Amazing View! Hotel sits up top so you have a beautiful view below of the harbor/water - so nice in the morning to see all the ships/boats out on the water. Was a little skeptical... but ended up being a GREAT stay! The rooms could use a little upgrading or love, but it wasn't bad. We had a mini fridge which was nice..... and great TV reception. Bed was comfortable... so yeah, rooms were fine. Restaurant - staff were so much fun! And the food was delicious! We pretty much closed the place down every night we were there. We brought our own games so we sat, played, & drank the night away! Power does go out occasionally.... but not for long.. plus they have a generator. this was not specific to the hotel... I believe other places experience the same situation occasionally. Would I go back? Sure. read more

This place is a complete shithole. The local girl in the front desk has the personality of a dead jellyfish. She could not answer any questions pertaining to things to do on the island. She was completely clueless. The rooms smell funky, the railing on the villa is about to break off where you will fall 30ft to your death if you lean on it at all. The view is the only thing going for it but I'd rather camp on the side of the road up the street. The power and internet cut off continuously. So did the water at one point. $499 a night? The restaurant Sol was "sol-less" and lacked any creativity or taste. $50 for a bland grouper? The obese Restaurant manager Robin gave us attitude when we complained about the food taking forever... Maybe she was in back eating it? Anyone that raves about this place is not well traveled and has no fucking clue what they are talking about. read more

I had a fabulous experience at the Mafolie hotel! It was very island vibes. Very open and beachy. The BEST view on the island. Our room was huge and well air conditioned. There are a lot of stairs if you are booked at the bottom of the hotel, which was fine for us, but depending on your physical abilities you may want to request a room closer to the street/lobby. The pool was super nice. There was almost never anybody there so it felt very private. And again, the view was unbeatable. When I stayed, the bar at the pool was under construction, but the owner said eventually it will be an honor system bar, which is a great idea for drinks at the pool. The restaurant didn't open until 5 pm for bartender made cocktails. I wrote a restaurant review on the restaurant page, but to summarize, great food and service. Free breakfast was actually delicious. I didn't know what to expect staying at the Mafolie, but if I were to visit the island again, I would DEFINITELY stay here again. read more

I really enjoyed my hotel stay here! It is one of the more reasonably priced hotels on the island and was exactly what I needed as a solo traveler. The air conditioning worked great and the bed was comfy. Unfortunately the wifi didn't quite reach my room, but that didn't have a huge impact on my stay. The best part of course is the epic view. Wow! I would definitely stay here again read more

Hotel is high in the mountains with amazing views about 15 to 20 min drive from the airport. $15/pp via Mike's Taxi. Check in was great, staff is friendly and helpful. Restaurant is still closed so went up the hill, fun walk at night to Sibs for dinner, which was good. Continental breakfast in their restaurant was good but limited. Room Queen bed, nice view. Bed was very comfortable and room was clean. For a night or two recommended as hotel, room & bathroom etc. are very outdated. Lots of steps so beware if you can't climb stairs especially with luggage. Pool looked nice and clean. read more

One of my favorite little gems that I've gone to for years! Great views and the food is good especially the hamburgers!

Under construction but still an enjoyable stay for the price. The view was great, and the bed was very comfortable. Both the hotel and restaurant appear to be a work in progress, with construction materials like tiling stored in the hallway near our room. Front desk hours are limited (8 AM-8 PM), which can be inconvenient if you need assistance outside those times. The location is somewhat out of the way, so we needed to take a cab to get everywhere. Cabs aren't cheap. Breakfast is included, which is a nice perk, but it doesn't start until 8 AM--later than we preferred since we like to be on the beach by that time. Overall, a good value with potential, but be prepared for some inconveniences while renovations are ongoing. read more

