THIS IS A COMPLAINT. MAKE NO MISTAKE ABOUT IT.

I just came home from a visit to my local Piggly Wiggly on 421 Cottage Grove Road, Cottage Grove, WI. My family and I frequent this store more times a week than I can count ... they are only a few blocks away. I ran over for a few items and entered the store, of course the door was open and I didn't realize they were getting ready to close. I took a cart and went to the far right of the store, then to the back where soda is located, grabbed 3 2-bottles. Walked over to the cheese cooler and grabbed 4 packages of sliced cheese. All seemed normal as I made my way to the ice cream section.
So, you see, I was in the store in plenty of time FOR THE STAFF UP FRONT TO MAKE AN ANNOUNCEMENT OVER THE P.A. SYSTEM. "The store is being closed, please bring your items to the front." NOPE. NOTHING. Instead, these fools turned off the lights in the store. Yep, I was suddenly in the dark and I was taken by complete surprise. AND STILL NO WORDS WERE ANNOUNCED, SHOUTED, OR SPOKEN. Nope. Your customer, a 72-year-old customer, was standing in the dark at the ice cream cooler.
I shouted, "HELLO! HELLO! as I nearly ran with the cart as fast as my old legs could carry me. HELLO! HELLO! Still no answer.
As I reached the very front of the aisles, getting close to the checkout, I met a young employee. I said I didn't realize you were closing! He said that's okay, I'm just making sure you are the last one in the store." I rushed to the checkout counter where he directed me; he checked me out. No words, really ... certainly no comforting words or, GOD FORBID, an apology. That's when I saw there were at least 4 other employees up front, and one was a lady whose faced I recognized as a manager or asst. manager. No word from her. No word from freakin ANYONE. And I my heart was beating wildly, and I was rushing like never before in a store.
The employees, BUT ESPECIALLY THAT MANAGER, were apathetic, rude and unfeeling. No manners. No empathy for a customer who was clearly in a distressed state. No words of any kind.
I, for one, will be heading down the street to another grocery store next time. read more
