One of the best free Christmas activities to do in the city. This year they are doing the light show every two hours. This the reason for four stars. They used to do it every hour. Macy's is never my favorite department store. Its selection isn't too good, and the store is often treated like a receptacle for flung-about garments. But on vacation in Philadelphia for a friend's wedding, my friend (not the one getting married) wanted a makeup touchup. To the makeup counter we went! We noticed designer brands, like Chanel and Clinique, as there often are at a department store. But we kept walking and found a pocket of the makeup section that resembled Sephora (I highly doubt whoever designed this area made such choices by accident). It had the same black-and-white color scheme with a virtually complete overlap in terms of brands sold. What separated it, though, was that it was a bit more laid-back. The two saleswomen were NOT pushy but certainly were passionate about their products. I did not get the makeover (not free, but with the purchase of products, and if you get it, there's a discount!). But I picked up a few items ;) The woman who gave my friend a makeover was personable and funny, and that's always nice when someone's sticking eyeliner into your waterline. The reason why I'm giving this five stars has nothing to do with the actual Macy's shopping part. This is purely an old building-lover, historical site, organ listening rating. The organ is located in the 7 story grand hall in the center of the Wanamaker Building. It has 45 foot pedals, 6 keyboards and over 28,000 pipes! It's so amazing and hard to explain adequately. President Taft actually dedication the Macy's store in 1911 and the organ was played. The organ was built for the 1904 St Louis Worlds Fair but then sat in storage until Wanamaker purchased it for his store. The history behind it is fascinating. If you are in Philly this must be on your list. You want to go over here to City Hall, so stopping in to hear one of the two shows of the organ. The building itself is absolutely gorgeous and the coolest Macy's you will probably ever see. As of March 2019 they are doing some renovations around the organ pipes so you can't see the big ones. However, the organ is still being played (two shows a day) and it is absolutely breathtaking. You can go up to the second floor and visit the organ booth, sign the book and get an up close view. My suggestion would be to go up the the third floor to get a view down on the player. read more

I'm giving this place 5 stars for the history and the upkeep of the beautiful building. And the fact that, when I entered, I was immediately whisked back to my fantasy dreams of childhood when Andrew McCarthey would swipe me off my feet and take me away on his motorcycle throughout the night, zooming all over Philadelphia through the dark. NO? WAIT... that was the movie Mannequin. #dreams. That was Kim Victoria Cattrall. :-) Anyways, this department store is pretty cool. ((It's actually too expensive for my tastes, and I usually feel like I'm being sized-up by the employees as I browse through the racks of Gucci and LV.)) Not to shop but just to stroll through and take it all in this Macys is perfectly gorgeous. The starbucks inside is pretty good as we got some drinks there, also nice bathrooms. Descent parking out front and conviniently located right downtown in walking distance to great and beautiful sights. We didn't do any shopping here, its just your average Macys merchandise and it was pretty full, but the building is quite a sight to see. read more

