Fuck this Macy's. I bought a jacket. Salesperson rung it up and asked if I wanted a bag. Well, "of course, I want a bag." I said. I didn't want to walk outta the store looking like I ripped something off. Apparently there's a tax in D.C. that they charge for "bag usage" at Macy's. I was unaware of this tax. So I got back to my hotel room and looked at my receipt. This Macy's charges 5 cents for a fucking plastic bag!!!! 5 fuckin cents FOR a bag people! Granted it's 5 fuckin cents this really pissed me off, especially by a major retailer such as Macy's. I don't know what pissed me off more, that the salesperson didn't inform me that they charge for bags. (Which, in retrospect, is why she asked me if I wanted one.) Or that I was being taken for a nickel. Salesperson could've just said "we charge a nickel for a bag would you like one?" Well, hell NO. I hate Macy's Corporation. And this isn't an "oh, I totally hate Uggs" kind of hate, it's a "Macy's is a soul-sucking, small town-crippling, heinous Coach purse-hawking behemoth that is ruining the retail industry and all it should stand for" kind of hate. So, needless to say, it's a really freaking big deal for me to even go into a Macy's, much less purchase something from there. I was in dire need of a faboo and cheap cocktail dress and I found one on macys.com. I tried looking elsewhere for a dress but with no luck I ordered it. As predicted with the crappiness that is Macy's, the dress was nothing like the picture and was made of the cheapest nastiest fabric. It was horrid. Last Saturday my bff and I ran into Macy's to return said "dress" (sparkly trashbag might be more appropriate) and decided to peruse the lingerie section since they were having a sale. The saleswomen were all great: very helpful, funny, and I was impressed that they seemed to be having a good time in the midst of the crazy holiday season. I left Macy's slightly more impressed, but still with a serious chip on my shoulder about having to carry a Macy's bag around. It just seems so wrong to me. After a quick bite to eat, my bff and I returned to Macy's later in the evening because I wanted to stop by the MAC counter to get some false lashes to wear to my big soiree that evening. The ladies at the counter could not have been more fun! They were so nice and helpful and I felt like I made new friends. One of them (I'm so upset I didn't ask her name) offered to apply all of my eye makeup, and it turned out fantastic. They also applied my lashes for me and the whole look was awesome. I hate to say it, but I will most definitely return to this Macy's for the MAC counter. But I still refuse to go to any other Macy's. I promise. read more

Macy's Metro Center (formerly Hecht's) is a pretty deccent department store. It is a shame it stands on its own at metro center without much other shopping close by. Macy's has a little bit of everything. It is a bit pricy. I spent quite a bit more than I planned, even with the 20% off coupon I used. The salespeople were very helpful. They were also very good at adding more merchandise to my pile. They have a good selection of brand names and even some of Macy's own brands. The store is easy to find directly above Metro Center. I recommend checking it out if you want a nice department store shopping experience. read more

I bought some clothes for my husband on the men's department. First of all the staff were more busy talking to each other when I wanted to pay. Once I got back and showed my husband what got for him, I noticed that on all 3 pieces I bought, the security tag was still on it. When I left the store no alarm went off or anything. So I got back to the register where I paid the clothes. Again had to wait and search for an associate. Not sure if it was the same guy who also helped me when I bought it. So I told him the whole story. With a nasty tone he asked me for the receipt. No apologies or anything. So I asked for his manager. Another very unresponsive person. At least an apology you would expect. Not here. Just left the store. Rethinking if I should return everything. This store sucks when it comes to customer service skills. Never again! read more

Uh, no. I had an uncomfortable time here this past Saturday. Walked in and found the salespeople working there to be catty and rude. One pair of saleswomen at one make-up counter snickered at me and said "She look [sic] like an old man." And they repeated it a few times until I turned to see them, and they looked at me with this expression that read "Yeah, bitch, we're talking about you, but we're gonna act like we didn't." I guess those heffahs don't care about something called "commission".... I've never been called an "old man" before. I'm female, act it and look it. I know I've been tired lately and it shows on my face and that it was colder than hell frozen over on Saturday so I was layered like I was living in the tundra, but come on. Show some respect and class towards potential customers. And when I got to the clothing section, having two more saleswomen stare at me like I was going to steal made me feel uncomfortable. "Black woman shopping" indeed! I went to find a few sweaters and was disappointed. The affordable ones were matronly, shapeless and of a harsh material, and the few ones I thought were cute were overpriced. Don't get me started on the shoes---$100 for something that's ON SALE?! I walked out without anything. I wanted to spend my first day out during the New Year shopping, and this was such a horrid experience. I won't be going back to that Macy's. Psh. read more

