heaters for each table. There were also large umbrellas to shield guests from the wind. The staff all wore masks and gloves. I got the Omakase Course. 14 different types of Nigiri Sushi: 4 Way Tuna - Toro - Chu-Toro - Tuna - Negi-Toro YellowTail Belly Kampachi Red Snapper Scallop Bonito Albacore Uni Ikura Sardine Ocean Trout In addition, we had 1/2 dozen Pacific Oysters for an appetizer, an order of Amaebi (2 pieces) and a Spicy Tuna on Fried Rice Cake. Everything was beyond delicious. It was absolutely "melt in your mouth" sushi. It felt like a dining experience, in Japan. Best sushi in the San Fernando Valley? Many argue that Sushi Spot is. At its price point, I'd say it's definitely hard to beat. Sushi Spot managed to exceed my optimistically high expectations, based off a friend of mine who has been raving about this place for years. I'm unfortunately not in this area often anymore, except Sundays in which they are closed, so opportunities have been limited for me to stop in. I'm glad I finally got to try it. Came here Friday, August 3rd, around 8:30pm after work. My friend had reserved some seats at the bar, and we were all pretty ready to splurge. We decided to go with the omakase, and keep going until we couldn't anymore. Price is based on how many/which pieces you eat, which could actually turn into a pretty endless (and expensive) experience. We tried to watch our budget towards the end, but it did get a little out of control (in a good way). Omakase started out strong, with a plate of nigiri containing toro, bluefin tuna, albacore belly, and negitoro. My favorite of the set was the toro, though all were great. Next up was a plate of nigiri containing red snapper, black snapper, and halibut. Red snapper was my favorite of the three. Then came kampachi, shima aji, and yellowtail belly. Yellowtail belly won the third round for me. After that came halibut fin, scallop, snow crab, and wagyu beef. At the end, we ordered a few more additional pieces of sardine, blue shrimp, ocean trout, and bonito. This was definitely a splurge, but I wanted to get a good taste of everything they had to offer. The whole dining experience was very enjoyable, and I really liked the warm rice they use here. Particularly, towards the end when pieces were coming one at a time and had less time to cool off and lose its texture. All of the nigiri was well-made and well-balanced. The selection is not anything crazy, but they have all of the essentials plus some extra. Blue Shrimp was a first for me. If you like sushi, this place is definitely worth visiting. It may not look like much on the outside, but this place is serving high quality food and service on the inside! I've been here a couple times and they've been consistent with their service and quality of sushi. I highly recommend trying their set course if you're new to sushi or just want a sampler of the different types of sushi available. So many delicious and fresh pieces of fish are served on the set course and plated beautifully. My absolute favorite items on the set course are the red snapper, baked scallop, and salmon! My friends and I enjoyed our set courses with a bottle of Kikusui, which is nice to sip on while enjoying our sushi. Shoutout to our server Mark for always checking on us, informing us on what items he was bringing to our table, and for letting us know when we needed to use soy sauce on our sushi! We came here for dinner last night on accident. We had tried another sushi place a few week prior and couldn't remember the name. It was in the same area and looked like the same strip mall. Once we got the menu, I realized this isn't the same place but since we were already seated so we decided to stay. Let me just tell you how happy I am that we did!!! Hands down best sushi I've ever had. My boyfriend ordered this sampler thing they had that was $45 for most of the items they have there and they bring it out in courses. He said "omg this is so good" to everything. From snapper to clams. I ordered a bunch of different items and felt the exact same. They have a garlic tempura appetizer that was soo good. It's deep fried small pieces of garlic. It was a nice change of place from the edemame I always get for my appetizer at other places. We sat on a cute patio that had umbrellas and patio heaters. The service I'd give 20 stars to if I could. The waiters were the best I've had in months. All of them. Our main server was tall, had dark curly hair and he was so awesome. Sometimes the other waiters would also help you out and bring out your food and they were incredible too. You can tell they all work together to make sure they give you impeccable service. Chef Taku will let you know if you need to dip your nigiri in shoyu or not. The service was excellent and the chef was very friendly. The restaurant itself is very small. I recommend sitting at the bar, but there is a 4 order minimum per person at the bar. I usually order from the special or recommendation only. For me salmon, albacore, yellowtail and you basic tuna you can always get. This is was what we ordered, and I recommend ordering. Skip Jack Tai Scallop with real wasabi root. Amazing!!! Kohada it's up there with one of the best I had tried. Engawa(Halibut Fin ). So good and fatty!!!! Bonito Spanish Mackerel. Delicious! Uni. So fresh and sweet. The portions was huge! In a totally badly designed generic strip mall, Sushi Spot may not look like much. From the outside, it looks like another hootchie strip mall Sushi joint that serves mediocre California rolls, kitschy rainbow & caterpillar rolls that would appeal mostly to the amateur Sushi enthusiast. Even the inside is slightly awry, & the interior design would not win an award from Architectural Digest. Although the amiable Sushi Chef will honor requests from his customers for the above mediocre items where there is no nuance & flavours that conflict, he is extremely competent & adept at creating his own versions of Edomaè (eh doh mah eh) Sushi & Sashimi based more on classic Japanese clean, subtle yet flavourfully fresh flavours. I asked the Chef for his version of Omakasè (oh mah kah seh) or table d'hôte where the Chef makes the decision as to what he wants to serve that is the best in terms of ingredients or culinary style. My only request was that he not serve any Saba, which is a very healthful fish to eat, but I'm not enamored to its often heavy oiliness. 