Review for Madewell Soho I had a pretty frustrating experience with the staff here. The communication between the team, especially between upstairs and downstairs, really needs improvement. I was told by one associate upstairs to go to the men's section for a fitting room since theirs was full, but when I got there, the staff downstairs seemed totally unaware and sent me back up. Even though they all had radios, no one seemed to be on the same page. When I finally asked another associate, he said the fitting rooms were full, though there wasn't any line and told me I could wait if I wanted. At checkout, I asked for a bag, and instead of simply grabbing one that fit, the cashier tried to squeeze my top into the smallest bag possible. I tried to order a Madewell gift card for my daughter's birthday. (An ecard) it never showed up in her gmail. When I called, they said the order never went through. I tried ordering another one , they said it would go through, charged my Discover card 125.00...then within a few hours they sent an email to my daughter saying the order forvthe ecard was cancelled. I called Discover, and they told me they had approved the charge. I just wanted to give my daughter a gift ON HER ACTUAL BIRTHDAY. My single star is solely due to to the store's layout. This store is at a prime location, but the interior of the store is a fairly small rectangular space. The main floor occupies very little of the merchandise, and I believe I counted 3 extra flight of stairs above that looked very intimidating. I'm quite peeved that coming here, expecting to shop, my senior relative was unable enjoy her visit. Her being a senior, would be hard to even manage one, yet two extra flights of stairs. There was no elevator in sight, even though other boutiques don't have this issue. Wouldn't this be the same discriminatory act as the customers that requires the outdoor wheelchair accessibility. I feel its a shame that this is not something the establishment nor the brand is aware of or even though about on the basis of "customer experience." read more

Madewell products are indeed made well. This is a cute store in Soho with 2 floors. On the first floor, you will find the latest trends for clothes. On the second floor, there is a pretty decent sized sales section, fitting rooms and jeans bar. I used my birthday discount here to get a cute skirt from the sale rack. The fitting rooms are on the 2nd floor. I also really love their bags too, they are god quality and will last. read more

Madewell definitely caters to the hipster yet preppy young women in the late teens to late 20s. They have cute yet comfy tops and adorable dresses. Nothing here is too racy, sexy or exposing. The materials here are mostly cotton and wool so the quality is pretty reliable. Unfortunately, they do charge a semi high price for just a tshirt. Luckily, I came on a day when they have triple discount so I only paid H&M price for a sweater and a skirt. read more

Disclaimer: I head straight to the sale section For some reason I can fit Madewell, but not J. Crew. I know it's the same company, but for the most part their things fit better. I love the brand because of the "lower" (not really) prices but still good quality things. I love silk and cotton and a lot of their items are made with these materials. I don't usually go in the full priced section because, well, why? The people working here have always been nice and I never have a problem when trying things on or going to the register. Once when I was here I was trying to see if it was better to use my student discount versus their discount ( it's either or, no double discounts) and the cashier was more than helpful with me doing the math. Madewell, J.Crew's sister outpost, has officially opened its first permanent store in NYC. The clothes are cheaper than J.Crew and has a younger, colorful vibe which can be seen throughout the store with its loral/garden decor. There are tons of denim - both blue and colored, plaid, scarves, and slightly rumpled cottony goodness in the form of tops and dresses. They also carry Hunter rainboots and my personal favorite, Havaianas. Plenty of friendly salespeople afoot. The small bi-level shopping area can get very crowded. P.S. The pile of newsletters next to cashier has $25 off 100 coupons, for the NYC store only, good until 3/30! read more