On our recent trip to St. John, we opted to spend our first night on St. Thomas. The Mafolie Hotel was a wonderful start to our trip. The hotel doesn't offer a shuttle from the airport, and we didn't have a rental car, so we had to wait a few about 15 minutes for a taxi ride, but not a big deal. The Mafolie is located high on the hillside with a spectacular view of Charlotte Amalie. Our flight got in early, and our room was almost ready, so we enjoyed complimentary beverages by the poolside, overlooking the harbor. Beautiful. We checked in on time. Our room was not fancy, but it was nicely appointed and very clean, and the bed was perfectly comfortable. The acclaimed Mafolie restaurant was closed the night we were there (Tuesdays), but the helpful staff member (sorry, didn't write down her name!) recommended Sib's, a short walk up the hill, which was delightful. (Note: if you go to Sib's in the evening, take a flashlight or headlamp for the walk back. We did, and we were glad!) After dinner, we enjoyed the view from the pool deck which is SPECTACULAR. We mapped constellations, as church bells chimed in Charlotte Amalie, frogs croaked, and roosters crowed. After a lovely night's sleep, we enjoyed breakfast (included with the room) at the Mafolie Restaurant. Coffee and orange juice were served right away. My wife had the avocado toast, and I had an omelet. Both were beautifully presented and delicious. Ella, our hostess at the restaurant, was jovial and added so much to our morning experience. Irish, front desk, arranged for a taxi to take us to the Red Hook ferry at 11 am, which was check out time--we wanted to enjoy every minute of our stay! One small issue: the room we reserved (a Junior King Suite) was more spectacular than the room we stayed in. I got in touch with the Mafolie, they apologized and refunded us the difference. We look forward to staying there on our next trip! read more

We stayed here before and after a bare boating trip in the BVI. Rooms are comfortable, plenty of AC, booked the Villa room at the end of our stay, a perfect way to regroup after sailing. The restaurant serves a wonderful dinner, cocktails at Happy Hour, complimentary breakfast all with a gorgeous view of the bay and Charlotte Amalie. Only downside is that it's high in the hills so not convenient if you want to step outside to take a stroll to get an iced coffee. But worth it if you prefer a smaller hotel with some character versus the larger corporate ones. read more

Gorgeous hotel with a breathtaking room!!!!! Every room is unique and the landscape is gorgeous. The views are unmatched! The hotel has their own restaurant and bar, that includes free breakfast! The drinks at the bar were great and I loved the bartenders/servers. There's a pool that overlooks that same beautiful view and some rooms even have balconies. Mine had one and I couldn't stay off it it. Since the hotel is on the hill/mountain the stairs up and down around the whole property can be a doozy. Be aware too that the later in the evening it gets, the less taxi drivers want to drive all the way up there. read more

I couldn't get enough of this beautiful view! We stayed at the Mafolie for 5 nights and had a lovely time. The hotel had a local feel compared to a typical chain hotel. We enjoyed the dinner at the restaurant a few times. The drinks were all amazing and the bartenders were great. The view was incredible throughout the day and the hotel is centrally located on the island so a taxi just about anywhere was $8-$10 per person. All of the workers were incredibly kind and accommodating. The pool was never super busy and was open for the majority of the day. The king room itself had a shared balcony and was average but the higher rooms with solo balconies would be worth the upgrade. I definitely recommend this hotel - or at least a night here for dinner - for the views alone! read more

These folks overbooked and made no effort to help us get a room elsewhere. We showed up. They said sorry and no more rooms available. The receptionist said she was closing up for the night and then locked the door. She didn't help us get a cab to somewhere else. This hotel is not on a street that is walkable. It has no sidewalk and is on a steep hill. We had luggage and it was 8pm at night. Horrible. Do not stay here. I just can't believe our reservation was not honored. read more

The hotel has spectacular views and is such a cute little boutique hotel. The free breakfast was awesome and dinner was just as good. Our bartender Jay was awesome and very accommodating. The manager was extremely helpful but the front desk clerk was extremely rude and miserable! She needs to go to some etiquette classes and learn some customer service skills! She ignored me when I said good morning and appeared like I was bothering her by speaking to her! I also don't appreciate her talking under her breath as I walked away after checking out! Rude and disrespectful maybe take some pointers from your very professional manager!!!! FYI I was at this hotel August 6-7, 2022 so beware of the miserable front desk lady!!! read more

Oh Mafolie hotel and restaurant, you really encourage and justify, my laziness in not wanting to use my kitchen on a daily basis. The hubby and I have a new home right across the street from this restaurant and every night, delicious smells come out of here to beg us to spend more money there, who are we to argue? If you've never been here before, reservations are a must. We've been here on week nights and weekends and it's never slow for dinner. Ok, so here's the secret if you don't have a reservation, there are 2 seats at the end of the bar, right next to the railing that we always snag. But if we're there, when you visit, we'll probably be in them. Parking consists of all of 3 spots. You may have guessed it but they are also never empty during dinner service. Everyone parks on the road, so as long as your car is half in the grass, you'll be ok. Just copy everyone else parked on the road or take a taxi. Paige, the bartender, always takes such great care of us. I think everything is faster at the bar with getting drinks, apps, and entrees. My hubby and I highly recommend the filet, we get it every time we go here, it's covered in a thick savory, beefy sauce that I want to bathe in, it tastes so good. Go with Paige's custom drinks, they've never disappointed us. The views will make all of your worries disappear. It's very romantic, and we've meet couples that have gotten engaged here and keep on returning for their anniversaries. This is a very cool spot and a great excuse to ditch the kids at home for some alone time! read more

