After a few updos and haircuts by Anastasia, I got my courage up and booked in with her to get my hair highlighted - keep in mind dye hasn't touched my hair in almost 8 years. She was careful to be sure she knew exactly what I wanted my highlights to look like, and even made sure to find out how often I was willing to come back to have them maintained, since this factors in to how she would do them. I went to Madd Pretty because I had a living social makeover coupon for a deep conditioning treatment, hair styling lesson and make-up lesson. This was apparently $175 value but I paid $87. After I purchased it they decided it was only good for weekdays and as a busy professional i was really annoyed! I work late most weekdays and don't normally go out. It would have been nice to get the makeup done and then gone out for a late night. The makeup application was ok but, in my opinion, no better than you would get for free at Shopper's drug mart or the Bay. When I got to the till I realized they had forgotten the deep coniditioning treatment but my hair was so full of bobby pins and hair spray from the hair lesson that I didn's see the point. They are way too overpriced for what they offer!! read more

I have never in my life had a haircut that took over two hours! I have a lot of hair, but for one it isn't long (a little longer than chin length) and two what I wanted was pretty basic..a little longer in the front shorter in the back. It took the lady no joke over two hours. I just moved into town and was looking for a new place for a haircut. I decided to try this place out, they could fit me in within 15 minutes, seemed somewhat reasonably priced(I think it was 60ish dollars for a cut and blow dry)..perfect! The lady was friendly don't get me wrong however the haircut was incredibly uneven ( had to have two inches cut off to even it out at my next haircut).. And it was a weird uneven the right side in the front was longer than the left however in the back the left side was longer than the right(is that a weird style I am not aware of?), she also kept dropping the comb on the ground and using it ( dont think that is sanitary),and did I mention in took over two hours! The only reason why they got a star is because I got a free makeup touch up, which as the previous post said wasn't the most sanitary thing..so including this I was there for over 2.5 hrs read more

Tried this salon for the first (& last) time a few months ago. The woman that did my hair was nice, but was unprofessional (her friend stopped by and they talked at length during my cut while another patron was waiting for a cut from her) and ended up messing up my dye job. Charged me more than I have been charged at upscale salons for the same trim and root touch up. Also took longer than usual because of all of the back and forth. She had also claimed to be a specialist with blond touch ups/dye jobs, which didn't ring true as my roots came out brassy and yellow and did not match the rest of my hair). Best to avoid this place & try another professional salon. read more

6/30 I accompanied a friend here while she was getting her makeup done for Halloween (she was dressed as Snow White). While I sat and watched her get her face on, there were two other ladies getting similar treatments and a guy getting special FX zombie makeup on. Very cool. The place is tidy and the decor hip; the MUAs seem like awesome, fun ladies that would be awesome to grab a drink or two with. Aside from doing makeup, they also sell the cosmetics they use on your face and they do hair as well. Couple of nitpicky things I have about this place, as someone who also does makeup (something I learned out of necessity; comes with the trade!): - Hygiene, I would give them a 5 out of 10. A couple of times I noticed the MUA dipping tools she used right back in to the product container. Sure, they were clean, sanitized tools, but they cease to be clean and sanitized the minute you put them on a client's face. If you're going to dip a disposable mascara wand right back in to the mascara tube, you defeat the purpose of using a disposable mascara wand. Eyeshadow, you can sanitize by wiping off the top layer with alcohol... you can't sanitize mascara once it's been contaminated. - Product waste, due to improper tools being used. I saw her scraping and digging in to a pot of black eyeshadow with a q-tip, in order to give my friend a deep black smoky eye. Rather than scrape a little bit of the shadow on to her hand or a palette and then use a brush - which, would have used far less product, not to mention, would have been infinitely more sanitary. Also, she would've achieved the opaque black much faster if she had used a primer and/or foiled the shadow (using the shadow wet). All the product she was digging with the q-tip was getting absorbed by the q-tip. I get that cleaning brushes, especially if you have to do it all the time during the day, is a pain in the butt, but I don't think using q-tips as an alternative is better. - On the site, it says they use Maddpretty Makeup and Smashbox. The lipstick and eyeshadow she used on my friend were very clearly MAC. Why not mention that on the site? Especially if you also sell MAC? ---- Those things aside, I think she did a pretty decent job with my friend's Sultry Snow White look. The sexy nun sitting next to my friend looked great too, and I love that everyone (my friend included) in the salon helped her out with her wig! Aww. Getting a full face of glam (or maybe something a little toned down!) seems to be pretty reasonable: $60 + $15 if you get falsies put on. Hit this place up if you've got a first date coming up and your makeup skills haven't progressed since Junior High. read more

