Being located in a prime location in Center City Philly, you would expect this Macys to be organized, have a great stock (atleast for clothes), and a professional staff. But it has none of these...It is one of the least organized stores with inadequate stock; and the staff is downright disrespectful and racist! Being a polite customer that gets no help because: a) You're a rude snot b) You walk away mid-helping a customer and put someone else on the task without filling them in so we have to start ALL OVER again. This review is for the fragrance section... and I want to preface by saying this isn't a knock on the people who work this department. Downtown Philly being what it is these days, Macy's is the last store of its kind and I suppose that in order to curtail loss prevention they have to do what they have to do. I stopped in because I was getting reacquainted with fragrance and wanted to see who has what in Philly... Philly proper. And if you know anything about fragrance, being able to smell before you buy is big a deal. But at this Macy's we can't have nice things because people swipe the testers. The tester is the display sample while a true personal sample is a small vial or bottle no bigger than ~9ml. For the very same reason that we don't have access to... sugar, ketchup, creamer, pens, hand soap, toilet paper, etc, (at other places in the area) we also don't have access to most fragrance samples at Macy's. I get it. I really do. I've been in suburban mall department stores where I probably could've walked out with a body armor made out of fragrance bottles because it was so dead. Not a sales rep to be found. But in this case, I wouldn't have raised an eyebrow. The displays are there... it's just that they're empty. Maybe remove the displays? I wasn't looking for anything in particular, but it was such a red flag. If you want to do a proper fragrance battle, I think it can be arranged... with the help of a sales rep. I, and I suppose many others prefer to do our own testing because we're not sure if the sales reps are on commission. I don't want to waste anyone's time as the nature of fragrance has stages. Don't buy based on the "opening" alone. Otherwise, it's Macy's... you'll find the crowd pleasing designer brands if you know your stuff (but nothing really high-end). PRO-TIP: I've heard that Macy's gets in some of that online overstock for the one-day sales... things they wouldn't have otherwise. read more

Got to see the beautiful building, some historic statues including a bronze eagle from the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis, and set my eyes on the massive organ. I'm docking a star off of my original review! Today I went into Macy's hoping to look at jewelry but this was the second time at the jewelry counter that I just kept waiting and waiting, being ignored. Finally a sales associate helped me but she was so rude, interrupting me and saying that the other customers were more important because they were shopping for wedding rings, well, I understand that's important but I was also hoping to get a nice piece of jewelry or at least have someone show me some items. After this rude attitude and no apologies for my wait and being understaffed from her behalf, I felt brushed off, I was insulted and complained, I didn't buy a single thing. A manager was most apologetic and I do appreciate that. I don't think I'll ever buy jewelry there after this rude sales associate, Mona. I have bought other things at Macy's which I really like, my family and I have made great purchases there. I do wish they had more 16s in the women's since I'm just out of full figure, the women's is smaller definitely and it would be nice if they had more 16s, plenty of 14s though. Well, the Philadelphia Lord and Taylor aka the Wanamaker department store is another one that's been bought by Macy's. And the guys from New York seemingly try hard to keep their customers: They run a slightly surreal Christmas light show in December and top it off with music from the huge Wanamaker Organ - truly a temple of commerce. The powers that be also moved the Charles Dickens: A Christmas Carol walk-through display from the defunct Strawbridge and Clothier department store into the Wanamaker building. Even more surreal: The walkthrough ends at Scrooge himself who shakes your hand, asks questions whether you have bad dreams, too, and points you towards an exit. There you meet the Ghost of Christmas and one of his rather sexy helpers for a photo op. Of course my sis and I were slightly too old for the Santa moment but the Ghost asked me whether I wanted to sit on his lap. Umm, no, thanks. It's big, it's beautiful, it's overpriced. Before buying anything, I recommend checking out Macys.com to see if it's the same price. I have found that you can get the same thing online just cheaper. Bought a pair of shoes and later found out they were $30+ cheaper elsewhere! Kind of feeling ripped off at this point. Most of the employees are nice and willing to help. It's a giant store but the selection feels tiny. The clothing seems to be geared more towards middle/older people. The shoe selection is nice but for a store that size, there should be more. I love this Macy's. If the architecture of the building isn't enough, meet me at the Eagle at noon to hear the pipe organ. The Wanamaker Grand Court Organ is the largest fully functioning pipe organ in the world! If listening to this instrument being played doesn't leave you just a bit awestruck, you really need to gain an appreciation of the arts. The store itself is huge. While I've only shopped shoes, bags and men's in my visits, selection was plentiful. The store was clean. The associates were helpful and friendly. I have no complaints at all about this particular store. I make it a point to stop in whenever I happen to be in town. I would love to see the holiday decorations and Christmas light show some day. read more