1) Trio of Tunas: 3 variations of tuna Nigiri (nee ghee ree) Sushi that consisted of a slice of slightly aged, fatty, melt-in-your-mouth O-toro; Big Eye Tuna from Hawai'i that was firm yet velvety, sea meaty; chopped O-Toro topped with chopped green onions that added an herbal, funkiness to the aged, naturally oil rich fatty tuna. It was a meaty rich way to enter into an Omakase. 2) To clear the palate, Sushi rice was circumscribed w/ a wide band of black Nori seaweed topped w/ baked Engawa which is the ribbon of white meat found around the fins of halibut & chopped green onions w/ a dab of Momiji Oroshi, grated Japanese Giant White Radish infused w/ red chile paste. The texture is soft yet subtly meaty. 3 The Stuffed Calamaro caught my eye. It was just the body of a small squid stuffed w/ crab flavoured Surimi. I requested a bit of mayonnaise w/ a touch of sriracha for my dipping sauce, but the Chef kindly also added a sweet soy reduction since that was the usual style. Nice way to add more flavour variation to a single dish. 4) Uni Sushi/Ikura Sushi: Nice pairing of two very sea worthy ingredients. The Uni was light colored yet had nicely nuanced minerality of the sea w/ custard-like texture. The Ikura or salmon roe was infused w/ Sho-yu (soy sauce) that was seasoned with Sake (sah keh) & Mirin, a sweetened sake). The excellent quality Nori seaweed 'paper' also added a nice Umami that emphasized the gifts from the sea. 5) I requested the Hotate (hoh tah teh) from Hokkaido-, the northern most big island in a hand roll garnished w/ only cucumber & Shiso (shee soh) leaf. No mayonnaise to cover up the refined sweet, oceanic minerality with moist, velvety texture with again the exemplary Nori that ups the game. This was an exercise in purity w/ the simple ingredients shining out to prove that quality exists in the House of Sushi Spot. 5a) All the above was paired with Abarashiri by Yaegaki (yah eh gah kee) which came out almost totally frozen in the 300ml bottle. It was a unique way to keep the Sake chilled....form followed function. Abarashiri was high in alcohol (18%-19%) so it was similar to a Tokubetsu Junmai Sakè which is fortified by added alcohol beyond the brewing process. This brings about a Sakè that is extremely dry which is ideal for Sushi/Sashimi since a clean palate cleansing characteristic is essential. The flavour is slightly citrusy with a heavier Ko-ji lees fermented after taste that only lasts a moment. 6) Tamago: Conclusion of the main meal ended on a sweet note w/ a very moist, cushy egg "omelette" stuffed w/ a puree of Neri Ume or salted pickled plum & green Shiso or Japanese "basil" leaf. The Mirin infused sweetness had a slightly Sakè inflected dulcet tone which was contrasted by the salty fruitiness of the Ume paste & refreshed herbally by the fresh, green Shiso. It was an elegant way to end the meal w/ a flavour that the Italians would call agrodolce. For Sushi Novices at Sushi Spot bar: Keep an eye on the Chef to see if he has already applied some kind of sauce to the Sushi. If he has, do NOT dip the Sushi into any more soy sauce since it will kill the flavours that the Sushi Chef is trying to convey. Also the Sushi rice is kneaded into shape very lightly so that if you dip the Sushi in soy sauce, the rice will crumble into your little dish of soy sauce......which is not too cool in that it shows ignorance of Sushi eating etiquette. Best way to eat Sushi to emphasize the flavour of the fish is to eat it with minimal use of the dreaded soy sauce. Nice duo of Sushi Chefs, one of whom is of the female persuasion which is still unusual in the male dominated world of Sushi. Since women make up more than 1/2 of the world population, it would be appropriate to see more in the years to come. Perhaps a more feminine culinary perspective may presage new directions in the glorious art of Sushi. read more

Came here last week after reading all the positive reviews and am always interested in finding the next best sushi spot. Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed with this location as much as I wanted to love it. Granted it was a Friday night and likely a night that gets busy however when I attended during prime time, it was only around 30% filled yet there were plenty of staff which is a great thing. The issue is that two of the servers were not very responsive. We found the need to remind our server twice for most items as he was forgetting, absent-minded, or just preoccupied. Whatever the reason, it was slightly annoying to keep track of what we had ordered vs. what was delivered if at all. As far as the sushi, the quality and taste were both fair at best. The prices did not represent the quality of the fish (IOW, it's overpriced for what you're getting). I selected from the menu and went with a few items confirmed as the more popular dishes. This included a crispy rice with spicy tuna - it was fair at best. The peppers stuffed with albacore were kind of disgusting - tasted like chicken tenders. The sushi pieces themselves tasted very fishy and that included items off the specials menu which were all premium priced. I was really not impressed overall. The menu is not very robust. In Woodland Hills/Tarzana alone there are far better tasting/quality sushi joints. This is located in a really dingy valley strip mall with 7-11 as its anchor tenant. Parking is tricky and tight.