I was really looking forward to discovering a new Macy's location in the DC metro area, but my recent trip will be the first and last time I ever step into that location. The store itself is 5 floors, convenient to metro center stop, and clean. However the associates were EXTREMELY rude to myself and my 53-year old mother. A group of female employees were standing around cackling, so we just walked by. Or tried to. One of them bumped into my mother, did not apologize. My mother said "excuse me". Apparently those three women could not be bothered to say sorry to a customer , and instead gave us incredible attitude for NO REASON. We asked for a manager to be called, and you would swear WWIII had begun. All three continued to YELL and harass us as we walked off to find a supervisor. Please avoid this store. The supervisor intimated that these types of incidents are quite regular. Shocking and disappointing. Go to ANY other Macy's. Love Macy's, just not this location. read more

The downtown location for this Macy's is good. Unfortunately, that is pretty much the only thing good about this store. The selection is more downscale than most Macy's, the layout is disorganized, the store is dirty, and the sales representatives are almost nonexistent. I ended up giving up and heading out to Pentagon City instead. read more

Okay, so it's not that expensive here, but after a week of volunteering I needed some personal clothing items and some extra sweat pants. The best I could find were semi-schmancy clothes. Sad. Macy's is ok. For my money, I prefer Nordstroms--they carry many of the same brands, and I feel that Nordstroms provides a much more enjoyable shopping experience. But, this isn't a review of Nordstroms. Moving right along. I love the shoe department the most. Big suprise there. It's one of the more nicely laid out departments in the store--some of the other ones can get a bit messy after people have been shopping them all day. Also, there is almost too much selection. This might not be an issue for some people, but for me, when presented with too many options, I tend to just leave (unless I'm looking for something specific). This place is alot nicer since Macy's took it over (it used to be Hecht's). If you haven't been there since, it's worth a trip back. And it's so convinient, right above the Metro:) read more

EVERY time I come here, they're not at the counters, they're understaffed, they're not attentive to customers, and they're spread out playing with the displays instead of helping customers standing near, looking at them, waiting for their service. Well anyway - this review doesn't pertain this particular store - but just Macy's in general. Don't send me all your stinkin' emails to shop online - and then when I actually go online because there's something I really want to buy and I have zero time to get to an actual store and then you tell me that your site is unavailable because your server can't handle all of your customers!! There is a young sales lady in the makeup department who is outstanding. When I first met her months ago, she was helping demo an Estee Lauder BB cream, applying it to customers. Not only was she welcoming to me as a walk-up, but when she saw that the BB cream didn't complement my skin, she told me so and went to the trouble of finding a different product to try. (In fact, I later decided to buy it!) Fast forward several months, I stopped by the make up department yesterday, and the same sales lady was stationed at a different counter - Clinique, this time. She recognized and greeted me immediately and remembered what product she had used before. And we had a nice little chat. What a great sales lady this Macy's has on its team! read more

This isn't the world's best Macy's, but its close to work so its convenient for a number of things. I've dropped in here for a little shopping at lunch time, to pick up communal/"group" gifts for work as needed, and its been a godsend when I've ended up wearing my lunch and then had a sudden "big" meeting where I have to look impeccable at work. I've scored some nice deals here on the sale racks and never had a problem being able to check out when I needed (save for down in handbags). But this is also not the Macy's I'd choose to go if I needed extensive sales help either as other than the 1st floor triangle of salesperson social hour hell (er.... jewelry/cosmetics to shoes to handbags) I've only seen the staff sparsely populating the rest of the store. read more

