Having lived right across the street from Green Gates for close to a year, it was about time I sampled their food. After all, when Tam Cowan reviewed it for his Daily Record foodie piece, (he approved!), my dad took it upon himself to call me gleefully. - 'Have you eaten there?' I hadn't. No better excuse for an Indian take-away than that! So, I had Green Gates last night. Living just across the street, we ordered ahead and went over to pick up the food. Although, I'd walked by countless times, I'd never really stopped to have a proper look. It's beautiful, it really is. Ornate and regal and mysterious, and green, of course! As you walk up the steps you feel like you're heading for Indian food in an illustrious old house, It's certainly eye-catching and makes for a more interesting Queen Street! The inside, wow! That illustrious old house is in there, alive and beating. With a vintage Yamaha in the corner, huge shabby lampshades and rustic wooden furniture; it's the full shilling. - Stylistic and cosey in a slightly thrown-together way but not to the extent that it's mismatched and chaotic. The simple and minimalist approach makes for an understated, inviting feel. - Just the right amount of quirk! This is definitely somewhere I want to have dinner. Food-wise, you can get a cracking take-away deal. - 2 set meals for £15.50. This includes 2 poppadoms with spiced onions and pakora (£1.75 extra for chicken pakora), any 2 curries plus rice and naan bread. We got two set meals meaning we had four different curries between us and also chose to sample the chicken pakora and peshwari naan. The pakora was delicious. - So light and tasty. The chicken was my favourite. - It was so tender. For curries, we chose vegetable korma, chicken tikka masala, chicken pardesi and lamb roganjosh. I'm a real korma fan but we all agreed that, in comparison to the others, the korma fell flat. It was just on the watery side and the veggies didn't help. I think if I was going to try a veggie dish again I'd go for one of the dishes from their traditional Indian vegetarian section. The other curry I tried was the pardesi and this was so delicious with spinach, pan fried onions and mushroom in a rich garlic sauce. I'm not a spice-fiend in the least so, for me, this was just the right amount of spice and it was bursting with flavour. FINALLY, oh my lordy, I've saved the best for last. If I could rate the peshwari naan alone, the star count would be through the roof. Mmmmm. It was almost a fight for the last bit. You know sometimes you get a peshwari and it's kinda sort-of like all the yummy flavours are on top and the rest is just a little bit...meh? None of that here. - All the goodness is inside and it's so juicy and YUM and....woah, did we really finish it that fast? I think I'll pop in here on occasion...just for a peshwari naan! The peshwari naan is the show-stealer. GET IT AND GET IT NOW. But, also, I'd bet that dinner here would be pretty damn good.

Aloo Chana

First restaurant we visit with my brother in Scotland. I was extremely dissatisfied. The only reason we came here is because it was one of the few vegan options available . This was my first time having Indian food and I wasn't familiar with any of the dishes on their menu. When I asked about the vegan options the waiter pointed to two dishes which weren't in English and had no description of what was in them. I asked him what they were and he replies with the name of the dishes which didn't really help. He then leaves and comes back and I try to ask again what they include but he didn't give me a clear answer. He then goes back and sends another waiter and at this point I was ready to just get whatever just so my brother could get his food so I went with the aloo chana. I only took a few bites. I was so upset about the first waiter being rude I couldn't even enjoy my food after. I've been vegan over 5 years and I totally understand when people aren't familiar with vegan food but this place advertises itself as a vegan place! If you don't want people asking questions about vegan food then at least have a menu for them with descriptions of what the dishes are! Definitely would not recommend.

I had no idea that Stirling had such great Indian restaurants. This one is terrific and the people who run it are really warm and wonderful.

