I found Mad One Jacks on Instagram after reading an article about Calligraphy Cuts in Refinery29. I have thin and fine hair so was curious about an option that might help volumize. I booked with Jack and the experience was fantastic overall. My last haircut was awful because the stylist didn't listen and went too short. I like to still be able to put my hair up because I have a toddler. Jack explained what the calligraphy cut might and might not do for my specific hair. He managed expectations well! He washed my hair - let's be honest, the best part for most people! The cut was cool to watch with the calligraphy tool, and then there was a deep, 10 min long, conditioning treatment, included. The idea being, once the hair is cut this specific way, it should absorb moisturizers and volumizing products more easily. Then he rinsed and we moved onto a bit of clean up and styling. I love this cut. I'm including a photo of how it looks just "wash and go" for me, since that's how it'll be 99% of the time and I'm so glad it's a nice layering cut that I can still put up in a bun, but adds more movement and texture! Mad One Jacks isn't local to me, but it was worth the 45 min drive and I'll be back! read more

DISAPPOINTED AND FRUSTRATED...I don't like to be harsh and point fingers on a public domain because we are all human and make mistakes but I just cannot believe how the employees at this salon take no accountability for their mistakes. The positive that I can point out is that the owner is nice. BE CAREFUL of the inexperienced colorist. Just 2 weeks working at the salon and does not know how to use the salon's coloring formula, she stressed her inexperience to me as she struggled with coloring my hair. The hair did wind up looking good after her 2 attempts at color during that first appt. I left happy, however the new color washed out entirely by Day 6 for the $160 service...DISAPPOINTED. BEWARE of attitude and unprofessionalism at the front desk by ppl who haven't yet mastered costumer service. BIG ATTITUDE by woman who checked me in to correct the color. I expected the color to be corrected for free and even had the owner's approval of no charge prior to my color correction appt. Different tune was sung upon check-in. Unfortunately the owner was not there so I was told I could be charged for more services depending on what the colorist determines...left FRUSTRATED because I didn't want to risk being charged again. I was not happy that there was any consideration to charge me to fix their mistake. The Check-in lady then called defending herself and the inexperienced colorist by saying that I am just not happy with anyone doing my hair??Ummm...hair dye washed out in less than a week and I am expected to be a satisfied customer?? No thank you to your color correction offer when it comes with attitude and potential extra fees...You'd have to be MAD to come here. read more

Today was my second time at MOJ and omg what a disaster... Scheduled an appointment last minute, which was then rescheduled with a different stylist - Jack. Came in, explained that I just want a simple cut, 1-2 inch, NO layers, some framing around face. He cut good 3-4 inch, did layers and the so-called framing that looks like he just chopped my hair off by a mistake... I really wanted this place to be my go to, but will not come back. Going to cut my hair short next week to get rid of the layers...many thanks! read more

This is a unique place with cool decor and late hours. Their text in format is cool to book appts. I had my bday haircut here and was treated well. I was offered advice about products but was excited for the brief shoulder massage but didn't get it. I didn't ask so I'll cl it even. They do move your appts around alot, something's last minute, but I run a small business and know how it can. Be. It's also a pandemic so they're very stressed. The price is expensive, even for Hoboken it's too pricey. In my home town I call still find cuts and styles for 30 or 40 total. And I walked out of there paying just about 100, since I always include a generous tip. I believe the cut and blow dry was 80 or 85. Im low income so these prices are hard to pay and I'll cut my hair once or twice a year. Overall they're genuinely kind and the atmosphere relaxing. I recommend giving them a chance . read more

