I feel like I walked into an episode of Portlandia. This small shop in Davis Square is unreal. So many things I will never need, but that I walk in and kind of want. This is the internal dialogue I experienced: You say there's a notebook made out of a weird children's book? Yes! Oh it's $50. I guess I'll walk out. Wait, it may be worth it. Who knows when I'll ever get a chance to buy something this unique. Also, it's made by a local artist. I can't just walk out now. Fine, I'll get it. Magpie has lots of cool locally made stuff. I recently went shopping for a gift for someone. I visited both D Squared and Magpie. I do like D Squared but I found that most of the kitschy stuff that they sold was made in China. Seems like everything I picked up was from there. While they did sell some locally made stuff it was nothing compared to what Magpie had. For a much smaller store Magpie has a great collection of prints, clothing and odd nic-nacs. They definitely place more of an effort in curating a locally sourced inventory. Worth checking out. read more

Cute, cute stuff at a range of prices. I got a deer plate for $20, a tshirt with a dinosaur for the same and know where to come to get my mom a simple necklace that looks like twigs. Prices are reasonable for handmade local crafts. Nice Somerville-y artsy fun spot. read more

When I first went inside Magpie, I thought it was really cute. They had these cute necklaces, but they didn't have the one I wanted in stock, so they ordered it for me (they were very nice about it). When it came, however, I was charged a lot more than I was expecting (like $20 more than I had seen the others priced). I was too embarrassed to say anything, and figured that maybe since they had to order it for me, it was more expensive. When I went on Etsy and looked up the seller, I found that Magpie totally ripped me off. Cute store, nice people, but they price gouge. Shop with one eye open. I'll be sticking with Etsy. read more

What a fabulous little store! I was tempted to buy much, much more, but I limited myself to two smaller items: a sticker that says "Reading is Sexy", and a locally made Taza chocolate bar. This place is like a permanent art fair. The have all sorts of cool handmade stuff made by local artists. The stuffed animals are super cute and would make a great gift. It is hard for me to be critical of this place. Certainly the prices can be higher than a big box store, but I found a few cool gift items for under 10 bucks. Magpie is the first place I go to buy gifts for the difficult people to shop for in my life. read more

I love supporting local designers and artisans, having been one myself, but this place leaves something to be desired. An unfortunate amount of the merchandise just seems like its trying too hard. Even so, I like to come in here every now and then just to see what new merch has hit their tables. I like to see shops like this one that support local artists and crafters. Magpie is expensive though and a bit small. I enjoy browsing here and sometimes buy a few pins or cards, but i haven't paid the high prices for anything else. A lot of the stuff i could make myself fairly easily. Magpie is awesome! I love adorable, weird little knick-knacks and they definitely fit the bill. GREAT place to look for a little gift if you have birthdays coming up. The art is beautiful, a lot of very cool photographs and wall-hangings. Very interesting jewelry too. Magpie is a little gem in Davis Sq. It's a great place to look for local art/crafts, lots of stuff in there that you can also find on Etsy. I like this place a lot, but it is quite expensive - but I guess you're paying for the sheer awesomeness of the stuff that's in there being unique and hand crafted. Davis Squared across the street is somewhat similar, but tends to run a little cheaper, I think. read more

This store is full of cool shit that you don't need but really, really want especially if you are a twenty-something who wants college-esque nostalgia without the actual college bit. I found Magpie more customer friendly than its across the street counterpart, Davis Squared. I was actually greeted by the salesperson, and they had music playing...funky, offbeat music fitting for the store. I am a big fan of cute t-shirts, and this store has a whole bunch. My boyfriend came with me the second time I went, and he actually found a few things to look at while I was wandering around. They have some really cute and colorful messenger bags and laptop bags, funky journals and books, and amazingly different jewelry made by local artists. The only negative thing about the store is that it is very small and can get a little crowded if you go in during the weekend. Also, I know people have mentioned the prices being high, but the prices are no different than other similar stores. read more

Magpie was already one of my favorite stores in the greater Boston area, and then it really went above and beyond. I bought a headband here that I loved, but unfortunately after wearing it only twice the headband portion broke. I'd never had anything from this store break before, and I wasn't sure if it would be worth the time trying to get it fixed, especially since I no longer had the receipt. But I dropped in, and the very helpful and friendly girl at the counter took my info and took a picture of the headband. Within a few days I had an email with the maker's info, as well as an offer for a refund. I was thoroughly impressed at their willingness to help, and I will definitely be back! Another great purchase here: a Joan-from-Mad-Men sticker for my laptop. How awesome is that? Also, their jewelry is adorable, and while I've only purchased a few pieces they have held up to my dropping them and stepping on them. :) read more

A lot of great handmade gifts from local artists. Really nice selection of jewelry. I also like their funky notebooks made out of old library books and many items related to Davis Square. However, the BEST thing about this store is the UNBELIEVABLE CARD SELECTION!!! The cards are mostly letter press, and are well made and designed. (You might think that a card is just a card, but people are always asking me where I found the ones I gave them from Magpie.) For every occasion, funny, arty, sometimes hipster-y and always different from what you'd find anywhere else. Though most of the cards are fun, this is also one of the only places I've found that has beautiful sympathy cards. I get almost all my cards at this store. Really nice and helpful staff too. read more

I pretty much agree with the people who feel this store is pretty overrated. While the stuff they have is a little cute I could make a lot of it myself. I wouldn't pay the asking price on anything they had and left empty handed. Maybe it was an off day for inventory but nothing really jumped out at me as something I could not live without. read more

I LOVE THIS SHOP!!! WOW! They seem to go out of their way to support local artists and arisans, and they really great ones too! The staff is informed and knows all the info about their products, the local artisans/jewlers/potters/ect.. I am often looking for things with cats on them yet love silver over gold, even though im only in there every few months, they remember, and when I see some hand made cat neckless but only in gold, they will show me silver options by the same arisanian jewler in silver that may be studs or rings. This place really goes above and beyone. Their tiny 300plus square feet is packed, it kind of reminds me of the skateboard shop down the street that is also amazing as the emplyee there turned me onot this place, they are both five star shops, and I reserve that 5th start for that amazing business that is amazing in every way possiable from the sevice, they way they treat customers as if they are friends, their knowledge, there huge selection of products, and the high quality of products at a reasonable price. Bottome line, this is the BEST gift shop i the Boston and Greater Boston area, no need to look any further. They got it all, and if for somereason they don't, then they will point you in the direction of where to find such an item. I hope this shop stays here and open fo a long long time. I love it, I love shopping for myself, and I know my partner goes here as well to get me gifts. I've shopped Magpie quite a few times, love their t-shirts especially...... but...... when you get sneering, unfriendly, sour-puss attitude (yes I am talking to you, girl -behind- the- counter- today- who couldn't- be- less- helpful about your t-shirts and my enquiries about when new styles might be coming in ) then, yes I should've forgotten about getting the store credit for my friend (whose t-shirt I was trying to exchange) gotten the cash, and told her to go directly across the street to Davis Squared -- where they are friendly and helpful. Sheesh, I love indie stores...want to support them and frequent them and BUY STUFF from them so I find it sooooo depressing when I encounter better customer service from somewhere like the Gap! read more
