This store has cute clothes but their sales tactics have made it so that I won't shop there anymore. The first few times I went in I quickly found some clothes I wanted to try on and they were helpful and started a dressing room for me. Each time as I was trying things on, they brought me more things they "thought I'd like", which I looked at and politely declined. This last time, I was just browsing and a sales person came up to me with an armful of clothes she "thought would look great on me". She clearly just guessed my size and preferences which is a pushy sales tactic I do not enjoy. I said no thank you and left. I won't be back. Fashion boutique with nice clothes and accessories. Bought someone a nice faux leather fanny pack here. It began tearing at the stitching shortly after. We brought it back next visit but no longer had the tag or receipt (we had other proofs of purchase) and they were struggling to find it in their system. However, they decided to exchange it. Love this clothing store except for their return policy. Absolutely ridiculous that it is so short and only store credit. I know it's local but at least give 30 days. Every time I visit Portland I always make a stop here. The pieces I've purchased at this boutique have been closet favorites of mine. Great styles and selections that don't break the bank. I get why they have a strict return policy -- as a small business owner managing returns is a nightmare. At least they have an exchange policy. Great service, the people who work there are so helpful and kind. They almost act like personal shoppers. I feel very special when I shop there and that's a rare experience for a low income person. My only gripes are that a lot of the clothes are not eco friendly, i wish they would focus on that more with their inventory. Also many of them are way overpriced for what they are. $40 for t shirts? This is a cute boutique with a variety of lovely clothing that is not size inclusive. Everything I tried or was interested in wasn't available in my size. What's my size? I am a fit, healthy, 40-something women who is most comfortable in 12-14. A very common size and shape for an adult woman. I have made peace with my body, but sadly many shops have not come as far. I tried on two dresses, two blouses and two sweaters here in size Large. All of them *almost fit*. The first dress was gorgeous and I was so excited! But when I asked if I could try an XL, the response was a somewhat frosty and unapologetic "Um, it doesn't come in that size..." I was polite and said what a bummer it was since I loved the clothing, and was again met with about the equivalent of a disinterested shrug. After repeating this disappointment and the embarrassment of having to come out of the dressing room asking for the next size up, I politely said something along the lines of "You know women my size and age often have good money to spend on clothing!" and they curtly said "It's the clothing brand, they just don't make sizes over large". Yes, but YOU stock your shelves. YOU choose your vendors. Why not partner with brands that include all bodies in their designs? Or at least up to an XL!? I would have easily spent $500 on myself alone at Sloan, not to mention stuff for my teenage daughter, but instead I left feeling defeated, disappointed, and fighting off feelings of shame and exclusion. Stocking a wide ranges of sizes and treating full-figured women with dignity and kindness isn't just good for business, it's the right thing to do. Like others have said, their return policy is unreasonable. It 1000% makes me want to shop elsewhere. They carry Free People and other common brands that you could get elsewhere without the contingency. I do not like to return things and always make a point to try on in store, but sometimes there are just plain exceptions. I purchased $120 jumpsuit less than 24 hours ago and wasn't able to return after realizing at home that the color completely washes me out. I think we all understand you can't compare a small business to larger corporations - but geez, they offer zero flexibility. However, i do appreciate that they don't give you a gift card to keep track of but put the balance on your account. read more

Sloan has a great combination of fun day to day items, and a few more upscale items like Kensie. I don't think i'm entirely their demographic, as I typically look for more original items. I did however find an absolutely perfect sweater for my sister for Christmas. I can't wait to give it to her. She's going to LOVE it. The sales gals were friendly, the store is well lit, and clean. There were a few too many items on the racks, making it more difficult for someone like myself who has a short attention span. Overall very nice little shop. read more

So often Boutiques consist of: 1. limited amount of clothing on the racks 2. boring and uniform in style/color 3. made for 1 type of body and 4. exudes this kind of sophistry, which really means fallacious. I don't advise shopping in the store. Even though the clothing looks really cool and unique- Quite a bit of it is low-quality. Today I shopped there, in middle of a transaction I noticed that the sweater I was purchasing had a snag in it. When I told her I didn't want to buy it she said sorry we don't do returns. She said she would make an exception. when I made a big deal of insisting on the refund. But she then continue to rebuke me, telling me this was a one time deal only. I don't think that's very good customer service. (By the way, she did find me another sweater but it too was snagged). The salesperson was adamant that it was my responsibility to make sure the clothing was not defective. What?! I won't be shopping here again. read more