Lovely hotel with great views. Elizabeth at the front desk is professional and sweet as can be. Steven (manages the restaurant) is a hard worker and has an attention to detail that rarely is found on the island. April (bartender) is probably one of the nicest people I have ever met. If you go for breakfast make sure to ask to be seated in Ella's section. The only reason to give this place 4 instead of 5 stars is that figuring out how to watch TV in the room is like Elon Musk trying to get to Mars. Three remotes, no instructions, etc. read more

Yet another fantastic meal at Mafolie hotel. We frequent this place because of the great view and Steven behind the bar does a great job of serving our dinner. The food is wonderful and I recommend the seafood linguini and a chicken Caesar salad. We even had a piece of key lime pie and raspberry cheesecake tonight. Try some of the local side dishes and bring your camera. The views are insane. Make reservations so that you are sure to get a seat. But if not, sit with Steven at the bar and say hello to Matt too. Eh. This moves above one star only because the view is spectacular. The food is average, at best, and the service is below par. Maybe we mistook the previous reviews for thinking that, 10 years after a previously good dining experience here, that the consistency had remained. This is clearly not the case, and instead of quality experience, you're left with hit or miss in every aspect of the evening meal. We ordered a shrimp cocktail and a salad to start, and while they were both adequate, neither stood out, and both had serious negative aspects (croutons on salad were too large to be bit sized, and not stale enough to crush into smaller pieces; shrimp cocktail was served with an odd seaweed salad on top of the sauce and shrimps, with a very unappetizing visual presentation). Our mains were no better, with both dishes served smothered by sauce that is not listed on the menu for either the fish or the steak. Nothing ruins an experience like protein drowned in unexpected slop. Not to mention whatever cut of meat they were trying to pass off for a ribeye steak. It was a pile of steak trimmings that may have only been held together by the grill marks. Our server was polite enough, but never once took our comments about the average food to mean that anything should be corrected, finished our meal by asking if we wanted a dessert from a menu that looked like it was printed in the 1990s and offering selections from your grocery store freezer. In no world does your vacation or trip to St. Thomas need a meal at Mafolie until the kitchen staff is entirely overhauled. read more

Beautiful scenery ... Liz our waitress was very good and accommodating. She also was very entertaining and funny!!! She enhanced our dinner experience with her great personality. The ribeye was charbroiled to perfection you could taste the fire and it was very tender and cooked perfectly. The coconut snapper was one of my favorites that I got to try and if ever back I would probably order it !!! The sweetness of the coconut sauce and the red snapper pairing was insanely good... The filet was deep fried perfectly with the "in sync" combo of crunchy but also soft and juicy inside. The Caribbean Rum lobster was good as well. I wouldn't order it again but it wasn't bad.. I really liked the mash potatoes and pickled purple cabbage slaw that came with the dish.. I did Hear from my stepdad that the conch soup was way too potato and buttery for his taste and no conch pieces to minimal to be found. Overall... the elegance of the dining experience and scenery was so beautiful . This restaurant is a must - see " go too " and I can only imagine how romantic it would be with a special loved one in this intimate setting oh what a perfect date restaurant!!!! read more

