As if Makeda's couldn't get any better, they have just introduced a food innovation that has completely changed the culinary landscape. ETHIOPIAN BURRITOS! That's right. You can now enjoy those delicious Ethiopian flavors in a easy-to-eat package., using their injera bread as a wrapping. Currently they are offering chicken, beef, salmon, and vegan varieties. I had the chicken burrito and it was fantastic. I think they also added their red lentils and some greens in it. And maybe other stuff. The flavors were absolutely popping! But wait, it gets even better. Their injera bread is now completely GLUTEN-FREE! So now people with gluten sensitives can enjoy burritos again. How cool is that?? This dish, temtumo, is a lentil dish, yet different. The spices smell wonderful and give heat that you feel, but not overpowering. The injera contrasts with the lentils and tames the heat. The tang of the injera is good-basically, an Ethiopian sourdough flatbread. Good service. The only thing I would want to change is that it would be nice if it was served a bit warmer and less lukewarm-nothing that a trip to the microwave can't fix, but just something to note. I tried Makeda's for the very first time during a unique circumstance. It was during the Juneteenth Celebration at Alton Park. They were slammed with hungry attendees so the wait for the food was longer than it would be normally. That experience is not what I am reviewing today. My review is solely of the food, which was fantastic! You can tell that they take great pride in serving high quality of food, taking their time perfecting each dish. I ordered their Alecha. A vegetarian dish made up of cabbage, potatoes, and carrots. Every component of the vegetables were made beautifully and the textures perfect. But the star of the show was the Injera. Oh the Injera! It was so tasty and you can tell it was just freshly prepared. A fermented flatbread with a delightful tang and a satisfying spongy texture combined with a subtle crunch. Ethiopian food was a hit! Well flavored red lentil dish called Temtumo. Flavor was perfect with the added spices from the garlic, ginger, and caramelized onions. The injera flatbread was super spongy and complements the heat from the lentil dish. Do yourself a favor and get a side of crispy wontons (sambusa) for a dollar. These babies are deep fried lentils with a nice crisp to change up the soft texture from the rest of your meal. Kudos to having vegan friendly options & kudos to the sweet owner's wife. Excellent Ethiopian food. I had the beef tibs and my wife had one of the veggie plates, both were good. I was worried that the Eugene area was never going to get a good Ethiopian place. The Ethiopian place in Springfield is subpar, but this place is great, despite being a food truck. Two things to note: the portions were smaller than I expected. Normally, when I go into an Ethiopian sit-down restaurant, I expect to pay about $20 and get enough for two meals worth. This food truck sensibly charges $10 and gives you one meal's worth of food. That is good, because, if I want two portions, I can just order a second one. But it was different from what I would expect from an Ethiopian place, just as a heads up. Second, it took them a little while for us to get our order. Maybe a hair shy of twenty minutes. For most Ethiopian places, that would be fast, but for most foodtrucks, that is quite slow. The workaround...order online ahead of time and send them a text just to make sure that your order went through. The family that runs has there own ordering website. You can use Doordash and the other apps, but if you want to support them more, use their website. Eugene, we need more Ethiopian places, Ethiopian is the most delicious cuisine that you have never tried. Show Makeda's some love. read more

The lady who was at the window was also super friendly. I will say that the level 4 spice wasn't as spicy as I though it would be. I like really spicy though. Amazing Ethiopian food in the heart of Eugene! We were so excited to see this open, especially as a food truck. It's so great to have so many options in downtown Eugene. We visited last Friday and tried the Doro Wat, Beef Tibs, and the Samusas. Everything was phenomenal. The injera was sour and perfectly made, and everything was super flavorful--no forks necessary! Great new place! Even though I arrived at the end of the day and they were out of vegetarian options, the owner whipped up not one but two off-menu dishes for me, which was very generous. (Granted, future customers shouldn't presume she can always do that--she was being extremely kind!) She made shiro (smooth chickpea stew) and gomen (spinach), both of which were delicious, and nice and spicy from green chilis. Wow, first time having Ethiopian food and we loved it! We ordered the Beef Tibs because we were really hungry and there was a bit of a wait for their popular Doro Wat. It seems like they sold out since it's the most asked for dish. They have a very small and simple menu, which I like. They have options for meat lovers and options for vegetarians/vegans. While we waited for our order, we could see them making the food. Looks like they put in a lot of work into it and the kitchen looks clean as well. The two people working there (owners I'm guessing), were very friendly and made us feel welcomed. It was also nice to see that they accept credit/debit cards. I saw a couple of 3rd party delivery stickers, so you can find them on UberEats and Grubhub. Now, as for the food, it was delicious! I can't compare it to any other Ethiopian place, since this is the first time that we've tried this cuisine. The Beef Tibs had tender meat, a flavorful sauce, yummy veggies, the right kind of spice, and good spongy Injera. We had never even heard of Injera but it was fluffy/spongy and sour. The flavor mixed well with the bold notes from the Beef Tibs. Our plate also came with one Samusa, which we had to go back and order more of. These are small crispy pastries filled with lentils, peppers, onions, and garlic. Overall, a great experience starting with the customer service all the way to the last bite. I definitely recommend this place and I hope to see them succeed. COVID has hit small businesses hard, and I'd really like to see the food truck scene come back! read more

I love this food cart! 3-way tie for my favorite dish between the lentils, the chicken and the beef. I always try to convince hubs that yes, we need all three! Potatoes and carrots are also delish.
