This place is a find! Living in NYC most women know that moving into the city means trying out many spas before you find the "one". This is it! After having been to spas all over the city for facials I am happy to commend madison spa (Irina) to be a great revelation. Here's what my first facial was like: The place is tucked in between streets on Madison Avenue. It's got nice treatment rooms. Irina (she did my facial) definitely knows what goes into keeping skin relaxed and happy. I went in with slightly blotchy skin and acne scars. She analysed my skin before making suggestions as to what kind of a facial was best suited for me. She was honest about my skin and how I could treat it better. Also not once during the two hour facial, did she push any product endorsement on me (big plus). Irina then proceeded to treat my skin for two hours (including treatment time for face packs). My facial included a mini micro derm, an oxygen facial and extractions. She was very thorough without pinching my skin. The best part about this facial was that the next day my skin was actually not red or more blotchy than usual. I received my fair share of compliments over the next few days as my skin looked rested and happy. I would love to go back there and see how this feels after 3-4 facials. Saw a GroupOn for a 50% off couples massage lesson and got really excited. "Sounds fun and what a deal, right?" Wrong. The ambiance of the spa was dark and uncomfortable. It felt kinda shady and I didn't feel very welcome. My girlfriend and I were showed our room and told that we would take turns learning to massage each other for an hour with a masseuse. We were excited to learn and ready for a new experience but, turns out, we didn't learn anything. Our instructor was very kind and surprisingly funny but the level of difficulty of the lesson was extremely low. He showed us the simplest hand movements and he even agreed that we could go on YouTube for everything these days. Plus, our masseuse kinda smelt bad. I truly don't mean to be rude but you would expect to be relaxed in a spa. Following our lesson, we were instructed to meet the woman at the counter. She immediately told us that we owed cash for tips/taxes. I told her that I only had $5 in cash but that I had a debit card. She responded, "I told you on the phone to bring enough cash". I quickly told her that she was mistaken and that I was informed only to call a day in advance to confirm my appointment. She rudely sighed, took my $5, and sarcastically asked us, "what am I supposed to do then? Tip him myself?". My girlfriend and I exchanges shocked glances and awkwardly left the spa. My boyfriend bought a Groupon here for a couples massage class as a Christmas present for me. We were expecting a lot more than what was offered. They offered the bare minimum- a couples massage class, nothing more nothing less. The spa is hidden on the fourth floor of a building and when we walked in, we were enclosed in rundown pink walls. I don't know why anyone would come here for a spa, this place did not seem sanitary whatsoever. It seemed like a place opened in the 60s with no renovations done since then. Our massage class was a one-on-one ran by a Swedish guy in his 50s. The room we were placed in was small with a massage bed in the middle and an obsolete CD player on the side. Me and my boyfriend alternated, both having 30 minutes to learn and execute the techniques our masseuse taught us on each other. The moves and "techniques" our masseuse taught us was useless and ineffective. There was barely any massaging involved. Both my boyfriend and I did not feel we learned anything useful and would not recommend this place to anyone. I would've given this place a one star if it wasn't for our masseuse who at the least, was very nice. However, at the end of our session, the lady at the front asked us to pay for tax and tip. We didn't know we had to pay an $8 tax and it had to be in cash. We only had $5 in cash and she was really rude about our situation, sarcastically asking what she's supposed to do and if she should pay for us. I would give this place no stars if I could. Groupon deal was a waste. Their scheduling appointment is horrible and disorganized. I was confirmed a week ago to go in after work by 6pm and nobody called me to confirm my appointment for tomorrow. I decided to call to be told by a Russian lady (heavy accent) that I was not in their system and I will have to leave work early to attend. Wtffff? I