Here's a lengthy review on Mafolie Hotel. We are currently here and checking out in an hour. We had stayed here last week one night before we got on our 7-Day yacht excursion. The grounds are gorgeous, the hotel has been around for years and years. You can see the wear of the years with walls cracking. They do their best to keep the grounds looking somewhat decent. If you are not physically fit this will be a very difficult hotel for you because of all the steps. The views are spectacular, I think that's why people stay here. The pool bar is not open, at least the two times we've been here. If you leave your room you have to wear a mask, however we didn't have to wear a mask out by the pool. The first night we stayed in a suite room 109. The furniture had a sparse Caribbean feel, the bathroom was really really small. Because the hotel is built into the side of a mountain even inside your own room there will be steps. We had a king bed which was amazingly comfortable. We did notice that because the hotel is so old electrical plugs for our charging were not everywhere. The views from our balcony were spectacular and you can smoke on the balcony. We woke up kind of late our first morning and went and had breakfast at the hotel which was decent. Breakfast begins at 7:30 in the morning. Based on this first night's stay I would say this hotel is a 3 out of 5. Upon our return they moved our room even though they told me they would not when I first booked. We were then in room 117. Because this is an older Hotel no two rooms are alike. This one was very bizarre with a lot of wasted space. Had a long entryway and it was wide that probably took away from the size of the room. But it could be a retaining wall that they have to keep. The couch in this room is very dated, it looks like it's a style from 20 years ago (I would say the same for the couch and the first night's room as well). The lamps next to the couch and the bed did not have electrical plugs for charging. They had traditional electrical plugs on the walls, but you could see that this hotel was retrofitted for electricity because the electrical ran through pipes along the wall. This room had a slight odor to it that I couldn't quite place. Had a step up to the bed area and a step down into the bathroom, the bathroom was significantly larger than room 109. We had dinner at the hotel and it was an epic fail. The food we ordered we didn't like, that might have been our own fault because we ordered the jerk filet mignon and it was so spicy none of us could hardly palette it. But that's our fault because we didn't know jerk was spicy. We selected garlic bread for an appetizer and mine was over toasted to where the bread was just hard all the way through, we had two frozen cocktails and a mixed drink, a bottle of Fiji water, and the peanut butter pie for dessert. Our steaks were barely eaten. The bill came to $198, our bad. Just be aware if you eat here the tip is included. I found the service to be slow, what you expect on island time, and a lacking and attentiveness and graciousness. Now here comes the worst part, the bed was like sleeping on cardboard. On their reviews they claim they have a serta bed in every room. My first night in 109 the bed was delightful. This night it was absolutely horrible and I woke up so stiff. What I don't understand as well which I need to figure out is why we ended up with a room with a queen bed instead of a king, because that's what I thought I was paying for. Being exhausted from the last seven days we fell asleep at 8:30 p.m. and I woke up at 5:00 a.m. only to learn that they do not provide any refreshments in the refrigerators in your room and there is no coffee available until the restaurant opens at 7:30 a.m. No one works overnight in this hotel, there's an emergency number posted on the office door. So basically we are stuck here waiting for the restaurant to open so that we can have some liquid in our system after having been awake for two and a half hours. After this night stay I would rate this hotel a 2 out of 5 and never stay here again. Had I have had the second night's stay (a week later) experience the first night we were here I would have canceled this reservation and moved somewhere else. After breakfast update, last week when we were here they provided us a menu where we could select French toast, pancakes and some other things. It was a fairly good breakfast. Today it was a buffet which was not ready upon our arrival and it was really just half-assed. When asked why the difference in menu and they said the owners were trying something new out. To me like another cost saving. I would think that if this hotel continues operating in this manner it will ultimately fail. read more

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for our honeymoon this past July. Overall, we loved our stay considering the hotel was beautiful and very clean. The staff when we checked in were very helpful and friendly and I would love to say that we would recommend this hotel to others. However, on our last day there, my husband accidentally forgot to put on his wedding ring when we left our room that morning. Given we just got married and were very aware of our rings, we both remember him setting it prominently on the night stand. When we returned later that day, we noticed right away it was gone. Since we did not want to jump to conclusions right away, we literally tore the entire place apart including our suitcases, purses, and the car just to cover all the bases. We then tried going to the front desk and explaining the situation. The staff seemed very helpful and concerned and claimed they would look into it right away. My husband and I even asked if they knew who exactly cleaned our room and they said they did. However, we went on with the rest of our trip hoping for the best but eventually had to go home. The housekeeping manager kindly gave us updates right away, but when we got home and in the weeks after, we heard nothing despite many ignored emails and phone calls. We are very sad this happened to us given it was our honeymoon and we had barely been married a week when this happened. Although there is nothing we can do about it now, we want others to be aware so this doesn't happen to anyone else. read more

