I've been going to this store for years and never had an issue until today. I walked in and not one clerk acknowledged me. In fact the whole time I was in the store they were chatting about their personal lives. I stood there waiting to ask if I could use a dressing room - and it was like I was interrupting them. In a rude tone of voice the clerk said "sure, but we are closing" which wasn't for another 15 minutes. As I stepped in the room she grabbed the curtain in an aggressive manner. I told the manager what happened as it was such a rude experience. And btw I bought my clothing within 5 minutes to spare before closing. I now understand why more people just buy online. I'm a business owner and I would have fired my employee for this type of behavior. read more

I went to this location yesterday wanting to buy a sweater I had seen online. There were clerks throughout the store merchandizing - two behind the counter. Not one of them acknowledged me, greeted me, or asked if I needed help. I wandered around trying to look at things even though they were busy and standing where I was trying to look. Even then no contact what so ever from anyone. I finally asked one if she knew if a sweater I wanted was available in another size. She said it wasn't and I never heard another word The absolute worst customer service ever ! read more

After driving past this store for years, my friend and I decided to stop in one Saturday when we were shopping local, getting to know our own City better. Turns out Madewell has been in the corner of NW 12th and Couch for 4 years. The store has a neutral palette and clean lines which is aligned with the clothes they sell. It felt familiar, and so of course we did a Google search, which revealed that Madewell's parent company is J. Crew. They are trying to redefine their brand and targeting a younger demographic. The store was loaded with jeans, mostly the skinny leg type. Not my thing. I did find a gorgeous leather motorcycle jacket, but the $495 price tag made me do in immediate catch and release! In addition to the denim bar, there were boxy sweaters, t-shirts for layering, a small collection of accessories (jewelry, bags, shoes) and even a small selection of gift items. I'm not the right demographic for this shop, nothing other than the jacket caught my eye. But for the younger crowd who likes classic denim and classic clothes, this is your brand. The staff at this location are soooo helpful. I basically only buy Madewell jeans because I'm a tall woman (5'9') and I'm an hourglass. It's hard to find jeans that fit me at my waist and are long enough to cover my ankle. Madewell jeans do the trick. Are they expensive? Yep. Are they worth it? Yep. Plus, you're supporting a shop that treats its employees well and doesn't own sweat shops. They are the furthest thing from fast fashion. I read more

Madewell opened their Brewery Blocks location in SW Portland just off of 12th and Burnside May 1st, 2014. Wuh-woh!! I'm in trouble with this store! Everything is so soft, so cool, and so so lovely. Madewell is my go - to shop for denim, and has been for years! However, at this particular location the customer service tuned me off to the brand entirely. I purchased a pair of jeans from this particular store and two weeks later, they ripped. I totally get that this happens to thinner denim and specific styles, no big deal. However, madewell is known to be pricey because of their quality denim. I have no issue paying for quality. In this case, I was a little disappointed so decided to call the store to see if there was anything they could do before making the trip downtown. The associate on the phone was kind and helpful and told me to come to the store. Two days later, I came in the store and let them know my situation and was immediately given attitude by the manager and felt dismissed. I get it, it was 7pm and the day is almost finished. We all work long days. But honestly, after negotiating with her I got to exchange my jeans for a new pair. That isn't my issue. After we figured out a solution, the sales associates and manager completely ignored me and acted as if I was a bother when asking for help. I saw that someone else wrote that they felt they were treated poorly because of their appearance upon entry, and I feel the same. I had a long day of house work and cleaning, so dressing up to run an errand wasn't ideal. I left with a negative impression and felt completely disrespected and judged ??? All I know is I don't want to spend money somewhere that treats customers like this. read more

