Disappointing Experience for Our Large Group Our group of 15 goes out every Wednesday for sushi night, typically spending around $700 to $800. This week, our usual spot had a long wait, so we decided to try this new place. We called ahead to check the wait time and were told we could be seated in five minutes. True to their word, we were seated right away upon arrival, which we appreciated. However, the positives ended there. The service was just OK, and the food was subpar--not what we expected for the price we paid. But the most surprising part of the night was when we were informed around 8:15 PM that it was last call. By 8:30 PM, they began turning off the lights, signaling the end of service and essentially rushing us out. This was after we had already spent $815 on our meal. It felt like they were more interested in closing up than accommodating a group that had just spent a significant amount. It's a shame that they don't seem to value their customers, especially those who are willing to spend generously. If you're looking for a good dining experience with quality food and respectful service, I suggest looking elsewhere. So be patient and don't give up if you can't find parking. Chef's Sashimi (tuna, salmon, albacore, and yellow tail) - Honestly this was a meal and so much more. The sashimi pieces were thiccc af, fresh out of the water fresh and just melted in my mouth. I was not expecting that at all. This alone was so much food. I could barely finish it. It went deliciously with the sauce they provided, but it was a beast for me to finish. 3 combination bento - For the bento I chose the mixed tempera, sashimi and the crunch roll. This one was also a big portion of food. The tempera was not too oily and the dipping sauce made it so tasty. The sashimi was melt in your mouth goodness. Not a great experience. We did ayce sushi here, and there were quite a bit of rules when doing ayce. It was a bit confusing so I ordered wrong, and the tall Asian waitress raised her voice at me saying that I didn't read the directions. She was like, "I told you to read the directions but you didn't!" I did read the directions but I misunderstood it. She could have nicely explained it when she saw it was wrong. Very rude. Food was alright. There was a TON of rice for the nigiri. Fish quality was hit or miss. Salmon and eel was good, tuna not so much. I don't think it is truly ayce if you have to limit how many pieces of nigiri or rolls you can order. And pretty expensive considering the limitations placed on how much you can order. Aright I came two weeks ago and ordered and basic crunch roll and it was good, the tools have gotten bigger since last time I visited when they were skimming the portions. My sushi roll had old rice it was crispy on the top and the seaweed was hard to chew, I was starving if not I would have sent it back. Maizuru now has AYCE sushi! Not only can you choose the rolls, you can even order udon, tempura, teriyaki beef or chicken and much more. The quality of the sushi was excellent and the service was great! We came hungry and was sure we would go three rounds, but only made two rounds since we were stuffed! A+++++ and the price is reasonable for AYCE. Of course if you don't want AYCE, they gave other things like bento box and yakisoba. First time visiting. Tried their all you can eat for $38. First round - too generous with their rice on all rolls and sushi to the point we had to-remove some of the rice and left on our plate. Thought fish ordered first round was fresh and looked forward to bringing my family and friends but that changed when the hostess told us that we had to finish the leftover rice or get charged for leftover before we order our next round. $2 charge per leftover was not the issue, but their trick to add more rice to each item so you get full fast so you don't order more and then charge you extra for the extra rice as leftovers they on purpose added, I thought was pretty unethical, especially from a Japanese restaurant. Of course when the hostess saw our surprised look, she graciously agreed to not charge us.. this time. Ordered 2nd round and their salmon eggs and squid tasted old. Generously marbled! Tuna - not good! Chewy and hard. Mackerel - very good! Toasted edges with sesame oil Crunchy roll - just a California roll with flakes California roll - ordinary. It's a good local spot. I wouldn't make a special trip from LA or anything. Not hip or trendy. The tuna was not good. But the yellowtail, salmon, mackerel was good! This business is a scam. Don't pick the AYCE or don't go here. It's just rice and rice and it's not good. I can't finish either 1 dish. Before give them the order, i asked how many pieces/order, they told me 2 pieces/order but it's 8 pieces/order and 1 piece is the haft size of a regular rice bow. I want to check the camera but they didn't agree. They told me why don't see carefully at the menu. But i don't really understand that why i was ask directly to them. They told me must to pay $64 extra for the leftovers and i can take all home. My son is 5 years old was charged for $21/kid. I usually eat the AYCE sushi restaurant in Hungtinton Beach, it's so good and doesn't have a lot of rice comparing to this place. I've been eating here since I was a kid. I've referred a lot of friends and family here and most of the staff know me by face. The food has always been good. The service is usually good too. Friday or Saturday nights if I decide to eat alone I try to come here. The last few times I've come it's been a bit later (8:45-9:00). I'm always courteous I know what I want and I get in and out well before closing time at 10. The last couple times this lady has given me so much attitude and guilt that I hadn't gone there for a while. Today I decided to go and got here at 9:14PM immediately greeted by the same woman with an angry face asking me "are you going to eat here or what". I replied yes and she grabs a menu to take me to a seat and says "you know we close at 9:20 right" keep in mind the door says they close at 10 and there are 6-7 other parties and food still being made at the sushi bar. I said I didn't and she says "well you can eat anyway it's ok" at this point I'm already guilty and embarrassed and I just tell her it's fine and leave but after almost 16 years of coming here I'm officially done. The place was always family friendly and had great service and even if I'm in the wrong for showing up a bit late it's still no way to be treated for someone who they know has been eating there for this long. read more

