I come to the co-op for fruits and vegetables before I go to Whole Paycheck or Willy. And while I don't buy as much wine as I used to, I've switched my allegiance from a liquor store a couple miles from my house to the co-op. Whenever we have a gathering at our house I can get whatever booze I need there. Most satisfying to me is that every dollar I spend there helps keep this invaluable local resource going. Anyone living within a mile of the store would be wise to spend more shopping time at the co-op.

I had an extremely upsetting interaction with an employee of this this store. I parked in a…read more20-minute space while briefly visiting the coffee shop next door. "Regent Street" was scrawled in Sharpie at the top of the parking sign, making it unclear that the space was supposedly reserved exclusively for this business. Instead of politely explaining or asking me to move, the employee screamed in my face for approximately five minutes and told me he hoped I would never enter his store again. This level of aggression over an understandable parking mistake was intimidating and completely disproportionate. Local businesses are part of a shared community, and misunderstandings should be handled with basic courtesy. Toxic behavior like this creates hostility and makes the neighborhood feel feel less welcoming. No one deserves to be treated this way.

Let's talk about VALUE. Metcalfs by most food estimation. Is a "premium" grocery store. They get…read moreby on high priced good compared to their completion . One would assume they can do this by offering better quality goods and higher service. That being said. I find the store lacking. I often will go to the deli counter on lunch hour to get a half a pound of salad . Fine. The man they have working the counter has his unique thing he does that makes me physically ill. He basically "hocks a luggie" in his throat. I'm sorry. That's just disgusting. I won't delve deeply beyond that on him other then to say while he "gets the job done" he's does so with the absolute minimum in personality . Why have someone at a service counter who can't be "friendly" with customers. I really question the management because I'm sure they are fully aware. At least they SHOULD be. So that being said I went there today to get my lunch and a couple of other things. Business as usual. I didn't hear him clean his phlegm today so I felt really lucky. So I get to the front and they have lines and I go to self check out. Fine. I quickly scan my stuff and attempt to pay. The register asks if o want cash back, so I say yes! Of course I would! Then I see that they have these posted signs that say no cash back. So the machine has a melt down. I wait a couple of moments . And this middle aged woman ...with gray mid length hair comes up behind me to "help". She doesn't greet me or apologize she proceeds to scold me. And I defend my self and say , well the machine said I could , apologizing. I really didn't care if I could get cash I just did cuz the machine asked. So I'm like that's confusing for the customer to this woman. And she starts pushing back at me and I simply said" well, let's fix and move on". I just wanted to get though to move on in my day, cuz you know, I have to make money to pay the high prices at Metcalfs. At that point she took offense and said "you don't have to talk to me like that". And I got confused. "Fix it and move on" apparently is a foreign concept for the folks at Metcalfs. Okay. So at that point I'm done. I talk her to let it go . I thank her and tell her to have a nice day and I won't be back. I at that point leave and head elsewhere for lunch, I got Chipotle . Fair. As it was I decided to call the store and let them know ...the manager ... Chris ...who seemed very distracted and busy on the phone. So I think it's fair to say also not focused on the customer experience. I let him in on my experience. He apologized and asked me to return . I told him , no thanks. As it turns out the transaction did go though and the manager had to call me back to come retrieve my monies . Which I am loathe to do. You know as consumers we all have choices and we make those choices on something called "value". That equation is essentially a comparison analysis of price and perceived benefits . At this , based on prior and today's experience, Metcalfs fails. They get by on pretense over substance. I will not be retuning.

This location is a bit more well organized; however, that was really the only thing it had going for it. The selection and prices were really not very good. Some items were as much or more expensive than going to a regular grocery store. Along with that, despite the mask mandate, nobody here seemed to care about wearing masks, social distancing, sanitizing, or anything Covid related. The woman working came out without a mask to ring up my items, but did go back for one after she saw me wearing mine. But otherwise she didn't wear one and neither did any of the other customers.

What really shines here? Their food stall. I had the spam musubi and immediately went back inside to get 2 more lol. The person working the window even gifted me shrimp toast, which was very sweet. (The shrimp toast is fire). This is more of a pick up and go kind of spot, although they have stools and a counter if want to eat there. Think cafeteria vibes but not in a derogatory way. They sell out often. I know bc I came here yesterday around 2pm, SO excited for spam musubi, only to learn that they sold out of everything at 1pm LOL. Today? I made sure to get there around 1130am. Was able to get garlic butter shrimp (7 BIG shrimp, so flavorful) served with pasta salad (delicious, I usually do not love pasta salad), and rice. I also got a shrimp lumpia (delicious) and a spam musubi for later. Food was phenomenal as usual. The food scene in Madison is not as robust as other places I've lived, but this place? A gem. I walk up to the counter with my merchandise, pay, get change and leave. What I like best is the map and store rules. I am actually a fan of maps. I think our spatial capabilities suffer just a little bit every time we use google maps to tell us how to navigate while never actually looking at the map and where we are going. In any case, the fine cartography makes navigating 1,000 sq feet much easier. Plus if I were at all uncertain about opinionated whining or paying in large sums of change, I could easily look at the back of the map and realize that these things are not acceptable by the Clerk.