Where do I start... Background: I went in for a watch repair, a simple battery replacement and I have life time warranty on free battery replacement on it. Punch line: don't buy a watch here! A battery replacement which typically takes ~15minutes, takes ~3+weeks, I wonder what shape will my watch be in when I get it back?!?! Customer service in this place is a f%#% joke and people are so damn unhappy, I wonder if it's the shit lighting they work in or just everyone is so damn miserable. Detailed customer service story & review: well this is where all shit reviews and jokes start. Of course the representative in fine watches section that acknowledged my existence after ~10-15 mins of my looking directly at him, did not want to help (I think...). The funny part was he didn't understand how a life time warranty worked on my watch, I helped him review the contract (watch receipt) which states pretty much given the price Macy's covers all of the damages & battery replacement for life, plus I've been to Macy's for replacements before so I kind get the drill. I'll cut him some slack since he was new...Well moving on, they registered and took my watch in for repair. They did not give me a time frame for the battery replacement, but informed me that will call me when ready, they said it was expedited. It's been over a week and half and still I haven't received a call. Of course I can assume the battery replacement which takes ~15 minutes, is going through a surgery. I call the number on the receipt and of course after 3 dropped calls from reroutes (very complicated, I know...sad!), and no information/extension to the fine watches at this Macy's where I could call direct. I finally get ahold of someone who's actually a somewhat decent person to get me to the right department, who actually picked up the phone at the fine watches section, it's a f^*% nightmare! Of course the department told me it's going to take another week and half, "they will call you". Thanks Macy's Philadelphia for ruining a tradition many generations of Philadelphians who come downtown to see the light show with their children and grandchildren. You managed to take something magical and make sure kids and parents alike can't enjoy it. Parents and kids aren't allowed to sit throughout the show, they are yelled at by staff when they go outside the "red lines," moms with strollers have no where to go, lanes are crowded with merchandise, people with disabilities/elderly are not really accommodated, etc. Rather than have the show every 15 minutes to help alleviate heavy crowds, Macy's management crams people into one hour shows. Poor all around. Maybe you should take a lesson from nearby Comcast and learn from their family-friendly showing! read more

Bring your camera, not your wallet. This is a one-star Macy's inside a gorgeous building. Come for the sightseeing, but do your shopping elsewhere. I mean, as an engaged woman, you would think that if I spend 20-30 minutes feeling all the plates in the 3rd floor china section & poring over the fancy frames next to the registers, SOMEONE would come over and ask if I needed any help. And then, a couple of hours later, you would think that if I returned to the same section, dragging my fiance behind me, to show him the plates I liked the most, SOMEONE would acknowledge us and ask if we needed assistance. You would think. Sigh. At least the building is beautiful. I think the best view of the Wanamaker organ is from the 3rd floor balcony. You may have to weave through a couple bra displays to get to it, but the vantage point is well worth the discomfort. All of the rooms, actually, have gorgeous high ceilings with amazing structural details. It's a really beautiful building. Even that giant eagle on the first floor is a sight to behold. The staircases in the men's section are things of beauty. But at the end of the day, I left this Macy's with my phone full of pictures, and my bank account untouched. read more

