I usually don't read Yelp reviews, let alone write them, but Mad One Jacks has made me a changed woman. I have lived in the area for 8 years now and have had the worst luck w/hair salons. They either close down, my stylist quits, gets fired, goes on maternity or medical leave... I even followed one to 2 different salons, then on to an extremely high-end spa over an hour away. Needless to say, after my $350 service (WITH a 10% "new customer discount") I won't be traveling to her anymore. I was about to throw in the towel and go get a mall haircut (yeah - I got desperate) before deciding to check out Yelp. Mad One Jack's got EXCELLENT reviews. I honestly could not find a bad one. Most recently, everyone had been raving about Stephanie Diaz. She isn't on their website yet because she's fairly new, but I decided to go for it. We have the same name and I took that as a sign of good luck. I called and was able to make an appointment with her without a problem. They only thing I was wary of was that they asked for a credit card in the event I couldn't adhere to their cancellation policy. Things come up and you can't make it sometimes, but I knew I def couldn't afford the $50 fee and would be sure to keep my appointments. I showed up on a Sunday morning (they are open Sundays - AMAZING NEWS!) and my experience was wonderful right from the start. They took my coat and offered me an array of refreshments. Stephanie came over and introduced herself, sat me down and spoke to me extensively about what I was looking for. When it was time to get shampoo'd, the guy doing it gave me a scalp massage. Then he led me back to Stephanie's chair and gave me a shoulder massage while I waited. It was awesome!! Stephanie gave me the BEST haircut. She spoke to me throughout - telling me what she was doing, and even explained why she would do things a certain way- all to make my life easier. She was sweet and we chatted quite a bit. After she was done, she handed me a little gift bag - a thank you gift for choosing Mad One Jack's. I HUGGED her. Impulsively. I just had to. That's how happy I was about my new haircut, my new stylist and my new favorite salon. The best part? It was the most inexpensive haircut I've ever received. As a loyal customer for close to 3 years now, I am extremely disappointed at the service I received yesterday and the way the owner disrespected me as someone who has received multiple keratin treatments, to haircuts and balayage on a regular basis (and even recommending many friends who live in the Hoboken area). I will not be returning to Mad One Jacks and will inform all of my friends of this experience. There been several times when I have come in after highlights and asked for them to be toned down and appreciate the complimentary service but in my opinion there is no reason why this shouldn't be complimentary especially given what my hair has been through at this salon.... when my stylist Agatka (who has been nothing but a wonderful stylist) was on maternity leave, I went to an apprentice who dyed my hair blonde and completely destroyed/fried my hair after asking for a simple face frame of light brown balayage highlights. Who knew I'd walk out blonde! In order to fix this, she put a toner on my head which dyed my hair red! I never complained (in fact, several of the stylists told me they were impressed at how calm I remained throughout that) and I worked with the salon (spending close to 8 hours in one week there) to make sure the color was rectified....6 months later, my hair is still not the same! One would think the salon would work with me to make sure I am extremely satisfied by the service I receive especially after that experience. And this was not the only experience where I never complained and should have...recently, I came in for an Express Keratin treatment and upon entering the salon and sitting down in the stylist's chair, was informed the keratin treatment wasn't in stock. What kind of customer service is this? I simply asked if any of the other Keratins (the more expensive ones) were available and I could have one of the treatments for the price of the one I was expecting to get and was told "the owner would not approve of this." - Again, what kind of customer service is this? The salon didn't have the decency to call me before coming in to inform me of this? Last night was the last straw with Mad One Jacks - I came in after getting a faceframe balyage last week since my hair seemed extremely bright and all one color with no dimension. I was then scolded when I sat down in the chair by the owner Jack for coming in for "complimentary" services too often - This was insulting and extremely disrespectful for the following reasons: 1) I have never requested that service be complimentary, the only reason I have had to come in several times is because my hair never looks right the first time. 2) I always offer to pay when I come in to fix my hair after I pay the first time and also ALWAYS provide a generous tip when I come in even for a complimentary service. After Jack put toner on two strands of my hair last night and I was in there for no more than 30 minutes, I was initially charged $35 (the price of a full toner put on TWO strands of my hair). When I finally spoke my mind and told the owner it was absolutely ridiculous, this is how he responded: "well your appointment was supposed to be at 8 and you walked in at 6 and you should really ask to apply toner before leaving the salon" - how is that possible when I usually don't know I need it toned down until getting home and after a few days realizing my hair doesn't look right/the lighting in the salon is different? And maybe your stylists shouldn't tell me I can come in to tone it down if it gets too bright Ultimately, he ended up charging me $20 which is still absolutely ridiculous and will be the last $20 I ever give to this salon. Bottomline - customer service is key in this industry and something the owner at Mad One Jacks lacks. read more

