Went in there for the last round of shopping and couldn't find anything I would buy, it's either more expensive than the competitors or extremely bad designs. The decaying remains of what was once an iconic grand dame of a building - soaring ceilings, cast iron lanterns, art deco touches. And now you walk in and it looks like a TJ Maxx except the majority of price tags are 4x the price. I can't fault the downfall of Macy's here. Shopping habits of the general public has changed. Needed some casual clothes as well as a simple suit that I was planning on tailoring to fit me best. The store is messy and feels more like a thrift shop, the selection is limited for how big both the location and Macy's as a company is, and the prices were either reasonable or a ripoff. $300 for a suit from Macy's is like getting a good deal for a used mattress. Just don't do it. The place has certainly gone down hill, but if you're in the area and like to shop, im sure you could find something that might suit your fancy. Let me preface this by stating that this review is just for the Wanamaker organ. Macy's is housed in the Wanamaker building, which is a designated historical building. The Wanamaker organ is the largest fully functioning pipe organ in the world. It plays daily at noon from Monday through Saturday. The music playing from this organ was very soothing and holiday like. I saw one lady closed her eyes while listening to the music play. The pipe organ played for almost an hour. It was great to have a free concert right inside of Macy's. If you want to see it from the first level, just come to the women's shoe section. There's also a grand eagle statue on the first floor as well. You can also see the organ pretty well on the second and third floors. Plus, you can see the person playing the Wanamaker organ from the upper levels. If you want to do some shopping at Macy's and enjoy a lovely concert, come here at noon to get your fix. read more

I'm done with Macy's. Really. It's a shell of its old self. On Sunday, June 2, mid-afternoon, I stopped by this location to purchase something at the Clinique counter. There were not a lot of customers, and even fewer employees. I waited at the counter for about 10 minutes. No one came to help me, no one acknowledged I was there and, to add insult to injury, there was a Macy's employee at the very next "booth" who, the entire time I was waiting, looked like she was napping with her head down on the counter. After 10 minutes I left in disgust. With all the security cameras they have, I'm sure Macy's can verify everything I am writing. But that was the last straw. I am no longer a Macy's customer. But, I'll be back for their "Going out of business" sale! read more

This is a beautiful department store but sadly, has very few people shopping. This is a "must visit" location for visitors of Philadelphia to see the beautiful architecture, the organ, and the Eagle. I want to thank the makeup people at MAC especially Kelly, who helped make me feel beautiful. She helped me buy products that matched my skin tone. She is a true artist and if I had a business, I would hire her as a makeup artist in a second. I will definitely be back to this Macy's the next time I'm in Phili. read more