"Managers" Jill or Trina, either way, doesn't matter - one of you was a witness. Elitist white women will always make others second guess or question themselves over policies their employer sets with space for selective accommodation to make them feel powerful. I called the Bridgeport location to ask about their exchange policy after seeing that the 12th Ave. location might be closed (it's election week). I received a pair of pants as a gift and have been dreading going in to exchange them for the risk of this exact experience. No receipt. No email. I get it - I was in an unlikely situation, but to make sure I didn't waste their time and mine. When I called Bridgeport and spoke to Kacey and asked if it was possible to exchange these pants of which still had tags attached, she said yes. She told me to call 12th Ave. first because they might be open regardless of what Maps was stating. It turned out they were open and I drove over. Upon arrival, a nice associate took my pants, I explained my situation, and she seemed to understand I didn't have "proof of purchase" - which I mentioned a couple of times. She told me I could get a gift card with store credit if they did not have what I needed at the store. She guided me around, showed me potential pants that would be a good fit, and then helped me find the correct size. This whole thing took about 30-35 minutes and when I was ready to exchange my pants, another woman took over my transaction, said they couldn't exchange them without proof of purchase, and asked if the other woman knew about it. Stutters, uncertainty.. I think she was scared to mention anything. Then, another woman stepped up (blonde hair, beige sweater) - I wanted to avoid her at all costs since my arrival. She is the type of manager that makes you feel stupid immediately if you don't fit the white rich profile. For instance, when I walked inside the store, I stood in front of the register with more than 6 feet of space. She told me where I should be standing in a condescending tone while I found myself APOLOGIZING to her for simply not knowing as I had not walked around to know. As soon as she became involved in the transaction, she repeated what the cashier had said, to which I responded with my experience from calling the Bridgeport location. She said "oh, haha, noooo, you must have not told them the right information. They must have been confused. The information must have gotten mixed up. Nope. Can't return without proof of purchase. Nope. Sorry." All in a condescending tone, all without room to explain. See the thing is, I understand some information can get displaced and mixed up.. but I called the store for a reason. There is a witness to my word. This is the exact reason I sought that information - I left and then called Bridgeport. I spoke to Kacey again and she asked for my name and wanted to call the 12th Ave store to tell them to accommodate my transaction, but I could not find it in myself to go back in there. I felt so wronged. I trust myself. I know I asked for the right information and knew it was unlikely to get the pants exchanged, but THEY told me it COULD be done. And guess what? It WAS done. I drove to Bridgeport and they exchanged my pants. That is what prompted me to write this. These types of managers are the reason it is difficult to shop around and feel comfortable. I am not their demographic. I do not look like them. I am a Hispanic woman and my body and features do not look like their models or even their staff... but that SHOULD not matter. I am stating these components here because I KNOW what this looks and tastes like as I have seen it all my life. No one gets to tell me my experience is invalid. And if they want to pull the "Oh I didn't even know she was a person of color" or whatever, it does NOT matter. Innate racism exists and microaggressions are probably in your field of "power" through these pointless transactions in a retail world. Consider who is placed in positions of "power." read more

After selling everything I own to leave and travel the world, I returned to the US with nothing but grubby clothes, worn shoes, and a desire to reinvent my style. My sister and I spent the day shopping and by the end, were completely empty-handed with nothing to show for it. Until Madewell. Penelope and all the other girls made me feel so comfortable and helped me craft a wardrobe that was functional, stylish, and uniquely me. Although I was hitting it Pretty Woman style and blowing all my money in one store ("big mistake, BIG!"), I noticed that all the lovely sales staff were super helpful to everyone -- not compromising time or attention for other customers just because I was buying a lot. And boy did I buy a lot. Shoes, scarves, jeans, jewelry, socks, sweaters...I literally built my capsule wardrobe in one fell swoop. Penelope came up with everything I wanted and some things I didn't know I needed. While some sales people will bring you items that you absolutely would never wear, she managed to push the envelope on my comfort zone just enough -- without getting too crazy or outside my personal sense of style. Madewell has a lovely mix of foundational wardrobe items with some interesting statement pieces here and there. A high-end boutique shopping experience without the price tag. read more

I give this location 3 stars. I love the company and product however I didn't feel the customer service was great. Everyone seemed to be in their own world and this happens each time I have shopped here. I can in no way for their clothes but I love the handbags and accessories. Really glad I gave madewell another chance because this was the best customer experience I have ever received. After shopping at Anthropologie I saw that there was a madewell here. My first madewell experience was dull and uninviting. This time I was greeted by all of the staff. My goal was to try on one pair of jeans and I ended up leaving with three jeans and a bunch of sale tops. Honestly I didn't think I was going to spend any money here. I had a pleasure meeting amber and she gave me a fun styling experience. She picked three jeans and even guessed my size without me telling her. She completed the looks with tops she grabbed from.sale and showed me how to dress the outfits and even wear it in the fall. So glad I gave madewell another chance. Shop with Amber! She's nice and easy to talk to. Every store needs an Amber. I'll be back with my daughter and friends for a shopping party! read more

