Writing this today because I just had service done by these guys and I want this review to be honest and fresh. I'll be 100% real. I was hesitant about going to this place after reading recent reviews, but after calling tire-rack.com and saying they back their "independent third party installers" I pulled the trigger. Services Requested Ordered wheels and tires from tire-rack.com so I needed to have those installed in addition to new performance brake rotors. Got a wheel alignment as well. Managment Nick was the principle person I was interfacing with. I called to "make an appointment" but he didn't take my name or info over the phone, so this is a first come first serve place. Nice guy. All business. Greeted me when I got there. Gave me direction on what to expect and no surprises when it came time to pay. Service My mechanic was named Vladimir. Surface read he seems pretty knowledgeable. What I needed to get done is pretty routine so that is always good at a mechanic shop. We ran into a small issue with my rear e-brake, but the manager was able to resolve and it wasn't an issue at all. Didn't get the wheel alignment guys name, but they do this all the time so it's SOP for them. No issues. Turn Around Time Nick quoted me on the phone that the whole thing would take 2 hours. It took 3. It's a weekend and I don't have much going on so no big deal for me. I would suggest getting there at or before they open. Overall Happy to say this place didn't live up to some of those 1 star reviews. The pricing is reasonable. I got my wheel alignment done for 50 bucks on all 4 wheels. Tire-rack offered a coupon so I took advantage. This place is pretty decent. Pro Tip I had a portable/beach chair in my trunk so I got to sit instead of stand around for 3 hours. Passenger stopped the door, came to them left for repair. They changed the lock in the door and invited me, informing me that the car was ready, I arrived and was very razchecherovan they did not even check their work, the door did not work. They apologized and said they'll do it now. I stood for another 1.5 hours and they returned my car to me and a miracle, the door opens perfectly! But I didn't have to worry for a long time, closing all the doors with the key, this door remains fully open. Now they show me their displeasure and carelessly take my car back and say that I would look for another workshop. As a result, I sweat half a day on them, they could not do anything, the entire cabin of the car was in oil and fuel oil, they ruined the door of their doors with a non-professional profile! read more

Dropped my car in at 8 AM for an oil change and tire rotation, to have a check engine light and a noise diagnosed. Couldn't reach anybody by 4 PM, so I decided to go see. The car was parked on the street. Was told the oil change wasn't done yet, it was about 4:45 PM. Wasted a whole day and didn't even get a simple oil change done. How is it that no one has yet reviewed this majorly impressive shop? As the sort of eccentric who treats his car like a kid (in some cases better than a kid -- even though both require occasional discipline), I first dealt with Major Tire two years ago, after ordering a new set of tires from The Tire Rack. Becoming a Tire Rack partner was a good move by Major Tire, because that relationship gained them my repeat business. I was initially reluctant to traverse "all the way down" to Gravesend (um, 20 minutes from Park Slope), but there is an added advantage that they are also right next to the F train @ Avenue X, so I am easily able to drop off my car and return home. Aside from tires, Major Tire also performs a wide variety of additional services. I've seen them doing everything from engine rebuilds to tune-ups. As my car is out of warranty, and I've grown tired of paying BMW labor rates for routine maintenance, I have over the last few years used them for everything from state inspections to a full installation of brakes (rotors and pads all around). They are happy to order name brand parts via the local dealer, and I am happy to pay them less eye-watering labor rates for equally courteous service. As a casual neighborhood shop, Major Tire may not offer the immaculate plushness of a premium car dealer experience, but they are a trustworthy and honest establishment that have always taken good care of my kid... er, um, car. Never have I been reunited with the frisky critter only to find grease slathered across the steering wheel, a pinup calendar discarded in the trunk, or molded doughnut crumbs in the foot wells. Came to Major Tire to fix a flat, went into the shop and the owner said they could fix it, just pull up to the side. I pull up to their side garage for tire repairs and honk, as the sign on their door says, no response or movement. I wait a little before honking some more. After 10 minutes I see movement inside and one of the mechanics come out, walk past me without any acknowledgement, and proceed to walk away. I just left at this point, there were at least 4 mechanics in the shop with one customer. Don't bother with this place. I drove down the block to ATS lighting and they fixed up my tire quicker than this place bothered to acknowledge me. read more

