We really enjoyed Magic Grill as first time customers. Having grown up with authentic Chinese food in Flushing NY I look for restaurants that can do similar in Jersey. For $15.50 at dinner time you receive a soup (choice of wonton, hot and sour or vegetable). Then they bring out rice dumplings which are exactly what the name of implies. I think they are okay, although I see a lot of my fellow yelpers love them. Then is my favorite bar, the all you can eat noodle bar. Choose your protein, veggie, noodle, add your sauce and then give to the chefs to do their magic. You can top it off with red chili sauce, peanuts or seasame seeds. Now I will admit I did expect the Szcheuan and Hunan sauces to be spicy. I didn't find them to be so. I did add the red chili sauce that they keep at the table and that gave me the spice level I wanted. Note for you not spicy lover, this may be in your favor. We used to have Mongolian bbq quite regularly before moving to NJ, but hadn't really seen it here. Found this place on Yelp which was fortunately close to home. At around $13 for dinner, the price is very reasonable. I ate 2 fairly full bowls. as well as the complimentary soup. Flavors for the most part were tasty, although the meat wasn't that great (it was cut much too thick, and as a result was not very flavorful). So don't come here if you want to load up on meat... the veggies and noodles here seem to be better options. They give dumplings with the dinner, which did seem to be quite popular, but I didn't touch them, as they were full of rice. There is a parking lot, as well as some street parking. The restaurant was quite busy on a weekday night, and actually seemed to be full of regulars. read more

My friend grew up around here and so she took me to this place! I love Mongolian BBQ, so I was quick to say yes. We got there and were instantly tended to. They asked about drinks and what soup we wanted. The soup came out quickly and with a really great mushroom, rice dumpling. It was in a cute tin container and was served with a very tasty sauce. The dumpling and sauce combination was GREAT, I could have eaten a full meal of them. We then went to the meat/veggie bar and loaded up our own bowls with whatever we wanted. The veggies looked very fresh and there were a variety of sauces to add to your bowl! The best part, you get to watch them cook it in a very traditional style. There are also toppings available to top off your noodles, my favorite were the peanuts! I would totally come back here! Mongo! This place is great! All you can eat noodles. You can put in what ever sauce, protein, and vegis in the bowl, and they quickly cook it for you. Only four stars instead of five because it is a little dirty, but get over it, it's delicious. read more

This place is pretty much exactly what it's supposed to be. It's a real hole in the wall Mongolian noodle bar, with a bathroom that is the actual literal definition of a hole in the wall. With that being said, if you ladle out enough of the sauces provided (I always do the Chef's BBQ and the Mongolian Sauce with a good healing of garlic on top; hint: don't use just three ladles like they suggest!) on top of your noodles, then you can get some good flavor going. Another thing to note is that their dumplings, or, more accurately, their dumpling sauce, is delicious! I always end up getting an order to split with whoever I'm with. The cashier woman is super kind, though the men who work on the grill itself are usually pretty gruff. Overall, it's nothing to go crazy for but still an enjoyable spot in town and a good place to mix it up a little. read more

THIS PLACE IS CHEAP! And, for some, that's all you need to know! I came here for an unofficial Yelp event and it was definitely a solid spot and if you live in the area and looking for a ton of food at some low, low prices, I mean you already dine at Magic Grill. You start off with dumplings and I went with the wonton soup. The wontons in the soup were stale (boo) and the dumplings were filled with RICE! No fillings, no cabbage, no meat, just rice. They were good when soaked in the sauce, but I mean, it was pretty basic. But really, you don't come here for that jazz. You come for your share of Mongolian BBQ. Head to the assembly line to create. All the meat was frozen (so no freshness here) and the seafood was at an additional price. The veggies were plentiful to choose from and good and then you move on to the various sauces. You hand it over, watch them cook on the huge wok, add some hot spices and you're off. After one bowl I was full (although I went for seconds) and I mean for the $15 it was solid. I see why many do the $7 take out - fill up you bowl and take it home or come for the $7 or so lunch special. Clearly this is a whole in the wall family run business. Service was fine if you're ok with very low key and it's a bit of a dive, but again, it's CHEAP! Overall, a solid place to fill your belly. read more