I've been shopping at Sloan Boutique for years. Almost everything fits me in the store, and the salespeople are so incredible at what they do. I'll try one thing on, but then they'll suggest a whole bunch of other things that work so well! They'll also stop if you tell them to, but I really enjoy the attention and the suggestions. I always go in with an open mind. Every time I got in they get better and better stuff. I stay away from the shoes there (I have feet that don't work with their selection) but I really love all of the clothing. A year ago one of the girls had me try on a jumpsuit, and it looked awesome! I would've never worn a jumpsuit before, and I wear it all the time now! This place makes you feel welcome and invited the moment you walk in. I find it hard to shop anywhere else for relatively affordable, quality items. I pair a lot of their stuff with more designer items and it works out really well. Three cheers for Sloan! Their other locations are just as good, but the Hawthorne location is my favorite! I'd reserve a couple of hours here to see what they have. I love the huge selection of very forward styles. I also love how flattering everything I bought are. I also love how friendly and helpful the staff are. However, I do not love how terrible the quality is for their price points! I've dropped nearly a thousand dollars on two visits here after having a baby and needing to rebuild my wardrobe. The money wasn't easy to part with but nothing I had fit anymore. I was so looking forward to wearing them throughout the coming seasons. Much to my dismay, just about everything I bought here have torn apart within the first six months! Not just in the seams but the fabric themselves, too. I love that Sloan usually seems to have the thing I am looking for and cannot find anywhere else. I think their target audience is much younger than me, but there is always something that will work for a more mature woman. Prices are on the high side, but it is worth it to find the season's "must-have". I do agree with another review that the sales staff can be pushy. They typically bring things to you as you are browsing as suggestions, and when you are in the dressing room they bring you more things. It can be a bit intense. I did have a weird experience there this week. As soon as I settled on one $75 item, the person helping me stopped being friendly and was terse. My girlfriends and I were wandering around Hawthorne and I'm so glad we randomly stumbled upon Sloan. I definitely did some damage here. No regrets. Make sure you have plenty of time reserved to go through all the racks. Sloan reminds me of my favorite boutiques in San Francisco: Cary Lane and Jeremy's. Sloan sells many different brands and styles ranging from Roxy to Free People. The clothing here is pretty fashion forward without being too trendy where you run the risk of the item going out of style the next season. I wasn't looking for anything in particular, but the girls here were super helpful and kept pulling outfits they thought fit my size and style. I end up walking away with 4 pieces for $250. Everything is pretty reasonably price and I was told they get new items three times a week. read more

