I love this pharmacy! Larry is great! It's a family owned business, dating back to the 1930s! Very cool! And they have neat little things of yore throughout the shop. They're flexible; they work with me to meet my very specific allergy needs, too. AND, one time they accidentally filled an older dose of one of my prescriptions, and when I noticed and let them know, the refilled the correct one free of charge(!) saving me a LOT of money I hope that when (if?) I can get my prescriptions covered, my insurance will still let me use Maida. read more

I give one star because there is no zero stars option. The proprietor of this compounding pharmacy, Lawrence (aka Larry) Maida, doubly deceived me yesterday. I took him a prescription for a new medicine and he took down my name, tel nu, and pharma benefits information. After I left, he called my pharma benefits office and reported to me on the phone that my insurance does not cover compounded medicine. That left me no option but to buy the overpriced pills from him. I did b/c I needed to start the medicine that day and it was already mid-afternoon. I thought we agreed on the phone that he would fill a prescription for 50 capsules at $65, but when I arrived at 5:30 pm he had filled 30 for $65. That is multiples more expensive than the same drug costs at a regular pharmacy. There may have been a miscommunication on the phone, but if so he should have split at least the difference, not forced me to pay for the mistake. That was deception #1. The next day, when I had time to look into things, I called my benefits office myself. It turns out that my insurance DOES cover compounded medicine, it just doesn't cover HIS shop. So he lied to me (deception #2). Instead of informing me that his shop was a "nonmatched pharmacy" or was "not authorized to dispense the medicines" (that's what my benefits manager told me on the phone), he told me my insurance does not cover compounded drugs, so I would buy the meds from him. This kind of dishonest practice -- essentially lying to and fleecing a new customer -- is not only ethically unacceptable it is bad business practice. This businessman should be blacklisted. read more

This is one of the last real neighborhood drugstores, just down the street from yet another soulless CVS. Little wooden drawers and shelves behind the counter, a pay-to-weigh scale, your grandmother's radio music quietly playing, 1950's prices. The lead pharmacist (and owner) and his small staff are consummate professionals, and the wonderful woman behind the counter always remembers my name! Much smaller and less well-stocked than the chain stores, Mr. Maida still has a troupe of loyal customers (including myself). This pharmacy is a rare and true gem. I was visiting from the west coast and required a specialized prescription that Walgreen's was unable to fill. I was referred to Maida and Larry quickly filled my prescription (a mouthwash) on a Friday and was kind to ask what flavor I wanted and provide me with a smaller bottle I could take through TSA. Since then, I have had trouble submitting the claim to my insurance, and both Larry and Angelo were incredibly helpful in providing proper paperwork. I only wish I had a pharmacy like this in my area. read more

They may be good at compounding; they certainly survive on it. If you need to send a multipage fax, that is one service NOT to go to them for, even though they advertise "public fax". They've don't know how to send more than one page per call, or how to set up outgoing faxes while incoming are in progress. I wound up paying 'em $12 just to take my pages back and go somewhere else. read more

This was my first experience speaking to a compounding pharmacy. I talked to the pharmacist and explained that I was hoping to fill a prescription quickly. My goal was to find out if that was possible and what the cost would be. The pharmacist was rather annoyed that I asked for such quick turnaround and then put me on hold for several minutes to calculate the cost. When I heard the cost, I opted not to fill it. It was too expensive. The pharmacist was very annoyed and tried to make me feel guilty due to the amount of work he had done to figure out the cost. Bottom line is this: my request may have been unreasonable given the time frame, and I had no idea that it would be so arduous to calculate the cost of the medication, never having worked with a compounding pharmacy. Certainly will not be calling this pharmacy again. read more

The pharmacist here was so great! My partner needed crutches for a sprained ankle and they sold us wooden ones, which are apparently not as trendy as the aluminum ones, at a major discount and well less than half the price that local chain drugstores were charging for the cheapest crutches. He gave us some advice about how to care for the sprain, including that we should go to a chain drugstore to buy the best ankle brace because they didn't have it in stock. That says a lot about an unbiased opinion. I found a nice Mother's Day card and a hilarious birthday card that looked a little dated (in a kitschy kind of way). I don't remember ever getting such attention at a pharmacy. Their specialty is compounding custom prescriptions, so if you're looking for that then you're in luck. read more

This is a family-owned pharmacy that has been around for a long time and its one of the few compounding pharmacists in the area. I have gone to them in the past for hormone treatment medicines as well as more prosaic prescription and over the counter needs. Although their store is small in size, their selection is remarkable, especially compared to the big box stores. They have a variety of options for every need, and in addition they can provide advice when you're deciding between products. Their prices are reasonable as well. I live right near the Walgreens, where I could go for my prescriptions, and I choose to go all the way down Mass Ave past the theatre to go to this store instead. They're helpful, they're knowledgeable, they're a local family-owned and operated business, and they have items you couldn't find elsewhere nearby. read more

I know people who think well of Maida pharmacy, but my experience there was horrible. I had been using Armour thyroid (natural desiccated pig thyroid), for several years, and preferred it to Synthroid and other T4 only forms of thyroid supplementation. A few years ago Armour became difficult to obtain, and also changed its formulation, which meant that I and many others sought out a compounded form of thyroid similar to Armour. I was practically out of of the medication when I went to Maida to order it, so I placed the order even though they refused to give me even a ballpark price at the time. When I went to pick it up, I was told the price was $150 for a one month (30 capsule) supply. I paid what they charged because I wasn't sure I would be able to find another supplier before I ran out. When I started calling around, I found three places in the Greater Boston area that charged much lower prices, but ultimately I chose to use a more distant pharmacy that had a particularly high recommendation from a compounding pharmacy that didn't make thyroid extract (and that charged even less money for each prescription). read more
