CCM serves its purpose as the better grocer in the downtown area. It's perfect for the pop in, but you won't find me filling up my pantry shopping here. There are the occasional bargains, but then some prices that will have you confused. However, CCM has added more self checkouts since the pandemic and it really has sped up the checkout queue. An easy layout and simple checkout process are the positives for this grocer. read more

I've seen people walk through here making fun of the products they sell, but I never get negative feelings or intentions or anything from the employees (I think they try to give many types of people a chance to work). For one reason or another we can't all make it to Whole Foods or the Willy St Co-op or other more pretentious white-privileged places. This place at least does a better and better job of providing cheap basics with fancier styles and brands. Of course, I wish they would push towards fresher and more local/WI-based, but what can we do. They do delivery which is much needed and so helpful. 24/7 but not a lot going on here. You will be happier going to the majority of grocery stores in Madison, even acknowledging that the prices at Cap Center are higher due to the downtown location. Pros: private lot (although very small, it can get full), 24/7 service. Cons: Price, atmosphere, lack of good prepared foods. Price for 1 roll Pillsbury cookie dough ,1 box crackers, 1 guacamole (Simply Guacamole--packaged), and 1 package oreos $11.75. If you live immediately next to location and don't have a car or don't want to drive, it'll get the job done, although without a butcher department, deli, or a significant amount of hot foods. The Capitol Centre Market has quickly become my go-to grocery store when I: a) Don't want to give up my prime street parking spot in front of my house b) Am too lazy to put on real pants c) Am missing that ONE ingredient that I need for that recipe I pulled off of foodnetwork.com d) All of the above The fact that it is a mere 10 minutes walking distance from my house (and pretty much anywhere else around the State Street area) makes it a favorite of mine when I am in a crunch. I don't find the prices exorbitant or the selection particularly limited. So long as it is bigger than my pantry and there is a large enough selection of ice cream flavors, I am a happy camper. :) read more

I love going to capitol market, if you are in the downtown area and need an ingredient capitol market is the place to go. The have ready to eat warm/cold food available for lunch which is perfect if you need something quick and easy. They have fruits and veggies but they are more expensive than usual and you have to eat them right away or they will go bad quickly. They also have a large selection of alcohol. Definitely visit if you get the chance. read more

Cap Center is a pretty good grocery store, in a really convenient location. It's true that their prices are high (reasonable for downtown Madison, but a bit higher than the rest of Wisconsin), and their produce selection is modest. They have a friendly staff and they participate in Fetch Rewards, so you can end up with a pretty good deal. read more

Great little market in downtown Madison, and newly remodeled. Larger produce area and large deli in the back with fresh sushi. Lots of baked goods in addition to fresh on the go meals such as sandwiches or pasta. Has most everything you would need in a grocery store at decent prices (compared to other downtown competitors). This store has a decent wine selection and a large beer cooler but no liquor. There is a ATM as you walk into the store. Most important- the parking lot is free to customers and almost always has open spots. read more

Cap. Centre is the closest grocery store to my apartment, so I come here when I don't feel like driving to buy food. This store is good for essentials and when I need to grab some last minute ingredients. It is very small, so they don't have a huge produce selection, which is disappointing. The small space also makes for an odd layout, which usually results in me running into other shoppers or workers. But! They do have some of the best sour gummy worms I have ever had in their bulk section. I'm 27, I swear. Overall, I like Cap. Centre. It has what I need and I am willing to put up with the small layout because they have a friendly staff and their prices for the same products sold at other stores are much cheaper. read more