This is an update to my review from Tuesday. I have since been contacted by Maddpretty's manager, who was apologetic and sincere. She also offered to either fix my haircut herself, or to have me come in to have my makeup done/ hair styled. While I declined the offer, I think that the gesture of reaching out was significant. She also said that the stylist would face consequences for her behaviour. I do hope that out of all of this, the stylist just understands why / how her comments were offensive. In my response to the manager I indicated that I don't necessarily need her to be reprimanded; I need her to understand why her statements were offensive in the first place. You should know that after this interaction with the Manager, I sincerely believe that the experience I had at Maddpretty is not a reflection of the values of the business itself. read more

I have previously written a review for Madd Pretty when I saw Shab here in 2014 before trying my hair luck elsewhere for a while, but I've been seeing Allison at Madd Pretty since January 2016 and I love it so I figured it was time for an update. I get my hair coloured every 3 to 5 weeks plus I get other services (cuts, blowouts, smoothing treatments etc.) as needed and I am both terrible at doing my own hair and kinda high maintenance (pretty much a nightmare client), but I never leave Madd Pretty anything but 100% happy with my hair - Allison is the Michael Jordan of hair stylists. At my last colour appointment, I had decided out of nowhere that I wanted a "change" and found a couple of pics I found on Instagram (after looking for all of 30 seconds) that were kind of what I wanted but not exactly. Allison looked at the pictures and asked me some follow up questions and was able to interpret what I actually meant and translated this into a stunning new colour (new base colour + highlights and low lights) that was literally exactly what I wanted. Overall, Madd Pretty is an awesome salon - the vibe is fun and casual, but the stylists know what they're doing and the prices are super reasonable. While I only see Allison, I've spent enough time here to know that reviews that say things like "the stylists were hanging out talking to each other instead of focusing on their clients" just don't reflect reality. If you're in Calgary and you want awesome hair, you need Madd Pretty. read more

Because of my experiences, I've brought MANY friends in for makeup and have trusted Jackie with making me feel beautiful on my wedding day 5 years ago. My son is getting married, and tonight my soon to be daughter in law and I went in for a makeup trial for their upcoming wedding. I had the worst experience here. I went in to get a a blowout done. The girl that did my hair barley said two words to me the entire time. She washed my hair and didn't even rinse out all the conditioner. She blow dried my hair and kept hitting me in the head with the blow drier... Seemed like she had no clue what she was doing. I sat there feeling very uncomfortable as she didn't engage in any conversation . I could of easily washed my own hair and curled it but when you pay money you expect high quality service... I then asked if she could just do my eyeliner which she ended up charging me $30 for... My blow out of $35 and she charged me the same amount to put two lines on my face? Kailey did my hair and makeup for my engagement photoshoot. She was absolutely lovely and kept and upbeat energy for the session. She did an amazing job with my hair, which is very thin. It's hard to make my hair look good, which is why I'm more than willing to pay someone to do it. Kailey worked magic and made it look like I have so much hair! She did a great job with makeup too, and comforted me when I was sweating a lot (I have hyperhidrosis). She did touchups after doing my hair, and both hair and makeup lasted hours in 30 degree weather. Thanks for helping make me feel confident during my photos! read more