The stylists at mad one jacks are incredible. I came in with a terrible knot in my hair that I was not able to get out after hours and it increasingly became tighter and bigger. I live local and knew they were usually open late. I called and begged for help and my call was returned within moments and they saw me 30 minutes later. Two women worked on my hair for about an hour- they were incredibly kind and would not accept any sort of payment. I didn't catch their names but I am so appreciative of their kindness and support. If you haven't figured it out, this place is on 1st and Madison and the owner is Jack (Mad, One, Jack...duh). I live about 100 feet from their front door, so it was natural that I had to check this place out when I first moved to Hoboken. I usually have to try out 3 or 4 different salons before I get comfortable with a new one, but I've been incredibly happy with MOJ since the first time I stepped in there. Jack is a great stylist and cuts great hair. Some of the perks include your choice of drink (booze or no booze), hot face towel and a great shampoo with a variety of products. However, the best perk for guys, IMO, is the complimentary clean-up service. Simply give Jack a ring and he'll be more than happy to clean you up free-of charge. While the price for a haircut here may be high (no higher than any other high-end salon, however), the clean-up service definitely helps increase your time between haircuts and always keeps you looking fresh. Also, I'm amazed at what they do with womens hair there...amazing stuff. read more

About to check in for my second cut here, so I guess that is a good sign, I will start by saying that I went to the same person in my hometown FOREVER. I was always nervous to have my hair cut by someone else because I strayed once and paid for it hardcore by sporting a bowl cut as a 16 year old teenage girl. Traumatizing. Yeah I am 34 now and was still going to that same person, up until now. Anyways, enough about me. I really like this place. I went to Princessa based on what I read about her. She was a doll and totally accepted me for the crazy hair person I am, ie super scared of going to someone new. She took the time to listen and then teach me about what she was doing, even down to the type of conditioner she used. Loved the cut and the overall atmosphere (clearly because I am going back). The one star was lost on me for 2 reasons: its sometimes challenging to get an appointment (stylists book up fast) and I REALLY dislike their new policy about wanting to keep your credit card number on file. As someone who has had credit card fraud recently, this makes me very uncomfortable. I get that you want to protect your business from people who dont show up, but dont punish the people who do show up. read more

This is a salon after my own heart: funky, fun, and professional. I scheduled an appointment for partial highlights and a cut with Yanni after my friend recommended her. Yanni is the coolest! She made me feel comfortable, listened to what I wanted, and spent a good amount of time discussing my options with me. I usually don't like when stylists make small talk with me, but I found myself wanting to chat with Yanni - she is a very fun and friendly young woman. I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the salon - it has what I would describe as a punk vibe. The energy is really great, and they offer you complimentary beer, wine, water, coffee, tea, whatever you want. I left the salon in about 2 1/2 hours with new highlights and a cut that I love. The prices are pretty steep, but it's nothing out of the ordinary for Hoboken/NYC metro. In addition, they gave me a little bag for new customers. I went here for the first time a few weeks ago and was so pleased with the customer service, attentiveness, end result, and follow up after my appointment. I'm usually extremely loyal to my stylist in NYC, but a recent foot surgery left me unable to commute from Hoboken. A friend recommended Mad One Jacks, so I made an appointment with Meredith, a senior stylist. The vibe of the salon itself is cool, and the staff was just so nice and accommodating. I explained to Meredith and the woman that washed my hair (didn't get her name) that I was concerned about losing more hair than usual with the recent trauma and stress, and they were able to recommend products and a cut that would alleviate some of my insecurities. I left with a really flattering, current haircut and style that I can replicate at home, as well as a little welcome bag of promotional and sample hair care items. I even received a follow up note from Meredith wishing me a quick recovery, which was such a thoughtful touch. I heard great things about Mad One Jacks and was excited to get my color done here. I got my COVID shot the day before my appointment, ended up getting bad side effects, and called multiple times the morning of to reschedule. I finally got ahold of a man named Jack two and a half hours before my appointment. I explained that I had a fever, was sweating and did not think I could make my appointment but would love to reschedule. The man on the phone asked me to reconsider and that he would not be able to fill the appointment and that I would be salvaging the stylists night if I came in. I agreed as I felt so guilty and hung up. After contemplating for few minutes, I called back and stated that I really did not feel well and did not want to put the stylist through that. The man repeated what I said and hung up, not even offering to reschedule me. I know we are all stressed due to COVID and that everyone is trying to make ends meet, but expected more from an establishment especially after having a fever. I never write reviews but I just had THE worst experience at Mad One Jacks. My stylist was the owner, Jack. I stopped in yesterday to book the appointment and we talked through what I was looking for then. I am leaving for a little trip and wanted to get a haircut and see if there was a way to tone my blonde hair. To me, it was a little yellow and I prefer a white, milky blonde. Tonight, we talked again about what I was looking for and showed him a picture of my hair that I really like from when it was first highlighted and he noted it was achievable. Fast forward, he's drying my hair and I mention that I'm not sure if it's the lighting but I think my hair looks very dark. He gets visibly upset and angry. It was just all downhill from there. My hair is literally brown. He was very emotionally charged and it came off as aggressive. He was scoffing under his breath "looks brown?! okay whatever," "we missed the mark on this one," "I should have never put toner on your hair, "the picture you showed was exactly how your hair looked, I made it look nice." It was awful customer service and so unprofessional. Save yourself the aggravation and DO NOT book an appointment here. Such a terrible experience, avoid. read more