Absolutely sad how far downhill this once treasured landmark has gone. I went with my grandchildren to the Christmas lightshow, which was shockingly, sparsely attended, then was accosted by a young security for leaning against a column, (I'm 67, arthritic and just over cancer surgery) He either hates his job, or hated me..We then went to an empty Dickens Village, another underwhelming experience...the "staff" were miserable, unhelpful, and downright hostile. Obviously, the entire store hates their jobs...oh BTW, there were 2 shoplifters apprehended and one who got away, in the 45 minutes we were in this hellhole. I'm sorry but I cant rave enough about my experience with the staff!! I was looking for a gift for my dad and the staff was incredibly helpful. There are plenty of gift boxes with free gifts included but on top of that they included a travel size cologne of my choice! Such a sweet addition! The staff in the shoe department is especially helpful and I've purchased several shoes here and just love the way they go above and beyond to suggest find your size and even help you find coupons if there are any available! It can get a little messy in the shoe department but what girl doesnt love a shoe explosion lol. The dress selection is gorgeous too and I love just trying on dresses and feeling like a princess. I could go on and on but I just want to point out the architecture of the building is what gives this Macys its charm. The old Wanamaker building can still be appreciated and admired and it definitely should be. The view from the third floor into the atrium is beautiful in general - but during the wonderful events that are put on every year - it's next level! From the flower show to the Christmas light show, playing the Eagles fight song on the organ - this store definitely brings a wonderful spirit and Philadelphia pride that I can definitely keep loving! I have to say, really the only reason I ever come to this Macy's is at Christmas for the light show. It's a Philly tradition. If you've never been, you need to go!!! Whenever I do come it's super crowded, they've put SO many stalls on the ground floor area that everyone is packed in like sardines. Trying to see the show. An adorable little village located on the third floor of Macy's Center City in the old Wanamaker Building as many of you know. It's a permanent fixture here in Philly and is also a family tradition for many. A visit here is FREE and works perfectly when combined with Macy's iconic light show viewing. Make sure to leave appropriate time for both and of course for some impromptu shopping! You'll first walk through a room of gorgeous holiday decor, giant nutcrackers and some nutcrackers and ornaments for purchase. We actually added one from here this year to our every growing, beloved collection! The village is modeled after London in the 1900's and done so well! The journey begins with Charles Dickens reciting the first passage from his iconic "A Christmas Carol". You then walk through Christmas Past, Future and Present, but of course. The details are super sweet and get you feeling nostalgic and certainly leaving in the holiday spirit. At the end of the village you will have the option to visit Santa or just walk through. Staff is on hand to take professional photos free with an option to purchase or you may take your own. They cannot however, take photos with your camera or phone so come prepared. At the exit you will enter an area for Build A Bear Workshop complete with fashionable and seasonal outfits. This year there was even the oh so popular Troll accessories available. The staff, clad in appropriate period garb were all so kind. They kept the line moving and chatted with all of the kiddos, even handing them all a Santa keepsake pin with the year on it. I say it's an absolute must! Really wee ones may get scared of Jacob Marley shaking at his grave or at the ghost of Christmas Past hanging above. They may also throw a fit for you to purchase something. Come with these things in mind and you'll be fine. Stroller space is also a tad limited. Consider leaving it at the exit as you would for an amusement ride. My husband and I both really loved it! The kiddos of course, loved Santa! And hey, it's FREE! Why not?! read more

No question about it, Macy's is the best for great sales on quality merchandise! Whether it's outerwear, jewelry, shoes/boots, intimate apparel, etc. you can't go wrong at Macy's. You are sure to find what you need at a reasonable price. This location also has a holiday light show with acommpanying organ music which is always enjoyable. I can't get enough of it, I come pretty much every year, lol. Macy's is also my favorite place for perfume! They have every high end brand displayed in all its glory on the main floor of the store. And the sales people are not only kind but complimentary. I find that because Macy's makes such a great impression on me and I save so much money there, I don't mind going there when there is no sale. I gladly pay full price at times because I know my items will fit well, look great and last long. read more

I had a pretty good experience shopping for clothing. The fitting rooms could be cleaned and updated, but employees did a good job of making sure clothing was pulled out and back on the floor. My biggest complaint of the store is the shoe department. I'm not the only review here complaining about the shoe department! I tried my best to not show my annoyance but come on Macy's! FIX THE STAFFING IN THE SHOE DEPARTMENT. Your employees obviously need more help in that department. Employees were friendly and did their best with the demanding crowd, but it took 15 minutes to get the shoe I wanted to try on only to have it be in the wrong color! I waited another 15 minutes again for the right color just to be told they didn't have it in my size. read more

Okay I have never really been a fan of Macy's service, but I'm really impressed with this one as the only one located in center city. Worked with two people in the bed department and Scotty and Orlando were both great to work with and super nice. Very knowledgeable and wanted the best for us - not just commission. Even when we bought pillows in another department, it was reg seamless and easy and they spent time to look for the last available pillow design in stock. Going over sale weekends are always the best- 40% off items? Best sale prices? Check. We've also found great show deals (last pair of cole haans for $40!) steal!! Impressed. read more

