My son and his wife had their Christmas holiday dinner catered from here. It wax beyond fabulous. They had a prime rib and a spiral ham. The rib was cooked to perfection and the ham was moist , which isn't usually the case with spiral sliced hams. They had Mac and cheese and mashed potato. I'm sure it wasn't cheap but it was worth it! This location is not the best in town. Shelves are frequently empty, especially on sale items, resulting in several rain check slips stacked in my car. The cashier's rarely get my two coupons entered properly which is another challenge to get customer service to fix the mistake. Overall for the few items I choose to buy here it frequently results in a stop at customer service to deal with their faults. read more

While Hy-Vee does have some things that I need, I find it pretty over priced compared to competing stores. However, I do want to appreciate the fact that they are employee owned and seem to treat their employees decently which could be a factor in the higher prices. So I will only take one star off. Other than that, I like Hyvee for its selection of items. I have difficulty finding certain things like buttermilk and disposable food containers at Aldis/Walmart that I like so I am often over in Hyvee to get those things as I bake a lot! I also like to make candy and candied things like grapes so I LOVE their selections in their candy aisle. Their candy aisle is pretty unique compared to other stores as well as their flower area and beauty area which has bath bomb selections! Regarding the atmosphere, it always pretty nice when I go. I have never had any issues with a product being missing/out of stock or an employee. 5/5 for the atmosphere. I also like that there's free samples for you to try, like the beef brisket I got to try today, and cute little food area where you can eat any of the prepared food you buy that they sell such as Chinese food and sushi. read more

Was visiting from SC and needed to pick up some groceries for dinner. It was early so I wanted to grab a cup of coffee and donuts. I asked if they had bagels but the bakery wasn't making them today so I ordered two cake style donuts. They were probably the best cake donuts I've had, better than Dunkin' Donuts original cake, donuts. They had a crispy outside with the perfect cake texture inside. I need to pick up some own pork chops. My wife likes the thin ones. The only ones they had was a large package of like eight chops. I only need four chops. They had some very thick chops so they cut those in half and it worked perfectly. Nice store. My only problem is I've never been in the store and I was fighting where everything was. But I was impressed with the produce and how well stocked it was and how friendly the employees were. Definitely a nice grocery store. read more

Poor pay, frequently changing people from full timeto parttime. After living in Iowa for over 20 years, we've came to really appreciate, and depend on, our local HyVee stores. They weren't the cheapest, but the selection was great, the help was friendly, and the value was consistent. Our experience with the Madison area HyVee stores, and particularly the E Washington store, was extremely disappointing. I ordered a birthday cake for my wife, because their cakes in IA were always great. We went to pick it up, along with some other groceries. Even with the HyVee app, we couldn't find several items that the store claimed to carry. I asked a couple of employees for help and each of them was rude and largely useless. Their meat selection was poor and the prices were higher than other area stores with better selection. The cake was a joke, the decorations were the bare minimum and the price was very high for what we got. Again, have since found much better cakes for less at other area stores. Our checkout experience pretty well sealed the fact that we won't return. We were in a checkout line and were the next to check out when the person working the line told us that she was going to close and that we needed to go to another line, all of which were very long. She then left her register and just hovered at a counter a short distance away, watching people. We finally worked to the front of another line that was being run by a man with the title of "manager" on his name tag. He didn't great us at all, or talk to us. I mentioned to him that our overall experience was disappointing and he just looked at me and said "oh". No apologies, no inquiry, nothing. We took the cake home and I added some decorations to it. But, the cake wasn't even close to what we were used to from the Iowa stores. I responded to the HyVee survey that I got and, again, no follow up or response. We've now moved on to other area grocery stores and won't be back to HyVee. read more

I tell myself every time ai order from Hyvee on East Wash, never again. I ordered my grandsons birthday cake, Pick it up and his name was wrong. They did a so so job of fixing it. Party time, put candles on the cake and realize it's says Happy 3rd Birthday instead of Happy 5th Birthday. Cake was dry, had little flavor and the flavor it did have was not good. Price on cakes have increased significantly while quality has went right down the drain. Save yourself frustration and wasted money. Go somewhere else for your special occasion cakes! read more

