I've been starved for a real dive bar since moving down to south OC, so this place was a breath of fresh air. As much as a dive bar could ever be fresh. I brought my laptop to get some work done, which got me some confused looks, but hey -- ya gotta do what ya gotta do. There seemed to be quite a few regulars, and they were very friendly! They even got the server's attention for me behind the bar. I had a $7 beer and enjoyed the vibes, until a lady started putting b2b Dead Kennedys songs on the jukebox and concentrating on work became impossible. I'm glad she was living her best life, though. My son ordered the same drink and his was served in a dirty glass that had bar snacks in it. Offer my credit card and was told cash only. Negative a milion stars for a bathroom with NO TOILET SEAT COVERS, 1 ply toilet paper, no hot water and no paper towels, just a hand dryer that blows germ everywhere. Also, they only take cash. Walked in to watch the fight and I was approached with "can I help you with something" I'm Hispanic and all I saw was white folks in the bar and well let's just say he doesn't have much business for a reason. I like this place because it knows what it is and doesn't claim to be anything else. Small little dive bar with 2 pool tables and cheap drinks. You can't get a Modelo for under $5 anywhere else as far as I know. I come almost exclusively for the pool tables. Its probably the only place in Costa Mesa that I never have to wait in line for a game. There are good players that come in from time to time to give you a good challenge. Yeah its cash only but that means you're not over charged on drinks to pay for those processing fees. My only complaint would be the bathrooms. God they smell horrible. So the good bartender (Darcie) left and while some nights are kinda ok. Others are a mainly a disaster. In the past, I rarely hung out for more than a couple of hours unless I was with friends or a night out with the wife. Usually, I'd duck in alone, have a cocktail or two then head home. I was usually there when Darcie worked but this was coincidental due to my parenting schedule. She made interesting drinks, the music was on point, the vibe was amusing enough and its right off the 55. Once she left its been a smaller and different crowd on those nights. The cocktail situation is really not good. I am certain one of the bartenders does not know how to make basic cocktails (who puts 1.5 ounces of sweet vermouth in a Manhattan?). The music situation is.....disappointing and interspersed with silence. That vibe I mentioned? Yeah thats gone too. I used to go to have a good cocktail while listening to music and maybe chat with some people. I've already discussed the drink and music challenges, and the people? Its just a different crowd, one without the charm and conversation of previous nights. Its probably a 2 Star place but I subtracted 1 Star as its cash only and the bathroom should be condemned. read more

Came here for the first time tonight and I was impressed. Great drinks and their detergent was exceptionally fragrant! Unfortunately their pool tables were taken up, so I filled my time by watching the wash cycle for 30 minutes, leaving me feeling fulfilled by the end of the night. Madeline was supposed to be my new favorite bar, I talked about wanting to go there for MONTHS before I could convince any of my friends to go. So on one of our many date night, bike rides, the man and I popped into Madeline's. I was so, so excited, I absolutely love small, dive bars; they are small, darkly lit, charming and you never know what kind of people you're going to run into. Unfortunately, we met the female bartender; she was so incredibly rude, it was unbelievable. We handed her our credit card, to pay, and she snapped at us. Listen, I understand you don't take credit cards and I have no problem getting cash, but she did not have to act rude about it. So she directs us to the ATM outside and my man went to go pull out some cash. He tried for about 5 minutes before figuring something was wrong with his card. So, he cam in and told me to get cash out with mine. I tried, I tried, I tried again and it was not working. After about 5 mins of me trying my card, I went inside and explained to her what was happening, asking is she could give us any advice on another close ATM that I could run to, and again, she snapped. She made an incredibly snide comment, which I can't recall right now, and huffed and puffed her way outside, all 20 feet, to show us how the fickle machine can only read the card if you run it slow. Yeah, bitch, a little heads up would have been nice. We got our money and paid, and at that point, we honestly didn't even feel like finishing our drinks(but don't worry, we did), because the bartender was so hostile towards us. We tried not to let it ruin our time there, but there was no getting away from it. We quickly finished our drinks and headed home. It was honestly such a bummer, because I really, really wanted to love this place, it's so cute, so convenient and seemed prefect, but if you happen to go in on a night when this woman is working, you're going to regret it. read more

I came here on a Friday night with my boyfriend and one other guy friend and quickly left after being served by that blond broodwitch that other Yelpers aptly identified as the bartender. The locals are...interesting and by interesting I mean they looked like they wanted to shove a chainsaw through each of our crotches and zip it in a quick and upward fashion, a la Gears of War. Cash only? OMFG what century are we in???? One of the local ladies even came up to us when a Sublime song was playing on the juke and asked if we smoked ganja and started feeling up my buddy's leg. Me and a friend wanted a drink after an event at the OC Fairgrounds and stayed at a Hotel a few minutes away. Found this place on Yelp and walked over. Not to crowded at midnight on a Saturday night, but its just what we needed. Cash only, pool tables, small back area, and GREAT jukebox! Huge parking lot too. I come here at least a 5 times a month! Most of the staff is super nice fast and friendly!! But it seems like every time I come on a Friday night the girl that is bartending is always on something! She can barley keep her eyes open, which means it takes that much longer to get a drink. I waited over 5 minutes and she wasn't even helping anyone. She just looks lost and confused standing around! Madeleines is a bar for those that have a true sense of respect and appreciation for what a dive bar actually is - a locals bar with a mellow vibe, strong drinks, pool tables and some really great personality. The crowd is diverse with a mix of people from all generations and walks of life; which to me is the embodiment of what any bar should strive to be. Overly pretentious, stuck up, hipster jacka**es should all stay away from this place in order to preserve its dignity. If you want to be in a bar with a young crowd, watery drinks, top 40 hits and girls that aren't wearing enough clothes I can only suggest you go to downtown Fullerton. So I had been curious about this neighborhood bar ever since moving to the area a few years ago. I was in need of a laundromat today. Coast Coin is conveniently next door, so after throwing in my clothes, I popped over and grabbed a seat at the bar. I ordered a dirty martini from bartender, Kacey. The bar patrons and Kacey I found to be friendly and talkative. Darcy was the evening bartender and like me, an East Coaster! Friendly and cool as well. I really had an enjoyable time and look very forward to stopping in again soon. I found this place to be a comfortable dive bar with good music and a friendly atmosphere.