Although this Macy's location is about 10 minutes walking distance from my house, I think I'm going to stick to Pentagon City location for my Macy's needs. As a department store chain, Macy's is great. There are always sales and promotions going on, and there can be fantastic deals to be had. However, this location's sense of...how can I say this...CHAOS...doesn't make it the most conducive environment for productive shopping. (And no, the craziness or disorderliness is not just around the holidays). Things I have observed/witnessed at this Macy's: -sales clerks running up incorrect items for customers -mislabled sale items -poorly laid out check out -NO working price check scanners ANYWHERE -miscommunication between departments -check out clerks who like to swap life stories with customers...which increases my wait time (I get impatient whilst shopping) -the shoe department...don't get me started. ...Actually, I will tell a little tale about the shoe department. Today, actually, I was looking for boots. I found two pairs to try on. I asked the first sales associate I could find (which took a while) to try them both on in brown, size 9. I took a seat and about 10 minutes later (I had almost decided to just leave) he emerged with two boxes, placed them in front of me on the floor, and disappeared again. The two boxes? Well, one pair of boots was black, not brown. The other? A completely different pair (I'm talking I wanted sleek brown leather and he came out with fur lined suede - what?!). Thus ends my Macy's saga. read more

The customer service at this place could use a little work, but I still have a better experience here than I do at Macy's Pentagon Row. I am not sure why cosmetic counter employees are ALWAYS snobby and pushy and unhelpful but I didn't have that experience at this Macy's. A lot of the times, I am sure that they have to deal with extremely difficult customers which tend to hold up the lines and yesterday I did in fact have that issue at the MAC counter- however, the employee was efficient and asked her to step aside and sort out her issue when her credit card was declined. This swift and resourceful thinking probably saved me 30 minutes of my life which I greatly appreciated. Also, there is a visitor center located near the elevators on the first floor. Ask them for coupons and local deals before you start your shopping. read more

As far as Macy's go, this is the worst customer service I have experienced. I have been to this location 5 times in the last two months (solely due to my daily route proximity), and I have yet to have a good experience. I will be metroing to the Macy's Pentagon City Mall from now on. On the most recent occasion, I wanted to exchange a Coach purse that was a gift for another style and went to that department. At least the sales person promptly cut off her social visit with another sales associate when I came up looking for help, but she looked pissed that she had to do so. Upon requesting help to see an item on a shelf, the woman made me feel as though I didn't belong there, and even told me the price of the bag (before bothering to take it down) as if I couldn't afford it. Really rude. She then acted like I was hugely inconveniencing her when proceeded to see if they had the item in the back. I decided I didn't want to get the gift I was to be excited for in such a bad mood place, so I did not exchange there and will be going to a different location. Unless it is a specialty item, like a Coach purse or something, I find it ridiculous that you cannot return or exchange an item outside of the department it came from. On another visit, I simply wanted to exchange a pair of gloves for a different size for my husband and was told I could not do that at the empty/available register outside of the men's section. I had to wait at the only attended register IN the men's section, that had a huge line and no-one bothering to open up other registers. At least the woman who WAS helping people was polite, but it still didn't change my thoughts about the experience on that visit. On most of the visits, I've seen multiple staff people hanging out behind one register not opening other registers, and only one of them is actually helping the line of shoppers. read more

Macy's most embarrassing location hasn't changed much in almost a year. The customer service has ticked-up ever so slightly, it seems the employees have now been upgraded to "rude and unhelpful" instead of "really rude and really unhelpful." There are bands of shoplifting hoodrat children things roving all around the store and causing assorted chaos and making a lot of noise. It makes you wonder if the Tyson's Galleria Macy's will follow suit after the Silver Line opens. Sadly, these types of walking trash make shopping a hassle for everyone else. There are OVERLY OBVIOUS loss prevention specialists also roving the store. If you're not observant, then you'd think that the store is full of strange creepers that like to stand next to you and play on their phone, switching between their home screen and SMS roll nonstop. Sheesh. I last reported on the men's underwear section. It has also been upgraded from "disaster zone" to "disaster recovery zone." It's still generally disorganized and messy, but some order has been restored (or installed, I'm not sure of how it was years ago.) The store is also in need of some remodeling and deep scrubbing in so many places. It's really embarrassing. Hell, just burn it down and start all over again somewhere north on Wisconsin Avenue. This location can be turned into some ugly parking lot for a few years or something. This Macy's has really just become a store to come to just to experience the antics of the local bored children that roach their way in as the crosswalk ticks down to 3 seconds. read more

Not my favorite Macy's store ever. The people working here didn't seem very competent. And the dress section was pretty scattered and somewhat confusing. The fitting rooms were pretty cluttered and it was obvious that the person who was supposed to be working there was away somewhere and not doing their job. I did buy a pretty graduation dress here. And I do like that this place is 5 stories and does a good job of utilizing the small space. And it is also conveniently located right next to the Metro Center metro station and is the only Macy's in DC, so I can't complain too much. read more