Worst bangs trim I ever got in my life was here. The stylist talked the whole time about his love life and wasn't paying attention and gave me a lopsided haircut that made me look like Dr. Spock. What's worse, is that I had a music video shoot the next morning and looked terrible in it. It ruined the entire look. I called to complain and they wouldn't give me my money back - they said they were happy to "fix it" (ie chop off MORE hair...uhh, no thanks) but other than that, they were completely unapologetic and arrogant. It took TWO YEARS for other stylists to gradually correct this incompetent stylist's mistake (by the way, he was one of their senior stylists, not an apprentice.) This is one of those "we're trying sooo hard to be 'cool'" places. A hip logo and quirky decor do not compensate for the lack of professionalism and talent at this place. Terrible attitude. OK looking girls go in, smoking hot babes come out. Seriously, I live in the building and I've seen it happen countless times. Great color and cuts. I've also had my hair cut there on occasion, and while I don't exit looking like a hot babe, I look the best I can look with what the good lord has given me. This review is for Stephanie Diaz, who is relatively new to the salon, and whom I am really excited to have working closer to my hometown of North Bergen!! (woot woot!) I have been working with her for a few years now and I absolutely love what she does to my hair. In terms of creativity, she just blows it out of the park. You can come in with an idea of what you want, and she will bring your idea into a reality. I recently had my wedding this past June, and Steph did everyone's hair masterfully, and in record time (I'm talking about 5 Bridesmaids, 2 Mothers and the Bride herself done in 6 hours!). I should also add, the wedding was Great Gatsby/1920s theme, and she had those finger waves and pin curls done to the "T". Just everything was perfect and all my bridesmaids couldn't believe how amazing their hair came out. My own mother, the MOB, looked in the mirror and exclaimed, "OMG, I don't look like myself!" Since then, she's been a die hard Stephanie Diaz Hair fan as well. You really can never go wrong when you book an appointment with Stephanie. My roommate and I purchased a groupon for Mad Jack's. We usually go to a place in JC, but this seemed like a good deal. I believe the groupon deal was "$25 for a $50 hair cut." I called up for an appointment and spoke with the owner, Jack. He made my appointment and gave me the name of the person who would be cutting my hair, and he noted this was my first time at the salon. When I walked in, I was offered a drink, my roommate, who was a few minutes behind me (who was parking the car), was not offered anything on her arrival. The "waiting area" was a tiny little area off to the side, and I felt like I was on the stylist next to us - who turned out to be my stylist. The best part of the whole experience was the guy who washed my hair. He was SUPER sweet and SUPER attentive. Very friendly and gave a great shoulder massage. After my hair was washed, my stylist came over. I explained exactly how I wanted my haircut. She dried my hair explaining that she liked to cut dry hair. In all the years I've had hair cuts, I have never had a hair stylist do it dry, but she's the professional, right? She seemed VERY unsure of what she was doing. I explained to her I do a lot of damage between the hair dry, hair straightener or the curling iron. My stylist insisted she show my how to "properly" CURL my hair with a straightening iron. I told her I had a curling iron, there wasn't really a need. But she did it anyway, and kept having it to it over, because of mistakes. After, I went to pay and was informed that I owned an additional $10 besides the tip, because my stylist does "$60" haircuts - which was NOT stated on the groupon. I do understand some salons do tiered styling, but this was NOT mentioned at all. They ONLY mentioned the name of my stylist. My roommate on the other hand was informed her haircut was an $80 one, due to her stylist. In addition to the WAY overpriced haircuts, they weren't even that good. I just got the best haircut of my life from Malinda at Mad One Jacks... I'm talking about the kind of haircut that makes you feel like a theme song should be playing when you walk outside to reveal it to the world!!! I have curly hair - and have always dreaded getting my hair cut as all stylists claim they know how to cut curly hair well. I always walk out of the salon knowing that I have to go home and fix whatever atrocity they have created with my hair before they set me free and being comforted by the fact that most haircuts are covered by the curliness of my hair. Not the case Friday. I found the salon through Yelp (of course) and it was my 4 year wedding anniversary. Instead of a massage, I opted for a nice new haircut as my 'present' and I am so glad I did. (being a new mom... I'm all about saving and don't have much money for splurging) Malinda asked me about myself and what I wanted for my hair and she delivered the most amazing cut and style for me. The only negative part of the whole experience was that I never got the green tea that was offered to me, but in their defense, I didn't ask for it once I realized they had forgotten it and really.. what does it matter when you have an AWESOME haircut that makes you feel great? Mad One Jacks, I will be back. And I NEVER return to the same place or same person, as I've never been nearly as happy with a cut before.. but Malinda... you are my new go to person for curly hair happiness!!!! I cannot say enough great things about Sarah at the Hudson St location. I came in after someone had basically turned my highlights orange. She must have taken about 3 hours to make sure she could fix it to the best of her ability. Her work is impeccable and she got rid of about 90% of the orange. Not only is she wonderful at what she does - but she is so enjoyable to sit with for 3 hours and chat with. Mad One Jacks has definitely earned another client ! Let me start off by saying Jack is really nice and did a great job with my hair. Meredith is also really cool. - She helped Jack. I got a hair cut and partial highlights. My only issue was - I think it was reallly overpriced. I paid $280 for highlights and a haircut. The website says 120+ for partial highlights and $60-80 for hair cut. I ended up paying $80 for hair cut and $200 for partial highlights which I think was kinda expensive. No complaints about the work or the facility. I went to the one right across the Path at 22 Hudson Place - kinda noisy since they leave the giant french windows open. But everyone was super nice, they gave me a same-day appointment. The hair cut is OK, I feel like I've gotten a similar hair cut for $35 bucks. The highlights are great - exactly the color I wanted. Bottomline: They do a decent job but prepare to pay. I don't know if I'd go back because for almost $300, I feel like I should've gotten more. read more