Life, is dragging me kicking and screaming out of Forever 21. Be it my expanding waistline or the shame that settles over me like a thick fog while I shop amongst high schoolers, it has become abundantly clear it's time for me to move on. Sloan, bless them, has made this process easier on me. Sloan is fastly becoming my first stop when I'm looking for new clothes. I've said before that "boutique" is a word I generally consider short hand for "out of my price range". Sloan however is a boutique that does not break the bank. While I'm not buying $20 dresses like at Forever 21, I'm not spending that much more and I'm getting a much better quality product. Also hopefully I won't bump into a handful of teenagers wearing the same thing as me on a regular basis. You can find a lot of fashionable, interesting clothes for every type of ocsassion at very reasonable prices. I personally love their shoe section. I got a pair of awesome summer flats for under $40. I'm really on the fence about giving Sloan 4 or 5 stars. Ultimately, I landed on 4 because I can't always find a lot of things I like. In Sloans defense I am kind of boring dresser (See my wardrobe of solid earth colors and a few stripped items). I feel like they have a lot of trendy stuff which isn't really my cup of tea but I understand I'm the minority in that. I fancy myself a classic dresser. On the other side of the coin I love that this is an afforadable local store that sells great clothes with a lot of variety. So, you decide! A tip for the wise - Sign up for the newsletter. Sloan reminds me of Jeremy's or Ambiance in San Francisco. A compilation of various designers with clothing articles of all styles. Word of advice, make sure to come here with plenty of time to roam around and dig through items. I did, and I found some amazing pieces. Confession: I have recently decided that my wardrobe is currently more "girl-like" and less "woman-like," so I keep that in mind when shopping now. I want to find pieces that are sophisticated, grown up, but practical. In the end, I was able to walk away with two tops and a scarf (I'm a sucker for scarves), all for under $80. After spending nearly two hours looking for the perfect party dress for my upcoming birthday party, I found myself walking down Hawthorne empty handed. And right as I was about to give up all hope, a fashionable girl walking in the opposite direction thrusted a flyer in my hands. "20% off your entire purchase at Sloan," it read. I decided to give it a go. My husband & I walked in & were inundated with happy greetings & curious faces from the staff. I quickly scanned the floor to see what was happening in this space: shabby chic decor, clean, a little kitschy, & warm -- both in the friendly & temperature sense. It felt very. . . expensive, & right as I was turning to give my husband the We Cannot Afford To Breathe in This Place look, a perky, brown-haired girl approached us. "Hi!" she said eagerly. "Can I help you guys find anything?" Now, typically, when this question is asked to me I wave it off with a "No thanks, just looking," response, which, when delicately coded, translates into "Go away, kid, you bug me." But this time, I decided to see what this girl (& Sloan) was made of. "Yes," I started. "As a matter of fact, I'm looking for a party dress. My birthday is in a few days, & I'm having a little get together." "Ohhh!" the girl practically squealed, "How exciting! Well, you are in the right place! We have many dresses to choose from" (they absolutely did) "& I'd love to help you find the right one!" She then asked me all the important questions one asks when party dress shopping: Long or short? A-line or maxi? Sleeveless or strapless? Black or White? Matte or shimmery? And after I gave correct answers, she trotted off & began collecting dresses around the shop that fit the criteria. She even started a fitting room for me. I was impressed! Flabbergasted, actually, because no one had EVER taken the time to personalize my shopping experience quite like she did. And as I was in the fitting room trying on a slew of dresses -- most picked by her, a few picked by me -- she checked in every so often to ask which ones were working & which ones weren't. When I handed her three dresses that weren't quite right, she replaced them with FIVE MORE DRESSES that she "thought would look beautiful" on me. I felt like royalty. I eventually settled on one dress that was darling, but just a bit big. I went up to another shopgirl -- who I assume might've been the manager -- & asked her if she had the dress in a smaller size. She stuttered over her words a bit as she told me that, yes, she did have the dress in a small, but she had had her eyes on it as well; that she was keeping it in the back to buy for herself later that day. "Oh," I said, feeling awkward. "Well, that's alright! The medium's not too big. . ." "No no no," she insisted, "Please, try it on! If it fits better, you should take it. Here, I'll go get it." After trying & retrying on the small & medium, I ended up settling for the medium. As I checked out, the shopgirl asked me if I was sure I didn't want the small. "Seriously," she said, "It's not like I need more clothes, anyway." I told her I was sure, & smiled as I thanked her for considering me. The dress, by Free People, retailed at close to $100, but with my 20% coupon, I saved a bundle, which I was grateful for. As we left, we were bade with gracious goodbyes, & the girl who had helped me find my dress even wished me a happy birthday! I walked into Sloan only wanting a dress. . . but I walked out feeling like I had been given a handful of gifts in the form of kind, attentive, not-forced customer service. read more

I like Sloan and I have been to the NW 23rd Location, but one thing I don't like is the sales floor. It's just so messy and overwhelming never know where I have looked and were I haven't. The prices are decent and there is a wide mix of designers. There was a pretty big sales section and nice clerks. The dressing room (at least the one I was in) was tiny tiny and the curtains don't shut all the way so I felt like people could peep in on me. That didn't make me feel comfortable at all. I tried on a few things, but ended up spending $20 on a necklace that broke later that day. I could return it, but since I have all the tools to fix jewelery I didn't bother with it and just fixed it at home. read more