told her I will cancel my voucher and she said GO AHEAD!! This place is ran by Russians who are money hungry and bad for business. Is it Slim Spa or Madison Spa? 422 Madison is a relaxed cozy spa. The staff here is very easy-going, accomodating and great and helping to relax you and ease your cares away. The prices are very reasonable. I really come here to relax after a very long week or day at work. I can come and escape from my worries and know I can let the massage therapists knead my worries and stress away. This might be New York's best kept secret - and possibly its best spa. I will say that yesterday I got the best facial of my life. That's pretty serious. I had a European facial which included microdermabrasion, extractions, oxygen facial treatment (which is what Madonna uses to look so young!) and a slew of other services. It is evident that the spa's owner knows what she's doing and that she's both knowledgeable and passionate about her work. It shows. She was able to explain what she was putting on my face and why - as well as the effect it would have on my skin. She was right, since I went out a few hours after the facial and received complements about how fresh faced I looked. I could feel that my skin was tighter and more alive. The best and most surprising part for me was that after all the extractions I didn't have one bit of redness. I have very fair and sensitive skin so usually I leave a facial blotchy and red. This time, I was able to hit some stores minutes later and know my face looked absolutely fine. No redness! Even today my skin looks better than it has in years! I also appreciate how warm and inviting the spa is. Everyone is very friendly and after my treatment I was able to relax with some tea and chocolates in a dimly lot comfortable room. I wish it were possible to give this place more stars because it deserves every last one of them. Have you ever received a full body massage... but on your face? Thats basically the only way I can sum up how amazing my skin looked and felt after this treatment. I kid you not when I say my skin was GLOWING - blackheads gone, skin as smooth as ever and whatever she used during my facial smelled absolutely delicious. After Irina (the owner) analyzed my skin type, she recommended a step-by-step facial treatment which included an ultrasonic dermabrasion treatment, a cooling mask, oxygen rejuvenation, manual cleaning of my pours and a massage from the chest up. Every last second felt amazing - I think my favorite part was the oxygen treatment - it was such a refreshing and unique feeling on my delicate skin. At one point during the treatment, the owner left the room while my cooling mask dried and I got up to get my phone (because I'm obsessed with it). She came back and pretty much scolded me for not "relaxing" - which I totally appreciate at the end of the day. And from that point on I did just that- and MAN I felt amazing when all was said and done. Facials and beauty treatments in general are costly but believe me when I tell you it's all worth it at 422 Madison Spa. As a woman on the run half the time- it felt great to get some quality me time in. At the end of my treatment, Irina brought me over to a candlelit room with herbal tea, cookies and godiva chocolates. I was pretty much mind blown at that point already but it's nice touches like these that keep clients coming back. She made me feel so comfortable and was really nice to talk to during my treatment that lasted over an hour and a half. She has been doing this for over 20 years and is amazing in her line of work - a true professional that works wonders! I got the combo of foot refloxology, hand, scalp, neck massage and "healing face mask" i really liked it, especially the face mask/massage. irina said she invented it. i dunno, i just know my face was glowing and not all scrunched up for once. Its really an office, with a miniscule waiting room. no frills. . . but the prices are reasonable. my only complaint is the communication was really bad. the woman who did my feet told me to put a robe on when she was done. the robe still had candywrappers in the pockets from the last person, so i lost all relaxation. Then irina came in and said i should've remained laying down. Oh, there is one other complaint, they kept leaving the door open. That also made me lose some of my mellowness. Now that I know the drill (stay laying down), I'll be back and insist they keep the damn door closed. read more

