I think I'm being a bit nice for giving it a 3 stars. My review is usually based on 2 important aspects. #1 being the service of utmost importance. #2 taste of food. Service here was average. It was nothing outstanding and nothing bad either. I was the one who walked in to ask for seating and had to ask several times for a highchair. We have a 1 yr old baby. Oh btw there is no changing table in the washrooms. So if you have a baby make sure you request a booth seat. At least this way you can easily change your baby on the booth seat without anyone having to see. Lol. My family ordered: - duck confit - burgers and fries - Meat Pie (DO NOT ORDER THIS!) overall the duck was a good portion but dry and salty. The burgers were apparently the only thing that was good which we had ordered but the fries came out so burnt my husband cut the inside of his mouth with a burnt sharp French fry. His gums inside his mouth actually started to bleed. Omg. Now let's talk about the meat pie which was so rock hard you can probably throw it at somebody and it would literally injure them. The pie crust was ok but the inside of the pie was rock hard meat that was sauceless and dry that chewing this meat made my jaws hurt. Just trying to swallow the meat inside the pie was so disgusting you could not possibly enjoy the food. Ambiance - cute and quaint. Very homey feel inside or you can choose to sit out on the patio where it was so hot. We decided to sit inside for this reason and it was nice and comfortable. Staff service - not bad. But nothing that stood out either. Overall - ok place if you looking for a quick bite. But the food is hit or miss. Your just taking a risk if you eat here. There are still better places within a 2 min walk that you can choose to eat at. And please please please DO NOT order the meat pie unless you want to be chewing rock-hard pieces of meat that is dry and flavorless. read more

This place is located in a great location with nice outdoor seating. The food is not good, but the service was decent . The decor was interesting with a homey vibe. We came during lunch service and we were able to sit down right away without a reservation. We ordered a 3 duck appetizer dish, duck sausage, and the woodplank salmon. Appetizer: It was a duck appetizer made 3 different ways with braised duck legs, duck pate, and duck creme brûlée. The duck legs were tasty and went well with the pear. The pate was ok, not up to par on other pate dishes in town. It was more of a shredded duck pate on a crouton instead of a real pate. The duck creme brûlée was gross in flavor and had a textured consistency like fatty duck pudding. We did not want to finish it. The tart cranberries and pear couldn't mask the flavor and texture. Salmon: the salmon was dry and overcooked. The sauce on it was not good and had a weird aftertaste. The potatoes were good though. Duck Sausage: This was the only good dish of the entire meal. The sausage had lots of flavor and was cooked perfectly. The pasta was very flavorful and had the right amount of sauce on it. I could eat this again multiple times. read more

Had a great time for cocktails here one afternoon. Highlights: - Grosse Rita ($24 canadian): huge martini glass full of a concoction of mixed alcohols to be shared with friends. Ordered it for a the novel fun factor with my 2 girlfriends and was happily surprised when it tasted good and wasn't too sweet. Tequila, rhubarb, and ginger ale were a few of the ingredients along with lime slices and rosemary sprigs to make an impressive pink monster cocktail. - Atmosphere: we originally wanted to sit outside but the weather got us inside and I'm glad it did. The decor was amazing with crocheted hanging lights by the bar and upside down teacups and saucers lights on the other side. One table had a swinging bench for seats. - Staff: friendly and fun Lowlights: - Didn't get to try any of the other cocktails or burgers cause we were short on time. Glad to find a fun spot in mellow old Quebec City during the week. read more

If you're looking for craft cocktails, there are a ton to choose from at Batinse. HUGE selection of options! We also enjoyed their bacon-wrapped sausages. They have a ton of small plates and bites to choose from, and you feel very young and hip being there in general. We enjoyed sitting outside and enjoying drinks before continuing our walk down Rue St Jean. We didn't end up staying for dinner (the menu was similar to what we'd eaten that day) but the choices were plentiful. read more

Great location with outside seating and a cool swing bench table just inside. We wanted to try the Aunt Janice's meat pie but they were all out. Ended up having the sweet and savory crepes. The crepes were cooked perfectly with tasty fillings. The sweet crepe had a caramel drizzle, while the savory had a sweet balsamic reduction with a big chunk of bacon wrapped sausage. read more

Cute hipster place very centrally located near City Hall in QC with below par food and subtly racist service. Some of our dishes came in Tupperware/baking glass (my salmon pie came in a measuring cup) - the definition of hipster, really. Food was alright - salmon pie was decent, cheese salad was huge, duck breast was nicely seared and the sauce well done but was lacking in salt. Their red sangria was not great. Vastly overpriced for what it was, which made what happened at the end of the meal even more galling. We first received a check with a handwritten "total" - that is, the waiter overwrote the total with the final number if we were giving a 15% tip. Which is fine, whatever, maybe they get a lot of tourists who don't have tipping as part of their own culture. However, when paying with card, the waiter, rather than giving the machine to my father to allow him to select a tip, selected a 15% tip for himself. It was such a stunning thing that we didn't think to say anything. Maybe we had been mistaken about what had happened, we thought, maybe it was the custom here in Quebec. We were far too nonconfrontational and kind about the matter. Why did this happen to us? My guess is that the waiter took one look at my Chinese-American family (though I guess you can't see the American part) and decided we couldn't possibly be capable of understanding tipping culture. Never mind that I speak perfect English. Let's be clear here, however. Even if no one at my table could speak a word of English, that's no excuse for the behavior that occurred. If you're considering eating here, I encourage you to look somewhere else. Even if you don't run into the service issues we did, this place's food and prices would merit them a 2/3 stars at best. read more