Just like its affiliate J. Crew, Madewell specializes half in sturdy quality clothing and half in flimsy, pseudo designer caliber crap for quasi-designer prices of $20 to $300 dollars. A benefit of this store is that it carries Alexa Chung's line, as well as jackets and other items from rare and preppy vendors such as New Haven. The store also often features limited edition lines from other boutiques. Right now, for example, they have some technicolor skinny jeans in from Blank NYC. Finally, unlike most other stores, the in-store availability is actually better than what can be found on madewell.com, which behooves the shopper to hoof it to the nearest branch. The smallness of the store and its corner location on the Soho border makes it easily navigable on one hand but a packed clusterfuck on the other. When the store is full of oblivious shoppers, the place is wildly understaffed despite the valiant efforts of individual salespeople to answer questions, locate styles, get sizes, manage dressing rooms, and constantly fix their nice presentations, which become trampled by the spacey and generally stupid clientele. A genteel and stern guard is permanently stationed by the door, presumably to staunch the flow of shoplifters who are emboldened and even enticed by the general disorder within. When the store is quiet, the staff are either inattentive as they catch up on inventory duties or yak amongst themselves. Or, the entire shift of a total of three workers might swoop down upon you to suggest jewelry options you never needed or find a size that they don't even carry. It's hard to find a size when all the jeans in the store are 34"L. I might have short ass legs, but is it too much to ask to have 32s in stock, especially when the jeans fit so perfectly otherwise that I was ready to shell out $98.50 to replace my cheaper, holey pair from the Topshop next door?! There's always something on sale here, which exposes rhe store's ridiculously fast turnover. If it's not on sale, wait a minute. Seriously. The compact environment helps prevent a complete meltdown at the options. So far, I've succeeded in scoring an unassuming 3-season khaki jacket with a zip-off hood from one of the aforementioned prep providers as well as two cotton plaid "boyfriend shirts," that were on sale over the holidays. By "on sale," of course, I mean that each shirt was about $49, marked down from its normal price, which was a fashionable $75 or $79). I've gotten kind of tired of the shirts, but they're of good quality and have interesting cuts (the lighter weight one has a nice long tail in the back, which I rather enjoy as a layering option in the winter). So, I guess I could say that they've just become stock pieces in my closet, for what that's worth. There are lots of distractions as well, like a baby blue mohair Alexa sweater that would have made me break out into a rash, a knit dress that would have stretched and pilled after three wears, shoes that would have drawn blood on their maiden voyage, and jewelry that would have lost their sheen immediately upon my exit from the store. That said, in the land of Madewell, it's all about finding what you want at the lowest price possible and then getting the hell out. If you linger, you might find yourself in the preposterous position that I did a couple months ago, when one of the salesgirls took an armload of my finds, and then completely disappeared. A lot of stuff in the pile had been the last item left of a certain style, size, and color, so I was beyond disappointed and then stone pissed when I had to wait for about three coworkers of this horrible person to make phone calls and walkie talkie transmissions and a bunch of apologetic overtures amounting to absolutely nothing. This is when I learned to hold on to my crap as I progress through the store, as inconvenient as that might be. When in doubt, it's a good idea to put your stuff on hold for the rest of the day, because a little extra time proves to be a good litmus test as to what is really worth purchasing from the store. Don't bother squirreling it away somewhere because there's a huge line to talk with the next available representative, because miraculously, someone will get back to restocking it ASAP. Oh, and say hello and goodbye to the poor sap at the door - he stands there every goddamn day watching all of us stomp back and forth in our own bullshit world. It would probably make his day just to be acknowledged of his existence. read more

Imagine if J Crew and Anthropologie had bored, casual sex and didnt call each other afterwards. The resulting unplanned baby would yield a terrifying monster of greater blase hipsterdom, even more limited size selection, and just as over-priced snobbish self-aggrandizement. Thus, the poorly monikered Madewell. If you're above a size 6/8, forget about it. No flowy floral mini-dresses and schlumpy denim jumpsuits for you. It's like Forever 21 decided for some reason to try to grow up and take itself way too seriously, and charge extra accordingly. The physical store is cramped and was quite crowded when I went on a Sunday afternoon. It has some nice wood elements and painstakingly selected vintage-esque flair sprinkled throughout. The organization and layout of the clothes is questionable at best: there's no real visual hierarchy in terms of color or style, and no-brainers like jeans on a table are somehow made impossible to effectively browse. I know this brand ha been blowing up lately, and I place the blame squarely on Alexa Chung, another twee, jolie laide development in the ever expanding canon of fashion questionableness. Madewell is just too painfully trendy, and standoffishly hipster to really even take seriously. Or pay that much for. read more