Visited this restaurant on our trip to St. Thomas after reading all the great reviews. I was excited and looking forward to the view and the food. Well, only one of those paid off. If this review was based solely on the view then it would be 5 stars but I have to be honest, the food here was a total BOMB! And not in a good way. We were seated immediately when we arrived, our server decided to take our orders without writing anything down. We ordered the Conch fritters, callaloo soup and Caesar salad as appetizers. The order of fritters arrived and after biting into it I noticed the batter was still wet in the middle......I mean totally uncooked in the middle. I decided to open up the rest of them thinking it might have been an anomaly with the first one, they were all undercooked. It was sent back, then the soup arrived and it was chowder instead of callaloo, that also got sent back. At this point, I was already thinking that we made a mistake coming to this restaurant. During all of this we ordered our main courses, the potfish with creole sauce and some fish fillet that they had on their dinner special menu. We waited at least an half hour for our main courses to arrive and when it did it wasn't worth the wait and hype at all!! The potfish didn't taste like it was their "speciality" dish, it tasted like mediocre fried fish (was NOT worth $30+), the other fish dish just tasted weird, the pineapple salsa concoction that topped the fish fillet wasn't good at all. The best part of the meal was the Caesar salad. Dessert was even worse, I ordered a pineapple upside down cake. The pineapple wasn't caramelized, it was still tough, the cake itself tasted like a bad combination of mystery ingredients. I really wanted to love this restaurant, but it just didn't work out that way. The service wasn't bad, everyone was friendly, and like I said the view is breathtaking, especially in the evening, but the food was extremely disappointing. I honestly don't see how it got high ratings. If you've had some REAL Island/Caribbean cooking you will agree that this place doesn't even come close. read more

Appalling and a total waste. The chef is a con artist, a fraud, a total FAKE. The staff are not a whole lot better. I ordered fish, and was served a chicken breast. When I told our server Kyle, he insisted it was DEFINITELY fish and then went to get a manager. The manager who showed up looked at the plate and agreed it did not resemble fish in the slightest. She even remarked that she doesn't even eat chicken herself so she understood my frustration. She went back to the kitchen and when we reappeared with the correct dish, she said "The chef said it was fish, it was just over cooked". I was bewildered. They genuinely believed he had served fish, when it was 110% chicken. I even cut it in front of the server and the manager but they chose to side with the chef who was adamant that it was fish - just over cooked. I'm not sure where he got his training from but i think it's a pretty big problem if you can't tell the difference between fish and chicken. Also, if the fish was over cooked, why would you even serve it? My husbands fish was actually over cooked so they clearly don't really care that much. I reiterated to the manager that it was without a doubt, chicken, and she just shrugged her shoulders and said the chef said it was fish. It was the most bewildering experience ever. There was no denying it was chicken. They bought us a round of drinks, if you can even call it that when I was drinking soda, and they brought a different wine and they were out of ginger ale so i had to have sprite. This was the most disappointing experience in St Thomas. The only staff member who exerted any sort of enthusiasm or hospital was the teenage buss boy. Kyle the server never came to check on us and was just really not happy to be there at all. Don't waste your time or money here. Your water glass will always empty. Your server (especially if it's Kyle) will disappear to take a nap for about 45 minutes and then they will try and pass chicken off as fish!!! The attached photos is of the "fish". read more

At night the lights on the bar set a great backdrop with the city lights behind. The service was amazing - everyone there was beyond friendly. Would be nice to impress someone special. It's also nice to bring a group or come alone. Everyone likes the serene view, and experiencing that will seriously tempt you to move to St Thomas. The food is very tasty (and affordably priced around $20 per meal in 2017), the menu changes often (chicken marsala and the seared ahi tuna were my favorite, but once in awhile they have rib night that is awesome), fresh catches - caught that day, and the people are the nicest. The bar area 'sometimes' has football or baseball when it's an important game; otherwise, it's still a lively atmosphere, but quiet enough to hear your date across the table. Kids are allowed too, but you usually don't see them. Breakfast there is open to the public and the omelettes, fruit, and hash browns are delicious (about $13 and includes juice and coffee). They have free high speed Internet in the restaurant, bar, and lounge area, and although the rooms didn't have internet during the hurricanes, I'll bet they do have now - double check that (email them) if you absolutely need it?? The rooms are spacious (some have living rooms), are very clean, and some have nice views while others are located in a romantic setting. There's a warm pool overlooking the view. There are free computer stations here and there for printing out boarding passes or catching up on some email (again - double check the stations have Internet as the hurricanes affected them). If the stations do not have Internet, just check with the hotel manager, and I'm sure he'll be happy to print whatever you email to him. It's owned and run by a guy named Adam Israel, and he, along with his friendly and professional employees, make you feel like you're family. I stayed at other hotels on St Thomas, but this is my favorite. It's centrally located and 5 minutes from Magen's Bay (the best beach on the island and one of the top 10 in the world), 5 minutes to downtown Charlotte Amalie and the market place, 8 minutes to cruise dock, and 10 minutes to airport. It's a very safe area, and everyone knows where Mafolie hotel is, so you won't have a problem getting a cab. While there are a ton of pros, there are no cons that I've seen, and I've been there a lot. read more