In December I got engaged and I have already booked my hair and makeup for my wedding in August. Never before has my hair looked so healthy and the colour stays vibrant which I've never experienced before having naturally dry hair. I went to maddpretty for one of there signature "platinum blonde" looks as a friend recommended them. I wanted just the crown of my head platinum and I was quoted 80$ on the phone for just a top half treatment for my length of hair. I get into the salon and they tell me the girl who's doing it is the best they have and as she is platinum blonde herself. The conversation was really dry with her but she was a nice girl nonetheless. My hair has never been died with cheap drug store hair dye and I forewarned her that It had auburn highlights in the last 9 months. I told her to use a stronger peroxide and to paint on the scalp for the closest dye possible. She did not follow my suggestions clearly.. My hair did not go platinum blonde but a gross, goldish red color. Then she grilled me about using box dye?! They overcharged me for having to do two treatments and wanted me to book another session to finish the job. I didn't end up going back. The salon is super cute though and while I was there for hours on end I did watch them host a makeup party and that was pretty neat! read more

I recently took my Mom, who was visiting from out of town, to the salon for a full cut&color do. The staff were sweet and respectful to my mom, extremely knowledgeable about the different products for different hair types, and were able to back up the points made with first-hand experience. We had a blast with our stylist during the appointment and my mom loved the color! I would definitely recommend Maddpretty for hair and pampering! read more

Usually not a reviewer but this service was so unbelievably bad I had to share. 2 months prior I made appointments for my mother and I. When we got there, no one helped us, they were understaffed and allowed and put before us 3 extra walk-ins (with a wedding group). Never go here! We were an hour and half later than the appointment end time and caused us to have to seriously rush to my brother later wedding. It was awful! No reason to ever make an appointment time, they don't honour it. read more

Madd Pretty staff kept dumping their garbage in our condo's bin. We asked them to stop on three occasions. Our garbage bin is now locked and they have started leaving their garbage in front of our bin, loose in the alley. The staff at Madd Pretty are terrible neighbours. Madly Bad. I left Madly Ugly. The worst salon experience/outcome I have ever had in my life. I chose Allison for a colour roots to do be done, due to the other positive review of her on Yelp. While she, as a person, is nice and fun, bizarrely, she claimed expert colour skills and blatant confidence, and clearly displayed the polar opposite. Not only was she unable to follow the clear lines of my previous colour, which were in 3 even chunks (despite my clearly pointing them out with explicit instructions to follow it, along with photos of the last session) for some reason she believed that colouring to the roots (which was the primary reason I was there in the first place!) is literally impossible. And that wasn't the worst part. First, she coloured opposite to the previous colour by ignoring the lines and colours present and parting the hair in the total opposite direction and applying it that way - creating all kinds of new patterns and bleached areas amidst the old one. Second, she left a half inch to a full inch of old roots untreated whatsoever. Third, she did not know enough to do each colour separately, and/or to do what is necessary to ensure absolutely no bleeding into the colour adjacent, and some bled into the others during processing. Fourth - and this took some time to discover - she used high volume processing that caused a large amount of my hair to go brittle and break off. I mean A LOT - 15-25% of my hair LOST! (I know it was from this visit, as this has never happened before in my lifetime of other colouring.) As a result of all this, I now have: - new hair growth with uneven, zig-zaggy stripes due to the bizarre way colour was applied unevenly - multiple shades where there previously was one - a gray hair streak that has gray new growth, icky pale yellow bled through the middle, then gray again ( it was all gray before, and was supposed to stay that way) - a blonde streak with a dark brown horizontal stripe from the bleeding - hair that is all thinned out at the bottom and ends due to the use of high volume processing and lastly, hair that is SO MESSED UP colour-wise that another salon's Master Colorist decided it was TOO COMPLICATED to even FIX. I now feel like the ugliest person on earth, and my hair is not even in good enough condition now to strip the colour out of it. I don't feel confident even being in public now, nevermind feeling pretty, as a direct result of my visit to Allison at MaddPretty. What makes it so devastating is that the effects are going to last for at least 6 months and likely for much longer. The positives: There are a few, and only fair to mention them as well. It is a cool, funky salon, in terms of design, enjoyable to sit in. And kudos is deserved to be given to another stylist named Jason, who tried to fix it the next day (while Allison took off after waiting 5 minutes, instead of trying to repair it herself, despite the urgency). Thanks to his efforts, it was just okay enough to be in public without complete embarrassment for the first month or two, at which point all the new, unwanted high-contrast roots Allison had added began to appear. (Before that I would not dare leave the house.) Jason deserves a real pat on the back for not only stepping up to the plate to attempt what was already a challenging correction, and an terrified client, but he did it out of the goodness of his heart to boot. He did not have to do that. And as mentioned, Allison is perfectly okay as an individual. She might be good at haircuts, I do not know as I did not have one done. But keep my experience in mind if you choose to have colour done at this salon with her. read more