I love their clothes and am a big fan of their skinny skinny denim collection so you know I won't be leaving the store empty handed. The space is bright & roomy and everything was displayed nicely. My only dissatisfaction was the lack of service I received. No one greeted me or said hi while I was browsing and I had to hunt someone down for the dressing room. I have been meaning to buy a nice pair of jeans for a while now. I decided one day after work to shop around downtown, and first went into Free People. I found a perfect pair of jeans, but they were extremely spendy. Since my goal was to go to Madewell anyways, I passed on the jeans and headed over. I've had great service in the store the times I went prior to my last visit, but had less personalized care because I was just looking, or buying small things, like socks. (Their socks are great by the way). This times, I grabbed a ton of jeans and they quickly asked if they could start a fitting room for me. When I finally went in, the employee hleping me kept checking up to see how I was doing. When I told her I had the wrong sizes, she brought me the right ones, along with jeans she thought I might like based on the ones I had already picked out. When the size was too big again, she brought me two more sizes, in jeans she thought I might like. I'm sad I didn't get her name to give her s shout out, but ultimately the pair of jeans I ended up buying were not much cheaper than the ones at Free People, but the service really sold them for me. Customer service was great until I got to the register today. I was inquiring about a jeans trade-in deal and the response was incredibly rude. When I completed my purchase, the sales girl shoved the bag at me and looked to the next person in line. Nope, not even a "thanks". Now, I'm very considerate towards folks who work in sales & service positions because I do too. And I totally understand how crazy it can get when it's a busy weekend! Usually I like this madewell fine. The employees are pretty average and some of them are really helpful. However the two times (out of probably 50+ trips I've made there where I purchased items) I tried to return unworn / unwashed (only tried things on) items they made a huge deal about how I DEFINITELY had worn or washed the items. Yeah, I had not. Basically the employees are trained to not let you make any returns. I had to go through online customer service to work things out. read more

Madewell is my go-to brand but the customer service at this specific store leaves much to the desire. I have been to multiple Madewell locations in Colorado, California, Bridgeport in Portland and this place has unexpectedly the worst service of all. No one acknowledges me during the pretty significant amount of time I was there (thrice) and no one offers to help me get a fitting room when seeing that I have items on my hand. To top it off, when I used the student discount on my purchase today, RAVEN, the cashier at the counter treated me like I was receiving charity: pushing the bag toward me without any "thank you" or eye contact. I volunteer often and I always acknowledge the people I serve. This is my last time visiting this store. I will keep to online shopping or in Denver where the staff consistently KNOWS customer service. read more

I have long been a lover of Madewell and have frequented the Manhattan and San Francisco branch for the past several years. I was super excited to see that a Madewell had finally arrived in Portland! The clothing is as lovely as ever and I find myself stopping in often. That said, on repeated occasions I have found the employees to be less than helpful. I find it funny when asked who helped me at the check out counter because again and again my answer is no one. For a shop that clearly must work on commission it seems odd that the employees are so "out to lunch" I will continue to frequent the store because of the clothing but I truly dislike the costumer service. This stands in contrasts to the other madewell shops I have visited which tend to have a much more engaging and energetic staff. read more

By far one of my favorite stores. I have been a frequent online shopper of Madewell for quite some time, but am SO excited they finally have a Portland location. Although is isn't a small local boutique, they still make great quality clothing that is right up my alley. Plus, they do bring in some jewelry from local designers which is really awesome and gives the big box store a local flare. Every time I go in the store I find something I love. All the ladies that work there are alway so nice and willing to help out with whatever; fitting room, style advice, finding sizes. The last time I went to the store I was returning a shirt I had washed by hand, per the instructions, and it shrunk and became crooked. It was odd, especially since the quality is always so good. They're customer service was great. I was afraid they may not return it since it was worn and washed, but I had no problem. I found another item to replace my shirt and was on my way.
