Short version: crazy good korma, try the sir Walter Scott lamb, and if you leave room for dessert then they'll fill a citrus with sorbet for you. Longer version: my date and I were having trouble finding a place that would seat us without reservations in St Andrew's Square in a Friday night (hour long waits everywhere), and we finally just went to opentable to look for anything nearby. That might have happened to you. That might be the sort of situation that leads you to read something like this. We've done Dishoom. It was good. It's not an everyday place, but Zest is. It was empty when we walked in, which is something we usually find worrisome. Looks like it is being run by a family, and each of them takes special pride in every dish, every plate, and certainly both of their guests. Get the pickles. They're excellent to start with. Get the sir Walter Scott lamb. It's not something you've have, most likely, but it's what you're going to replace you takeaway tikka masala with starting the day after you try it. Get the chicken Korma. Get the korma because you deserve to give yourself something nice and rich and golden. Get it because you have something you always get and maybe trying something new is better than waiting in a queue for an hour one the square. Also, they will fill a lemon with sorbet for you. That's really considerate, don't you think? Here, I've taken a picture and attached it to the review. Look, if you're local, you've probably been everywhere else. Give it a shot. These are nice people who make good food. If you're a tourist, do the haggis the first night, then try this on the second night because you hadn't planned for what you would eat before hitting the pubs. Finally, they have vegetarian and celiac options. See, good people making good food.

I love the idea of Zest, take some of the East's finest flavours and combine them with old Scottish Favourites. The restaurant itself is a decent size, you only really feel cramped when it fills up (which seems to be alot). Last time I was here I had the Salmon Tikka, which was made with freshly caught fish from that day. To say I was blown away is an understatement, the flavours explode in your mouth. Staff made sure I had what I needed and prices overall were ok. Don't eat breakfast and go at lunchtime and get the group special. You'll be there for hours.

I came here in mid February, shortly after the restuarant had had its makeover under new ownership. The interior feels light, spacious and the creamy decor helps to give a nice, relaxed atmosphere. It tries to give a fine dining impression, but the spindly metal chairs and tables kind of let this look down. The waiters are pleasant, and the service is about what you would expect in any restaurant. The food is by far this place's key feature. The menu has a good range of authentic Indian dishes with plenty of meat and vegetarian starters and main courses to choose from. Further, it tries to incorporate local history with its Indian cuisine. For example, I had the Sir Walter Scott curry which was lamb in a really rich, tasty mustard sauce. I'm not sure what the link between this dish and the author is precisely, but you can see what they're trying to do. Zest is also reasonably priced, making it a great option for lunch of dinner if you're in the area.

Fantastic curry and the staff were super friendly!! We were starving in Edinburgh and suddenly Zest caught our sight, so we went in. The staff greeted us with warm welcome and let us sit in the window area, which surprised us, but it was perfect. The curry was absolutely a delicacy.

Wonderful meal. Service was pleasantly attentive. We ordered too much - the servings are generous.

Well this has to be the best curry cafe I've yet found in Edinburgh / Scotland…read more As with all such establishments, the decor is functional - you come here for the authenticity of the food. It's always a good sign when a curry cafe has Nihari on the menu, as not everywhere offers this slow cooked dish. I try to be a traditionalist wherever possible though so, having arrived late afternoon, I wasn't going to have what is considered to be a Breakfast / Morning curry. I'll head over next time for the 11:30 opening to try the Nihari - gives me another excuse :-) Today I went for a dish that has become a staple in Pakistani food culture, Haleem. Adapted hundreds of years ago from the original Harisah recipes which were first documented in the Middle East sometime between the year 900 and 1000, Haleem is now prepared and enjoyed in Pakistani family homes and restaurants all over the world. At just a fiver (currently) for Haleem and a hot, buttered Naan, this medium spiced dish is not only very tasty, but is also superb value. Today I had Beef Haleem. It was delicious. The dish is prepared with Beef, Wheat, Barley and Lentils (plus spices) and it is slow cooked to such an extent that the beef completely blends into the other ingredients so the dish becomes a thick sauce "curry". Tearing off a corner of Naan and dipping it in, it tasted fantastic. The Marhaba Kitchen is a proper curry cafe and the owner / chef could not have made me any more welcome. Next visit - Nihari time! :-)

There is some seating outside but plenty more within. Food came quickly, service was friendly. Prices, as noted in other reviews, are very low... something on the order of £5 for a heaping bowl of rice and chicken. The food was delicious- I was quite hungry and it was gone in minutes. It filled me up completely and I was very satisfied. Embarrassing moment when we found out they are cash only... but they let us duck out to a very near cash machine and come back. Thanks! I'll be back for sure to try some of the other items on the menu.

Taken by my University of Edinburgh student son to this, his favourite place to eat in Edinburgh…read more He compares all other food options to The Mosque Kitchen, and they all fall short. The food was wonderful, and such great value! He told me that I should choose what I thought was best, and by the time I got to the front of the line they would be out of it, and they would apologize, and they would suggest something else wonderful. He was right, that is exactly what happened, I and got a fabulous meal. Friendly staff, great food. A bit hard to find (behind the Mosque on Potterrow, and then around the back of the Aroma Cafe), but well worth the search. Do not expect starched white table cloths, but the staff is super friendly and we loved it. We will certainly be back the next time we are in Edinburgh.