We have been coming to this sushi bar for over five years. The fish is very low quality. Very disappointing udon bowls with only one piece of shrimp tempura. Other sushi restaurants have different vegetables in the tempura udon. the quality has definitely gone down over the last several years. I am really pleased to share with you my very positive experience here at Maizuru. It is tucked away in the center part of this strip mall, but sits amidst other eateries that are really good as well. However, on this occasion, Sushi was the food of choice. It appeared this evening that Maizuru was the local favorite as the place was pretty full (excluding the Sushi Bar) with patrons. The entrees that I saw were very plentiful and appeared to be prepared with authentic care. I settled in on a bottle of Sake to accompany my meal which was a perfect choice as it was on the dry side. For dinner, I ordered the Carpaccio (Yellow Tail), and the Sushi Plate that allows one to select from four choices of fish. I went with the Tuna, Yellowtail and Albacore. As you can see from the picture, the Carpaccio is served on a bed of shredded radish and topped with Ponzu and Jalapeno peppers. This fish was very fresh and not as spicy as could be as the peppers were absent any kind of kick. Tasty nevertheless. If I ordered this item in the future, I would ask for a side of Ponzu as a dipping option since the sauce was mostly absorbed in the radish. I used the soy/ginger bowl for dipping, but it was not the same. Don't be discouraged from ordering this as the fish was great quality. My second dish (apologies for not taking a picture) was a plate of Sashimi served on a bed of greens. Honestly, the greens were not something I was expecting, but was a nice change and was actually tasty as it was served with a light house dressing. The portions are very good as in thick and sufficient to make a good meal. All of the cuts were very fresh and ranked up there with solid spots other Sushi fans. To top this evening, I ordered a Salmon Skin handroll. This was very good and had an incredibly generous portion of freshly roasted Salmon. If anyone fancies a Salmon Skin handroll and you stop in, I highly encourage you to add it to your order. I was very graciously served by Sushi Chefs Eric and Nori (yes, that was his name) who steered me and others at the Sushi Bar on great options with good descriptions. My original plan was to try another spot, but had to change plans due to a miscommunication, but it totally worked out in the end with this very positive experience. If it's a Japanese entree or Sushi you are craving and are in the neighborhood, I really encourage you to give this a try. Parking is abundant and the service is prompt and friendly. This is more of a mid-tier sushi option with a lot of of rolls and dishes like udon and tempura. We came as a party of 6 on a Friday evening as it was one of the only restaurants that were still open and could seat our group immediately. The food came out quickly and was decent considering the price point. The udon tasted like an instant package but that was pretty expected and standard for Japanese places like this. They packaged my leftovers very nicely, even separating the noodles and broth. One issue we had though was there was lipstick still on one of the tea cups which is why I knocked off a star. Came around 5:30p on a Sunday and it was pretty empty. Liked their 1/2 sized (4 pieces), 1/2 priced rolls so we could try different things. I would come back if in the area, but wouldn't go out of my way to come here. Aloha- I liked the combo of salmon and eel though I could barely taste the eel as it was a very thin slice. Genkians Irvine were both spicy and good. Baked Scallop- this was just okay compared to other restaurants. Some scallops were a bit overcooked. Sushi here is par for the course. Inflationary prices seem to hit harder here than at some other place. The sushi here is not very good quality, but offers a variation of fusion uramaki at relatively mid-ranged prices. While the fish is not great, it is better than that at the Tustin location of Sake2Me. Depending on the roll, expect to pay ~20 dollars a roll after tip. Not the worst pricing, given the relatively large portions, but nothing impressive either. The rolls that I got were Eel Special Roll, Garlic Albacore Roll, Irvine Roll, Baked Spicy Langostino Roll, Harbor Roll which were all amazing :) But my favorite are Irvine Roll and Garlic Albacore Roll. Each roll was unique to this sushi restaurant and the flavors hit the spot. Their fish are fresh which you can see from the colors especially the sashimi and poke salad were really goood. The tempura were well fried :) The teriyaki on the chicken teriyaki is made in the house which was a classic. The best sushi spot in Irvine. I say this without a doubt. They have the best rolls in town. I have been going here for over 10 years now. Whether you're doing takeout or dining in, they will treat you with great service. They have had nearly the same staff since they opened. You can tell they work as a family. I love coming in here alone, with friends, my partner, or a my family. They have a good sake and beer selection, they have happy hour during the week. They also offer "half rolls" when dining in so that you can try more rolls or maybe you want some more but can't eat an entire roll, this is the best option and it is exactly half the price of a full roll.
