This place though small is very mighty! Upon entering, we were treated by the chef and staff. Once our party was here we got started off with drinks and our server Mooki had some great recommendations for good Japanese beers for our whole table, including non alcoholic. We then started off with our starters which included the garlic edamame and sushi tacos. To say FIRE is an understatement as the flavor profile for both are elevated beyond what you would expect. We subsequently went into our sushi and each piece is curated to highlight the fish in such a fashion that I am not reaching for any soy sauce or feeling like it is forgetful. Each piece of sushi is very memorable and the way our food was served created an à la carte style omakase that guided us through which fish to eat first and how to progress. Chef Alex has done a wonderful job creating a memorable experience that is true to its core but unique. Finishing our meal with the mochi that has great texture. The fish was SO fresh and buttery...also just so visually beautiful. Really I can't say enough about the sushi here - just on another level. We come here with our toddler all the time and he's treated like a little VIP, it's the absolute best. The entire staff is amazing and wonderfully accommodating, the food is amazing, and it's in such a great spot with good parking on the side streets. We're very happy we've been able to snag a table whenever we come in right around opening for the dinner service at 5pm. Our favorite dishes so far: the sushi tacos are awesome, the holy crab is so so good, our toddler loves the salmon sashimi, the mochi ice cream we got last time and it's a huge serving and we all shared! Their miso soup is also very umami and well-balanced, and their shrimp shumai is crispy and comes with a great side sauce. You really can't go wrong with anything here, we're big fans! All the rolls are delicious. We've been ordering by-the-piece nigiri recently and have been enjoying eating our way through the list. Get the hokkaido scallop!!! It's absolutely unreal!! I wanted to try Umiko for a little while! The place is modern, clean and has a capacity of about 40 seats. Staff were very nice, polite and greeting us in & out. We tried the crispy tuna rice, albacore and California cut rolls, a salmon hand roll and a green tea tempura ice cream, the fish was fresh and it was tasty. There are few parking spots in front but they can be a bit tricky since one backs up perpendicularly onto Ventura. Other options are easily available though. read more

Bomb. Amazing. Fire. Saw this place while shopping at Ross across the street. We ordered a lot of sushi rolls and it was all so delicious. The presentation was amazing. The food took a while to come out so we were eating roll after roll instead of all at once. This is by far the best sushi in the valley I've had. Umiko Sushi Ray opened up at the end of November 2025 taking over the space of The Little Cafe and it's such a great addition to the sushi scene. I dined in yesterday for my first time with a friend and we enjoyed the time very much! The experience was so great - welcoming, personable, the establishment is minimal and modern with a great clean beautiful look and feel, good atmosphere, music, and the food and drinks were top notch! Chef Alex (over 30 years of experience and has worked at some top notch places) and the team, Mookie, and everyone else are all so wonderful. The food menu is really great with a wide range of options. They have a nice lunch special (12pm-2:30pm), various sets (combination, hand rolls), a couple omakase options, specialty sashimis, many small plates, a few salads (seaweed, garden, cucumber), nigiri (1 pc per order), sashimi (5pcs per order), various rolls (classic rolls, cloud rolls, specialty rolls), soups (udon, ramen), a ribe eye teriyaki, and two collar items (salmon and yellowtail). They have a nice dessert menu with some ice creams dishes as well. Drink options to enjoy include a variety of both alcoholic( sojus, sakes, wine and beer) and nonalcoholic beverages (waters, soft drinks - ramune included, iced teas, hot green tea, lemonade, apple juice, and hot/cold coffee). I was really impressed by the food in its quality, taste and presentation. Some items are from Japan too! Enjoyed the following as a first timer: Hot green tea House hot sake Sapporo Japanese seaweed salad Holy! crab (small plate item featuring baked snow crab) Crispy soft-shell crab (small plate item of lightly battered soft shell crab) Albacore and crispy onion harmony (specialty signature sashimi) Nigiri - red snapper, Hokkaido scallop, yellowtail hamachi Green tea ice cream Everything was stellar but there was one item we ordered twice which was the Holy! crab and after you have a bite you'll most likely say that as well. Nigiri was presented very well with appropriate instructions (no soy needed for instance for some), the albacore and crispy onion harmony was melt in your mouth good, and the crispy soft shell crab portion was grand! Seating options include a few tables in the front, nice sushi bar seating, and various tables (no booths). Prices are on par to the times and comparable establishments. Parking options include a few spots they have and street. The few spots in the front are a little tricky to get into and out and I don't recommend that option, so I recommend parking on Ventura , the side streets, or maybe any lots around from the businesses around. 3.5 stars I would love to give place higher stars but as of now I can't. My wife and I stopped by for lunch the other day of give this band new sushi place a try. Umiko Sushi Ray took over The Little Cafe space. The restaurant itself is nice and modern. Umiko Sushi Ray has a good lunch Set menu that is very reasonable in price. In fact everything in the menu was very reasonable in price including the 10pc omakase that I ordered and my wife got their lunch set. 10pc Omakase: Everything fish that was served by Chef Alex was good and fresh. Some of the highlights of the nigiri were Hotate, Chutoro, Otoro and Sweet Shrimp. Each nigiri already come season by chef Alex so please no dipping. Fish to rice ratio was perfect. My only complaint and the reason that I gave a 3.5 stars was that the (Shari) sushi rice was very mushy and wasn't season at all. My wife did enjoy her lunch set which came with 2 hand rolls, sashimi, chicken yakitori and egg roll. Service was fantastic and very friendly. Chef Alex was fantastic as well. Overall, Umiko Sushi Ray looks very promising. I would definitely give Uniko try again. Until our next visit. read more

We stopped in for a quick bite around dinner time. Nice restaurant inside, feels upscale and like a great date spot. Not a ton of seating, they have some table seating and seating around the bar. We just got the 3 handroll set each which includes tuna, salmon and your choice of salmon tempura or shrimp tempura. I preferred the shrimp tempura over the salmon. We just thought they were okay, the seaweed wasn't the crispy kind that I like with handrolls. It was soft seaweed. I prefer other spots for handrolls. There also wasn't a lot of fish inside each one, though the quality of the fish seemed pretty good. I'd be curious to try out their sushi and sashimi sometime. Easily one of the worst sushi experiences I've ever had. We walked in around 6pm on a Tuesday and not a single other person was dining there. Bad sign, but the reviews were good so we gave it a shot. Bad choice. The rice was watery and bunched up in the Rolls Royce Roll and our salmon and toro nigiri. The toro was grey, super fishy, and gross. The crispy rice spicy tuna was the only thing we could eat, and it was just okay. The woman helping us was very nice and offered to remake everything, but at that point we didn't want to risk it. She took the nigiri off our bill, which we appreciated. Unfortunately, the sushi itself was truly awful. read more

Been wanting to try this place and finally had the time when we were at an event at the Tarzana cultural center. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. It was Saturday night so it was a little busy but they took reservations which is nice. We ordered the edamame which had a Smokey sweet flavor, which was different but still good. We also had spicy tuna crispy rice. We love that the rice is flat and not too much rice. I also ordered the Fireman or firehouse roll I think, which was delicious! Just the right amount of heat and love the lemon slice! Would definitely order again! We also got miso soup, rice, and nigiri. The restaurant is very pretty, and I love the Japanese wave wall.
