Stirling restaurants are surprisingly busy at half nine on a Saturday night. And Indian Cottage is…read moreno exception! But the speed with which the waiters cleared the table and had us seated was exceptional! We'd searched for a place to eat to no avail when my friends suggested Indian Cottage. The staff were very welcoming and friendly and we were happy to wait the short time until a table was free. The restaurant has a fresh yet traditional feel to it, and it seemed very clean. White tablecloths adorn the table and decorative napkins were folded impeccably! We went for a starter to share which was a platter of tandoori chicken, lamb kebab and an assortment of sauces. The chicken was impressively tender and fresh and went perfect with the accompanying sauces. For main, I went for chicken korma (always!) with rice and a peshwari naan. Delicous! The curries came in ornate gold bowls with large serving spoons which was a nice decorative touch. The portions were generous and it was reasonably good value with the starter platter, three curries, two portions of rice, a peshwari naan and a bottle of red wine for just under £70! One of my favourite kormas in Stirling so far. I'd definitely consider visiting the other two of the Mr Singh's restaurants in Stirling. Worth a visit, curry lovers!

So, I walk past the front of the restaurant on my way home, and then again after walking through an alley, walk past the back of the restaurant and my flat is straight up ahead. So essentially, dependent which direction I'm coming from, I'll walk past both the front and rear over a period of seconds. Passing the back means passing the kitchen entrance, and sometimes the door is open. When it is, delightful smells fill the air. That was my main reason for wanting to try Nawab. I can't speak for dining in, since I was in a takeaway mood but my impression of picking up food didn't have me desperate to come back for more. The lady who served me was polite and friendly but, because the restaurant is so big, when it's empty, it really feels it. During my visit there wasn't a soul in and the restaurant felt lifeless and lacking atmosphere. The curry was alright, the korma a safe, classic, creamy affair. I don't like to mention competing businesses in reviews, but I was disappointed with just one basic korma on the menu, when there's a whole part of the menu dedicated to korma in a curry house just minutes away. Their signature garlic chilli korma is a thing of delight. Comparisons aside, I was left underwhelmed. I've often walked past at night to see staff sitting in the area you wait for orders. And in the back of the restaurant during the day I've seen an older lady asleep in front of a laptop or an older man amidst newspapers and empty glasses. The back of the restaurant oddly seems like an extension of the family home. These things won't strike people as particularly professional and perhaps that's part of the problem. Nawab wasn't bad, just decidedly average. Sometimes trying somewhere new does no more than reaffirm your love for an old favourite, and sadly that's what happened here.

Well this has to be the best curry cafe I've yet found in Edinburgh / Scotland…read more As with all such establishments, the decor is functional - you come here for the authenticity of the food. It's always a good sign when a curry cafe has Nihari on the menu, as not everywhere offers this slow cooked dish. I try to be a traditionalist wherever possible though so, having arrived late afternoon, I wasn't going to have what is considered to be a Breakfast / Morning curry. I'll head over next time for the 11:30 opening to try the Nihari - gives me another excuse :-) Today I went for a dish that has become a staple in Pakistani food culture, Haleem. Adapted hundreds of years ago from the original Harisah recipes which were first documented in the Middle East sometime between the year 900 and 1000, Haleem is now prepared and enjoyed in Pakistani family homes and restaurants all over the world. At just a fiver (currently) for Haleem and a hot, buttered Naan, this medium spiced dish is not only very tasty, but is also superb value. Today I had Beef Haleem. It was delicious. The dish is prepared with Beef, Wheat, Barley and Lentils (plus spices) and it is slow cooked to such an extent that the beef completely blends into the other ingredients so the dish becomes a thick sauce "curry". Tearing off a corner of Naan and dipping it in, it tasted fantastic. The Marhaba Kitchen is a proper curry cafe and the owner / chef could not have made me any more welcome. Next visit - Nihari time! :-)