Typical giant grocery store. Not a bad place to buy very basic mass market packaged food -- cereal, chips, and so on. Like most giant grocery stores, checking the expiration dates on perishable food is a must. Finding expired items is not difficult. With an entire refrigerated case filled with sour cream, of all things, this isn't surprising that product doesn't move before it goes bad, but that's how it works when there's a big ole store to fill. Maybe stock more Organic Valley milk so it isn't out of stock every other visit? I don't know, I'm not a grocery store manager -- maybe that's a terrible idea. Like most giant grocery stores, items are arranged not in ways that make them easy to find, but in ways that encourage more buying. If you want cheese, for example, there are at least three places to look. Seafood department isn't good. Not only is general freshness an issue, but the greenwashing is inexcusable. Signs everywhere proclaim that "100% of Hy-Vee seafood is responsibly sourced" but they offer seafood items that are not -- the bottom trawled Argentine shrimp caught my attention. read more

General Grocery Meh. I tend to do a large amount of my grocery shopping at Hy-Vee but I'm never excited about it. That may sound silly, but there are definitely other grocery stores where I look forward to shopping and feel excited to get into all my snacks. During covid, the shopping experience is ok -- In general, people keep their distance but there are occasions where other shoppers or even staff will squeeze by to grab an item. Hot/Cold Prepped Food Meh. The selection available is pretty wide, from hot chicken wings to quinoa salads, but in my opinion none of the food tastes very good. The flavor is lacking heavily and other grocery stores have better hot food options for sure. Hy-Vee Online Love! This has been a great convenience during the past few months. The online shopping experience is really easy and I appreciate the free delivery options. You can also pay $9.99 to get the groceries even quicker. I have ordered a ton of times online and mostly had no issues. In the rare case when an item has been forgotten (I believe this has happened twice out of many times), the store will deliver for free. The only improvement I can think of is if shoppers could see items out of stock online, because sometimes I make an order and up to 10 items are out of stock. But otherwise, I love the online system. Post Office Boo. In theory, having a USPS at the grocery store should be the height of convenience. You can have a one stop shop where you get groceries AND get stamps or send any packages you need to. But so often when I come to Hy-Vee there is some issue with their post office. I once waited in a long line only to get to the front to find out that the package scale was not working so they couldn't send anything out. Sometimes there will only be one or two people ahead in line but it will take forever because of random issues. It's not a reliable USPS at all. read more

I went there to pick up my med up & the guy was so rude & only gave me half the order but at least he charged me the right price. I go back to get my meds again & he charging me double the price i can tell he has an attitude so I just left. I call the store on the west side & they told me the correct price & doesn't know why he's doing that. I goes back & he does it again so I called them back so they can tell him what to do. he didn't like that & now mad with an attitude taking mess but I told him that this ain't my first time coming to the store for my meds. the store and products themselves were good. but, the cashier was rude. there was zero interaction from when she began scanning my food items to her asking me to pay. there was no one to bag my groceries, despite the other lanes having baggers. i realized i needed to bag my own groceries, as all the items were piled up at the end of the lane. she finished scanning the groceries, then stood there & looked around, waiting for me to finish bagging my own groceries - instead of helping me or making any sort of polite gesture. very disappointed as i haven't been to Hyvee in years. read more

I had a cart that came to $49 and some odd cents. I wanted to add a candy bar to it to meet the minimum and the clerk wold not allow it. Hyvee is my favorite grocery store in the Madison area! It has such a wide variety of items including a large health and wellness section. Wellness items are even 10% off on Wednesdays! The store is very organized and clean. Hy-Vee offers a large variety of meats, seafoods, produce, and local cheeses. They also have a great selection of pre-made foods! They've taken the pandemic very seriously. They've put acrylic barriers up between each self check out station, Arrows on the floors, and closed any salad and olive bars. The employees are frequently cleaning each machine as well. Love Hy-Vee!! read more