Yesterday, I went for a hydrotherapy colonic session at this place. When I first called to inquire, they told me to come in and they would give me the Groupon deal. Communication was bit challenging as there was a little language barrier. They insist I get there at 5:15pm for my appointment. Once I arrived to the place it was dark and bit dated. I waited for 35 minutes. They directed me to go to the bathroom which was absolutely filthy! IT smelled here bad and it was dirty (the toilet was disgusting!). I felt bit ill on my stomach and though about leaving. The lady who did the treatment was nice, however she kept answering her phone and stepping out. The session is supposed to be 45 min. Mine was about 30min as she was rushing to get to the next customer. I am not sure if she really cleaned the room after I stepped out to use the bathroom. When I came back 2 min later she was telling me that I had to leave for the next person to come in. Detail they charged me an extra $8 without explaining why (the receptionist did not speak English!). I will never go back there and advise anyone looking to get a colonic to avoid this place! Very dirty and smelled really bad! I had this done in another place before and this was not what I experienced! Horrible! If I could I would give no stars AT ALL! Awful! read more

This is my first Yelp review ever, but I absolutely had to do it because my experience at this spa was terrible. Its Yelp reviews are surprisingly decent, and I don't want anyone else to be duped by this place! Let's start at the beginning: My boyfriend booked us a couples massage with the chocolate scrub and drinks, snacks, etc. at the end. I believe it was $280 total. So we walked in to a carpeted, grossly warm and old-fashioned looking room, and a woman asks if we have an appointment. My boyfriend says we do, and then she tells him that he didn't call to make the appointment. That's 100% not true. Regardless, she says she'll make it work for us. Great. About 10 minutes later, we're escorted to a room with two beds with no holes for the faces. We're given very hard, uncomfortable towels that, in all honesty, had me questioning exactly what type of spa we were at. Then, two women walk in. They don't introduce themselves. They don't ask us about any injuries or sensitive spots. They start massaging us and the lights were going on and off, there was constant rustling for their tools because they were clearly unorganized, and they never once asked if the pressure they were applying was ok. For the record, it was a very dinky massage and they missed an entire section of my back! Moving on to the next part: the sauna. They escorted us to the sauna room. There was mold above the sauna on the ceiling, the sauna never got very hot, it was tiny, and one of the little tables inside was broken. Next was the chocolate "scrub." Despite this being a couples massage, they separated us. I was given disposable underwear and asked to put it on, but every time I tried the woman left the door open! When I asked her if I could close it the first time, she told me to wait. The second time, she gave me attitude for not closing it sooner. So strange. Anyway, she left the room for a bit before the chocolate part began. I looked at the mixture for the chocolate - it was literally melted white chocolate in a bowl and nothing else, except for the woman's eyelashes! So she comes back in, covers me in melted white chocolate (and her eyelashes), and wraps me like a burrito and leaves me for 20 or so minutes. As I'm lying there, I can hear my boyfriend getting scrubbed down, changed, and offered water. He came in and sat with me for 10 minutes before anyone came to take care of me. Then I'm washed off. It didn't look like they cleaned the shower before I went in. They was no "scrub" involved, and even though I said multiple times I didn't want to get my hair wet, my bun was soaked by the end. Afterwards, I got dressed, and we were escorted to another room for wine and sweets. They never asked about allergies or what type of wine we liked. Instead, they poured us gross red wine and served us these weird lemon chocolate cookies, as well as some other stuff. We stayed for a few, and when we walked out, the woman asked us why we didn't stay longer! She kept asking if we liked the massage and had a good time, so being the wusses we are, we said we did. But let me be clear - THIS IS NOT A CLEAN OR PROFESSIONAL PLACE. I hate that I'm leaving such a bad review, but I can assure you -- this place is not as advertised and I highly recommend you go elsewhere! read more

I bought a groupon to get a hot stone massage and sauna package deal. I was greeted by Irena. She showed me to the massage room and the bathroom. I was not happy with the massage room where the service was about to take place. She chose a room where all these facial equipments are it was crowded and tacky and it did not set the tone for relaxation. Upset much. Ok I did not say anything I was thinking to myself maybe this is the only room! Ha boy was I wrong. She had a cd in the stereo where the music was just too much for me i asked her to change it which she did. Ok now we are on to something ha in the middle of the massage the cd was scratched so that was also annoying. Come on after a long day from work and I was looking forward to this massage the least you could do is set the tone. Ok so the massage was relaxing. I loved the feeling of the hot stones on my body. Irena did a somewhat decent job, she was not rushing and she took her time to get my problem areas such as my back. The sauna was nice it's a little tiny area and that is when I saw that they had nicer more relaxing rooms! Ok why didn't she take me in one of those rooms?! The towels on the massage table are course and harsh on the body I hate that. If you are looking for a basic spa this Is it! When I completed my service Irena offered me refreshments very nice of her but I declined because as a city girl I'm always on the move got a million things to do every day so I wanted this time to count and be relaxing. I had a microdermabrasion facial done which left my skin feeling soft, smooth, and simply perfect! -This place is very high end located on Madison ave in a huge building which you need to buzz up-- it is a very nice welcoming environment-- they served me tea right after my facial which just added to my overall relaxed feel-- its been about a week later and i still receive compliments on my skin! read more

I've got a Groupon gift certificate for a Chocolate Body Treatment in Madison SPA. I've done it a couple of times before in that place and liked it. This time, today, 4/22/19, it was the most horrorable SPA experience in my life and the first time when I literally didn't leave tips. First, when I stepped in, I was told that they don't have my reservation. They offered to wait for two hours, but suddendly desided to accept me. The usual sequence for this treatment is a following: chocolate wrap - shower (you lay on the table and they wash chocolate out) - sauna. This time the lady insisted that I have sauna first, than I had wrap, and than the lady gave me a shower head and told me to wash chocolate out by my self. Finally, a cherry on the cake: I was told that Groupon certificate is expired and they don't accept it as a payment, Eben though they publish on Groupon that the payment is never expired. When I asked them to call manager, the lady said with attitude that she will talk to the owner later. Just a waste of your money and time, and very unpleasant aftertaste. read more

It is not a modern spa, it looks more like your grandmother's house with random decorations everywhere. I got the Slim Fast package and was not satisfied at all! I have a back problem and before starting my back massage they never asked me about sensitive or health issues. Then they just had me waiting around for 45 minutes wondering where i was suppose to go or do. Finally they came back in gave me greasy mens sandals to wear from room to room. They also didn't have a designated place to put my purse and clothes so as more people came in our stuff was being moved everywhere. When i went to leave my shoes were missing and after a half hour were found in a room i never went into while someone was getting a massage. None of the treatments were great and would not recommend this to anyone looking for a relaxing day! read more

