My time in the Mainzer was pleasant. The food was fine - I didn't expect much when looking at the menu, but I still didn't feel satisfied with my meal. But the drinks! The drinks became the stars of the show. The classic margarita went down smoothly, but crept up over the course of the meal. The Bloody Mary, however, was an entity unto itself. Never before has such a combination of hot sauce, jalapeño, and spices been tossed into tomato juice and vodka in a more perfect blend. I wish I could have the recipe for the mix! The bartender (Haven) did a fantastic job mixing drinks and being a personable face of the establishment. I ordered the fish n chips. The fish was nice and juicy and the fried breading was delightfully crispy! But it had no flavor. The tartar sauce was plain, but the vinegar was incredible. I have never tasted anything quite like it; it was something between sesame and peanut sauce, and classic malt vinegar. This kind of illustrates my experience of the evening: the "main event" (the entree) was meh, but the "side shows" were excellent. I also had the onion tower and didn't expect much, but was pleasantly surprised by the jalapeño aioli. Wow, it tasted like the essence of fresh jalapeño! The onion rings themselves were (again) plain, but they were fried perfectly. The lights in the dining area are way too bright - I felt like I was in a cafeteria. The waitstaff were top notch, and I can't recommend Haven enough. All in all it was a pleasant evening, but unfortunately that was only possible because of the transcendental drinks they were serving. read more

Made a reservation for a high top thinking we could sit near/at the bar area to kick off a fun birthday weekend. Upfront was told nothing was available inside even though everything was almost empty. Turns out a large water polo group came in 30 minutes later. Sat outside on the sidewalk seating when it was 90 degrees. Luckily we got a table in the shade because other groups had to keep moving their own umbrellas. It was hot and uncomfortable. Service was definitely prioritized for the large group because our food was cold, our server barely came around and the water polo group was hanging around outside near our table on the sidewalk and also took over the fun looking arcade room. read more

The atmosphere here is very vintage awesome all the way from the decor to the food and beverages. First time here and right out of the gate everyone was very friendly explained the self serve tap system. My wife and I had the spicy fried chicken sandwich, and royal with cheese. We also had the fried pickles for an app which if I could take a bathtub full of that sauce served with them I would. We will be back and I highly recommend. read more

Delicious. I have been wanting to take my husband here since the first time I had lunch at the Mainzer. I finally had a chance today. Started with the homemade guacamole and blue corn chips. Yummy. Really awful. They didnt have most of the dishes from the yelp photos. I got the baked eggs with braised meat. It was incredibly over salted, the potatoes were undercooked, and the salad was drenched in oil and salt. Very unpleasant overall. The tacos were terrible garbage. Never coming back. Just passing through and our hotel recommended Mainzers. it was an eclectic space with great wait staff and good food. My Cobb salad w/ chicken was fresh, had good presentation and the fresh dill added a nice flavor. The roasted Brussels sprouts had great flavor but could have been cooked a little longer. I had high hopes for this place, but was seriously let down. I went with my husband and 4 kids. The place was fairly empty, but we were told, after sitting down, that since we were "a large party" we would be charged gratuity automatically. I didn't realize a family of 6 was a large party...And I wouldn't have cared, if our server had actually done her job. She brought our water, but only gave us 5, someone else brought our drinks and food. She NEVER even came to check on us. Like I said, they weren't that busy. Someone who appeared to be a manager checked on us, but we didn't see our server until we got our bill. As you can see they tip very nicely when it's automatically added. And lucky for her it was, because I feel like you get paid to do a job, and a tip is for excellent service. Which we didn't get. Not even close. And then to get a tip you didn't earn? First time here and I gotta say I love that Merced is utilizing its historic buildings for fun spots to hangout at. More people should know about this place. The reason I am giving the Mainzer 1 star is not because of the food. It is because I paid the bill with my credit card and the waitress told me that my credit card did not go through, so my son ended up having to pay the bill on his credit card. But unfortunately, both charges went through so we got double charged for our meal. The waitress Diana assured me that my Discover credit card did not go through and I would not be charged even though I received a text message telling me that my Discover card purchase went through. I then spoke to two supervisors and eventually spoke with Shelly. Shelley told me that my Discover card purchase does not show up in their system. I think the Restaurant could've been more helpful to me in terms of customer service. I just had to file a dispute with Discover card to try to get my money back. So there are some customer service issues here. I did not receive any apology from the restaurant for the hassle or double billing my family for the meal. read more

First time coming to the Mainzer and I had a great experience! I have passed by the restaurant many times when I come into town and finally got the chance to try it. Our server, Hailey, was super friendly and attentive throughout our meal. The menu was very limited due to an event. Atmosphere: Parking is very much downtown parking. Either find street parking or park in the garage behind the El Capitan Hotel. The place is remodeled very nicely and is spacious! There is comfortable seating outside and seating inside as well. Beer wall has instructions and is presented very well. The bar looks amazing too. Customer service: The lady in the front was very kind and helped us so many times. Our server was kind as well, but she wasn't as attentive as she could've been. She had a blank face the whole time and didn't come around to collect our payment, which left us confused. Food: The french toast is worth every penny! No regrets! Fried chicken is bomb digs too! I don't know what is is about this place during concerts. Perhaps it would be in their best interest to remind patrons that these musicians spend hours practicing their art and should at the very least be respected for what they do . All during Gypsy Dreams concert, drunken customers talked and laughed loudly to the point where you could hardly hear the band. The guitar player even asked for people to listen to their song in memory of Christie McVie but his request went unanswered. It's bad enough that you pay 90 for a table only to have people stand right in front of you making it hard to see the band. This is the second concert we attended and it may be the last. Production people need to do something. Remind the patrons that they are there for a concert no for some karaoke show. And don't overwork the servers. Worse service ever. read more

I went here with my best friend a couple weeks ago and then again with my significant other this week. Both experiences were nice! We really enjoyed the free skee-ball! It was neat to play a never ending game. The floors are really nice! I like the way they look a lot. There was a show going on when my friend and I went. We had the pleasure of seeing everyone leaving energized with smiles on their faces. I bet the show was amazing! This place is so full of life and community. The food was good as well. Ran across this place while running an errand in Merced. Was reviewed well on Yelp so tried it. Honestly exceeded my expectations. We live in Turlock and the wife and littles loved everything. Today was my firs time visiting this place. The server was great however the service was super long. I'm not sure if they are short staffed or that's just how they work. I work in the food industry as well and I felt the manager (im assuming she was manager) was very rude to her employees. Assuming she was the manager bc she was the only one not wearing the uniform the other's were. She was coaching her employees about not saying "corner" loud enough every time they were hitting a corner and i observed how she literally never said "CORNER" when she was serving herself. Like how would you get others in trouble when you yourself aren't setting the example? The food is okay in my opinion. I felt like it was way too pricy for the quality and time it takes. They try a little too hard on making it look fancy rather than the taste quality of the food. Definitely not my type of place. read more

Came for brunch on a Saturday morning and brought my family visiting from out of town. We had not made any reservations, but we were seated pretty quickly. The waiting area had great games to keep the kids occupied while we waited for our table. The ambiance is modern and relaxed.