So happy to have found a new salon since moving back to Joisey from Cali. I am VERY picky with salons and had seen the same girl at my old salon for the past 4 years. My old salon was also a Paul Mitchell salon, so I was very excited when I saw this one was. What I first noticed, being the insane, crazed, fanatic dog owner I am, is the dog treat jars and how there are signs saying they're pet friendly, and how you can bring your dog in with you! They even have little pups running around the shop. So adorable! The decor of this place is Alice in Wonderland meets hair salon. It's whimsical and dramatic but very comfortable at the same time and even private. I'm not really one for the very open-industrial and cold salons. I love how much character, and charm this place has. It also has plenty of artwork hanging up to keeps things visually appealing--and they change artists frequently. Each appointment, if it's your first time, comes with a consultation. I went to Malinda, who is a senior stylist. The salon has senior & junior stylists, the former obviously costing you more. Malinda listened to exactly what I wanted and offered advice. She knew what she was doing and it showed. She was also easy going, conversational and funny. She really made me feel comfortable and it was fun chatting with her. I got a great hair color and cut and exactly what I had wanted. Everyone on staff was incredibly friendly. The prices are fair by the areas' standards (some places I found cost less but do not even include a blow-out - so end up costing more). But there are little touches that make this place go above and far beyond. The first is that you get your choice of complimentary tea, coffee, water, wine or beer. I had a glass of white wine that was lovely. Second, you get a WONDERFUL scalp massage and shampoo. Jason did my shampoo and it was aaamazing. I could have fell asleep. And then, you get a neck and shoulder rub. What?!? When Jason came over to me and told me to relax my shoulders, I had no idea what was going on. It was lovely, and Jason was so sweet and friendly. And if it's your first visit, you get a free little gift. Mine included a mini conditioner bottle, pen and nail file. Happy to have found my new salon :) read more

