Overall this place is pretty mediocre. Prices are alright but the food quality is blah, i've had much better elsewhere. Main reason it gets 2 stars is because they charge an extra TWO DOLLARS for more rice. I ordered a rice/curry dish and i barely got any rice to begin with. This is a good indication of this restaurant's motivation, more interested in cashing in on the good location and neighborhood than trying to provide excellent food and service. read more

We have been coming to this place for years and everything is perfect every single time. Service is friendly, clean place, food comes out fast, warm and delicious. We usually get spring rolls with plum sauce or crispy rolls for appetizer. We love the red and yellow curries, so spicy and delicious. They are so kind to substitute some of the vegetables in the curries that I don't like. The price is fair for fresh food with no MSG. I can't believe anyone would give them less than 5 stars. I've brought friends and family over the years and end up being regular clients themselves. It's also a great place to wait for the train. read more

Best pad thia I have ever had. Delicious curry! (Panang curry!) Great soups and lunch specials for a solid price. Everything tastes super authentic. Bit spicy if your not used to it, but I recommend a mild plus temperature if you just enjoy a little kick... I go here couple times a week, people are great, restaurant is small and family owned. A staple of Wheaton, what are you waiting for go here!! :) read more

The worst service of any restaurant I have ever encountered during covid. Used to be our go to Thai place but never again. Not worth the TERRIBLE service. It's like they don't want customers. read more

I like this restaurant because the tend to serve food on the spicier side. So if you like spicy food this is for you. Authentic and reasonably priced. When you get carryout or dine in they serve in plastic which I don't like. Would prefer paper or another material. read more

This is our thai place. We like everything we've ever tried there and we go back all the time. Its reasonably priced and the staff are beyond warm and friendly. One time they let me stay in the cafe for over 2 hours while i waited for AAA to come help me with my car! They the Panang Curry, Tom Yum Soup and the their pad thai. What else? They aren't pretentious. Honest people trying to make a living and loving what they do. FOSTER THIS LOCAL BUSINESS! read more

We love the food at Mai Thai Cafe. We have eaten here for the last ten years and put up with the declining service and hospitality. We are now officially giving up. We stopped by last Friday at 7:10 for dine in. The restaurant door had a sign for closing at 8 and last orders at 7:30. There were a couple of tables occupied. We came in ready to order only to be told there were accepting taking to go orders. We questioned the sign and the owner simply refused to explain or serve. read more

Great Thai food!! This place never disappoints. I would recommend the garlic stir fry with chicken or the curry fried rice with chicken. I'm not real big on curry but this place does it well! You can choose how spicy you want it as well. Overall great food!! read more

Don't eat here. I ordered chicken pad thai to go for lunch and got diarrhea and nauseousness for 3 days. I was so nauseous I couldn't sleep.

We come here for takeout often! We love this Thai food, and would recommend to anyone. They have never disappointed with taste, efficiency, or customer service! read more

This is our favorite Thai place. They changed the service, so we always do Take Out, but food is amazing. Beware going too hot, they don't skimp on spicy read more

This little cozy place has been our favorite over the years! We go there for a quick meal and are never dissappointed. The place has changed a bit since last year---good efficient service is always sure! Be careful when you pick your spice level, we eat very spicy food and love it we went with 5 and it was extremely hot! I would have given 5 stars but I hate the silverware they offer :( It is annoying to eat good food with cheap silverware! read more

Excellent food. Good service. we order about every other week or so. Haven't had a bad dish yet. Small dining area, we usually get takeout. read more

I used to love this place. But they keep moving the target. Their hours of operation keep changing. The heat of the food is inconsistent. Tonight was the last straw. I called twice, the first time no one answered. When I called back they finally did, but after a long time. I placed my order and the guy seemed really impatient while I was ordering. He asked if it was for the Wheaton location and said it would be ready in 20 minutes. My husband arrived to pick up the food at 7:45pm. Their website and sign on the door said they closed at 8:00pm. They were closed, lights out, door locked. Leaving us very unhappy. I think we're done with Mai Thai. read more