Reading other Yelpers' reviews led me to realize that Madewell is an often misinterpreted brand. It is not meant to be hipster (aside from the fake, plastic glasses which throws off the whole scene), and definitely not preppy. A line of J. Crew, Madewell is essentially a modern-day interpretation of an American denim label. Denim is their most prized line of production, and currently trending are their low-rise "skinny skinny" jeans or jeggings. The slim fit, soft fabric, easy stretch, and fading washes define their fine-tuned denim collection. Jeans range $150-300 per pair. Their clothes and shoes are simply overpriced (not to say their denim aren't overpriced) and quite average in both quality and design. Aside from jeans, Madewell bags and accessories are very well made. Suede bi-fold wallets are very cute and functional. Genuine leather totes (brown, black, olive) and messenger bags ($160~) are modern Parisian chic combined with American simplicity. Madewell is designed for late teens and women in their early to mid 20s. Their price range and their target customers are out of proportioned. Yet, this brand seems to be one of American girls' favorites. "Denim bar" is on 1st level. Sales rack, shoes, accessories, and more on 2nd level. The brown leather couches (not for sale) on 2nd level are probably the most practical pieces in the entire store. read more

Ordering a skirt the store didn't have in stock ended up being a total hassle. They mailed me the wrong size, and when I brought it back to the store and explained their error, both the salesgirl and the manager shrugged and returned the price to my card, then made me fill out an order sheet and pay for the order all over again. I didn't hear a single apology, a promise that the order would go smoothly this time, or even a hint of empathy. Now I have to wait yet another week for my skirt to ship, and I'm still worried that they'll send me the wrong one. Ugh. Bad customer service puts me in such a foul mood...this stupid skirt had better get me some, you know what I mean? read more

Confession: I am committing retail adultery. Although as far as J.Crew is concerned, I'm pretty sure it would be happy that I'm keeping it within the family. I've been sippin' that Crewlade for quite some time now but I'm starting to get thirsty for the Wellmade. I visited Madewell for the first time while I was visiting New York. This store is uber cute and shopper friendly. Originally I thought that Madewell was going to be the Urban's Anthropologie to J.Crew. . .but you know, the price point is either lower or the same as J.Crew; it's definitely not higher. Their pieces are softer, more feminine casual and less preppy chic. Madewell's clothes have a more freeflowing energy to them vs. a structured classiness you'd expect from J.Crew. You'll feel like you want to skip along a grassy knoll when you see the floral jumpers and summery tank dresses but not to worry, you'll also spot the familiar stripes, ginghams and preppy blazers reminiscent of J.Crew glory. I love this place. I'm even planning two LA shopping trips anchored around visits to Madewell. read more

Great sale section upstairs in this location, much better than the Flatiron location. They have lots of seating for your poor, poor male tagalogs, and the customer service is great. In general, Madewell's clothing and accessories are high quality (e.g. their bags and shoes are always real leather, nothing fake) so sometimes it's worth the higher price point. I think it's cool that they also carry different brands, not just their own Madewell brand. Their jeans seem to be well-made (gah, the name!) and come in lots of current fits and washes, but aren't quite the right fit for me. Madewell's regular prices are a bit splurgey but their sales (online and in store) are fantastic - the other day I got an adorable pair of leather sandals for $50 down from $130. Be mindful of price discrepancies between the store and online, though - a bag that was on sale online was regular price in-store, while the sandals I bought were extra 30% off online but extra 50% off in store. Depending on the item you're buying, this could translate into lots of $$ saved so it's worth it to do a quick phone search if you're in the store or check out a store before hitting the "Order" button online. read more