Truth be told, I'm not a fan of Macy's at all, and rarely ever shop at any Macy's, except occasionally for cosmetics. However, this one location is the exception. I really liked this store solely because of the super cool architecture in this store. Just step inside, and you'll know what I mean. This is no typical California mall-like store. This was the original Wanamakers Department Store, one of the first department stores in the U.S. It's now an historical landmark, and when you're inside the Grand Court, look up really really high, and you'll see the world's largest functioning pipe organ! I believe they still use it from time to time. See, I told you this is no ordinary Macy's!! I've never been to a department store in the U.S. quite like this. Hubby took me here and said women, including his aunt, used to make special trips into Philadelphia years and years ago from New Jersey just to shop at Wanamakers. This is definitely one of the best MACYS that I've ever been to. It is incredibly spacious ! The store was in phenomenal condition. It didn't feel cluttered. In fact it was an incredibly busy weekend, the Meek Mill concert in addition to the additional 30% off sale. The customer service was extraordinary. In addition to the cleanliness the architecture of the building is breathtaking. Located inside of the grand hall of the Wanamaker building. Shoutout to our local community heroes! Macy's was a gorgeous historic building with a working cathedral like pipe organ! The staff is friendly and personable! "Zac or Zax" in shoes was so attentive and patient. We love the Nikes we bought! The cashier in the front store and the cashier in women's clothing sections were informative and friendly as well! That is how we discovered that the organ still plays ! The store is huge and maybe because of Covid the staff is kinda sparse. But a great thing is that there's an awesome Security Officer standing in the restroom area who is attentive, friendly, and helpful! Lots of awesome clearance racks as well!!! ** Review for the Macy's Christmas Light Show ** A one and done kind of experience! I was told that this show was a definite must see and me still being new to Philly.. I of course knew I needed to experience this! And who knows how long Macy's will be around for with a lot of the stores closing. But it was just meh.... but at least it's FREE! Location Once you get inside Macy's.. the light show is located on the main level where the shoes are! The best view was from the 2nd level so you're not looking up the whole time and just have to look straight. On the 3rd floor, they have reserved seating for handicap if needed and some more viewing areas as well. Otherwise, you can view it from the main level where the shoes are, you'll just be looking up the whole time. Showtimes Shows ran every 2 hours which I saw in the past they used to run more frequently together. The show was about 12 minutes long. Check the schedule online, we came to view the lights at 8pm on a Saturday night. With this schedule, it makes it more packed and more hectic and I feel less enjoyable. I suggest coming during the middle of the week during the less busy hours to avoid the crowds. We came about an hour before the showtime and was able to get a good spot on the 2nd level right in front where nobody was blocking our views. But then the crowds came and they crowded around you elbow to elbow. With all the winter layers, man was it hot watching the show lol! Show The show itself was cute but I wasn't WOWED! The sound wasn't great... but when the organs at the end played, the sound was definitely better. It was a story and maybe the younger kids would enjoy it... but maybe my expectations were too high. Great to see if you're from out of town and just trying to experience all the holiday Philly things to see... but not one to come out of your way to see! Happy Holidays! read more

5 stars for Macy's efforts to maintain some holiday cheer in this difficult time for everyone. 5 stars for the ease of online returns with the Customer Service reps, they are quick, efficient, have plexiglass up, wear masks, and have signage for social distancing (although I wish they had a bigger space for people to further distance). 5 stars for keeping up the beautiful displays of the Macy's Xmas Lights Show - although I feel conflicted with the fact that current guidelines would recommend people stay in their homes if possible and to limit in person encounters, I appreciate them making the effort to light up our spirits. I also love the window displays and festivities on the exterior of the building. It's definitely been a difficult year for all businesses, but I am glad that this historic building can keep up their business, their beautiful upkeep of the large organ and Holiday traditions. Macy's Center City is in a nice location for transportation and tourist. Inside you will find the majesty of the the structures homage to a time long past. This beautiful historic building is the home of the internationally known Crystal Tea Room. This space as I understand is still available for rental hosting special events. This store offers moderately priced apparel and housewares. Often you will find major sales with plenty of merchandise for you to choose from. This store has a very large women's shoe department, hand bags and men's wear. The downside to this store is they do not sell high end items/designers as the Macy's store in Manhattan does, it's is long past time to change this. Years ago when it was John Wanamaker they sold the likes of Gucci etc. The most important, spectacular and enjoyable features of this store is the large bronze eagle located on the first floor 'center square', the sound of the historical organ (see the Macy's website for the schedule) and the nutcracker performance during the winter. All these are must see items or events when you visit, they are international drawing cards. There is nothing like Macy's Center City in the winter! read more

This is one of the best Macy's I've been to for every reason. The architecture is amazing to look at and it's huge which means it has everything you need. I went to the women's department and it has a vast selection of all the designers -Nike, Adidas, etc and things you won't find in most stores. The customer service was on point with the salespeople being very helpful and it was organized. I was definitely impressed being a cardholder as I like to frequent different stores in my travels. Glad I decided to stop in this location as most look as if they're on their last legs. You will not be disappointed. This is a historic, iconic Macy's. I interned at the Wanamaker building one summer, and this was my lunchtime hangout. The best place to find a gift, or a nice outfit, in center city. shoe department is insane. every brand and/or style that you could think of. cosmetics department is also vast and plentiful. diverse selection of brands (MAC, Estee Lauder, etc.) Starbucks coffee in house. sales associates are all really helpful. spacious bathroom area on the third floor. they also occasionally have a grand piano player in house. nice touch to the shopping experience. definitely check it out, if you're in Philly. read more