Batinse had a lot to live up to after Aux Anciens. Coming to Batinse after eating at one of the most prestigious restaurants in all of Quebec put a lot of pressure on this meal. Starting off with the decor. The decor definitely gave off an old warehouse vibe, but at the same time it was homey. I ordered the "poke" and the Shepherd's pie. I'll start with the poke. The reason I said "poke" was because of the fact that I come from California. In this "poke," there were jalapeno peppers, cherry tomatoes, cilantro, bruschetta, and extremely small pieces of salmon. This may be a Canadian recipe, but i definitely did not think that the flavors came together into one cohesive meal. My Sheperd's pie was filling, and filled the void from the appetizer course. To be honest, if this was a review based on my family's opinion, Batinse would probably have gotten a 2 star rating. I was the most content with my overall meal; the rest of my family leaving unsatisfied and hungry. Be my guest, or don't up to you. read more

Food fair, cocktails decent, fun atmosphere. So why the low stars because the indifference of the server. I'm kind of seeing a trend because other Asian reviewers seemed to have the same questionable service. Once shown to our table, the server came by asking if we wanted anything to drink or needed anything. Ummm...like a quick minute to sit and settle down, we were still standing and about to put down our bags. But that promptness and attention was the last of it. I felt like whenever our server finally arrived any thing we asked her about on the menu was answered so flippantly. "Oh it's fine", " that's nice", "you'd like it." Now really!?! What kind of answers are those? We were finally able to our orders in, which included the moments of flippant answers, and us repeating our choices a few times because of her being distracted and even walking away in the middle of ordering. We checked out the wackiness of the decor. Eclectic would be the word to describe the interior. It took a while to get our food and the person dropping it off kept on taking it to another table. We'd ask for knife and napkins...never got them. Had to take them from neighboring tables. Would have ordered more drinks but server never came back after taking our orders. She was too busy paying attention to the non-Asian patrons. We got 2 cheeses and 1 chartreuse option. Would have been nice to know what they were, but when I asked for description she just told me she'd pick out her favorite. Which I still don't know what those were. Got the salmon pie. Interesting presentation with it being served in bakeware, but just fair. It was mostly salty and not so much savory. The crust was flaky like a croissant. The salad that came with it was a good portion. Hubby had the lamb and bone marrow. I got an "eh" from him on that. Definitely had better. The marrow was on the smaller side and the lamb looked more like a beef steak than lamb. Sangria cane out kind of warm, so had to wait for the ice to cool it down. The Gerald was interesting with the clove and rosemary mix. Would have ordered more but never could cuz the server never came back around! Btw last note for those wearing shorts and sitting in one of the interior round tables, BEWARE. I kept on scratching and hitting my legs because the side edges of table are not smooth but instead jagged. Ouch. You can't tell until you whack your leg a couple of times while shifting or leg-crossing. read more

The atmosphere at Batinse is about as hipster as it gets: flannel shirts, crocheted lampshades, beards and a plywood bar. It also boasts the most warm and friendly service we encountered north of the US border. I wish we had asked for the name of the bartender before leaving, because he deserves a personal shoutout, but since he was so involved there (he actually created several of the cocktails on the ambitious menu) I have a feeling you'll meet him yourself when you go. First and foremost, Batinse is all about the cocktails. There's a masculine and a feminine list ("mes oncles" and "mes tantes") but each one featured sweet and savory elements, plus flavor notes from herbal to smoky to tart. We tried several, but by far our two favorites involved fire: one with a charred cinnamon stick and spiced rum, and another with a flaming puff of absinthe topped off with rosemary and gin. Oh my, they were delicious, and light enough for repeat visits. My husband was more in a beer mood, and the bartender was just as gracious and helpful to him, recommending several bringing tastes of each one before he decided. After hearing his reaction to the first beer, he had a more specific recommendation for the second. This is what bartending is supposed to be all about, but sadly most bartenders don't deliver, making our experience at Batinse that much more special. We only tried one dish, the cod and shrimp cakes, but it was wonderful -- crispy and flavorful, dressed with sprouts and tomatoes and surprisingly filling for an appetizer shared three ways. We were really tempted by the gorgeous plate of poutine we saw delivered to another table, but with dinner reservations looming ahead, we just couldn't. If we're ever back in the area, though, I will make sure to have a full meal there! read more