Went to CCM tonight to get a few things for dinner a friends.. namely Puppy Chow (you know that chex, peanut butter, chocolate, powdered sugar goodness) bc they always have it. Couldn't find it. Ask someone at the register and was directed to the deli. Could find it.. although perhaps I could've looked better. Then appears Kevin J, fresh off a break and ready to assist. He combs the store with us and finally finds it.. even after our protests that 'it wasn't that big of a deal'. This place is miserable. From a business perspective, they are geniuses. If I could open a supermarket in the middle of a college campus, with a 100% markup and mediocre quality, I suppose I would. No "public" restrooms for customers. I realize not ever place needs to have an easily accessible restroom, but not even one for customers is pretty ridiculous (I did ask, and the answer was "no public restrooms"--so I put down what I was going to purchase and decided to patronize elsewhere). Other than that the store is tight but has good variety and decent prices. The aisles are quite small and thus I didn't feel this place is handicap accessible. Look, we all know why we come here. It's the closest grocery store for those who live and work on the Isthmus, and we are willing to pay for that convenience. Woodmans is great but... what if I don't need 200 rolls of toilet paper? Or I'm too lazy to go that far? As if it weren't convenient enough, Cap Centre offers a delivery service, free of charge, for purchases over $40. (Excluding alcohol of course. Shucks.) For those willing to risk it, you can even buy your groceries online, and never set foot in the store. Those without a car might find this feature particularly attractive. Any gripe I might have about the prices being a SMIDGE high, is offset by the uber-convenience of free delivery. Once in a while they goof something a little bit, (missing a bag or once I got a bag of someone else's frozen goods) but with a quick phone call they fix it right up. Another price offset: They offer a weekly store deal, whereby you receive their free bonus item with a purchase of $20 or more. This keeps me in a steady supply of paper towels, frozen bagels, etc. When I was a student, I also took advantage of their 5% student discount on Wednesdays. To their credit, for being a small store they have a pretty decent selection. Not amazing, especially in the produce aisle, but they seem to put some effort into ordering local items, international cuisine items, and what my boyfriend calls "hippie foods." They have a walk-in beer cooler with both local, domestics and international brews, as well as reasonable mid-range wine selection. Don't forget local dairy! Snap up some Sassy Cow Creamery chocolate milk while you are there, if they haven't sold out. But my favorite stop is of course the cheese island, which often features a number of locally produced favorites. (Though sometimes at a not insignificant price hike.) Mmmmm, Espresso Bellavitano... it sits so near to the coffee aisle that I imagine the cheese and coffee staring longingly at one another, begging me to unite them. No problem, little buddies! A little high priced on certain items, but the convenience of delivery, location, and generally friendly, helpful staff make this a 4-star grocery nook. Stop by the library a block down the road on your way! Books and food are a match made in heaven. read more

Best grocery store in Downtown Madison. They're open 24 hrs, they're a fair price compared to Madison Fresh Market, and they're super close to a lot of college housing outside of the campus dorm areas! I love making late-night trips and getting decent deals here on certain days. They even help walk my bags to my apartment with me when I have to buy a ton! I love living so close to this store. As the reviews point out there is a lot to be desired with this particular store, but the store certainly provides a good service to the area especially those of us residing in such places as: Metropolitan Place Condos and residential properties in close proximity. The store has great hours and the food selection is good most of the time, but the customer service leaves a bit to be desired especially the customer service desk. On Monday December 07, 2015 I witnessed what I consider the most flagrant disregard for the customer, the woman working at the service desk was not at all professional and down right nasty with the customer she was assisting or should have been assisting. This transpired about ten in the evening and the gentleman came in to cash in a receipt from the proceeds his class had collected for their project and he presented the woman with the document and she couldn't have been any meaner or nastier to the customer. I happen to know the man very well, he has taught in our school system for many many years and happens to be very nice, but the treatment the woman at the desk rendered was absolutely unacceptable. I thought perhaps she didn't care for Blacks/African Americans, but she appears to be Black or mixed with Black, lets hope that this wasn't the case then again you just never know. The store isn't bad, but that woman would and has steered customers in a different direction. She shouldn't be working in customer service or with or alongside humans. read more

Open 24 hour Monday-Friday. Well stocked and friendly staff. Wednesday students get 5% off. They also deliver. Great if you walked or have a bike that you can't fit it all in. They also carry Greenbush Bakery 's apple fritters and other donuts. Yeah there packaged put still awesome if in a pinch. Also great deals every week. Always a deal if you spend more then $20 you get a free item (dozen eggs, milk, ice cream, etc). Great selection for the size of store. read more

Ding-ding-ding!! Capitol Centre Market "Serving Downtown Madison since 1983" served me well in 2013. This was exactly the grocery store I was looking for, and where I will be buying my groceries. The selection wasn't enormous but satisfying enough. I had options between name- and off-brands and it felt shopped -- it wasn't crazy busy when I was there, but people were coming in and out; it felt like a real grocery store (and it is haha). I was extremely pleased with the fresh produce, cheese, yogurt, and meat selection. I made a delicious beef stir fry with porta bella mushrooms for dinner with my purchases. Prices were higher than going to Hy-Vee or even Copp's, but I honestly thought my total would be closer to $200 and it was only $60. Blame my bad math or applaud my deal-savvy shopping but I totally impulsed shopped. Nutella and Odwalla bars can attest to that. I noticed a good amount of organic products in the produce and cereal sections (hooray Puffin cereal!!), which Cap Centre does advertise. I also really enjoyed the atmosphere. The employees went about their business but were polite when needed. The cashier who bagged my groceries could've saved some trees but he didn't put cans on top of my fruit or bread - that's all I really ask. (And I guess I could've saved some trees by not asking for paper and/or remembering to bring my own reusable grocery bags). For no-car-lives-around-the-Capitol, this is a great grocery store. As a grocery store addict I can't give this place 5 stars simply because of lack of selection, however the prices are great. I can go in here and spend much less than I would have somewhere else. However if you're looking for something specific and slightly unusual, you probably won't find it here. Staff is always super friendly though! And the produce is great quality. read more