Items not delivered, orders left on the ground outside (even though I specified I'm disabled and need to have them brought up to my unit - and tipped very well for the service)., calls to management that went nowhere. This review is specifically for the Bakery department at Whitney Way in Madison. I went in for a catering, tasting 6/23/23 I wanted to order my cake through Hyvee as while for my wedding, so I stopped in to talk to their bakery. They provided me a tasting kit (6/25/23) and told me to call to schedule a decoration meeting after tasting the cakes. I called today to request another tasting kit my kit was accidentally eaten by family and the manager whom I talked too 6/23/23 and agreed she could do it completely refused to make my wedding cake after saying she could stating they are they are understaffed. She didn't know that 3 days ago when my sister picked up the taste kit ! Calling a manager to report this! read more

It's been awhile since I've been in this location, and it looks like they added quite a few items to their hot foods/bakery/prepared items line-up. I generally don't go to Hyvee because I've had terrible luck with their store brand (truly one of the worst pizzas I've ever tasted), but they do shine in their fresh foods. On my most recent visit I ordered several bakery and deli items ahead and paid online. There's a parking space for grocery pick-up with a phone number you can call to presumably have them deliver items straight to your car. I'd never done pick-up before so I opted to go inside. Staff were quick to get my items and double-checked everything was right. The person who helped me in the bakery was especially great and carried my items over to the cart and asked if it was okay to stack them before doing so. I made a quick swing over to their liquor department and the cashier was kind enough to help me pick a wine to go with my order; I'm not a wine drinker so I had no idea what was an appropriate pairing. Next time I don't feel like cooking but feel too guilty to order delivery I'll have to take a swing back through this Hyvee. read more

I often frequent the high-priced grocery store. They have many different options to choose from their hot bar as well as the cold bar. I particularly like their Napa Valley chicken cashew salad. This salad is delightful. It's high-priced so I don't get it often but when I do it never disappoints. No one else sells it. Otherwise if they did that's where I go to get it. My HyVee experience today at the salad bar, was one I wished didn't happen. No I generally only shop at HyVee on the west side and Fitchburg because I live that way, I happen to be on the east side tonight. A gentleman had just served the lady who ordered chicken it seemed to be no issue there. I walk up he walks away, maybe he didn't see me. And that's fine, I waited for him to come back. After he came back I told him exactly what I wanted he proceeded to get a bowl with no gloves and to serve me my chicken salad as ask for. Then he got a top still no gloves to put a top on top of the chicken he served me with no gloves. Then he handed it to me and said have a good day. I have two issues, one when he noticed me he had a mop and the mop bucket in his hand. Two he had on no gloves. Serving food! With no gloves! What in tarnation is this?!?! Needless to say I will never return to this HyVee. And that gentleman needs to be fired. If this level of service is okay at the HyVee on East Washington in Madison that I never want to shop at Hyvee again on the east side on East Washington in Madison Wisconsin. Who trains these people? I started coming here when they opened. I typically would come for their lunches (Chinese food and hot/salad bar). They also have a restaurant/bar inside. The hot bar is $9.99/lbs; the salad bar is a little less and most times what I go for, especially if it's Fish Fry Friday. The people that work there are very nice, so I give them 4 stars for that. The store has a lot of things in one place, like a coffee shop, a catering service, groceries, plants and floral arrangements, a restaurant and a bar. But those amenities probably are probably the reason for higher prices (compared to other nearby grocery stores). read more

This is my favourite grocery store in the Madison area that would fall under normal grocery stores. I like whole foods a lot more but they are specialised. Hy-Vee can have some really nice fresh produce, meat and seafood but once in a while it can be just a little blah too. The selection and freshness is however the best in the area for somewhere thats not organic. On my last visit I came home with 4 seperate times of fresh seafood which all tested nice. This visit it looked all Frozen, dry with very little selection. They do have a large selection of everything else across the store. Ive had some nice fresh produce here and other times it was tasteless. The meat is usually really good but thats also a hit and miss thing. I only gave it a 3/5 because I think all grocery store in the area have their own unique issues and Hy-Vee is no exception. The liquor store only has a handful of top notch wines. read more