This place was was extremely trendy and the decor was adorable. The food was was delicious and very different from anything Ive had before. Not only is the food great, but so are the drinks. I see that several people have had unfortunate experiences with the wait staff here. Being ignored or spoken down to seems to be their speciality. We had very frustrating experience at this restaurant for similar reason. I can't say much about the food, we didn't last that long. We arrived at the restaurant and wanted to sit inside. The hostess wasn't at her station so I advanced towards one of the wait staff who was standing at the entrance and who came rushing out, taking me quite literally by the arm to escort me back to the street side of the hotess station. Once seated outside, the waitress made a grand display of checking on the surrounding tables and making sure we could see that she wasn't going to be serving us very quickly. After several minutes of this, we finally called her over and placed our order. A bit later, I asked the hostess a question and she replied that she be back to answer it, as she had other business to attend to. She never came back. We decided we'd had enough of their antics, paid the bill, leaving no tip for such abominable service and left. If you do choose to consume here, don't cross the anal-retentive staff or else be prepared to be snubbed or talked to. read more

I ordered their Shepherd's Pie and it was good, albeit it did seem to be just a little warmer than room temperature when it arrived. Maybe that's the way they do it, I don't know? But overall tasty, good flavors. They have a nice list of very interesting and mixology heavy drinks as well, which I always love. Our server was great, and prices are what you can expect in Old Quebec. Pricier than what I'm used to, but average for the area. read more

We stopped here after a busy day walking the old city. I got the Irish stew and it was mediocre at best. It was luke warm. The portion size was small. I'm leaving hungry. The fried chicken was hot and fresh but lacked seasoning. The servers on the other hand, are so great. Ours checked in with us often, allowed us to taste different beers before deciding, but just made a poor recommendation off the food menu. We won't be back, but hopefully you'll have better luck than we did. read more

Our party ordered most things - salmon pie, marrow & veal, meat pie, lamb, seafood poutine, two charcuterie boards, foie gras, and more. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals! Quite possibly one of the worst restaurant experiences I've had in all of Quebec. Things were forgotten, overpriced, and the tourtière was tasteless to the point where dousing it with ketchup and salt did nothing. It was also clearly microwaved from frozen - the top was hard and the bottom "crust" was mush. Apparently it's "grandma's" style, but I'd only believe that if it was made by a grandma who hated her family. If my grandma made this tourtière I'd probably hate her right back. K bye. read more

Our hotel recommended this restaurant as we were looking for a nearby restaurant for lunch. The food was supposed to be québécoise classics with an updated spin. Overall, the food was not great. I had a salad with tomato soup. The salad was advertised as a "charcuterie" salad, but it only had 4 tiny pieces of prosciutto. My dad had the lunch hot dog special (more of a sausage) and it was pretty dry. Overall, we were extremely disappointed in the food. There are much better restaurants in the area. read more

My wife and I had a fantastic dinner here. When you first enter, you are struck by the decor. My wife just about lost her mind over the crocheted lanterns and the porch swing that serves as a table seat. They have a good drink menu and our waitress was very helpful in helping us to select our beers as we were unfamiliar with them. We ended up splitting a poutine and a shepard's pie, both of which were excellent. Great food - great staff - really good price - highly recommend! read more

if anthropologie opened up a restaurant, batinse is what it would look like. the decor was very cute and eclectic. we had two cocktails to start, both of which were good. you can tell they put a lot of thought into the mixology here. I wouldn't necessarily say either were memorable, but I appreciate the effort. food: the charcuterie plate - and it was sooooo good! the proscuitto was thick cut and we thoroughly enjoyed the cheese selection and sliced cranberry bread. i would come back for this plate alone! tomahawk pork chop - amazing!! the cut was huge and the sauce was the perfect balance of sweet and savory, yum! shepherd's pie - good but I wouldn't order it again. it was a modern take on a traditional dish, and I think I much prefer the original style. dessert: rhubarb pudding and maple ice cream - i really loved the doughy texture but found it too sweet for my taste. the ice cream had good flavor but it wasn't super rich and creamy like how I prefer.. my boyfriend on the other hand absolutely loved both. my only issue was the service was a bit slow. overall, it was a great dining experience. read more

Service was actually five stars! Two of us showed up for a late dinner on a rainy weeknight and not many other diners there. Nonetheless the staff was very welcoming and helpful. The menu is pretty much Canadian/fusion comfort food. Everything we had was very good; don't miss their special wonton appetizers. We had high hopes based on the reviews, but this restaurant was a disappointment. It's overpriced, and they don't put as much quality into the food as they do their hip decor and marketing. The meat pie was dry and pretty terrible. The burger was ok, but not nothing special for $18...it did not come close to living up to it's exceptional sounding description on the menu. Staff was fine. They should get 5 stars for service and ambience. I have taken 1 star off for the lack of veggie options. I am a vegetarian, so most of the food was not accessible to me. Had an appetizer salad followed by a dinner salad... While that was not a satisfying meal, the food was very good! My partner had the "normal" food and he said it was very good.