Let me just say that Stephanie gave me the best haircut i have had in a veryyyyy long time. She is new to Mad one jacks, however, you'd think she was better then the "pro stylists at the salon" She was super sweet and personable. After moving here from Colorado, home of cheap haircuts and color, I was terrified to get a cut and color but I knew I was looking busted. So I yelped and found Mad One Jacks which is close to my apartment, looked cute, and sounded like it would not break the bank. Well, compared to Denver prices, it did, but it could have been SO much worse. Also, Malinda totally got me and my low maintenance ways, and gave me a great cut and color, and some awesome tips on how to make my hair look super cute, without me spending 30 minutes on it. This place is great and I will definitely be back for regular maintenance of my awesome new 'do. Their hours are very flexible also which is nice. Thumbs up. read more

I've had my hair cut by Brittney twice now, and both times i left feeling like a new person. The first cut I asked her to go a little more conservative and just shape up my hair, and she did exactly that all while teaching me how to control my curls. She didn't try to upsell me on any products and overall just helped me. The second time i asked her to give me a mord edgy style. She asked a bunch of questions and somehow managed to give me an awesome edgy haircut that looks fabulous. I have received SO many compliments. I will never go anywhere else. It's not incredibly expensive here, but more than a chain salon. It is worth every penny! I'm going back in a few days to have her add some color to my hair because i trust her so much! Ok, so happy to try a new salon in my quest to find a favorite NJ salon. Salon was cute, nice theme throughout. I'm not sure I agree with other reviewers about it being edgy, it's edgy the kind of way Ed Harvey is. I thought Shampoo in JC was more edgy, if that's what your looking for. MOJ is a good salon with a nice set-up, love the welcome beverage (coffee, tea, rolling rock, white or red wine ) and I REALLY appricate that I was in and out in an hour. I really hate going to the salon (nail/hair/ect...) And my hair is super thick and dense and it has taken some stylist an hour just to blow it out. So big props for the quickness. I had Sara as my stylist, who is moving to the new location in March. Happy with the cut and experience overall, and I really hate the whole salon experience. I did not find this salon pushy with products, in fact I was given a pretty big free sample of the product used on my hair. read more

Mad One Jacks just rocks my socks. I've searched high and low for a salon that matched (or could steal me away from ;) ) my hometown salon, but I am happily haircutting in Hoboken since M1J. Apart from the fantastic results, they have extremely flexible appointment hours (we're talking up til 10 pm on certain workdays) which are much needed (and appreciated!) by a certain workaholic in need of a haircut! On top of that, they put a glass of wine in my hand while doing it. I've had three separate stylists here, and in each case, I've really appreciated their work. On top of making my hair look fantastic that night (which seriously, if you take a later appointment, you're going to feel ready to hit the town), they really gave me manageable cuts that I could maintain and provided valuable tips on styling on the day to day. I've never been to any other salon where they actually taught me how to manage and 'recreate the look', so I really valued the professional tips and tricks. I tried out several salons in Hoboken prior to M1J with mediocre to horrific experiences. I'm so happy to have found Mad One Jacks. read more