***The best thing about this Downtown Philadelphia Macy's is the architecture; it has a great classical look; the selection is pretty good too, but the store (unfortunately) does feel a little out-of-date and drab for a Macy's; this Macy's just does not hold up that well compared to the great Downtown San Francisco Macy's in Union Square (that department store is bigger, much more contemporary, much more vibrant, and much more livelier); still, this Macy's is okay but just not great (it kind of reminds me of the Macy's in Downtown Los Angeles but with better architecture)*** I am not sure what the parking situation is at Macy's. I haven't been to a ton of Macy's, but the few that I have been to were a million times better than this place. The selection of clothes here is just okay, it's nothing impressive, at least not for the Men's department, there is a ton more stuff for women on multiple floors so that might actually be worthwhile. What is really terrible here though is the service. I've met one or two incredibly friendly sales people but the rest are just God-awful and some are fairly racist. I overheard one guy mention how the weekend sale was going to attract an "Asian invasion." He mentioned it to other sales people who didn't seem to care at all that he had just said that openly in the store. I stared in their direction for a while to see if they would notice that customers were clearly in ear shot but they were oblivious. Another time a woman from the shoe department who was being nice at first suddenly got pretty cross with me because I switched from getting help from her to getting help from another guy working in the same department. My friend was getting help from him and we were shopping together so big deal if I changed sales-people... ? She came over and took the time to mention how what I had done was wrong and that we're not supposed to do that. I'm real sorry lady, but at least I have manners. On another visit, a lady in the shoe area was just being plain lazy. There was a certain pair of shoes that I wanted which they didn't have. Now normally the sales people will call other Macy's nearby and ask if they have them in stock and offer to ask them to hold the shoes for you. The sale's person here however decided to just tell me to look up their phone number online and call them. Yes I can do it, but I'm standing in the store, you guys have a list of phone numbers right at the register, and oh yeah, it's kind of your job, so....? Right, my fault for expecting a little extra customer service. I have been here three or four times and bought next to nothing. After buying something online once and trying to return it here, it took them 40 minutes to process the return. The biggest draw of Macy's is the building, it's history and backstory, and the organ. When Macy's took over Wannamakers, I was worried, but they have maintained the holiday traditions. I met someone who works as one of the organ maintainers and he gave be a private tour. We slipped into an unmarked door on the Macy's sales floor and walked up the wooded catwalks. It was a thrilling adventure. I believe that there are tours, so go ahead and see the heart and soul of the building. And go ahead and shop there, too. I have shopped there countless times for gifts because the store is so close to my job. They always have sales and specials going. So often I go in wanting to spend $60 on a sweater or pair of pants and end up paying $25-$30. I wore a Macy's dress a party and a fashion savvy friend raved about it. I didn't mention it was off the rack and cost $80. Macy's also had HIV/AIDS causes as a priority in charitable giving. That means a lot to me, considering I work in the field. read more

I had to damn near BEG and PLEAD for insanely subpar service in order to spend a nice chunk of change on a watch. Why? Why? Why? This Macy's has a primo location in one of the grandest old department store buildings on earth, and yet.... 1. It is dirty. The men's department has probably not been vacuumed in a while, much less dusted or cleaned. I noticed the same throughout the store...piles of opened boxes, thick dust under displays, etc. 2. Service is terrible. Employees were texting, talking to each other, and doing everything but waiting on customers on both occasions I was in here. 3. The bathrooms are a homeless hangout. I wondered why one of the staff wouldn't look me in the eye when I asked where the bathrooms were. On a cold evening, I think I now know why. Clearly, this Macy's location is struggling to survive or is a cash cow one. I'm not sure. There are good deals here. The place is ideal for nearby hotel guests and conference attendees who need a pair of pants, a tie, or a new coat. The staff should find sales to be easy. I guess too easy. It is sad that such a grand place offers such a low class experience. I genuinely like shopping at Macy's, but can't understand why they can't get it right in such a magnificent space. read more

