First time to Quebec City and we couldn't be more impressed by this French restaurant on the main drag. We did not have reservations but arrived at 5 p.m. and sat at the bar, which is our preference. We loved the ambience and decor. The staff was very knowledgeable and helpful to us Americans. They made the most amazing cocktails, and the food was 10-star good. Had the socca (Pancake with chickpea flour, whipped tofu with zaatar, fennel, radishes, oranges, dehydrated olives). wonderful combination of flavors. A beautiful cafe right by the Dorchester Parking. Loved the aesthetic decor of the cafe. We were lucky to get a spot the moment we walked in because I expect this establishment to be well occupied on a Saturday morning. The staff are very friendly, and were kind enough to communicate with us in English without any hesitation. We really enjoyed the Pan Cakes and the Shakshuka. Since we were in a rush to explore city my only regret is to have so little time to chill here. I highly recommend and would definitely return. read more

My partner and I took a trip to Quebec City recently and, as always, were on the hunt for the perfect coffee shop to try some delicious, high quality espresso while sitting in a cozy, warm ambiance. WE FOUND IT! Maelstrom Saint-Roch was perfect - Brick walls, wood tables, a mix of industrial with modern touches - the perfect place to get settled in for a good conversation, good book, and some damn good coffee/espresso. We've spent a lot of time and money in coffeeshops over the years and we always order an espresso, a latte and a hot coffee or cold brew. These give us a good idea of the quality a place has to offer - Maelstrom did not disappoint. The espresso was one of the best we've had in a long while - perfectly pulled, enjoyable to drink. Delicious. My latte was also expertly made with steamed milk fit for beautiful latte art. All served in ceramic mugs with saucers. They do offer free wifi which is great if you need to study or work here, but there were also people just chatting over a morning cup of coffee or reading the newspaper. They also have a cocktail bar that I believe gets going later in the day - we would have LOVED to come back to try some coffee cocktails, but we were short on time. Overall, Maelstrom deserve every good review they get - the staff was friendly, the product is very high quality and the atmosphere is well worth going out of your way for. Food it also good for the breakfast - they have omlet, poached eggs with salmon, French toast etc. Everything we ordered were fresh and tasty. One of those rare cafes that are even better in person than how they appear in photos. I had one day in Quebec City and came here both for coffee in the morning and for the bar at night. I really enjoyed both vibes. In the morning, there was a light breeze through the open windows, and a good (but not too busy) mix of individuals with laptops or books and groups seated for brunch. I ordered a latte (for here), which they served in a rustic/farm-chic cappuccino cup, and the shakshuka, which was well-priced for the portion. The bilingual baristas were friendly and checked in (sparingly) which was appreciated. I also enjoyed the chill music in the background and even looked up some of the songs to save to my playlists. At night, I sat at the bar and journaled alone; the lighting was dim and cocktails were served in cute glassware with reindeer/Christmas themes. I love a cocktail bar that doubles as a cafe. I was pretty impressed with the space. Lots of natural lights, good wooden tables great decorations. It makes you feel at peace and puts you at ease to hang out and grab either a coffee (in my opinion a tea) or a drink. Now the cocktails, a little above the average price point in Quebec city but I was very impressed with the cocktail ingredients. It seems whoever the cocktail artist behind the bar really put some thought into each and every drink. I appreciated that when we had our various drinks. My spicy margarita was good blend of kick and tequila. My friend got the what's up doc which is what I expected from a carrot based cocktail. It was a good blend of carrot and other flavor that made this cocktail a 5/5. The bartender was attentive and was always refilling our water. I wish this place existed in New York, I would be here all the time. We didn't get any of the coffee cocktails but it'll be motivation for me to return. read more

Jackpot on both. This was one of the best meals we ate the entire trip, and we ate a lot of good meals! Both were huge meals that looked like they came out of a very professional kitchen. The omelette was absolutely awesome and it came with fruit, salad and a baguette.