You can't do better in Wheaton... I've been desperately trying to find good Asian food of any kind in Wheaton ever since I moved here from Chicago 4 years ago. I've tried them all in this town, and they range from mediocre to downright terrible... Until Mai Thai. This is my regular Friday night carry out now. Cashew Chicken, Basil Chicken, Ginger Chicken, Crab Rangoon, Spring Rolls. I vary back and forth amongst these. My wife swears by the curry tofu dishes. All of them, delicious. This is a tiny little place, and yes, it has only two parking spaces in front of it but the entire lot has 4 spaces, if you're willing to park 20 feet from the front door. :-) Anyway, I can't say enough about this place. If you want edible Asian cuisine in Wheaton, Illinois, you'll need to just give up on any hope of Chinese, and move onto Thai. If you then want excellent Thai food, you need to go here. I sort of hate to give up my secrets, but this place _must_ stay in business. There really is no alternative out here. read more

We have been ordering from Mai Thai for years. The pineapple fried rice from Mai Thai is amazing!!! My brother always gets the spicy basil beef and loves it. When we order for carry out, the wait time is always on the shorter side which is super nice. The cashew chicken is also very good. We love their cucumber salad, too. Love this place! read more

I have been coming here for years (I usually celebrate my birthdays here since I love their food so much) and recommending their food to all my friends but my visit today was very unfortunate. The restaurant only had a couple of other patrons, we were shoved into a corner right against the wall, Our party of two asked for a table in the middle which apparently seated four, with the restaurant only at 1/4 capacity our waitress rudely told us that they are about to get very busy and she cannot have only two paying customers sit at an empty table of four. Needless to say we simply left and we're happy to go down the street to simply Thai. HELLO MAI THAI YOU LOST A LONG TIME PAYING PATRON!! Good luck with those empty tables read more

Unfortunately, this was some of the worst 'Thai' food I have ever had. My husband & I recently moved to the area & were eager to try this place which is close to our new home. We are avid Thai food eaters so this place was a tremendous letdown. We ordered pad see eiw, combo fried rice, panang curry & crispy spring rolls. Everything we ordered lacked flavor & seriously blew my mind how terrible it was. It tasted like it was cooked by a person at home who was trying to branch out and try some basic Thai recipes. I absolutely love panang curry & the one we ordered here was very bad, it mainly tasted of soy & like that peanut sauce that's normally served with chicken satay. There are so many other Thai places in the Chicago suburbs that are 100% better & also are not overpriced like this place. We will never return. read more

The BEST Thai food in the western 'burbs! I have been coming here for years and I'm not quite sure why I hadn't written a review before now. Yes, it's a hole in the wall type joint, but it is family owned and run and that's what makes this place even more special. The patriarch of the Chanchai family passed away around Christmas time which was devastating as he was the main cook and held all of the "secret" recipes close to his vest. The food and atmosphere hasn't changed one bit since his untimely and unfortunate passing. Once you've been once or twice, Roslyn (their daughter) will recognize you and always has a huge smile on her face. She is a true gem. The lunch specials can't be beat. An entree, a bowl of hot & sour soup and a side salad. Portions are HUGE! Their crab rangoon are great, the tom kha soup is wonderful. I have a battle with myself every time I go whether I should order their Pad See Ew or Pad Thai. Honestly, this is the best Pad Thai I've ever had and it's basically my go to. Spicy Basil Chicken is fantastic. I could go on and on about their wonderful food. They have different levels of spice and heat for you to order I'm telling you this because if you want it hot, they make it HOT! It's crazy how much heat you can get into a dish if you want it. I can tolerate a lot of spice and I usually stick with medium when I order. They can accommodate should you have allergies, you just need to tell them ahead of time when you order. This place only seats about 20 people at once and it can get VERY busy during lunch rush. They're quick with the food and can get you in and out of there fast if you're on a quick time crunch. They don't have a liquor license and they used to be BYOB with no uncorking fee, but that's changed due to Wheaton's ordinances I believe. But to be honest, if you want a glass of wine with dinner, call in for carry out, it won't take but 15 minutes or so for your order to be ready. Get ready for Mai Thai to be around for awhile as well as they have just re-upped their lease for another 8 years. YAY Mai Thai!!! read more