My boyfriend and I went here one morning because we didn't do laundry and he needed clothes for work :) The store had just opened and everyone was busy tidying up, ready for the Sunday crowd. The staff here were incredibly kind and helpful. I mean SO HELPFUL and friendly that I went to their website to leave feedback on how great the floor staff and security guards were. There is incentive for decent customer service. The saleswoman who rang me up told me her name and employee ID number and when I looked at my receipt, there was a link and code to leave feedback on the Internet, which I did. Aside from the service, they have great quality men's clothes. I love Van Heusen button up shirts, for only $20. Everything is nicely organized by brand. I love the Wanamaker building, so many memories of the holidays. I still go for the light show and Christmas Carol. One time, they even held adoptions here. Nice! read more

The are also single handedly increasing Nordstrom's profits, because everything at Macy's is awful and where else are you going to go? I hear it's an institution in NYC, but everywhere else, it is a close-out sale waiting to happen. 1. The quality of the clothing is not good. Macy's saved my hide when I realized I brought the wrong accessory (read socks) for my cosplay outfit at Comic-con. I was in a panic until I realized we had passed a Macy's on one of our walks. We got there before the doors opened and stood waiting with others until they opened the doors. Ran in, got the right socks, put them on right at the register to the amusement of the sales lady and out the door. It's a nice old building which has all sorts of twists and turns to get around in and of course the big eagle in the middle for "meeting" people at which we saw one young lady pacing impatiently around waiting for someone. If you are staying downtown and need something then this is a good place to go if you don't want to get into the traffic hell that is going to the King of Prussia mall. read more

There's nothing I love more than walking into a major department store and feeling like I am inconveniencing the customer service workers. I visited during my lunch break (which I often do) for a specific reason- to find a dress to wear for that weekend. While shopping through the department, a very rude worker walked up to me and informed me that I can only take 6 items into a dressing room at that time, and I should put some away. Seriously? This is how you want to make a sale? Instead of asking me if you can put some things aside for me, or offering to start a fitting room- you tell me to put things down. I've encountered a few quality workers there, but they are far and few between. The dressing rooms are disastrous and look like no one cleans up in them during the day and the shoe department is an unorganized mess. They are lucky they are the only department store in Philadelphia...its probably why they think they can get away with their poor customer service read more

NOTE: This review is entirely based upon the Holiday festivities. It has nothing to do with the layout of the store, or the helpfulness of the staff. I first went to the Dickens Village when I was a child. It's one of my fondest memories with my grandmother. I haven't gone in many years (since she passed), but was so grateful that I got the chance to go this year, and was happy to see that it was just how I remembered! On the third floor of this beautiful building, the magical secret of the Dickens Village opens for the public right after Thanksgiving. This free event throws you into the plot of Scrooge where old, mechanical dolls move and talk to put on a great show. The whole thing takes 10-15 minutes to move through if you take the time to read all of the story boards and to really take in the intricate details. I HIGHLY recommend checking this out, it's really magical for any age group. The Dickens Village is open almost all day, and you simply get in line to walk through. The second festivity this Macy's does is their light show! Thousands of lights take up a 3 story wall to put on a show narrated by Julie Andrews. You can either stand/sit on the main floor (in the designated areas, of course), or you can stand on the first or second floor, and watch from the balcony. All of the views are nice, and the sound is loud enough to hear from anywhere! The Lights Show goes off every 2 hours, on the hour, starting at 10:00 a.m.! read more

