Karaikudi
K G.

Absolutely fantastic! I love Southern Indian cuisine, but it's somewhat difficult to find restaurants that specialize in it where we live in the states. We were super excited to happen upon Tanjore in Edinburgh and we were lucky we arrived when we did; it seems like you need a reservation after 5:30 or so on a weekend. Not only was the food incredible, there were quite a few dishes I hadn't seen before. Every dish we tried was delicious, but the karaikudi was out of this world. I also highly recommend the parotta.

Mysore Masala Dosa. It's pretty close to what I get back home in India.

Everything about this place makes me want to go back for another meal. I am originally from South India and found this restaurant during my recent trip to Edinburgh and immediately went in after looking at their menu. I had the Mysore Masala Dosa which is, hands down, the best I've had outside of India. I also had filter coffee with my meal which was pretty good as well. The best way to judge if I really liked an Indian restaurant abroad is asking myself if I would visit this place if it were in India. I think with Tanjore the answer to that is a resounding yes.

Curry = good. Pancake = good. Curry + pancake = great. South Indian cuisine is becoming more popular these days and with good reason, as it always feels a bit lighter than the usual curry stodgefest. I think curry is much improved by the additional tastes and textures of dosas, idlis and other doughy delights, especially in combination with the various dips and sauces that always accompany them. Check out my photo to see how huge the dosa is. Everything is fairly cheap so it's easy to try a number of small things, and if you can't decide what to have for your main, just about everything comes in a mini starter size. I would be happy just dipping pieces of the light pancake in all the delicious dips and sauces, but when you also have some tasty curry inside, it's the gift that keeps on giving. If you're bored of the usual curry standards then this place is for you.

Been wanting to come here since the place opened and finally got organised this weekend. The restaurant looked a bit tightly packed with tables, but once seated there seemed to be plenty of space. Modern Asian decorations with some interesting touches here and there. Nothing too out there and it did manage to conjure up a comfortable feeling to the place. The service was great from the minute we got in through to getting the bill. The menu is extensive with some really interesting bits and bobs I haven't seen elsewhere. The waiter discussed the specials with us and the orders were in. Papadam and dips were a highlight nothing too exciting about the dips but the pickle was different to any others I have tried. It seemed like it was homemade rather than from a jar. Thumbs up from me. We ordered 4 Papadams and it looked more like 6 or 7 we were given. :D The starters were met with mixed options the chicken and squid tanjores were excellent as were the accompanying salads. The Rasa Vadai seemed a little strange we hadn't had Vadai before but it didn't leave an experience that we wanted to repeat in a hurry. The Rasam it was severed in was lovely though. Just in case you haven't tried it, Rasam is Indian tomato soup and well worth a try. The mains were mixed and I forget what my dinner companions ordered but everything was excellent. Both veggies and carnivores alike loved there choices. I went for the special of the day which was rice with a mango/tamarind fish curry with Idli on the side. Lidls were new to me and were steamed rice and lentil cakes. They didn't really taste of much but they did go well with the curry. The curry had lots of fish but the tamarind was overpowering everything leaving the dish tasting a little bitter. It was really nice just not great. I will be heading back to try some more of the menu as I think the special didn't really work for me, but my companions loved their curries. If the fish curry had been a little more mango and a little less tamarind this would be a 5 star review, as all the other dishes were amazing.

Review Highlights - Tanjore

Our curries went great with saffron rice and parotta, a South Indian bread I haven't had anywhere else.

I ordered a wee bit of carry out from Kama Sutra for a Friday night at home celebration. Overall,…read morethe quality of the food was quite good. The items purchased included KADAI PANEER, LAMB KORMA, and FISH PAKORA. As usual, I will itemise my reviews for each of these foods. In terms of food quality, the most important aspect of a restaurant review, the food was truly SUMPTUOUS, RICH, and TENDER-MEATED. The kadai paneer, which contained paneer with stewed vegetables, was adequately seasoned, flavourful, and succulent. I will say, the quantity of paneer included was MINIMAL, but that is how these restaurants SCAM you: they give you a hefty portion of the cheap stuff, but are overly restrained when it comes to the proteinous goodness. As for the lamb korma, it was RICH. Served in a thique spicy and sweet coconut sauce as yellow as the yolk of a quail's egg, with tender morsels of a lamb's meat, this dish was tantalising. And, finally, the fish pakora. It was flavourful and spiced with a reasonable level of flakiness, such that it was moist but not soggy on the interior and crisp on the exterior. It was served with a delicious yoghurt sauce and a tiny rubbish bag filled with 'salad'. Overall, the food warrants four (4) stars. I have deducted one (1) star due to the LACK OF CARBOHYDRATE in this meal. Little did we know, the saucy dishes are not served with rice or naan. Fortunately, this was carry out and I had some mediocre Co-op naans on hand to seep up the many unctions. So, beware: you must order RICE or NAAN or another INSTRUMENT with which to consume your food, unless you prefer to simply drink the thique and rich juices as you would a cup of tea. Because this food was carried out and consumed in the comfort of my home, I do not factor service, ambience, or other in-restaurant factors into this review. That includes the supposed sex theme of the restaurant. Perhaps one day I will venture in for the full experience.

**March 2024: Weeknight Evening Visit**…read more Look the service, ambiance and atmosphere was wonderful; however this was the worst meal I had in Scotland. Perhaps it was my fault in selecting this item, but I've never had Tikki Masala so sweet that I couldn't enjoy. The gravy had a burnt caramel taste and when I asked the server if it was suppose to taste that way I was informed that it's creamy and sweet. I probably should have sent it back, but instead tried to scrap off all the gravy and just eat the meat and side of Naan that I ordered. I think Brits may enjoy an entree with a sweet tooth, but moving forward I may order butter chicken as to not replicate this scenario. It's a shame, because I love Indian cuisine too :(

Ordered the Lamb Kharahi (£17) - marinated Scottish lamb with a variety of spices. Asked for spicy and they did deliver in that regard. All the lamb chunks were covered in the curry and spices, which is easily sopped up by the Chili Naan (£4). Drink list is substantial as well, as their Gin and Tonic (£6) was fantastic. Server here was very accommodating, as they kept up with the waters and were quick with the food. Would certainly come back for another sit-down meal if given the chance.

I found this place as rated one of the better Indian restaurants in Edinburgh that does vegan options. I don't get it. We arrived for dinner on a Monday, and their vegan menu online was not shown on the dine-in menu, so I asked the server about this, and they told me what could be made vegan -- at least they were familiar with the concept. We got a vegan Balti and vegan Rogan Josh (each about £10.50), plus some tandoor roti (£3.50 each) and papadams and dipping sauce (another ~£4). The Rogan Josh was the oiliest Indian dish I've ever tried had in my life. The dish was swimming in oil. Beyond that, there wasn't much complexity in flavour beyond high saltiness. The Balti had the same saltiness / lack of depth issue, but at least wasn't as oily. We were quite disappointed in the lack of flavour depth in both dishes, especially compared to the Indian food you can get in the UK in general. What's more, the portion sizes were not especially big, so we really relied on the roti to be full. Very disappointing Indian food overall. We would definitely not return.
