I stumbled across The Farmer's Table last night on yelp, and perused through the breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. I was intrigued! So tonight, I took a trip to Blossburg, and was impressed by the restaurant's cleanliness, the friendly staff, and the atmosphere that I would describe as modern farm- chic. The food- fresh and delicious! There were several options on the menu....it was difficult to decide! I went with the almond, cranberry, grilled chicken salad with a balsamic vinaigrette- the dish that initially caught my eye. My guest ordered a ribeye steak and was impressed by its taste and overall quality! If you are passing through Blossburg, or simply wish to support a small business, please stop by The Farmer's Table and give it a taste!

Seriously though... speaking as someone who was a partner in two restaurants in NYC for 4 years, who does not claim to "know it all" but knows some tricks of the trade... I think they've got great potential and would like to share my thoughts with them. Saying they've "got potential" probably come across as smug, obnoxious, and ridiculous, especially because they've got like 4.6 stars here on Yelp! And that's mainly why I found myself here... Staying in Mansfield for the night, I looked up restaurants that were enroute to our hotel. Some of them had 3 or 3.5 stars and I said "no way." But 4.6 stars with as many reviews as The Farmer's Table has? Absolutely! The atmosphere is a little bit diner but cozy enough and has the farm as a theme. There are some cool design elements, like the steel ceiling, the tables... The bathroom was clean and well stocked, and that's a really good sign that the place is sanitary and organized. The waitress was really, really nice... and we loved that we were in this tiny little town and yet she had this really cool, funky image. Great fingernails! I'm jealous! A tip for her to make service even better... think about sequence of service. Think about the extras that the customer will want with the specific thing they ordered so that they won't have to bother you. If they order something with fries, definitely put ketchup on their table, and do it before the food is delivered. There were also a lot of empty tables with salt shakers, but it's had none. Some customers notice these little things and appreciate a server who anticipates their needs. On the other hand, maybe she was just really slammed busy before we got there. My wife and I waited like 2 minutes for her to take my order and she apologized profusely for having us wait so long for her. I was like, "am I in Manhattan or wut???" She was on point, generally easy to find when we needed her, she was never trying to hide from customers (a huge no-no) and very well-intentioned. Definitely a keeper. The food though... I was surprised we didn't like it very much being the reviews were so good. When I got the check to pay, I asked the server what their most beloved and popular dishes are. She said that ppl order a lot of the prime rib sandwich, and also the cat fish. Incidentally, I had ordered the prime rib sandwich, and my wife had the breaded cat fish. I was expecting a lot more meat on my sandwich, and the bun was just a regular burger bun, but it was ok. It came with 3 slices of pickle and cost $11.90. I was still hungry after that so I finished my wife's catfish 'cuz she gets full easily. I liked the catfish more, but neither of us thought it was anything special. What was special were the prices. The catfish included 2 sides, and it cost less than $14. Being from NYC, it was so refreshing to see pricing that reminded me of year 2000! A burger for $7.85 that's not Burger King? Incredible! But the cole slaw... ewww. I didn't hate it, but I kind of forced myself to eat it even though it had a strange flavor. The sweet potato fries were ok. Everything was basically O.K. I imagine that, if I lived there, I would go pretty regularly cuz it's probably the best thing the neighborhood has in a few square miles, and it's easier and more fun than cooking at home (if you're not a cook and you're busy at work). But I think that some improvement in the food could make the place more of a destination. And a destination could actually bring more business to the surrounding businesses! I can understand if the townspeople want very basic food there, but at least offer a few specials that are fancier, better ingredients, something that stands out and is memorable. I know I'm spoiled coming from NYC... a 4.6 star review in places like Manhattan are different than a 4.6 star review in a small town. But this place has some nice things about it. There is a Maple syrup room you can see into and all kinds of wooden carved bears everywhere you look. The service is good and the food is fine. They serve carved turkey dinners all year round so if you get a craving that's a great option. They also serve the Impossible Burger for the vegetarian members of the group. The gift shop is loaded with their homemade Maple treats including syrup of course. There is also a large playground area for the kids to get some of their energy out on. So if you're looking for a fun day trip Sprague's Maple Farm is a good choice.