Terrible... I went along for Apprentice Sunday having been convinced that as I was only after having color, this would be 'risk free' given that the colorist would direct the apprentice on the color to apply so it couldn't go wrong. During the consultation the apprentice insisted that the stylists didn't need to be present, as she'd be telling the stylist exactly what I want and they would discuss how to achieve those results before applying any color. I specifically said I wanted a mild treatment (as I am pregnant) , just the roots colored darker (brown) to cover grey and an 'ambre' look. I emphasized that I didn't want ANY warmth and certainly didn't want to look GINGER as it has taken me a year to get rid of the brassy tones in my hair. The colorist proceeded to apply peroxide to half of my head (not just roots) which I kept saying looked very light and smelled very strong given my pregnancy. Despite my constant concern and questioning, they left the color on for the full time and lone behold I walked out with damaged GINGER HAIR The Apprentice and colorist claimed that my requests for 'ambre' look, dark roots, roots only and mild color, had all been lost between them in translation. I actually found Mad One Jacks in 2008 and fell in love. I have lived in the NYC/NJ area for 10 years now and have been to so many salons from Warren Tricomi in NYC, to Mom & Pop places, to chain salons and no one could get me to return to the same salon twice. I was never satisfied enough, although I will say Warren Tricomi does great eyebrow tinting/shaping. I have had my hair cut and colored by "almost" everyone in Mad One Jacks right down to Jack. Everyone is unbelievably talented! It's got a hipster vibe, laid back attitude. They prices are very reasonable and everyone there listens to what your saying/concerns about your hair. I take in pictures and no one laughs. While I'm not expecting to look like the celeb in the pic, they know what I'm trying to achieve. Another perk for me is the hours, they are open late and on Sundays which is awesome for me who works in NYC. What can I say? I heart Mad One Jacks!! read more

I have had my hair cut in some of the trendiest salons in NYC. Fox and Jane, Medusas in park slope, bumble and bumble. However, after a recent move to Hoboken and general laziness about going into the city for a haircut, I decided to try Mad One Jacks. From scheduling the appointment, to my color consultation, everyone was courteous and helpful. They all listened and no one was condescending about my slightly damaged hair, something that was frequent at many other salons I've tried. I ended up getting booked with Princessa as my stylist and she knew exactly what I wanted. She was able to get my blonde balayge to a stunning warm brown, and chopped off my long unruly hair to a sleek bob. This is one of the few hair cuts I've gotten that works if I air dry my naturally wavy to curly hair, but looks easily as good when I blow dry it out. The price was totally fair and afterward I received a post card thanking me for my service. Above all I felt listened to and understood which is rare in a NYC high end salon, and yet got the same quality as one for half the price. Can not recommend this place enough and especially Princessa who truly understands hair. Thanks for the great cut! read more

When I lived in Hoboken, Jack was my stylist- amazing haircut every time!

This has been the worst salon I've ever been to. So overpriced. Apart from that, my hair was completely destroyed. I asked for a balayage and I received random grey and orange portions underneath my hair. While the stylist was doing this she was rushing through the blow dry because she was styling two more clients while she was dyeing my hair. I didn't realize until I got home and saw all the grey and orange underneath my neck . I paid $250 plus tip $30 and the reason why I tipped her is because I wasn't aware of all the grey and orange under my neck . I wanted to cry. It was literally my Christmas gift and it looked terrible. I called the salon the next day . And the receptionist said one of the stylist would call me back . I asked for Jack the 'owner' and she said he was "busy attending a customer" . end of story they never called me back. And I had to dye my own hair black because it was multicolored. Worst experience ever. I DONT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE ! And honestly even if they would have told me to go back to fix it I really wouldn't have. . read more

