It's always a good sign when a curry cafe has Nihari on the menu, as not everywhere offers this slow cooked dish. I try to be a traditionalist wherever possible though so, having arrived late afternoon, I wasn't going to have what is considered to be a Breakfast / Morning curry. I'll head over next time for the 11:30 opening to try the Nihari - gives me another excuse :-) Today I went for a dish that has become a staple in Pakistani food culture, Haleem. Adapted hundreds of years ago from the original Harisah recipes which were first documented in the Middle East sometime between the year 900 and 1000, Haleem is now prepared and enjoyed in Pakistani family homes and restaurants all over the world. At just a fiver (currently) for Haleem and a hot, buttered Naan, this medium spiced dish is not only very tasty, but is also superb value. Today I had Beef Haleem. It was delicious. The dish is prepared with Beef, Wheat, Barley and Lentils (plus spices) and it is slow cooked to such an extent that the beef completely blends into the other ingredients so the dish becomes a thick sauce "curry". Tearing off a corner of Naan and dipping it in, it tasted fantastic. The Marhaba Kitchen is a proper curry cafe and the owner / chef could not have made me any more welcome. Next visit - Nihari time! :-)

Prices, as noted in other reviews, are very low... something on the order of £5 for a heaping bowl of rice and chicken. The food was delicious- I was quite hungry and it was gone in minutes. It filled me up completely and I was very satisfied. Embarrassing moment when we found out they are cash only... but they let us duck out to a very near cash machine and come back. Thanks! I'll be back for sure to try some of the other items on the menu.

The food was wonderful, and such great value! He told me that I should choose what I thought was best, and by the time I got to the front of the line they would be out of it, and they would apologize, and they would suggest something else wonderful. He was right, that is exactly what happened, I and got a fabulous meal. Friendly staff, great food. A bit hard to find (behind the Mosque on Potterrow, and then around the back of the Aroma Cafe), but well worth the search. Do not expect starched white table cloths, but the staff is super friendly and we loved it. We will certainly be back the next time we are in Edinburgh.

Chopped pieces of red chicken tikka were enveloped in a creamy tomato sauce and mixed with chopped peppers, creating a tantalizingly sweet, savory, tangy, spicy, milky curry. In addition to the famous CTM, I also tried the Palak Paneer, a flavorful but greasy pureed spinach curry with cubes of paneer; and the Shish Tandoori Mixed Platter, a sizzling iron plate of onions, tandoori chicken, chicken tikka, lamb tikka, lamb seekh kebab, and a prawn, each of which was marinated with yogurt and spices before being cooked in a tandoori oven. The entree came with sides of saffron rice, nan bread, a mild house curry sauce, and a salad of pickled red cabbage, red onions, cucumber, and tomato. Rana's was my first choice because I'd heard good things from a colleague and my boyfriend had recently enjoyed food ordered from there. Rana's was fresh and fast. We headed over to order and waited a short time before our food was ready. I had the Rana's garlic korma, which was a delicious creamy, spicy dish; still with the mildness of a traditional korma, but with a lovely, punchy garlic kick. The result was delicious! The garlic naan was scrumptious too, as was the chicken pakora, and accompanying dips. Thinking back, the beautifully tender chicken pakora was my favourite and I recommend ordering several portions to share if there's a group, because our portion was gone in mere minutes. That's not to say that it was a teeny tiny portion; it was just SO good that we couldn't help but devour it. You know you've made a good foodie choice when there's not a word said, rather just eating, tearing, dipping, sharing. And clean plates afterwards, of course. So, it's safe to say that food from Spice Garden was a resounding success, and being so convenient for me, I'll definitely choose them again when I'm set on having a takeaway night.

Great decor and ambiance. The service was efficient and pleasant. And then there was the food! The menu was so extensive that we had a hard time deciding what to order. We finally narrowed it down and tried a couple of new dishes and a couple of the old standards. The serving dishes were placed on wee holders with candles to keep the food warm. This may be something that is common here in the UK, but I have not seen it done in the US. Great touch. Every dish was heaven and was complemented by the onion naan. I highly recommend that you give this restaurant a try. Although they do take-out, experience dining there at least once. It's lovely.