My family has a fun tradition of going to this Macy's for the organ and Christmas light show and the Dickens Village on the 3rd floor. My parents are Philly natives and both grew up doing this and now we drive up from Baltimore to do this as a family. So much fun and very well done. When I heard that Macy's was coming to Philly and moving into the old Wanamaker Building my mind was filled with anticipation, and not just because I have family who work in the one in Ardmore that score me a discount. I've picked up some pretty serious buys such as an Emeril iron skillet, wine glasses, snazzy pants, and a classy suit at other Macy's. So I was anticipating the same. But what Philly ended up with was less than half of that equation. When I walked in on the first occasion I instantly noticed the lack of housewares and linens, and they're usually the best spots in the other Macy's. And as I walked around their clothing aisles I noticed how half arsed the selection was compared to the stores other spots. at first I knocked it up to new location jitters, but the store is still lacking after all these months. FINALLY, I saw them start to do more rennovating a couple months back, and I was anticipating a killer housewares section, considering how much sense it would have made. What did Macy's do instead? Open up a Starbucks. Yeah, another Fourbucks is EXACTLY what Philadelphia needs ~sarcasm~. It looks like their finally getting ready to open a housewares department in a couple months. So maybe it will finally start to turn this sorry excuse for a department store around. But outlook = doubtful. read more

This Macys is such a great location but sadly their customer service is severely lacking. I placed an order for pick up and it wasn't ready. Multiple employees could not help me. One employee even refused to let me return an item with a receipt at her counter...because she didn't want to. I had to ask a manager and he made her return the item. What a sad end to the lovely building that housed Wanamker's Department Store. If you look past the piles of unfolded shirts and racks of discount clothing, you can see the remnants of the Gilded Age. Walk into the main hall and see the world's largest pipe organ. Notice the inlaid tile within the entranceways proudly displaying the JW initials. Then feel sorry for the look and feel of a cheap discount store inside. I would give this place zero star if I could. Two days ago, on my birthday, I went here trying to get a dress for myself, and after I took my shoes off, I step on a big nail on the fitting room floor. This is NOT a instructions area, it is not supposed to have a nail on the floor! I went out to look for people who work there, the black lady on the second floor women department gave me the MOST shitty attitude I have ever seen. Then she called the security guy, who throw the nail to the trash can and told me it is trash I can't take it. For Two days they didn't even call me to check how I am doing. They had a nice selection of men's clothing and it was fairly easy to find everything you needed. This masterpiece of a building and its imposing store has gone from the exclusive, under Wannamakers, to upscale, under Lord & Taylor, to trendy Proletarian under Macys. Still, the impressive architectural interior is there though the offerings and the service have gone downhill. I went there to purchase driving gloves as all I have left are bulky ski gloves. I remember clearly the Lord & Taylor times when an attendant would wait on you and ensure you got what you wanted. I ambled around looking for men's gloves until I had to ask one of the few attendants around. She asked why I hadn't looked at the glove rack. My reply... M'am, if I knew where the rack was I wouldn't be asking you, now would I.... So she took me there and left me alone. I came back and asked if she would assist me with purchasing a pair of small gloves. Her reply... If we don't have them, they're sold out... I'd expect better from a K-Mart... read more