I went to Major Tire based on (1) good reviews on Yelp; (2) my car dealership service office not being able to do tire repairs; and (3) Major Tire being open on a Saturday. I have to say that I love Floyd. I can forgive this business for being one of the scariest shops I've been in, what with the Russian/Eastern European guys working here, the lack of a formal waiting area, and having to wait in the back of the shop where no one can see you or hear you, because Floyd was such a good guy. It's the first time I've been in a repair shop and walked out having spent only the "change" in my pocket - $10 to fix my tire. Floyd was wonderful about the whole process. He explained what could be wrong with my tire since it had a slow leak; he checked my other tires (letting me know that I'd overfilled one); he showed and explained to me what he was doing to fix my tire (the rim was damaged and had to sealed); and then gave me advice on how to not get ripped off simply for being a woman. I was really happy with the whole process and was glad to tip him for saving my tire AND saving me from paying so much. I just drove past a dozen other tire / tire repair / flat fix / gas stations to come here, based on the Yelp reviews. And I am glad I did. According to the guy at the cash register, this place has been in business for 56 years. That suggests that they are doing something right. Floyd took a look at my tires and explained that we obviously do not rotate our tires. (He is right -- every 6,000 miles or every two oil changes. Thanks for the info!) He suggested that we needed new tires, but almost apologized for having to tell me that. He showed me how the side walls of my tires had cracks in them, and how the steel belts were close to breaking through. I got a chance to talk to another customer of his, who has been coming to this shop for 30+ years, and she attests that safety is their number one concern and that is why she and her husband bring their tire issues to these guys. Floyd also showed me how my tires had been "plugged" but not properly given an internal patch. I had no idea there was a difference, but it certainly makes sense to me. As another reviewer said, Floyd knows he answers to "the man upstairs" and when he gets there he "doesn't want to have any bad marks on his books." As others have pointed out, they keep the garage messy --- which I guess makes sense because they do good work and so are too busy to make the place spic-and-span. Give me a messy garage and an honest, friendly mechanic like Floyd any day over a clean garage and someone who doesn't know what he is doing. Thank you Floyd! Blew my tire out when in Brooklyn at a doctor appointment with my 2year old . This place was conveniently less than a mile from where I was and the service was excellent. Unfortunately, I didn't have my credit card on me and the owner took whatever cash I had to pay for the tire and get my daughter and I back on our way to NJ. We were in and out in less than an hour . I am VERY pleased with this place. It wasn't that hard to find either and the service is great. I needed to get an oil change and fix my tire, so i called them up and came right away. As soon as i came they worked remarkably fast. They quickly changed the oil and fixed the tire and it wasn't half-as work at all. The mechanic that worked with my car was very friendly too, and i like how they put effort into making sure that the car was well done. This is my second time coming here and i probably will continue to come here to get my car fixed. The boss is very kind too, i met him when i first went to get an oil change and he is a very kind Russian man named Sergei and ran his business very well. I bought new tires online, needed a place to install them. Called around and went with this shop in the end. They quoted a better deal than other shops I called to remount and balance new tires. Workers were knolegable, it took about half hour to finish. Tires were balanced to perfection on some advanced computerized machine with lasers. The mechanic who worked on my tires was a seasoned proffessional with over 40 years experience working with tires. I'm happy with the work and tips on tire maintenance Floyd gave me. They junked my old tires for $2.50 a tire, also a good deal for not having to haul them to the dump myself. read more