Gorgeous building (what a pedigree), amazing organ (world-renowned- wished they played it more often), lovely holiday retro light show - and you can't help but be reminded of that lovely Oscar nominated film, "Mannequin" when you are standing in that expansive atrium looking three floors up. In the last couple years, Macy's has made improvements, finally added a home goods, china, kitchen and wedding registry department, upped the ante with the 'look' of their store windows, and had a gorgeous, massive flower display during the annual flower show. Despite all those improvements, however, Macy's still ain't all that... You would think Macy's would fully take advantage of the fact that they are the only stand alone big department store in all of downtown Philadelphia -- and because they are bestowed with that honor, you would think that the inventory would complement a big city department store. You would think wrong. The selection for women at this store, including footwear (I'm afraid) is pretty lackluster, sometimes bordering on downright shitty and overpriced. The inventory, especially the women's apparel, appears to come straight out of a Midwestern Macy's store you'd find in Iowa or Missouri - not Center City, Philadelphia. Their employee force also needs some work. For the most part they are professional, but there is still a decent contingent that need beginner's lessons in manners and general decorum. I'm still holding out hope that this store, its inventory and their work force will soon catch up with the grandeur and elegance that is the Wanamaker building. read more

I have a place in my heart for this Macy's during Christmastime. I remember coming here to see the light show, the tree, and the organ when I was little, and it still delights me to this day. The old Wannamaker building is gorgeous and indicative of the historical charm Philadelphia exudes. But man, I hate that it's a Macy's. I walk in and god forbid it's the entrance by the perfume counters because it's like a stink bomb went off. I don't think I'm that sensitive to smells but whoooooa can we get some ventilation in here? Makes me dizzy. Salespeople are pushy, it's not very clean, and beyond being in a lovely location, there's nothing here that sets them apart from any other department store. This review is for Orlando upstairs in the mattress department. I just moved into a new apartment and was on the hunt for a queen pillow top plush, within budget, and without a sleazy salesman (woman) behind it. I looked everywhere. I went to Sleepy's in two different states (dreadful) and looked online at Raymour and Flannigan. Enter Orlando at Macys. I strolled in on a Monday and approached him behind the register. He was on the phone and on hold and he dropped what he was doing to assist me. A++ I told him straight up what I was looking for and that I wasn't interested in games or laying on 10 different mattress other then what I knew I liked. He said "what's your budget- we will make sure we don't go above that". Nail on the head. Bingo - you just sold me a mattress without even knowing it yet. I told him exactly what I needed and he made it happen. Scheduled my delivery for 4 days out (I got lucky) and gave me some pointers on delivery advice. He also helped me pick out a mattress cover, explained all of the warranties and didn't push when I respectfully declined. He made sure I was taken care of in other departments and even sent a follow up email three weeks post-delivery to make sure everything was satisfactory. Wow. Lots of love for Orlando. I am giving this Macy's 4 stars for one main reason. What other department store in the city of Philadelphia do we have to compare this to? NOTHING. If I had it my way, we would have a Nordstroms and a Niemans right around the block, but we don't. So comparatively to nothing this store is pretty good. The shoe department kind of sucks and lacks any styles that really stand out, but I have bought some really great clothes there and they carry some good brands (BCBG, Kenzie, French Connection). Someone mentioned the gaudy faux organ pipes and I'm going to have to go ahead and counter that and say I LOVE THE ORGAN PIPES. They are very much real and make very very beautiful noises. I often find myself cutting through here on my walk home to see if I can catch a time when they are being played. read more

A very Anti Christmas corporation. We went before Christmas and was looking to buy a Nativity set or ornaments or cards and they literally did not have a thing with Baby Jesus on it....... NOTHING! They had every other nonsensical image on an ornament but nothing CHRISTmas. The lady who worked there couldn't help us. DO NOT GIVE THIS PLACE YOUR BUSINESS!!! read more

The building is beautiful and the architecture classic - but quite frankly that is all there is to like about this former Lord's and Taylor. Impressive is the "world's largest" pipe organ and the Eagle statue, totally underwhelming is the clothing selection and lighting of the men's department. I must say it is quite odd that Philadelphia lacks downtown department stores when other major metropolitain areas makes them work - so for that fact alone I give Macy's some credit for being "the only game in town." Some credit - but not much.....the Macy's in Columbus Ohio has a better selection, staff, and lighting. read more