Madewell is to J Crew as Urban Outfitters is to Anthropologie. I'd explain that, but chances are if you're reading it, you are overly-familiar with each of those stores. Chains. Whatever. I like Madewell for its accessories. Actually, their accessories are basic, but well made (ha!), simple, and thus will go with many things over many years. The clothes just aren't made for the female form. It (like UO) is made for the 32-30-34ish stick-like frame, and not so much for the hourglassy 36-26-36 frame. Regardless, the clothes are basic, but cute, and will last you a decade or so. Perfect for toning down a few over the top pieces out of your wardrobe that need an injection of nonchalance. I stopped in on the hunt for a cross-body "petite briefcase bag." It was sadly out of stock, but I almost walked away with a couple of perfectly plaid button downs and a striped sweater from the sale area (upstairs!). The line to try on was a bit too long, and my patience for mothers and their annoying daughters shopping together was running thin, so I split. read more

Cute new store with the same CEO as J Crew. I was hoping for better (read: cheaper) prices than J Crew, but it's not much different. Regardless, they have some cute stuff. But what was most impressive was the customer service. Katie was helping us out and she repeatedly ran up and down stairs to get us other sizes in jeans. In addition, she never rushed us out of the dressing rooms, despite the fact that other people were waiting. I used to be a classic preppy girl- all my clothes was black and white and neutral shades like tan. J crew and banana republic were my favorite stores. They were safe. My mom taught me to shun patterns and prints because they were volatile and these those styles were quickly rotated out of fashion. So I dressed like an middle aged lady. Then my designer friend recommended I try Madewell. I went there after Christmas while the snowstorm was starting. Despite being pelted in the face with snow, I was really happy because the clothes were so cute and much less than I expected. Since Madewell was said to be a sister store of J crew, I expected the prices to be much higher than J crew but found them to be comparable. Madewell is like the hippie chic younger sister of Jcrews. Browsing through the racks, I saw a silky tank top that was so beautiful I gasped. It is 100% silk and looked like a condensed blurred version of the ceiling of the Bellagio. It was 88, marked down to 29. What a deal! I am looking forward to finding more chic pieces at Madewell. read more

Since my original visit, I've gone back several times and have always found great things on sale. The upstairs "sale" area is the place to find their great, made well (haha) clothes. I've picked up a lot of basics and love the quality and feel (and not to mention sale price) of everything! To note, my size is an extra small and every time I try on a shirt or sweater, the sleeves always seem to be tight so then I try a small which doesn't fit. I asked one of the employees about this and she said Madewell makes their sleeves a little on the tighter side. read more

So unfriendly! I just moved to the area and this is my closest Madewell to my new apartment. I went to the counter to purchase some clothes i had on hold and the girls behind the counter were incredibly abrupt and rude. They were extremely judgmental and gave off an awful vibe. I asked for a printed receipt and she said its too late, i've already emailed it - which wouldn't work because the one they had on file was old and i no longer had access to. Usually they should ask if you want your email printed or emailed to you, but it was like they just wanted me out of the store as soon as possible. I just don't get the point of being so rude. Not only from a person who works in retail and should be trained in customer service, but also...there's just no need to have such an attitude? read more

Mickey Drexler's (J.Crew) new endeavor is definitely bound for success. The line is accessible, fun, but not overly trendy. The whimsical colors are easy to mix and match while almost seeming collectible. The brand has a more urban feel than J.crew, yet still retains a bit of sophistication. A great go-to retailer for a casual job wardrobe or weekend wear. I now have quite a few of their scarves. I'm also a big fan of the boots.... I bought the gray high-heel boots from the fall '08 collection and I have received repeated compliments. The gray garment dyed denim is a great staple for your fall wardrobe! The prices are reasonable. Check often for sales. My only complaint: The skinny jeans are adorable, but the sizing if off - consistent with J.Crew. The jeans are GIGANTIC, but the cuts and colors are very on-trend. Hopefully their e-commerce site will be up and running soon! read more