Definitely avoid taking your vehicle to this shop! Firstly, there are a lot of other reviews about the integrity of the staff, and my experience adds to the complaint. On State inspections, they don't inspect the car. They made up a problem with break pads, on my 38k miles vehicle, which was simply made up. After they convinced me to pay for the replacement, my breaks became noisy and felt strange. When I came back, they said it is transmission issues and told me it will be thousands of dollars to fix and that they might not even be able to do that. The issues came as soon as they replaced my breaking pads (With no breaking pad problems at all). Now I need to find another mechanic to take a look at the new issues they caused. Secondly, my experience at this shop was terrible. Not only that the staff is absolutely unprofessional and rude, they hit my car by backing into it with another customer vehicle. As soon as that happened, they jumped at the other customer, who was male, and began promising him everything to prevent any consequences. To me however, a woman who doesn't know much about cars to what it may look like, they did not even apologize. In fact, the first thing they did was driving both cars away from each other, as far from line of sight as possible. When I confronted them, they asked me "Well, what do you want?" in the most rude way possible. Upon looking at the damage done to my bumper, they began trying to convince me it is "not a big deal" and only after I wanted to call the police to get a report, they offered to order the part they damaged. The man said it costs him over a thousand, but he will still order it for free "because you are our customer". weeks later, after I called to ask if they received the part, which they did and never bothered to call me about it, I was told to come over so they can set it up. When I arrived, They tried fitting it, the man was having a hard time, and I noticed the part doesn't fit, so I pointed out that it is a part for a different model, they stopped working, checked part numbers and admitted I was right, in fact is was a part for a different car model. The man who was dealing with me became angry, pulled out two hundred dollars and told me "here you go, it was nice to have you as a customer, we are even". Basically, the part he told me costs him over a thousand, apparently costs two hundred now, and he refused to do anything else about it. My experience was horrible in this place, they exploit customer ignorance, overcharge, their attitude is horrible and unprofessional. Avoid this place if you value your time, money and vehicle. I'm planning to write a complaint to BBB followed by another to the DMV, about their shady practices and customer fraud. After seeing all these negative reviews around the internet on this shop, anyone who plans to do the same should do it with me, because they can lose their license. read more

Nicholai (Koliya in Russian) is a very reasonable, honest man. Tirerack.com delivered my tires to them and I decided to change them to winter set before even visiting this tire place. Nick was very kind and understanding and didn't charge me for the time the four tires were taking up place in his shop for two weeks. Why two weeks? Because of UPS incompetency. When my winter tire-wheel packages arrived, his men installed them quickly on Saturday morning after only a ten minute wait time. The fees were very small. Great service all around. So I've been putting off to repair a rear tire that has been nailed for a couple of months since I have noticed it (yes, I know it is a bad idea driving it for that long). Recently, the air leaking out has just gotten worse, most likely due to all the NYC's pot holes after this season's long wintry mess. I came across this spot since it has gotten great reviews about it and decided to give it a shot. I called and made sure the place was open, since it doesn't post its business hours. Was given a quote of $20 to fix the hole. So I went over and was greeted by Floyd. Once I jumped outta my car, he went straight to work. Asked me "So which one is it?," and I told him. Took the tire off after a couple of nudges with a hammer (I didn't mind about it hitting the back of the rim, after all, how in any other way is a rusty rim gonna come loose in a shop?) Found 1 nail and I asked if he was sure it was only one because I thought I did see two nails lodged in two different spots previously. So he relentlessly went all around the tire a couple of times carefully again to make sure with out any hesitation. That was what I call customer service. Eventually he patched it back up with great work. Out of courtesy he even cleaned off some rust from the rim and and the brake disk with a rotary wire mesh. Floyd was such an open minded person and would love to have a great chat with his customer while working. Overall, this spot stayed true to its many positive reviews and they were only possible because of Floyd's great customer service. Got me back on the road in about 30 minutes and total came out to $20, tips included. This place only does the patch method, so if you're looking for real quality and not some lame old plug work, this is the right spot for the right price. Most of all, I gotta give this guy respect. Been in the auto profession since 18 and still doing some heavy labor at age 62! I would definitely come back and recommend this spot to anyone who is looking for professional service at a cheap price. read more