A few weeks ago on a late Friday afternoon, I impulsively called four different hair salons (3 of which are in Hoboken and the other, my hometown salon) with the hope that at least one would be able to take me that day. My hometown salon could not offer to meet my last minute request while the other 2 Hoboken salons allowed the calls to retrieve voice mail, in which case I did not leave one. The fourth and last attempt to make this much needed yet abrupt appointment was to Mad One Jacks. Almost defeated and expecting unavailability, I called and a very polite voice answered the other end. Knowing that this was my last chance, I apologized, "I know this is very late in the day and a bit of a stretch, but would you be able to take me for a partial highlight and cut this afternoon...like around 4 - 4:30ish?" The polite voice on the other end, replied, "Yes. No problem at all. You're in for 4:30 today with Princessa." I was stoked to say the least. The polite voice took all my information and it was a done deal. Luckily, I live just three blocks away from the salon and made it home from work just in time. As soon as I entered, I was greeted with nice smiles and hellos from the staff as well as a nice size glass of wine. The decor, layout, and music is right up my alley and the overall atmosphere is nothing less than chill. I sat and waited for less than 5 minutes until Princessa introduced herself to me and was ready to cut. For only meeting for the first time and knowing that she had a long day before I arrived, I acknowledged the fact that I may be the customer she hates today. She laughed and I went on to explain the cut and color I was looking for. She began bleaching me up and we shared stories of hairstyles past. I explained that I used to have short-short hair and since then I've been trying to grow it out. At this point, my hair was at my shoulders. I asked if she did short-do's and so she showed me her work. I then showed her pictures of me with mine and she asked, "why do you have hair!??!?!!?!" I laughed but her comment gave me great confidence and I started contemplating cutting it all off again. I'm sure the wine had much to do with this as well. It was time to wash. So, she directed me back to the sinks where I was given a deep conditioning and the best hair wash I have ever received in my life. Paulie, you're a godsend. I get back in the cutting chair and Princessa says, "so we doin' a trim, you'll think about it, and come back for the short do?" Feeling terrible for the fact that she just spent an hour bleaching my head I replied, "I wanna cut it all off." Like a trooper she grabbed her bench, sat down, and began chopping away. Once all was said and done, I felt like me again. I couldn't have been more happier to see me back to normal. I thanked her for being so patient and accommodating. Little does she know, but everyone I see compliments my do, asks who did it, and says it's the best haircut I've had. Essentially, Princessa is the sh*t. After I paid, a very reasonable price, she sent me on my way with a goody bag filled with Paul Mitchell color lock spray, some Mad One Jacks paraphernalia, a sick haircut and a boost of confidence. All-in-all, my Mad One Jacks experience ended up being the best impulse purchase I've ever made. I will absolutely be going back and asking for Princessa when it's time for a shape up. read more

I had high hopes when I read up on this salon so I scheduled a consultation with (what I thought) would be a perfect fit. I show up and said I'm here for my consultation. Some other woman decided to do the consult with me and didn't even introduce herself..so I can't even say who it was. I guess they thought since I haven't been to this salon before I wouldn't know what the person I scheduled my consultation with looked like (hello, you have pictures on your website of your stylists!) I knew the second I sat in that chair to talk hair, it wasn't gonna work. Whoever I was talking to wasn't rude or anything, but didn't even try to give me hair suggestions. I normally do my own hair, but thought I'd take the chance and have someone else do it. What a bust. Waste of time.. Went here for my second cut and I was very impressed. I saw Brittini and she was extremely knowledgeable about how I can make small changes without spending any extra money to save my hair from damage. Pros: free bang trims (gotta love it), super friendly staff, comfortable environment, they sent a card after my first cut to just say thanks for trying them, and when I came back for my second cut the different stylist knew exactly how my hair was cut last time (who cut it, what techniques and products they used) to follow up if I wanted the same thing again. soo, I was impressed and would recommend this to someone looking for a quality hair cut at an affordable price ($60) in the typically not-so-affordable hudson county. Literally the worst experience of my life. I came here a couple of months ago for some highlights and a hair cut. My hair dresser was super super sweet and seemed quite knowledgeable. The end result was super brassy but I just thought it was maybe the lighting. After I got home and about a week later I noticed that there were a few pieces which weren't toned at all. I assumed it was because maybe the assistant was new and just let it go. I figured I'd share it with my hair dresser at the next appt. genuinely thought it was just a change of toner and more attention to detail kind of thing and I was fine letting it go. I went back on Saturday for a balayage. I also told my hair dresser about the uneven tone and, being the sweetheart she is, totally apologized and offered to tone me herself and we also discussed changing the toner. Literally thought all was good. She does my full highlight like a champ and I chill and process. FFWD an hour or so my hair literally looks ORANGE. I have super dark, thick hair and do understand bouncing between dark and light takes some time and is a process. However I've been doing this for ten years and have never been ORANGE. Not to mention this was my second round of highlights and being someone seasoned to coloring my hair I knew this wasn't right. Again I thought maybe toner would help and in the salon it didn't look half bad. Five days later, and of course after a couple of washes, my hair is literally streaky, chunky, uneven, and variations of orange and blonde. I literally had 3 different colors in my hair. I contemplated going back to fix it, which I am sure they would have, but clearly if after two times she wasn't able to do it properly it was apparent that it would not be a success. I ended up finding a different salon in englewood and she color corrected me (for 7 hours) and I was able to achieve the original color I wanted. I emailed my complaint however have not heard a response. I honestly don't care at this point I just want people to avoid going through the same money pit and stress I went through. Color is a difficult skill and I don't think it is one mastered for dark hair here. read more