Meh! Rice not rinsed, gummy. Asked for a spicier version of an entree and received an over-sriracha-ed version of a bland entree. Ordered to-go for $30 bucks. Asked for a pouch of chili paste when leaving and they wanted $0.25 for it. REALLY!? I just paid $30 bucks and you want to charge me for chili paste? WTH? Most of the meal was donated to Waste Management. UNjoy! read more

Food is good, not the best Thai I have ever had, but we live close to downtown so it's location is convenient. The convenience stops there. Their hours almost make me laugh. I own retail around the city and I wouldn't think of turning a person away because we are closing in 20 minutes. I appreciate the family friendly nature of the business but if you want to be finishing up at 8 then close at 7:30. Just a tip...neither is good for business, but at least you won't come off as rude if you closed at 7:30. read more

We used to love this place, please check those glowing reviews you see and make sure they aren't old. I think since the dad passed away things have gone downhill. The last 3 times we have gone they have been downright unfriendly, with the young man who works there/is part of the family being the worst. In our last encounter my husband went to get me some tofu soup as I was sick and really wanted something spicy to help clear me up. When he got home the bag clearly said "tofu," but I didn't feel up to eating it. We threw it in the fridge and when I opened it up to eat it for lunch it was chicken. we are used to that mistake, but the guy was so rude when I called. He made me wait while he went to ask the cook what they remembered, he NEVER said I'M SORRY, a really good place would say they were sorry and deliver a new one. Instead the guy reluctantly and without an apology told me I had to repackage the bad soup and bring it back in to get the replacement. Not worth it, go to the place in Glen Ellyn or in Winfield instead read more

Their noodle soups were awesome, especially when it's cold outside. We got their noodle soups twice while we were visiting our friend in Wheaton, so definitely try this place out if you're around the college! You can customize how spicy you want the noodle soups- mild was perfectly good for me. My friend got it medium spicy and it was super hot. Although they have sit and dine-in tables, this place is more like a take out restaurant. If you eat in, you first order at the register and pick up your food yourself. read more

My husband and I stopped in right before we were to attend a Christmas concert. It was around 7:15 p.m. on Saturday night. There were only a couple of other folks in the restaurant so we were seated immediately and received our order quickly, too. I was happy the waitress told us that their dishes tend to be on the spicier side so we ordered ours as mild+. I got the basil fried rice with tofu and my husband go the Pad La (I think it was called.). We both liked our dishes and the spice was perfect, actually I think it was probably the best basil fried rice I have ever had, and I have had a lot. We also liked the tofu as they had prepared it so it was crispy on the outside. Hardly anyone can figure out how to do that it seems. read more

I've gone to Mai Thai many time and over the years had very spotty service. Sometimes it's great and other times it's horrible. Their sign says clearly that they close at 8pm. When I tried to get a table at 7:30 we were turned away being told that they close their kitchen at 7:15. I'm sorry, but having worked in the food industry I know that if a sign says they close at 8 that means the kitchen closes at 8 not 7:15 45 minutes before you close. I won't be going back. read more

Mai Thai is only a couple blocks from my home, so I have gotten take out several times over the past year. The food is always fresh and cooked to order and you can specify spice level when you order. In my opinion the spice runs hot, so I go more mild to medium and that typically turns out right. Particular favorites are their Thai Fried Rice, Panang Curry and Pad Thai. I usually order with Shrimp, but I have beef and chicken as well and they all have been good. Overall I have enjoyed everything that I have tried and the prices are reasonable. My only complaint would be the service, it has never been down right bad, but it is never exactly friendly either. There are just little things, for example they stop serving early before they close, and there are signs about picking up after yourself. It gives me the impression that customers are more of a necessity to be tolerated than a priority for their business. read more

I am obsessed with this place. They Definitely have THE BEST pad Thai. Every waitress is extremely friendly. the service is also very fast and The food comes out piping hot. My boyfriend and I get the exact same thing every time. The crab rangoons are delicious and so is the fried tofu. The sauces they come with are tasty as well. I don't get to come as often anymore cause it's kinda far for me. But if I'm really craving it, it's definitely worth the trip. The only negatives I can think of is the bathroom is pretty dirty and the tables are pretty small. Other than that this is one of my GO TO places whenever I'm in Wheaton. read more