They do a pretty good job here. I probably wouldn't want to come here if Floyd didn't work here. He's the old mechanic with over 40 years of experience under his belt. He made me feel very confident that my car was being taken care of well. He is extremely thorough and careful with the car. For instance, when the other mechanic was just going to put the tire on any way, Floyd stopped him and made sure the guy put it on so the tire pressure sensor wasn't going to be damaged. However where this place really shines is in the tire/wheel area with "Floyd". With Floyd the customer comes first. If you need work done related to tires/wheels ask for him. STAY AWAY !!!! Extremely UNPROFESSIONAL ! Came there to change 2 front control arms and 2 wheel hubs with bearings !! Work was done but not the wheel hubs ! only bearings ! on my question why they didn't change the hubs owner assured me it was not needed even though i paid for it and if the problem i got will not go away he will change the hubs!!!! went to tire rotation around the block , after removing one of the front wheels we found that left CV joint was damaged by the shop !! and most important the problem i came to solve with wheel hubs still there !!!! came back to the shop ! Cv joint was changed ! but wheel hubs the same !! Owner assured me that next week if the problem still there he will change the hubs !!! came to the shop and owner refuses to do the job stating i need to pay more ?????? Didn't i paid for this job already ??? went to another shop next day .. changed the hubs and problems solved !!!! filed a complaint to bureau of automotive repair and small claim curt !! Assuming that the damage is can be fixed, a patch and plug will be applied at your request; there may be cases where Floyd will say a patch is good enough, however it's best to do the patch/plug combination. Purchased tires from tirerack and had them sent here for mounting and balancing. The place is messy and dirty but the job was done. Floyd took care of the tires and was a pleasure to meet and have the work done by him. Very nice guy and was willing to explain what he was doing and what to look out for. I work on cars and all his advise was spot on. He took care of the wheels as if it was his own. 5 Stars for Floyd. I also had an alignment done by another tech there. He performed the alignment to spec but didnt take any time getting the camber or toe on each side close to each other. So if manufacturer spec for rear camber is min:-.8 and max:-1.5, and the measurements for my car showed -1.4 on the driver side and -.8 on the passenger, he wouldnt bother adjusting anything even though its a .6 degree difference. It took the tech 10 mins total for the job. It looked like he only adjusted rear toe because it was highlighted red on the machine. Didnt touch the fronts because they were green but there was a big difference in camber and toe measurement from each side(within spec though). Not a big deal as this is a secondary vehicle but little things like that are how you get repeat customers, referrals and good tips. Hopefully the alignment machine is calibrated and measuring correctly. Also saw the same tech put wheel lock nuts on another customers car with an impact gun and not do the star pattern to tighten the wheel on the hub. The car had 2 lock nuts on each wheel. He was careful to hit the lock nuts with a light trigger instead of a hard squeeze but with 2 lock nuts on one hub, id be worried about them not being fully torqued down. The prices are very fair and i would go back again(only because i can spot when things are done right or not and would point it out to them for correction or just fix it myself later). read more

I have run flat tires on 19 inch factory rims. Everyone told me have the dealer replace the bubble tire, but they wanted a small fortune. I ordered the tire from tire rack for $150 less. I looked on their site for recommended installer and saw this place was fairly close to my house. When i got there i was hesitant to go in due to the way the place looked. I walked around the shop with no one asking me what i needed until some kid with a heavy eastern european accent asked me what i needed? He told me ask for Floyd. I came back in an hour asked for Floyd. After speaking with Floyd, i felt confident to let him do the work. He was confident in what he was doing and knew all the technical details I read about online. Best of all he balanced my tire with a Hunter Road Force machine that looks fairly new. I have no hesitation recommending this place for tires as long as Floyd does the work. As for the owner, a word of advice, don't treat your business like a social club. This scares people from pulling in with their luxury cars. read more

I bought the tires online and they were delivered by FedEx to the local installer in only 3 days. I went to Major Tire in the morning and as soon as I arrived Floyd greeted me and began working on my car in less than 5 minutes. Floyd is a real pro. I usually keep an eye on my car when mechanics work on it, but trust me, after meeting Floyd you will know that you can leave your car without worrying and when you pick it up the job will be done 100% right . He is very honest and likes to explain and show what he does. I'm not a newbie in mechanics and I know that stuff backwards, but it's always nice when someone walks you through the whole process while you watch it being done. They have a Hunter Roadforce machine which is a must have for proper balancing. My rims were slightly bent from Brooklyn potholes but Floyd managed to balance it perfectly. I was happy to tip him well for his excellent work. I took my car on the highway immediately to check it out at 70 mph and it rides smooth like butter.