You have to go to Magic Grill. It's a must. When i was a kid we went to JP Lee's Mongolian BBQ in Milburn and i was heartbroken when it closed. When i discovered Magic Grill I was elated. The food is incredible and you create your own bowl. The rice dumplings are addicting. The soup is the best wonton soup I've had. It's a casual atmosphere with both dine in and takeout available, with dine in being All-You-Can-Eat. The service can be on the slower side sometimes but since you do the majority yourself it's okay. They will ask what kind of soup and how many dumplings you want as well as drinks and then you are free to go to the buffet line and put together your bowl with the raw ingredients. Then you bring it to the counter with the grill and they cook it in front of you. The uniqueness of toppings after cooking i love: chili oil, peanuts and sesame seeds. It's also very reasonably priced for the amount of food you're getting. If you get it to go it's definitely enough to share between two people if you just purchase an extra soup and can agree in the ingredients in the bowl. read more

Probably my favorite spot to eat in New Jersey. My family has been coming here for decades, and it hasn't changed a bit! What it lacks in ambiance it makes up for in affordable good food and pleasant service. I love the sticky rice dumpling that come with the meals - I could eat just a plate of them for dinner alone! This place is almost as weird as the town.. Food is pretty good, but it's definitely not the best quality, and that's why its cheap Walked in, didn't know you take the raw food and bring it to the chef, where these guys do a game of thrones khaleesi dothraki dance around a circular flat top grill while sauteeing the crap out of your food. But it came out pretty good! Surprisingly people come far away for this! Lol They really need to renovate the place, pretty dirty and run down All in all, I respect the culture and the cuisine. Came here for an early dinner due to the Alex Clark show at Cranford Dramatic Club Center. The place is about a 10-minute walk from Cranford Station. When I entered, there were two different parties there that were about to leave. I chose a seat. The host asked me what soup I want and if I want dumplings. I saw that the food is similar to hibachi, which is nothing different. The grill used tap water to water down the sauce. After getting my first bowl, the host gave me wonton soup and dumplings. The dumplings are basically glutinous rice wrapped in dumpling skin. The options are limited, with meats, vegetables, and sauce, where the seafood is extra that is limited to one serving. When I saw that grill, I saw a bunch of overcooked food going to waste. I feel that I can get my worth better at any Flaming Grill buffet. read more

I'm shocked that this restaurant has a 4 star rating on yelp. The value is decent for the price (around $13 for all you can eat dinner) but the food is mediocre. Despite this, there were several tables of regulars who were greeted warmly by the waitresses. The Good: -my egg drop soup (included in the all you can eat dinner) was good, and my sister and dad said the Wonton Soup was good -customizable - you can add whatever veggies, meats, and sauces you want -the mushroom dumpling was decent. Essentially a fried ball of sticky rice in a wonton wrapper that included a dipping sauce. Can't really go wrong with fried carbs. The Bad: -food barely had any flavor despite adding 6 ladles of barbecue and soy sauce (instead of the suggested 3). Your food only cooks for ~60 seconds on the grill so it doesn't have time to marinate -although the two waitresses were friendly and quick to refill waters, the cooks were rude to my family -low variety of food. You can really only make a noodle stir fry - there isn't even the option of rice. -truly a hole in the wall with vinyl booths, which I don't mind when the food makes up for the atmosphere. Went here for dinner on a Saturday night. Didn't know it was like $12+ per person. It was kind of pricey compared to other buffets where they offer more stuff. Just note that this is a noodle only spot. The only protein they offer is chicken, pork and beef. I would suggest getting the noodles and drenching it in the sauce first then put stuff on it. They offer you one soup per person and some dim sum looking dumplings. But it's not dumplings at all. It's actually some form of Asian sticky rice. Tried Magic Grill/ Mongolian Grill for the first time today. As well as my first time having a Mongolian Dish. Great price for an extensive portion of food. The setup is basic: Pick a soup: few varieties to pick from on a day to day. Grab a plate. Fill it with your choice of veggies and noodles. Add your choice of chicken, steak, pork, tofu, or super combo with all. Choice of 8 different sauces. " I loved the Mongolian Soy Sauce" Optional: Shrimp or Scallops for an additional charge. If you'd like have a side of dumplings with brown rice. The Soda machines could use new syrup and less water. The soda was really flat and heavily over watered. The staff is very traditional and friendly. Great vibe. The restaurant is outdated and could use some renovation but for a little Mom & Pop spot it gets the job done just right. Magic Grill is a Solid 3.5 out of 5 !!!! If you're in the Garwood area and need to grab a quick bite I'd suggest you look into trying Magic Grill and experience it for yourself. I figuratively cried when JP Lee's Mongolian BBQ in Millburn, New Jersey, closed down a few years back. Hell, I may have really cried. It was one of the only reasons I ever ventured to that part of Essex county - the best round grill joint in North Jersey. It was my foodie friend and I's 'Go-To' spot for a fast, inexpensive, satisfying meal. In its absence, there was a void unfulfilled in me for a long time, but a recent discovery has changed all this.. and that would be Magic Grill in Garwood. Granted, I'm trekking into Union county for eats, but it's worth it. You get you choice of soup (wonton, hot and sour, egg drop, etc.) and sweet rice dumplings served with this tangy sweet dipping sauce that all patrons there rave about. You don't get a default bowl of rice, but they'll give one to you if you ask. There's a selection of chicken, beef, pork, and tofu that goes along with the assortment of veggies. No shrimp option, but I'm content that the place exists period, so the seafood/shellfish lover in me overlooks this. It's super family friendly (there are always lots of parents with their kids) and the hostesses are always nice. Good prices PLUS there are dum dum lollipops to grab when you pay your bill. My only criticism is that the grill area gets a little messy - specifically, the food catcher/runners on the sides of the round grill. However, the comeback positive is that there is a clear plastic divider between the dining tables and the grill area, and good ventilation, so you don't leave with your clothes smelling like your meal. Have been here numerous times because the food is tasty and it's a quick in an out place. Went this time and was completely grossed out. They make the dumplings in one of the booths in the restaurant. The woman got up handled money answered the phone and then sat back down (did not wash hands or put on gloves) and continued to make dumplings. Then later she got up and started to pick her nose behind the register. Was soo grossed out by this. Will not return. Oh my gosh I love this place so much!! I had been looking all over for a Mongolian BBQ place like this one for years and stumbled upon it on Google and was dying to come, even though i lived 2 hrs away. Once I finally happened to be nearby I made a point to stop by, and to this day I relive the magic of this meal. It's actually a good thing that I don't live closer because I would seriously eat here everyday if I could! I've lived down the street for the past 4 years and have been coming here since I moved here. It's a true hole in the wall but its OUR hole in the wall. Fill up your bowl with as much as you want, they'll throw it on the grill, and you can eat in or take it to go. Also included is an order of sticky rice dumplings with an amazing dipping sauce (I think it's ginger but I can't remember, they told me once when I asked). The owners/waitresses (not sure who actually owns the place among the ladies that are usually there) are super friendly and know all the regulars, myself included. Lunch is like $8, dinner is a few dollars more. How can you possibly go wrong here? If you live anywhere near here and are craving some low key Mongolian BBQ, this is the spot. read more