Some may find the organ's music distracting, a tad overbearing but I think the Macy's 'suits' were unto something when they positioned jewelry and shoe department smack center of the organ's reach. As I walked in, I could almost hear the herald angels sing "buyyyyyyy".....makes for some atypical shopping expedition. I agree with others and its frustrating trying to find the escalators.The building feels like an old Opera house and walking about top floors is cumbersome. I went once around the second floor which felt like a 1/4 mile walk trying to find the 'down' escalator. Unless you know the store, don't expect this to be a quick, shopping outing. The best thing about this Macy's is that it is in the historic Wannamaker Building. The architecture is beautiful. The Christmas light show is a holiday tradition that all kids in Philly should see at least once. The Christmas windows are a smaller version of what you would see at Macys in NYC. The Eagle in the Center Court is an iconic statue, where I would wait for my mom to finish shopping back when the store was called Wannamakers. The store also features the largest fully functional pipe organ in the world. The organ is played every day and there are periodic organ concerts. You can even go on an organ tour if you are intested in that kind of thing. You will be shocked at how much space is used to house the pipes. No store would be built today with so much space dedicated to an instrument. Now, the actually sales floor of Macys is not up to par with the building. At least the men's section isn't. The merchandise is overpriced for the quality, unless you are shopping on Black Friday. The mens section features Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, Izod, Calvin Klein, Nautica, and more. But you aren't getting the best merchandise for those brands, with prices higher than a Century 21, for example. Most of the merchandise can be found cheaper at an Outlet store. Don't expect to find the more exclusive brands like Ralph Lauren purple label in Macy's Ralph Lauren section. On the plus side, this Macy's has by far the largest selection of goods of any store in Center City Philadelphia. You can find almost anything you need there if you are in Center City looking to shop. The best time to visit this Macy's is over the holidays, when you might find a deal and can check out the windows and light show. Make sure to take note of the architecture. Sure ... it's hokey and my kids have no idea who Julie Andrews is, but the Wannamaker's (er... I mean Macy's) Christmas Light Show is a Philadelphia holiday tradition for as long as I can remember. It is so ingrained in our family that my three teenage boys don't even argue when I say its time to go to Macy's for the light show - they know it's gonna happen anyway and they have a lot better shot at a yummy lunch at the Reading Terminal Market or some other adventure in the city if they just grin and bear it. In fact, this year, my 15 year old even asked when we were going. Make this a holiday tradition for your family, too. I may not shop at the Center City Macy's location, but I can assure you that Macy's gets more of my suburban department store business because they have chosen to continue to finance this extravaganza from yesteryear. read more

I think this is one of the nicest Macys in the United States. It has its own building in the middle of Philly near the town center hall. When you go in, it feels like a normal Macy's but the ceilings are high and you can see roman architecture everywhere. Clothing options are nice of course especially the Winter coats section where my boyfriend and I got some nice coats on discount and a further discount when we went on a tour of Macy's with the visitor's desk. The center of Macy's where they sell the perfume is a pretty awesome site. Look up and you feel like you're in the galleries of Fayette in Paris with the stained glass domed ceiling and the sides with giant organs running up and down the 3-4 story building. Pretty awesome site to see and even more festive if you go near Christmas and see all the decorations giving the golden organ even more life and color. The tour is pretty inclusive and you get every statue and the history of this Macy's explained to you thoroughly and I thought it made the shopping experience all the more awesome because we understood Philly a bit more and it made our purchases even more special. read more

This is truly the most gorgeous department store and a must-visit on a trip to Philly for the history and grandeur! Unfortunately they're doing some renovations and everything I touched on the ground floor had a layer of white chalky dust on it - the pricey designer bags and accessories and all. I understand it must be hard to conduct maintenance and keep a store running, but maybe you need extra staff to keep the store and its wares clean during this time. I wasn't inclined to buy because items were dirty and already seemed used. Eh. This review is in regards to their Santaland they have every year on the 3rd floor. We were really looking forward to this and were not impressed to say the least. Before you see Santa you walk through "Dickens Village" A creepy animatronic paradise of scary figures that move ever so slightly, enough to send a 4 year old into your arms demanding to be carried because they are just generally creepy. Oh, and there are scary 'spirits' in one scene flying up above which my 5 year old was scared of as well. At the end of this Christmas haunted house, you have the opportunity to sit with Santa. My younger son refused to sit with him (which is standard for him) but my older son did. Santa was nice. No real beard. Call me particular, but I prefer a real bearded Santa, but regardless, he was nice. They took his pic and gave us a card and led us to the area to see the photo and buy them. We were the only ones at this entire thing and the ladies behind the photo counter didn't even greet us or ask if we wanted to see our pic. We left swiftly. And of course they pack the place with toys to further try and keep your kid complaining and begging for stuff on your way out. Maybe they put toys there because some people have to buy them for their kids to cheer them up after that scary Dickens Village... Just a thought. If you've never needed emergency stuff--think shower curtain, towels, a blanket--good on you. If you have, though, you could do worse than this Macy's. They got me in and out for a pittance, thanks to the sales associates scouring for sales given that I really could not care less about what color my shower curtain was. This Macy's has some issues--it's older, it's somewhat dirty, and the sales associates can quickly be either catatonic or helpful depending upon the hour--but for a quick sale they're fine. read more