Madewell, if you ever read this, PLEASE considering rearranging the layout of this location. It honestly makes no sense to put the sale racks next to the changing rooms. Sale sections tend to be the most crowded area of any store, so situating them next to another section of natural congestion is a little insane. People queue between the racks of sale items while they wait for a changing room, which makes it almost impossible to look through the racks. It would make more sense to put regular-priced items by the changing rooms: as people stand and wait, the chances of them picking up some of this nearby regular-priced merchandise will increase. I love you, Madewell, but every time I try to give this location another chance, I walk in then straight back out again in frustration. read more

Madewell is like J. Crew mixed with a dose of Anthropologie. They have very cute stuff and the staff is super nice. I got a small water bottle while waiting in line for the dressing room. I found a cute dress on sale upstairs and after waiting in line for a few minutes, they sent me down to an empty dressing room downstairs. Love the service! They also have a lot of nice denim. I had a birthday discount that was emailed to me and decided to go use it in the store. I've previously shopped in the flatiron store where they have a great range of sizes but I was really disappointed to find that the largest size carried in Soho is XL. I wound up buying a candle and presumably their lack of sizes saved me a lot of money because although the clothes do run large, the experience was ruined by knowing the store doesn't think about clients beyond XL. read more

Ah, Madewell, occupying that magic spot where classy, hip, young and respectable come together in a big beautiful metaphor. Denim and chambray shirts are amazing, dresses are super cute, and their design team has a great eye for sweaters in particular. If you've outgrown AmAp and UO but don't feel emotionally ready to commit to J. Crew or Banana Republic or whatever your mom is wearing (love you mom), Madewell's got your butt covered. (Literally, they will cover your butt. With pants) The store is PACKED on weekends with glassy-eyed tourist shoppers. Be prepared to wait on lines: to get through the door, to reach items on the shelf, to get a fitting room. Kudos to the staff, though: they handled the crowds with greatest aplomb. They were even, dare I say it, professional? The woman working near me was able to get extra sizes, give advice (all complimentary) and do crowd control while maintaining perfect composure. I've worked retail and I was impressed. The other nice surprise was when I checked out. The woman at the register asked if I was a student. "No," I said, "But I am a teacher," more because I wanted some validation for my contribution to society. "Great, we have a teacher discount, too!" SWEET. The one thing I'm not super impressed with is their jeans; I like my jeans to have some body/heft AND stretch, and the material on the "skinny skinny" style at Madewell was very lightweight, almost like a legging. It felt like it would start shredding on its own - and not in that stylish way. For $120+ a pop, I'll pass. Oh, and if you don't want "skinny skinny" jeans, too bad, that's it (well, that and "rail straight"). First time visiting this store, and it was a great shopping experience! The store itself is very aesthetically pleasing with bright lights, neat arrangements, and two floors of merchandise. The first floor has regular-priced items, and more items, sale, and dressing rooms are located on the top floor. The style is classic American, not as preppy as J. Crew but not as weird/hipster as Urban Outfitters. Regular prices are pretty steep, but the sale is awesome. Today there was an extra 40% off sale, and they had a large selection. The fitting room attendant and cashiers were all very polite. Also, I was able to get an extra 15% student discount on top of the 40% sale. What more can you ask for? read more

Loved 90% of this store's clothes; which is amazing. However, they do not carry xl. Hmmm...if you have any size of chest over a "B" then you most likely will not fit in their blouses. I did find one shirt that fit me as it was made to fit loosely. If I had unlimited amounts of money I would live at Madewell. This place has stunning clothes and very trendy for what is in. They are a younger version of JCrew. It has a very preppy atmosphere but still has the extremely upscale price tag. This store has an AWESOME sale section upstairs and can save your wallet! I really like the vibe of this store. They had a lot of cute casual items. I do feel like there are better places to go, especially if your going to pay that much for basics.