All in all....it's a HyVee. I mean, there's not much of a difference when comparing this Hy-Vee to all the others that you've probably been to, but it's a pretty solid choice for the grocery stores in Madison. Great food selection but a little over priced when comparing to Woodman's in town. The produce selection is great and the hand rolled sushi is actually pretty good for being made in a grocery store. They will honestly make it from scratch as well if you ask. The deli has all that you'd want/ need and one of the perks within Hy-Vee is the gluten free section. I do not shop within this area but I have friends that will solely go to Hy-Vee for this because of their medical issues or the medical needs of their kids. My favorite part is probably the liquor store. That may sound bad but the wine selection is above average and the liquor selection has a lot of high end liquors to choose from. HyVee is by far my favorite grocery store in the Madison area. The produce section is fantastic. They have pre-made fruit and veggie platters of all sizes which is really handy when you're in a hurry. I've never had an issue with the freshness of these products, either. Always appear to be super fresh, bright, and delicious. The hot food section, salad bar, catering area is amazing. I got here for lunch sometimes and just hit the salad bar. They also have a hot food bar with a whole assortment of things. Occasionally we swing through here when we need a quick dinner. They have pizza, Chinese, sushi, comfort food.. it's never ending! They also have these types of food available cold so you can take them home and reheat. The actual grocery store is great and has a HUGE selection. They have a decent international foods section featuring Chine, Japan, England, Italy, and a couple more. The organic/gluten free/vegetarian/vegan section is really large by comparison to other chain groceries. Usually you don't find a lot of that stuff without going to a specialty grocery store or coop. The aisles are almost always neat and organized and all the employees are super friendly and helpful. Also, I have ordered catering from HyVee numerous times. Nothing but raving reviews from everyone who has been able to try. My office LOVES when HyVee comes for a catered event. read more

I've been a customer ever since this location opened. In-store experience is good. However, their delivery and pickup service is sub par. I recently had an awful customer experience. Frequently I've had issues with their delivery and pickup service (wrong items, poor packing, wrong packing materials...). This last time, the delivered someone else's groceries to me. Then they wouldn't send my groceries to me that night because it's Aisles online closed. Eventually the aisles manager of the evening said they would gather up my order items so that I could pick them up and would call me when it was ready. I waited an hour and called back to see if it was ready. That person went home without telling anyone or calling me back without getting my order ready. I had plans that I postponed and eventually cancelled because of that. I needed those groceries. I have health issues - I rely on reliable delivery services. The next day I contacted corporate and then they contacted the store to get my order delivered. They delivered the order, and still got it wrong! I actually paid for their Plus Membership for better service. It's worthless. They blamed Door Dash for the problems (not all of it is Door Dash's fault). But I have no control over Door Dash. I'm not an account holder. From Door Dash's point of view, Hy-Vee is the customer not me. Hy-vee contracts Door Dash to deliver. The Hy-vee employee even told me that Door Dash is unreliable and said I shouldn't use them. I've already reached out to Door Dash telling them that Hy-Vee just threw them under the bus. Hy-Vee has not done anything to make this right. They've lost a customer. I cannot recommend them. I will not recommend them. (And I help organize corporate events -we've used them in the past, but will no longer). This is the worst customer experience I have ever had. This is close to my house, so I find myself here ... But less and less often. The prices are high compared to Woodmans or the Pig. Selection is limited, except for buffet food. Parking is tough, with tight stalls. The liquor selection is meager. But above all else, the most frustrating problem is layout. Want pasta? It's in four different areas all across the store. Same with many other staples. I will put things in my cart, find a better brand for a different price six isles away. I get it ... Some is health food, others ethnic, others organic, others normal. Shopping shouldn't be a game of concentration. I just want food, not the puzzle of food rubic cube. Did I mention they charge more for this special experience? read more

I grew up in Iowa and never truly appreciated how lucky I was to have such a great grocery store chain to shop at. When I moved here to Madison, I couldn't believe how awful the stores were. Copps, Cub Foods, and Woodman's? Terrible. Seriously. Now, don't get me wrong - I love Trader Joe's and the Co-op, but I can't afford to shop there all the time. I need a good store with quality produce, meat, pizza, baked goods, and a good selection of booze - Hy-Vee is that store. Other positives: the store is well lit, clean and organized, properly staffed (this is huge), has a nice health market, and even their deli and chinese food is tasty. Cheap and tasty breakfast, too. Oh, how could I forget... they have pretty darn good donuts. Maybe it is just because I grew up with them and they taste exactly like I remember, but when they are fresh in the morning they are pretty fantastic. I would probably stick with the standard glazed or chocolate, but the rest are decent as well. Good stuff! read more