I ordered through phone for pick up. I ordered three things and when I went to pick it up the lady did read me my order and gave me the food. When I got home none of the orders were right and for two of them they put tofu in it instead of chicken. I called to complain but the lady responded that SHE DID NOT RECEIVE OUR ORDER!!! After reading it to me when I got there!! They have no respect for customers trying to make us the dumb one when it's actually them trying to fight and save their money. Horribly dissatisfied and shameful on them. read more

Mai Thai has always been good to me. Freshly prepared Pad Thai for a good price is hard to beat. The restaurant is an understated, carry out style restaurant with a dozen or so tables, and you pick up your own food at a small cut out in the kitchen. None of that bugs me - the food is consistently good and lines are moderate to short because they remove a lot of the flash of other restaurants and stick to what they do best; they make good Thai food. read more

This place is small and placed next to a dry cleaners, but don't let looks deceive you. I came in on a Tuesday night for takeout and the restaurant was almost full. I tried their Yellow Tofu Curry, Lard Na and of course the Pad Thai. The only complaint I had was that the tofu was a little tough, but other than that it was great! It was ready quickly and the portions are large and reasonably priced. read more

We absolutely loved it, some of the best pad thai I've ever had. Prior to our visit I had been craving thai from my favorite place in Chicago and this totally satisfied me and HELLO it's BYOB, total bonus points for that. Our waitress was excellent, attentive & super friendly. Sure it isn't oozing with atmosphere and is very tiny on the inside but the food is good and you can bring your own wine. read more

Eat here all the time. Love everything about it. The food can be hot so order accordingly. I like mild plus, just enough kick for me!!

My rating is about the food. Among the best Thai in the western burbs. Low pretense - great grub. Family-owned and operated. Very unassuming establishment. Everything made fresh to order. As others have said, pad thai is a specialty. read more

the WORST thai place I've ever been to. Two of my friends and I went because we heard the place had good food.... such a lie. We ordered basil chicken, pad thai, and pad see ew. The pad thai and pad see ew were watery and tasteless. The ground chicken in the basil chicken dish was raw so we couldn't eat it. But the little bit we did taste was super salty. It meal was very disappointing and I will probably never go there again. read more

Stopped in by myself at a typically slow time of day for som Tom Yum chicken soup and chicken satay. The service I received was top notch! Extremely attentive waitstaff, not too forward but good at anticipating my needs. The satay was typical, 4 skewers with slightly spicy peanut sauce, very good. The Tom Yum Chicken soup was fantastic! A large bowl chocked full with chicken and fresh veggies with coconut milk and yummy spices. I ordered my soup medium and appreciated the sign warning that they have a HOT heat scale, typical for Thai food. I thought it was perfect - just enough to make my nose run, not hot enough to set my lips on fire or make me cry! I've been here a few times and need to be more of a regular! read more

4 years later, they have changed the format from a full service to a take out style, but same family owns it. They are awesome. The food is always dependable, large portions, many options, perfect price point. I am still a fan! read more

Family operated small sit-down restaurant with some of the best curry I have had. This is our go-to local Thai place. Family favorites are chicken satay, panang curry, tom kha, massaman curry, lard na, and ginger stir fry. They are heavy handed with the hot pepper so be sure to ask for an adjustment to your preference. read more

I love trying hole in the wall places, and this was definitely somewhere I have been wanting to try for a while. The service was fast, I went at an off time and it was not busy at all. It was around 2pm. I got the fried tofu for an appetizer and the panang curry for my meal. It was fabulous, although I can handle a little bit of spiciness so I decided to go with medium spice for the panang curry but I will definitely be getting mild next time. The flavors were perfect but I was sweating by the time I was done eating. One of my favorite things to eat at a thai place is pad thai and I will definitely be trying that next time I am there. This place is like a fast food thai food place when you walk it, and the environment is very casual but it is located in a great spot. It is in downtown Wheaton and there are plenty of things to do in that area. I was able to go walk in the park across the street for the restaurant. read more

Really uninspiring. The spring rolls were soggy. The crab rangoon had too much onion in the filling. The pad thai was bland. I thought the prices were too high for this quality of food. We're still looking for good thai food in the west burbs. read more