I only expected to walk into your normal Macy's but was pleasantly surprised when I walked in. I had an OMG moment - this was where "Mannequin" was filmed! No longer "Prince and Company, aka Wanamaker Building", I loved and appreciated the history and architecture of this property. Everyday at 7pm, the Grand Court Organ concert is performed and from what I have learned it is the largest organ in the world. Aside from the Macy's in NY, this has to be the best Macy's I have ever been too, its gorgeous! If you are from out of town, you get 10% off your purchase, just show your ID. Added plus - no sales tax! No sales tax on clothing and shoes when shopping in Philly period. :) read more

Four stars was maybe too generous for this Macy's. Still love the light show and stopping by during the holidays for the displays, but for my general shopping needs, I really prefer the Cherry Hill location. I've found repeatedly now that the staff here is generally apathetic and unhelpful. One time I was in a lot of pain last month -- could hardly walk -- but after standing at a register for a bit in line behind someone else, the lady told us she was closing her register and to find another one on the floor. Then, today, my mom was looking for a new pair of sneakers, showed the girl a shoe she wanted to try on, and was told she'd be helped after another customer paid at the register. Fine -- makes sense -- at least until the cashier proceeded to have a 15-minute long conversation with the customer and then move on to the person waiting behind her. My mom got up and started walking away, so I walked up to the register and asked, "You really couldn't help my mom?" and she replied saying she would have helped her after the second girl. I reminded her that my mom had been waiting much longer and let her know that she lost a good sale. She didn't even apologize, and I'm sure it didn't phase her one bit. I realize customer service jobs can be less than ideal -- I've worked in CS at several places. But you really need to learn how to multitask and acknowledge customers in a proper order/timely fashion to retain your sales. Even as a big box store. Seriously aggravating, and I hope Macy's corporate considers providing additional sensitivity training to their employees. read more

I have a bit of difficulty writing about this location. You see, this was John Wanamaker's until late 1995. Macy's didn't have a store within Philadelphia itself. Oh, there were plenty of suburban stores, but Philadelphia belonged to Wanamaker's and Strawbridge & Clothier (and even their budget store chain Clover) and Macy's didn't make a move into the city. The family-owned department stores fell in 1995 and 1996 and were sold to May Department Stores. It seemed a brutal blow to Philadelphia and to Center City. May Department Stores took the opportunity to put Lord & Taylor into this Wanamaker location, but they stripped the store of its grace somehow. This past June, I finally talked myself into entering the store and was surprised to see that it wasn't bad. It could use some organization, but all Macy's stores could use more of that. The staff was friendly and seemed genuinely happy to be there. It was good to see the eagle there, as well as the pipe organ. The store looked more clean than I remember. It always seemed a bit yellow but no longer. I like Macy's for what they are--a large chain with a consistent inventory across stores, across the country. This location no longer feels like Wanamaker's but thankfully, it doesn't feel like the sad Lord & Taylor it briefly was. Center City needs to recover, as The Gallery certainly doesn't help. read more

I absolutely love this Macy's. I am not typically a department store shopper but the secret gardens throughout the store made this place both beautiful and fragrant. I liked the flowers so much that I took pictures. They were on every floor. I found myself scouring through all three floors to see the flowers. Needless to say, I ended up making purchases on each floor. I even intentionally left my coupon at the register on the second floor, only to be told the person on the next floor have one I could use. I left with deals and a need for some items to be shipped. ...... Glad I live far away from the location. It will save me money and leave some stuff for you to buy. read more