I was on a goddamn mission to find a new pair of jeans. Not only that, I was determined to find a different brand that would rip at the thigh like my Gap jeans always do (ones that never fit me well anyway). Despite the knowledge that clothes are supposed to fit /your/ body and not the other way around, I was starting to feel despondent and mutant-like about my inability to find pants that just...fit correctly. Allie (sp) was the person who helped me while I shopped. I'm usually pretty hesitant of walking into a place where the women follow you around and recommend things for you to try on, but I decided to take a chance here as she seemed friendly and easygoing. She made the whole experience super personal without being too invasive, and was incredibly knowledgeable about all of the merchandise they had. She also picked out a ton of options for me, including some cute shirts and sweaters (which I didn't end up buying, but might in the future). I also noticed that they actually had pants within my price range, which is pretty uncommon in boutique-like stores. I walked out spending slightly more on jeans than I have before, but with more confidence and a more positive body image that before I walked into the store. The day I visited Sloan, I was on a weekend trip to Portland and I had a massive hangover that deprived me of much interest in shopping. But Sloan looked enticing enough to lure me in, even though I had to keep an eye on the exit just in case my stomach followed through on its threats. I tried on a bunch of cute stuff and finally settled on two basic, incredibly soft and flattering shirts, both made in the USA. They were pricey, but when I don't have to worry about sales tax, I tend to go a little overboard. (The shirts were worth it; I've worn both several times in the past couple of weeks.) I also snagged two very pretty and reasonably priced necklaces. The girls working there were super friendly and helpful. read more

I went in looking to treat myself. Normally I prefer to just browse on my own but the employee who helped me out brought me great pieces that I would never have picked for myself. Sloan is literally the only place I shop for clothes in Portland. It has a good selection - a lot of good brands, good quality for the price - but only carries a few of each item, so you don't look like everyone else. Good prices, plus good deals if you're a regular shopper or on their email list (hello champagne sale nights!) The staff is awesome - good style (they'll pull pieces for you to help make outfits or find something for a specific event), super friendly and they're honest about what looks good on you and what they actually like. read more

Sloan carries tons of cute and on trend pieces - a lot of which are super affordable. The problem I have encountered is with the staff. The gals seem to get blinders on where they start helping someone and fail to notice whats happening around them... I was in last night and wasn't greeted or spoken to for the entire half hour I was browsing. I witnessed a couple young gals stand at the checkout waiting to buy jewelry for ten minutes as the sales-gals just walked past them over and over. As I was shopping a rack a sales-gal walked up and shoved all the items over so she could get at an item for someone else - but in the process totally slammed my hand between hangers while I was looking for a size. I looked over at her to see if shed noticed me standing just two feet away... didn't appear so. Hi there, I don't write many reviews. I went into Sloan looking for some tops - wanting something fun, wearable, different, washable. I'm older- and tired of the same old type clothes. Connie was Outstanding. Not sure if I'm spelling her name correctly. She brought clothes to me - gave me honest opinions and just so easy to work with. I had an open mind and loved the clothes I tried on. Then oh no - I got sick. Out of the blue I get esophageal spasms and Connie once again came to the rescue. Then her manage Natalie helped me. Both were tremendous. I don't like mentioning that I got ill for an hour at their store, but they treated me so well and were very caring. I'm not a great shopper, to be honest. I never have a friend who is excited to come along, so I go by myself and feel confused. I don't know what looks good, or what might look good. I always gravitate towards the same old stuff. So I was happily surprised when I walked into Sloan and they had enough people working to really give everyone personal attention and advice. They have a full length mirror setup right next to the checkout counter, so when you come out to see what the latest outfit looks like they are there to give you feedback. And they are honest! They were not afraid to tell me that a dress I had on was the wrong color and even suggest a color I should try on (which, by the way, was a really good color on me). The one thing that is hard for me about this store is that everything is totally mixed together. I wish for a section of dresses, a section of pants, etc, so that I don't have to go piece-by-piece through the whole store. It puts me into overwhelm mode which is not a really conducive state to be in for buying things. In fact, I didn't end up buying any of the things I tried on there that day. But I still left with a great impression overall - customer service will keep me coming back. read more