Wow, compared to the Macy's here in NJ this place rocks. People actually were happy to help me, and they were actually helpful! I walked in and asked one smiling associate where customer service was. She informed me, then asked if there was anything she could do. When I mentioned it was for a gift certificate, she took me to the nearest register and rang me right up, smiling and pleasant the whole time. At the men's cologne counter, the associate was well versed on what smelled like what and made relevant, intelligent recommendations. Up in the men's section, various associates helped me with everything from finding black a-frames in my size to finding jeans that fit just right. You guys here in DC are spoiled. Half the time in the Moorestown/Cherry Hill/Philly stores you can't find an associate, and when you do, they're usually insulted that you would dare to interrupt their (phone conversation/nap/chat about the club last night) and treat you like dirt. Here I felt welcomed and that these people were actually happy to help me. It was sadly an odd sensation to have in a Macy's. Keep it up though! At least I know one Macy's location that I truly enjoy shopping at!! read more

This review is for the Mac Cosmetics Counter... Anyways, after my horrible experience in Sephora (see previous review) on NYE, I headed over to Macy's just to see if they were open. The ladies at the Mac counter were extremely pleasant and professional. All I wanted was some help applying lashes and the young lady that helped me was so nice! I explained to her what happened while I was in Sephora and she even apologized for their unprofessionalism. She picked out the best lashes for me and even applied some cool liquid liner...I didn't even have to ask! I am so thankful for this young lady, she really helped make my New Years special and my lashes looked awesome! read more

I've only shopped at the jewelry department and the skincare/cosmetics department. For jewelry, I had my earrings picked out after 5 minutes, but it took me 10 minutes to find someone to check me out. Once I was at the cash register, the woman was nice and pleasant, and rang my things up quickly. Their selection is okay, Then I headed over to the Estee Lauder counter for some moisturizer. I was immediately asked if I needed any help by a very nice older woman; she helped me find my products even though I only had a vague description. When it came time to choose my colors on my free gift, she had me sample the colors and didn't push me to choose something specific. That transaction was much better than my previous one 10 minutes before. I've browsed the women's clothing, and it seemed like any other Macy's. Shoes and handbags seem well organized, but I didn't find what I was looking for. read more

For the convenience of this location, I really wished this Macy's had higher standards. First, the woman's shoe section is an absolute mess, and no help could ever be found. If you are lucky to find someone to help you, good luck trying to find your size. They seem to always be out of size 7 shoes the last few times I went there. Next, after my friend got her wallet stolen here, this place just left a sour taste. Apparently that same day, another man's wallet had also got pick-pocketed. This is a review for the men suits department. After being unsuccessful in matching the pants and coats in Springfield and Pentagon City Macy's, the store computer availability print out indicated that Macy's at G Street, in DC, has plenty of each suit variation. That proved correct when I saw about 200% more quantities and options at this location. But this is not about the size or quantity. This is about Assane, the "magic captain," as written on his tag. This young man has scanned me with the ability of the superior artificial intelligence and proved me, rather quickly, what is a correct style (and fabric) for me. He was pleasant, intelligent and professional. I wish I can have "Assane's" when I buy anything else in my life. I hope that one day he will graduate to "magic general/admiral" because in my mind he was already on the pedestal as far as the perfect salesman. I left Macy's with a perfect 3-piece 100% wool suit for under $300 after all the discounts. read more

I asked a sales Lady why did they remove it and they Said because of Theft. I used to shop in that Dept when it was Hecht's and never any theft then but oh well. This is a good Macy's, and super convenient to public transport with Metro Center just an elevator ride away. (Literally. You take an elevator to the Macy's basement. From stepping off the train onto the platform, to browsing in housewares, it's about 60 seconds.) I've had hit or miss service at other Macy's but here, Darwin in linens helped me and he was spot on. I had a good idea of what I was looking for, but wandered around lost/confused for about 5 minutes. That's when Darwin appeared, showed me all my choices, knew the prices or went and quickly found them (this was even more impressive considering the displays were lacking any information about pricing), offered me the discount of the day (that they so frequently have at Macy's), and was just all around pleasant to chat with. Efficient, knew his department, friendly. Then I went to a different level and browsed around for a bit. There I had the more typical Macy's experience with 2 salespeople chatting about their weekend plans while completely ignoring all customers. I did find a couple of things (without any salesperson ever approaching me) that I bought (after waiting a few minutes then politely interrupting the sales people and asking to be rung up). The prices were good after taking into account the 2 or 3 discounts (eg for a $59 item, I paid about 25.) It's good value for the money, so long as you time it right and buy when stuff is on sale. The gossiping salespeople - that's why this review isn't a 5. But for home linens, Darwin and crew were rocking it. read more