Everyone STOP the presses! A new headline has just come in: TRAGEDY HAS STRUCK THE GRILL! The daily lunch buffet is no more! Now the price for one bowl is $7 with an additional charge of $1.50 per bowl extra. I was too distraught to ask if the dinner buffet was still around, but all I know is that the lunchtime feast is no more. Time to forget pacing myself with small manageable bowls. I shall apply all the engineering I have learned in the past 5 years to build BBQ bowls the likes of which they have never seen. The Magic Grill still gets 5 stars in my book even though they may have "raised" their prices because $7 for a bowl of heaven is just too hard to beat. I went to Magic Grill with my mom as a kid, and just brought my daughter here. Place has not changed a bit. Still cheap, good food, with friendly service, and lovely waitresses who haven't aged a day. It's fun to create your own meal each time, and I never get tired of the sticky rice and mushroom dumplings. The soups are good too, but I try not to eat much of that, as I want room to gorge myself on all the carbs of rice/dumplings/noodles/etc. The only "beef" I have with Magic Grill is regarding the beef. It's simply not a good quality, and once it is cooked on the giant grill, it becomes extremely well done, a.k.a. dark, tough and chewy. My beef is with the beef. Yep. That's all. The end . read more

This is just like its name 'magic'. what a lovely place this is,great for family ,friends get together. Its ambience is very decent,clean n friendly. when we entered a very lovely lady first greet us then took our coats and jackets ,hanged it very well which was so impressive. After that we got best table coz we were 10 n up. We were so relaxed n comfortable there . They started our meal with delicious dumpling n soup .I ordered vegetable soup which was good but when we ate dumplings with sauce (best sauce I EVER HAD) ...just wow simply loved it most importantly everyone liked it . The best part of the restaurant is its kinda buffet, you can choose your favorite choice of meat or combinations by yourself . According to its price I would say its cheap , affordable and most important delicious. I used to a Mongolian Grill in New Brunswick until they closed down and haven't had any since. I just happen to pass by one day and saw this place and I was really looking forward to eating here. Took the family here tonight for dinner. The facility is ok and need some updating but that's not why I'm here. I had the chef special sauce and I was blown away. So much better than the place I used to go to. They also give you some kind of rice dumpling and that was just amazing. My two year old daughter enjoyed that. The ladies that work here is super friendly. I HD a great experience and will definitely will be coming back soon. Some tips are...
