I heart Magpie. I never leave empty-handed...in fact I usually want everything in the store. As you know from reading the other reviews, Magpie stocks handmade goods-- jewelry, t-shirts, bags, cards, and lots of other exciting, creative trinkets. The things they choose to carry are really high quality, and their prices are definitely reasonable. It's a perfect place to buy a unique and thoughtful gift. The folks that run/staff Magpie are great people, and they are really dedicated to what they do--there is such a chill happy vibe every time I go there. My husband and I sell some t-shirts here, and we've had exceptionally friendly dealings with them. This is so worth a visit! It is so close to the train stop, you have no excuse for not popping in. In addition to local artists, there is also a selection of some of the latest, greatest craft happenings from around the country. Perfect for when you want a unique gift, not that you probably wouldn't enjoy looking for yourself - there are only so many cute things I can justify buying for myself! Particularly large sections of t-shirts, tote bags of all sorts, and cards/stationery. Friendly and helpful staff, too! I love their jewelry, and the awesome t-shirts. I never have a problem finding knitting-related/knitting humor gifts here, which always make me happy! I highly recommend this store if you're looking for a handmade gift or home item, or feel like if you walk into one more chain store that you might kill yourself. I saw an ad for Magpie with all of the press about this weekend's Bizarre Bazaar. I wanted to hit up Kickass Cupcakes and a few other stores in Davis Square so I decided to hit them up. I love knitting, and of course was sucked into buying the little skull/knitting needles shirt that they also sell on their site. The store is very cute and very crowded with lots of arbitrary knick knacks, patches, jewelry, art, t-shirts etc. Everything was pretty unique and interesting and looked to be of good quality. The service wasn't too helpful until I made it evident I wanted to purchase something. I don't know if this is because of all the pressure of the upcoming Bazaar, but I was a little cranky that in a store that small that neither my husband or I (the only patrons in the store) were not acknowledged until we went to the counter to make our purchases. It's pricey, but everything there is handmade, crafty, and not mass produced. I think this is a great store for holiday and birthday present shopping for those tough picks on your gift recipient list. read more

When I need a birthday gift I usually come here. Well for that matter when I want some nice / funky jewelry for myself I come here too. I have some great necklaces and earrings I've gotten here. What I love about the place is that it's local - made by local artists. I feel like I'm getting something one of a kind (especially the jewelry). It's nice not to see the necklace or earrings you are wearing on 200 other people as you walk around. It's a bit small and cramped and there's a lot to see in here - it's packed with stuff, but that's cool with me. read more

One of the stationary/gift stores that I have ever been to. My wife was super impressed. They carry way more unique stuff than what you would find at typical stores that carry things like the boring little hands for your fingers and the unicorn farting jellybeans... none of that garbage. You can tell that every item in this store is picked out meticulously from all over and they have tons of cool stuff that I promise you have never seen before. read more

This is one of my favorite shops in Davis Square. It's aesthetic is quintessentially "New Somerville", and features an awesome array of locally- and handmade goods. The real draw for me, though is the wide selection of quirky greeting cards. Magpie has become the exclusive supplier of block pressed and handmade sweet/punny/clever/thank you/sympathy/birthday/catchall occasion cards. And as a result, choosy mom and skeptical sister have both gone out of their way to comment on how much they love the cards their receive! (Score!) For when a card is not enough, there are a lot of other great small gifts - locally-made chocolate, interesting jewelry, beautiful block-printed posters, a suprising range of things to open bottles of beer, and my most recent impulse-buy: chai-spiced goat's milk caramels. I know, how could I not?! The missing star on this review relates to price - this isn't your local Family Dollar, but I don't mind occasionally paying a little more to support local business and producers! read more