Me, my sis n my mom recently got hair do n makeup for a wedding from Maddpretty. I wasn't so happy with their services. We had kids with us. They have no TV or books for kids. They didn't offer us any water or tea as some good salons do. We took the pix of makeup we wanted. Shannon who did mine n my sisters makeup was slightly rude n arrogant. She hardly looked at the pic and did not follow well. She said to me the girl in pic was too fair n i was dark so that makeup wouldn't look good on me. It was only blue eyeshadow and pink blush n lipstick that does look good on warm tones when i'm skin tone 4(medium brown). She didn't do my neck until reminded. She used finishing powder n makeup setting spray also only after i asked. She didn't make winged eyeliner properly. Looked like she was brushing us off. Charging us $65 for 15 min makeup. Shannon had bad mouth smell too that kept bothering me. The girl who did hair for my sis was very rude too. Dunno her name but was short girl with straight, short hair.She kept telling my sister that the style she wanted was too hard when it was simple curls. The only girl we liked was Jessica who dealt with my mom n was polite n respectful. I will not go back to Maddpretty in future. read more

I recently went here to get my hair cut and coloured. I was pretty unhappy with the whole experience.It was by far the longest hair colour I have ever had and it was was terribly done! They don't have those large hair dryers and so the dye was on for so long that my head itched and burned. This has never happened to me! The quality is just bad. Plus she killed my hair. I have never had such dry hair in my life. The ends are splitting and it feels like a wig. I don't over colour, last time was 6 months ago because I don't want my hair to die... I have been trying to grow it longer. So now I have been trying deep conditioning treatments hoping to save it. The impressive thing is that I went to someone with years experience because I thought they wouldn't destroy my hair. The colour is uneven, spots are missed, some of my roots are showing. The "idea" she had for my hair was fantastic... too bad she couldn't execute it. Don't waste your time and money. read more

I want to start by saying that I was alittle hesitate to get my haircut at this place because of the name. I'm a guy and was recommended to get my haircut by Jason as my old stylist retired. Now please understand I am quite picky when it comes to haircuts. Not only did Jason give me the best haircut ive ever had he was extremely personable. It was absolutely perfect! I've recommended Jason to all my friends and decided that I would do a review on Yelp (rare) because I was that PLEASED, I can't say enough good things about Jason and Maddpretty. Was referred to the hairstylist Andrea at Madpretty by a friend and was told upon calling the salon that Andrea is no longer an employee. I asked the receptionist on the phone if they knew what salon Andrea had gone, was told that the receptionist was "new" and unaware and that someone who had the information would call me back later today. I got the call back but was told that Andrea's departure was "sudden" and that they did not know where she was working. I later got a a hold of the friend who referred me to Andrea and said that she was at Karma Salon in the NW. I sincerely hope that madpretty did not withhold this information simply to make a client out of me. If you're not honest, dont expect me to support your business. read more