I had a great massage with organic white chocolate, napped in my little cozy chocolate cocoon, and finished with a warm shower and sauna. After leaving an unfavorable review she contacted me through yelp basically calling me a liar and then saying she would remove my review...I understand her leaving her opinion, but numerous times under FAKE NAMES is not necessary. After I complained to yelp, the messages disappeared and I updated my review. She then commented on the review (wrote more untrue statements in trying to discredit me) and after no response she has removed the last comment and written one over it today along with changing the name of her spa on Yelp. Had an amazing appointment- i was in desperate need for a facial just in time for the holiday season and couldn't decide which one suits my skin type; my girlfriend recommended this place and i gave it a try! Irena the facialist was absolutely wonderful and gave me an amazing microdermabrasion facial- she removed all my dead, shattered, wintery skin and completely rejuvenated and made my skin glow! - the produce itself was painfree, stress free and i fell asleep for about an hr! -Truly a wonderful experience and i will definitely be back! read more

This place was an absolute rip-off. I bought a facial and massage for myself and my partner as a gift. The massage only equated to rubbing oil on your body while facial meant putting on a facial mask. It was such a horrible experience. Irena is the best! I came here after dealing with new breakouts for several months. I had been to the dermatologist who only suggested Retina, but, with my wedding coming up this was too risky, and I was at my whit's end. I had never had a facial before so was clueless as to which treatment I should get, but Irena analyzed my skin and told me I should go for the oxygen facial and micro term. The actual facial was relaxing and I left feeling great. After 3 treatments I can truly say my skin has improved. I feel much more confident about my skin for my big day. This place is a little eccentric. I bought a Groupon for three facials back in the spring and just used the last one today. Until today, I was not going to come back after I finished the Groupon. My first two appointments were good facials, but the table is very hard and there was no pillow to go under my knees. I also was kept waiting for 15 or so minutes--not good when I picked the place because I work across the street and thought I could just take a lunch hour. Today's facial, with Margo (sp?), was amazing. She got a pillow for my knees without me having to ask, and I kept falling asleep, she was so gentle. My face feels amazing and I want to try other treatments "next door." The only thing is the table is still hard. read more

The treatment itself was very nice - I did a chocolate body wrap! - surprisingly relaxing and enjoyable. I left feeling better and more relaxed than when I came in. I am a fan of massages, but I think I enjoyed this treatment more than a regular massage. I docked a star because some things are so dated about this place. The decor looks like 20 years ago - the owner of this business should invest in a professional interior designer to rehaul (the carpet needs to go and the wall design in the shower room is tacky). The massage tables didn't have a hole for the face and was hard. And the bathroom didn't have toilet paper. Those things, however, I didn't mind so much because after all I got this place from a Groupon, and it was about half the price of what I would pay for a body wrap in a fancy spa in Chelsea or SoHo. The little sauna was nice. I have 2 advices for the owner: 1- invest in a professional interior designer to redecorate the place, and you will be able to charge a lot more. 2 - the shower time and the sauna time of the body wrap can be twice as long. Then they told me that they couldn't do it and perhaps they could take them next week, even though it clearly states on their website that they take spafinder gift cards. Went in for a facial, which is something I'll get perhaps once or twice a year at most and I have sensitive skin, so I am usually cautious. What differentiates this spa from the others I have trialled, is the sheer quality. The spa's owner is maybe the most proficent I've come across in this line of service. This spa may not have the most 'bells and whistles' about it, the decor is old fashioned and under-stated. In fact if anything its largely free of any blatant commercialism which is a refreshing change in the mass media environment of today. If you want a very good quality men's facial, look no further - the results were the best I've experienced. read more

I received the worst massage of my life here three weeks ago. My husband booked couple's massage for us as a treat; we were in town on our 'babymoon'. He called the spa ahead of time to verify they do pre-natal massages. The whole experience was awful, from our arrival and inability to gain access to the building (the receptionist kept yelling at us through the intercom to 'just push the button', and after 10 minutes still wouldn't just come down to let us in), to the dirty waiting area with used tea cups sitting on the table, to the actual massage...it was awful. For the massage, we walked into the treatment room to be greeted by two flat tables (no massage tables with a hole for your face; no pillows for my prenatal massage) and two small towels (no sheet for proper covering/draping during the massage). The towel barely covered me and I was self-conscious with the fact that the male masseuse massaging my husband could see a lot of me. The actual massage technique was non-existent, my husband gives better massages. They massaged us very quickly, so it wasn't relaxing, and were all over the place, feet, head, back, feet, roll over, feet, leg, back, roll over again. it was crazy. Then she asked me to lie on my back, which is not recommended for pregnant women, and I then knew she had no experience with prenatal massage. If you're considering this place for a massage, STAY AWAY. read more

We told her why we were there and she promptly called the owner. She put me on the phone with her and she told me that I was supposed to call yesterday to confirm the appointment. I couldn't believe this. I have never heard of a place where THE CLIENT has to call and confirm an appointment. Apparently that's how they do things there and our appointment was cancelled without us even knowing. This lady obviously does not know how to run a business or treat her clients.