Don't know how much I can add to this, I just HAD to write a review so I could add it to my where to shop list! BUT, if you need to buy a gift for ANYONE this is the place! They have a great selection of screen printed t-shirts that line the middle of the store, mostly printed on american appearl and from cool designers from all over the globe. ALSO their jewelry is SUPER one off, so if you need something special that people will remember head here! Not to mention they carry those cool notebook made from old books and about a million other things that could keep you wandering around the store for hours! I keep finding myself wandering into Magpie on nice sunny weekend afternoons when I'm out for a stroll around Davis. I love their t-shirts - yesterday I bought 2 (one is of a squirrel playing the drums and the other says "I love brainy boys" but is written with periodic element symbols lol). They have some very pretty jewelry made by local artists, I haven't bought any yet, but soon. I think one of my favorite things about this store are the little terrariums and gardening supplies they sell (the Matchstick garden is a great little gift for yourself or someone you know with a burgeoning green thumb). They also have some very funny and interesting cards for all different occasions. Even if you don't plan on buying anything here, it's definitely worth checking out - but most likely you will end up buying something. (: read more

I don't think I should be allowed to go in here because it makes me want to buy everything. It's a crafty, crafty place with all sorts of goodies. They have awesome funky one of a kind jewelry pieces, lots of t-shirts, and funky home decorative accessories. If nothing else, it can give you some good craft project ideas. The price point is really decent, and I managed to not buy the cute silver octopus necklace somehow. So adorable. The service is nice and not overly pushy. I travel to Davis Square for the sole purpose of browsing this store. My limited edition Queen Bee vinyl tote came from here. The bulk of gifts I give to others comes from here: cool buttons, jewelry, creatively packaged herb seeds, screenprinted tees, Taza chocolate -- I prefer the 60% bar, nifty cards, cute cases, etc. Another thing I really, really like about Magpie is that they carry locally-produced crafts, many of which are unique to particular tastes. I must say I had some high hopes for Magpie after reading about them in a breif blurb in "stuff @ night". Their selection is pretty decent and they have some cool stuff, nothing there makes my "must have" list. A lot of the stuff I did like cost more green than I would have been willing to drop. $8.00 for a wooden cell phone charm seems a bit nutty. Also it seems to me that if given the right supplies and time, I could make a good deal of the stuff they have there. You could find DIY guides for over half their inventory on instructables. When I went there, the woman behind the counter was really nice, she was quirky and accommodating. On a completely different note; while I was browsing I noticed that among the wallets they sell some of the duct tape verity. Despite being a little more refined in their construction I think selling something that any grade school kid could make is pretty bad form, but that's my only super serious issue with the place. Bottom line: It's a nifty place and the stuff is pretty nice for non crafters and people without any time to make fancy things for themselves but it's far to pricey. I feel as though if the prices were lower my opinion of the place would sky rocket up. read more

Agreed with others here who say that though this place has nice stuff made by local folks, the inventory doesn't seem to change often and the prices are a little high. The upside of this is that when thinking of a gift for somebody I can simply recall what Magpie had in stock last time I was there and be somewhat assured that it will still be there. Kind of handy until you start repeating yourself in your gift-giving and everybody rolls their eyes when you gift the same set of circuit board coasters for the 4th time. The more I shop at Magpie, the more I like it. I think the move down the street to the center of Davis Square has done wonders for the store. I often find that little indie retailers like this one jack up the prices or pad the shelves with superfluous junk. Everything in this store is tastefully picked out, and there always seems to be something new on display. The art prints are an especially good deal, I found many prints for exactly the same price they retail for online (minus shipping, of course!). There is also a wonderful card selection, including a lot of non-gendered or gay and lesbian friendly valentines and wedding cards. read more

We were just walking by this store, but were intrigued at the signage and overall feel of the store. We had a great time looking at all the goodies this store had to offer. We walked out with some pins and patches, but they had a great assortment of cards, prints, jewelry, shirts, and all kinds of things! There are way too many things in here that I would like to own. I am sucker for cards, and they've got what I consider to be the best and quirkiest selection in Davis: letterpress, silkscreen, cutesy, hip, often hilarious, whatever occasion you need. Ever since I saw their awesome refab journals made from old, classic book covers, I've been trying to think of someone to gift one of those to. Nevermind that handwritten journals are so 1998. They're too awesome not to buy. Actually, that's kind of how I feel about most things in Magpie. Funky earrings, messenger bags, recycled stuff, local artisans, thoughtful jewelry, prints & postcards... Gifts for everyone. Especially for that friend who everybody calls a hipster but swears she really isn't, or for your brother who can never have enough cute silkscreened indie t-shirts, or for your mom who appreciates anything handmade. Magpie is wonderful! I've found some very unique stuff here. The cards are amazing, for one. But there's so much else it's hard to know where to start. Strange and fantastic scrap books made out of upcycled books ranging from children's stories to home repair manuals and cook books. Cool bags. Fun jewelry and other accessories. It's a tiny place but if you look carefully enough you're sure to find something lovely and one-of-a-kind. read more