EEK- (Let me first say that the staff was extremely nice and attentive) I went in to color my dark brown hair to a light golden brown. 1st try: orange / 2nd try: dark brown with brass undertones. I went back the next day for a "fix". 3rd try: yellow and brassy / 4th try: dark brown. I don't recommend going in for color. I'm extremely upset with my result. 4 different stylists couldn't get me to the color I set out for? Wild. After a total of 6 hours across 2 days, it's been quite the salon experience. #bummed because I paid a decent amount of money both times and walked out basically with the same result twice. I've had a few bad experiences with local stylists, my situation is not an easy one to deal with and I was incredibly hesitant to waste more time, money and damage my hair further. I found Mad One Jacks on Yelp and liked what I read. Recently I found out one of the girls in my office has been using a stylist at the salon for years and that forced me to take the plunge. I did my research, selected a stylist (Rowena), explained all my hair issues and went in for a consultation. Rowena was genuinely concerned about doing a good job and suggested a strand test. Finally got my hair done yesterday and I just cannot express how happy I am! The cut, the color, the highlights are all AMAZING. The staff at the salon are friendly, professional and Rowena is just incredible. I will say I was a little shocked at the price, YES it was expensive.. but you get what you pay for and it's worth every penny. I actually found Mad One Jacks thru Yelp, and I am so happy I did... They are a really great Paul Mitchell salon, and Michael is an awesome stylist- very friendly and actually listened to what I wanted. I love the atmosphere too, its nice that they give you a drink when you come in. I've seen "Jack" himself on a few occasions and he's a very chill dude. The only thing I would complain about is the price... but I guess that's to be expected with the level of salon this is. Overall- great find, and great location. read more

Rowena gave me a phenomenal cut and color! I have gone to the same person for upwards of six years now for my hair color and cut...and in a desperate pinch (ie going on vacation with no time to drive an hour home to see my regular girl) I made an appointment with Rowena. She was quick, attentive and even sent a follow up post card to me! MOJ's is great because they cater to us with crazy long city hours (they're open til 11 at least 2 nights a week!) and they are always offering you somethng to drink. I had an amazing experience at Mad One Jacks! I found Mad One Jacks via Yelp and decided to give it a try based on the good reviews and because I was looking for a new place to go after my hairdresser left NJ to move to Colombia (and didn't even tell me!). Before I get into the actual visit, I just want to say that I love how you can schedule an appointment online! They call you back to confirm details, but I really love being able to do this. My hair needed serious help (my old hair dresser damaged my hair and made it too blonde- she went crazy on the highlights). Rowena was very patient, knowledgable, and friendly. I could definitely tell she knew what she was talking about! I also liked that she involved me in the process- it was a learning experience for me. Another plus is how well everyone worked together as a team- Rowena bounced ideas off the other stylists and was able to come up with the best solution for my hair. On top of fixing my color, Rowena gave me a cut that works with my wavy hair- it looks great when I blow it straight, but also accentuates the curls when I leave it wavy. I also enjoyed the many glasses of wine and the goody bag at the end. Even though Hoboken is a bit of a drive for me, Mad One Jacks has now become my regular place. I went here because my normal place is closed for renovations. I'm really glad I did. My stylist was Princessa and she did a great job. It took almost 30 minutes when all was said and done but that is because she redid my entire hairline in the back and kept it looking natural. I could tell she spent due time on the details. She did exactly what I was looking for with a hipster twist. I was looking for a subtle change from what I am used to and that is what I got. Very impressed. Princessa also has a hot hairstyle, which is a plus in my book. The place is very trendy and clean inside. While you wait you can peruse a book filled with Banksy art while drinking your complimentary beer. Once in the chair, you get a wash, conditioner, a hot towel with a short facial massage, and top notch cut. Overall this was a great experience and I even got a complimentary shampoo on my way out. It was a little more ($50) than I normally spend but it will still be a difficult decision once my normal place comes back after renovations. read more