This location has horrible customer service with an attitude. Besides the fact it's a disaster, unorganized and very little inventory. The Bobbi Brown makeup counter was disgusting. The testers were filthy and some even had finger nail marks dug in them. Who knows there probably was snot smeared on some too, certainly looked that way. Was sad they didn't close this location along with the other 500 Macy's stores nationwide and develop this prime real estate, downtown DC with a store worthy of shopping at. On the one hand, they've got a decent selection and usually a good bargain to be had. On the other, I have yet to have a positive customer service experience here. Most recently, I ordered an item from macys.com that turned out to be the wrong size, so I went to this Macy's location hoping to figure out how I could exchange it for the correct one. Not only could the saleslady not even explain their exchange policy to me, she told me that the closest location with the correct size was in New Jersey. (Because I was totally set to cross 3 state lines in my nonexistent car to exchange it?) When I asked what my options were other than driving to New Jersey, she rolled her eyes, sighed, and said I should probably just mail it back and then buy the item in the correct size online, and then walked off. Avoid this location if you can help it; use macys.com, which I've found to be one of the better online retailers, and make darn sure you're ordering exactly what you want so you don't have to deal with their horrible customer service. If you know exactly what you're looking for, go in, buy it, and leave. Don't ask any questions because in my experience, they can't or won't help you. read more

So I went in on New Year's Eve to pick up a mattress set (they were running clearance deals and it was high time for me to replace my shoddy old twin with a nice comfy queen). The furniture department was empty of people when I arrived with some friends (also looking for a mattress) and it was only a few minutes before we were approached by two different sales people to check if we had any questions. So kudos for that. Jude, the sales person we dealt with, was very courteous and explained the differences in the mattress technologies very well and when we told him that we would be looking other places before making our decision he was very polite and gave us his business card. Now, trying to call him was an adventure in of itself, ten minutes after dialing, a conversation with a call center in India, a call center someplace in the US, and hearing a lot of bad 'on hold' music we finally contacted him. The total purchase that we were making was $794 before taxes. This apparently was not good enough to qualify us for the free delivery on purchases of $797 or higher. So under the threat of an additional $70 delivery fee he suggested that we look for something else to buy in the furniture department. Because the way the computer system works he was 'not sure' he would be able to do anything about the shipping. In fact when he did enter the information into the computer there was no problem at all waiving the delivery fee... something I am sure he was well aware of before we agreed to spend an extra $190 on a rug. Overall, I was thrilled with the price I paid for my new mattress, however feel a bit slighted by the sales person. In the end.... eh... its ok... I guess.... if thats what you are looking for. read more

Beware the furniture department! I spent a half hour learning about mattresses, and the sales associate seemed to be answering all of my questions but then right after he closed the sale, he suddenly remembered that he has the same mattress at home and it's so firm that after a couple of years it started to cause him hip and shoulder pain!! Well, you guessed it. The same thing started to happen to me after a few months of sleeping on this thing. It feels like my hip and shoulder are resting on concrete! (it's the Simmons Beautyrest Adrian Firm, now known as "Sunflower" firm, sans pillowtop) Problem is, even though new mattresses are designed to last 15 years, Macy's has an impersonal and rigid policy of giving you just 37 days to see whether the mattress works. And when I came back to explain my problems to the furniture department, they said they didn't care and told me to call customer service. I've never been treated this way on a department store floor. And the customer service people who do mattresses were snotty! All they said is that because the mattress isn't deformed, and it's been more than 37 days since I bought it, there's nothing they can do for me. Just a cold, bureaucratic response with no consideration whatsoever for what the Macy's sales associate didn't tell me. Oh, they did offer 10% off a new mattress if I trade this thing in, but what good does that do if I can't rely on the sales help at the downtown Macy's?? I'm better off going to some cheap mattress barn where the service is comparable to Macy's but the prices are better. Considering how much of an investment a bed is, Macy's really dumped on me. Also, what's up with the Pentagon City and Tenleytown stores not selling furniture at all? read more