I had family over round about that time in the evening that bellies start to rumble. With no food…read morein the fridge and no firm dinner plans, we thought it would be nice to order food to takeaway from Rana's Spice Garden which, coincidentally, is just round the corner from my flat. Rana's was my first choice because I'd heard good things from a colleague and my boyfriend had recently enjoyed food ordered from there. Rana's was fresh and fast. We headed over to order and waited a short time before our food was ready. I had the Rana's garlic korma, which was a delicious creamy, spicy dish; still with the mildness of a traditional korma, but with a lovely, punchy garlic kick. The result was delicious! The garlic naan was scrumptious too, as was the chicken pakora, and accompanying dips. Thinking back, the beautifully tender chicken pakora was my favourite and I recommend ordering several portions to share if there's a group, because our portion was gone in mere minutes. That's not to say that it was a teeny tiny portion; it was just SO good that we couldn't help but devour it. You know you've made a good foodie choice when there's not a word said, rather just eating, tearing, dipping, sharing. And clean plates afterwards, of course. So, it's safe to say that food from Spice Garden was a resounding success, and being so convenient for me, I'll definitely choose them again when I'm set on having a takeaway night.

Great decor and ambiance. The service was efficient and pleasant. And then there was the food! The menu was so extensive that we had a hard time deciding what to order. We finally narrowed it down and tried a couple of new dishes and a couple of the old standards. The serving dishes were placed on wee holders with candles to keep the food warm. This may be something that is common here in the UK, but I have not seen it done in the US. Great touch. Every dish was heaven and was complemented by the onion naan. I highly recommend that you give this restaurant a try. Although they do take-out, experience dining there at least once. It's lovely.

Stirling restaurants are surprisingly busy at half nine on a Saturday night. And Indian Cottage is…read moreno exception! But the speed with which the waiters cleared the table and had us seated was exceptional! We'd searched for a place to eat to no avail when my friends suggested Indian Cottage. The staff were very welcoming and friendly and we were happy to wait the short time until a table was free. The restaurant has a fresh yet traditional feel to it, and it seemed very clean. White tablecloths adorn the table and decorative napkins were folded impeccably! We went for a starter to share which was a platter of tandoori chicken, lamb kebab and an assortment of sauces. The chicken was impressively tender and fresh and went perfect with the accompanying sauces. For main, I went for chicken korma (always!) with rice and a peshwari naan. Delicous! The curries came in ornate gold bowls with large serving spoons which was a nice decorative touch. The portions were generous and it was reasonably good value with the starter platter, three curries, two portions of rice, a peshwari naan and a bottle of red wine for just under £70! One of my favourite kormas in Stirling so far. I'd definitely consider visiting the other two of the Mr Singh's restaurants in Stirling. Worth a visit, curry lovers!

I walk past Nawab every day that I leave my house. Twice. Once again on my way home. The restaurant…read moreis of a huge size, with glamorous interior and yet is always empty. I was intrigued. So, I walk past the front of the restaurant on my way home, and then again after walking through an alley, walk past the back of the restaurant and my flat is straight up ahead. So essentially, dependent which direction I'm coming from, I'll walk past both the front and rear over a period of seconds. Passing the back means passing the kitchen entrance, and sometimes the door is open. When it is, delightful smells fill the air. That was my main reason for wanting to try Nawab. I can't speak for dining in, since I was in a takeaway mood but my impression of picking up food didn't have me desperate to come back for more. The lady who served me was polite and friendly but, because the restaurant is so big, when it's empty, it really feels it. During my visit there wasn't a soul in and the restaurant felt lifeless and lacking atmosphere. The curry was alright, the korma a safe, classic, creamy affair. I don't like to mention competing businesses in reviews, but I was disappointed with just one basic korma on the menu, when there's a whole part of the menu dedicated to korma in a curry house just minutes away. Their signature garlic chilli korma is a thing of delight. Comparisons aside, I was left underwhelmed. I've often walked past at night to see staff sitting in the area you wait for orders. And in the back of the restaurant during the day I've seen an older lady asleep in front of a laptop or an older man amidst newspapers and empty glasses. The back of the restaurant oddly seems like an extension of the family home. These things won't strike people as particularly professional and perhaps that's part of the problem. Nawab wasn't bad, just decidedly average. Sometimes trying somewhere new does no more than reaffirm your love for an old favourite, and sadly that's what happened here.