I ADORE Mad One Jack's. I went on a friend's recommendation to get highlights (yes, I have brown skin and I went a little blonde last summer)....I walk in and the receptionist asks me "what do you want to drink?" I immediately assume she's got water or soda. I ask what she's got. She replies "beer, wine, sangria, tea, or coffee". Those little cartoon hearts bug out of my eyes. I have been to Mad One Jacks 3-4 times now. I found the place via Google maps plus the reviews in Yelp. It's a great salon with a great and friendly staff. Michael is an excellent stylist and I had no problems whatsoever. Very sociable. Atmosphere is great and you can get a complimentary drink (soda/beer/wine) too. Parking can be a pain given the restrictions so do set aside of time for finding a spot nearby. Price-wise, it's a bit high, but I think the value and service is worth it. Plus it beats going into NYC. Also, they do offer a trim cut for a low price in case you need to do a fresh up before an important meet/greet, interview, event. Takes about 15-20 minutes (I think). I saw all the reviews online and thought Id give this salon a try. Besides the hours working great for my schedule I liked the atmosphere of the salon, low key but good products. You also get a beer or wine! I had Brittney and she was very personable and had great suggestions for my hair. She did a good job with the hair cut and I would def go back. I do think it is a little over priced however comparative to other places in the area $60 for a wash/cut/blow dry is not too bad. I would add they say you get a complimentary massage.. however just be aware that it is less than an one minute shoulder rub. read more

I was looking to find a last minute partial highlight and haircut before New Year's Eve but wasn't able to find a salon that could accomodate my work hours. After hearing some great reviews on Yelp, I visited MOJ's website and found that they have Tues/Thur hours until midnight! Jack was incredibly accomodating and fit me in with Kristin for the color (It looks incredibly natural!) and Jack gave me possibly the best haircut that I've ever received. I have pretty run of the mill straight, long hair. Somehow, he gave it depth and movement that I never imagined possible. . .Long story short, I left there feeling like a super model! I didn't experience the hot towel/chair massage that everyone raved about in their reviews, but considering that they added me in last minute, I'm more than okay waiting for my next visit. On another note, it turns out that they are closing for the first two weeks of January to give the salon a facelife. (Honestly, I can't imagine what they'll do to make the place any cooler than it already is.) PROS: Amazing Stylists // Fantastic Hours // Close to the 2nd St Light Rail Stop // Complimentary Coffee/Hot Cocoa/Beer/Wine, etc // Cool Ambiance CONS: Not horribly expensive. . .but don't go in thinking that you'll get a super cheap 'do // They do push their products a *little* hard, but then again I'm yet to visit a salon that doesn't. **They prefer not to add on tips to your credit card, so bring cash or a check . .. they do make exceptions for first time visitors and those in a pinch** read more

I decided to try this place out based upon the great yelp reviews and the $25 off promotion they were running on Highlights. The salon has a great vibe to it and everyone was very friendly...and if that wasn't enough...they offer you beer or wine throughout your stay (other salons should take note) Kristi did my color, we chatted first about what I wanted and what I didn't want...unfortunately at first the color fell into the category of "what I didn't want". BUT...Kristi patiently and carefully corrected the situation. She is extremely sweet and I left VERY happy with the results. Brittini did my cut and I was really thrilled with that as well. Best Salon! I've lived in the NYC/NJ area for the past 11 yrs and have spent oodles on my hair/eyebrows... this salon is off the beaten path in Hoboken NJ and absolutely amazing. I researched a few years back (08) and went here solely based on what I read and have been hooked ever since. Everyone there has pretty much cut my hair, even Jack & Kristi is amazing. They have late hours, are open 6 days a week & serve beer & wine. Love this place! Oh and I like that they don't have a million different brands of products that they're pushing. Was driving through Hoboken one day and really needed a haircut, I look up and there is Mad One Jacks. They fit me and and I was pleased with the cut, it was really good, modern without being ostentatious. The stylist wasn't really paying attention to what I was saying but in the end I recommend my hair when I got home and it was fine. The following month I needed another cut. This time I wound up with Jack... THE Jack. He is a master! Have me the right cut for my thin hair... carried on a good conversation too. In the end he introduced me to the woman who cuts his hair so now I have a choice if he is not available. Without a doubt I recommend Mad One Jacks with no hesitancy whatsoever.