Amazing is the only word I can use to sum up my experience at Mad One Jack's. I went to Princessa on a referral from my friend, and she was every bit the magical being described to me. My hair wasn't growing out well from the last cut, and to me seemed flat and not sexy. She understood exactly what I wanted, and gave it to me, even noting that I had curly hair naturally. I finally decided to stop going home for haircuts and try a place in Hoboken. I'm glad I did. Mad One Jacks is a great experience for a good price- level 1 haircuts (which are great) are only $50! When you walk in you are greeted and offered a beverage (water, soda, beer or wine). While they are washing your hair they do a great scalp massage, followed by a should rub after. Stephanie was great, asking me what I liked, didn't like and wanted to do with my hair. She offered a good suggestion, but was not pushy about it at all. I loved my haircut and style. I liked d fact that she took time to speak to us about the expectations from the treatment without trying to sell it to us. This place is wonderful! I love my color from Kristi and cut from Diana. Everyone there was extremely friendly and fun. Plus, they gave me wine when I walked in the door. I can never decide what I want to do with my hair and both gave me excellent recommendations. I even got a free goodie bag for being a first timer that included a generous-sized travel shampoo. I hate to put a damper on the reviews, but I had a very bad experience. In an effort to save money on hair color services, I decided to try Mad One Jacks and the PM Shine. (My usual colorist is $200 for highlights so the $60 at MOJ would have been great.) I went in with medium brown hair and came out with jet black hair a la the Addams Family. That was FAR from my request to just cover some grays. Its not a good thing when your co-workers eventually tell you the change was shocking. I went on a Saturday morning and found the salon to be chaotic. They were shuffling all of us with color from one place to the next trying to make room at the sinks. I also should have known I was in trouble when I overheard someone asking where my stylist was and the answer was "She's running around here panicking." Unfortunately I was not impressed. I really wanted the PM Shine to work and I really wanted to like this salon based on the reviews. read more

I recently had my hair done there by the owner. For $225 for a partial highlight and a cut , my hair was overprocessed and towned down. I left the salon with hair that looked low lighted in indoor light. For being a top paid stylist , I expect better. Especially when I have had my hair highlighted by others including new stylists who did well but were just a little slower. I also ended up tipping out him and his assistant which brought the total to $280 for the worst hair color of my life. I have been paying people for fifteen years to be light blond and not dishwater blond which is what I have now. I would rather sit in silence then feel obligated to answer someones obviously disinterested attempt at chit chat . I don't think it's even worth going back for an attempted fix. Kuddos to Britney and assistant!!! I've been pretty scared of trying new hair salons since I have long tresses and every salon I went to, just cut them as and how they wished. This was my maiden one with Mad one jacks and I'm already a huge fan... I really liked the way Britney's assistant washed my hair and gave me a good soothing massage. Later on Britney came and heard all what I needed. She never imposed her ideas but was creative and took care about the minutest detail. My hair was one of the longest she said she had seen in years and I in turn didn't want my tresses to be cut too short. She took a very conservative approach which I really appreciate and made it a point to ask after each step if it was OK to go ahead. This is something which I have never seen in salons I've tried before. The best part is yet to come... the styling takes the cake. I felt my hair was feather-soft and gorgeous for days together...