Great little gift shop. I've never been compelled to buy anything from the similar store across the street but this little place packs a punch for such a small space. There are a great variety of things and it's perfect for gifts (gifts for yourself as well). This is my, "It's a beautiful day I'm going to take a walk to Davis"/"I'm bored, everyone is at the movies" store. I love this store. I wish there were more versions of Magpie closer to me in Somerville. I live on Winter Hill and there is a complete dearth of interesting shops unrelated to falafel, tacos, tacos, donuts, pizza, and more pizza. Really miss interesting, non-Gap/J.Crew/etc. shops and window shopping. Magpie is really well curated with interesting work by local/New England artisans and they're the only other shop outside of Paper Source that I know of that stocks Rifle Paper Co. stationery. They also have a wonderful array of cards and it's my go-to place for cards when I'm not in downtown Boston (then it's Papyrus or Paper Source). Fantastic little shop and although a little pricey, you're getting wonderful products. This is not mass-produced garbage, so complaining about the price is sort of dumb. I can't go here too often or I'd be broke, but at least all of my friends would have a steady supply of clever cards! read more

Love their jewelery: Magpie has the best jewelery, in my opinion. I don't like anything too femmy, and they have a huge selection of gold and silver geometric earrings and necklaces that are beautiful and edgy. Awesome customer service: One pair of earrings I got here as a birthday gift broke recently, and when I went to the store to see if they could do anything for me, they were WONDERFUL. They emailed the artist in SF and requested a new pair be made, and within a couple weeks they emailed me to come pick them up. I am a very happy camper. I poked into Magpie for the first time after reading about it here on Yelp and deciding it'd be a good place to find holiday gifts for some of my young, crafty friends. And indeed, I found two great gifts and keep thinking that I should go back for more -- beautiful handmade jewelry, etched glass candleholders, fun t-shirts, adorable little stuffed toys, and so much more. Some of the stuff was indeed pricey -- $25 for a single votive candleholder, for example -- but you can tell that a lot of time and effort went into these crafts, and they're of great quality. I'm kinda dying to go back for a cute vinyl clutch bag emblazoned with Pac-Man. Don't you dare buy it before me. read more

Do you love shopping at stores that make you smile, "ooo" "ahhh" and "awwwwwwwwww!" Then Magpie is where you should perch for everything craft-friendly. This little shop may be small in size but every corner sings with bags, jewelry, house decor, t-shirts, knick knacks ranging in price. I enjoyed perusing the store when I got off of work and ended up buying two picture frames by AModernHome, computer-motherboard-themed coasters, and an adorable pear pin. I'm actually relieved that the store closes at 6 because if it was open until 7pm, God knows I'd be in there everyday loading up on totes, vintage-mod-retro inspired necklaces and nifty T's. read more

Magpie is THE store for one-of-a-kind gifts, doo-dads and everything else you never thought you would need. Prices range from the super affordable (I picked up a pair of earrings for $6!) to moderately expensive. But most items are priced on the lower side as compared to similar stores in the area. The location is a bit out of Davis Square but easy to find, tucked down Highland Ave in a small row of stores. EDITED TO ADD (3/3/07): Magpie moved to a larger space on Highland and is now closer the the square and you can shop withouth knocking things from the shelves! Check it out! read more

Magpie is a cute little crafty store that, as I understand it, sells things made by local crafters/artisans. It's almost like a walk-in etsy. They have a rather eclectic variety of things of various appeal to an assortment of people. I'm partial to the knitted squid I saw in there recently. The thing i like about the place is that they don't carry junk. Everything they have seems to be of good quality and made by someone with some level of mastery in their given art.