The overall experience was underwhelming for the price (but that's understandable for the issues in the country atm). Because it was a special occasion and it happened to be friday, I treated myself to the fish fry (I usually avoid it since my husband hates the smell of seafood). It was an impressively sized piece of fish with a teensy cup of tartar sauce. It was then that I realized I hadn't asked if they used sweet or dill pickles in their sauce. I tasted it, it was sweet (ugh!), so I asked for some malt vinegar to try and substitute flavor. I really tried to eat and enjoy my meal, I used the vinegar, as much as I could squeeze out of the lemon and eventually a sprinkle of salt to give it some vibrancy. The problem was, without a good sauce, I couldn't get over how unpleasant the batter was and how flavorless the fish was (plus the inner layer of the batter was also unpleasant mushy). Eventually (about four bites in, the piece of fish is still larger than my plate), my husband remarks that there is no reason for me to force myself to choke down what I found truly disgusting. I relent and give the waitress my plate, explaining I just can't eat it and I don't have an appetite now for any replacement so I'll just wait for everyone else to finish. All of that wasn't even the main issue. After we get our check, I see a $11.Something charge I didnt understand. I ask for clarification by the older lady running checkout. It turns out it wasn't "$11" but a poorly written "4" that was the addon for my daughter's fries. (Wasn't aware that a $12 sandwich didn't come with fries for less than almost $5 but, I guess that's our bad for not checking the menu when the waitress asked if she wanted fries with it...fries that were just previously frozen blah things with no seasoning that my daughter didn't even eat, but again, that's a cost of going out I guess?) Finally, I gently bring up asking about some sort of discount off my $15+ meal as I could not eat the entree. I never asked for it to be comped, I opened with a suggestion of a discount because I had eaten the side of fruit and mashed potatoes. The lady acted as if I was insulting her and/or trying to score a free meal. She explained how it wasn't their fault if I didn't like the taste of their tartar sauce. I was confused and flabbergasted for a moment. Admittedly, I didn't point out how I had struggled to attempt to eat the fish despite the tartar sauce issue and still couldn't stomach it. I doubt it would have mattered, she likely would have said it was my fault because it wouldn't be the resturant's problem I physically couldn't choke down their nasty breading. I was so upset that my rare treat had turned out this way and put a rain cloud over the rest of my day in Cuba. Because I have neurological problems and issues with confrontation, I couldn't think clearly or argue after essentially being told it wasn't the resturant's responsibility that I was "too picky". So I just asked my husband to pay quickly and hurried out before I started to cry in the resturant. I suppose this could be my fault for not fully explaining how disgusting I found their food, but I thought that would be impolite feedback surrounded by customers. The tartar sauce (which the 1/3 of a shotglass size of dip wouldn't have even been appropriate for the size of fish even if it hadn't been sweet pickles) seemed a more polite excuse than saying their breading and fish was physically inedible. I didn't try to have it replaced or cause a scene, yet I still feel like I was being treated like I was trying to "get one over" on them. The salted caramel milkshake was very tasty tho?

Quality: Food is of above average quality depending on the item. Lots of home made food which you can easily tell, and I appreciate, sweet potato fries are very good, side vegetables are fresh and cooked properly. I got prime rib both times. First time in winter it was essentially perfect. This time was a different story. Ordered medium rare, got medium, au jus and steak were both extremely extremely salty. Almost inedibley salty. Points for not giving me an allergic reaction, but prime rib is pretty safe anyways. Price: Mostly expensive. Sandwichs are not a bad deal (they're big), but my prime rib was ~$29. For 29 dollars I expect my prime rib to be absolutely perfect. Look at other items on the menu, pasta dishes around $18, wings a dollar each, some appetizers are very expensive. I understand that to have these kinds of quality ingredients at this remote location is expensive, but that doesn't change the fact. Service: Comes out to average. First time our server was perfect, most recently our server was never refilling our drinks, and forgot some items we ordered and we had to remind her. Atmosphere: Above average. I like the 3 distinct dining areas that can cater to whatever experience you prefer. The loud, twilight zone esque bar and patio area, the warm log cabin themed main dining area, or the casual diner booths out front. Overall: 4 out of 5. When in the area, I will definitely be coming back. Only reasons its not 5 is because of the extremely salty prime rib I got. Why didnt I complain and re-order you ask? With my food allergy its the safest item on the menu, and if you know how prime rib is prepared, its already seasoned and cooked ahead of time. That means the entire rib is going to be oversalted, can't really change it. Hopefully this does not happen again.
