I used to shop at this Macy's quite often however it's not what it used to be. They have the same products and same premise but the staff here is unknowable and rude. They also are very very strict about returns even if you are in the window to return it. They also have random return policies with all sorts of time frames which is super confusing. Overall I would shop someplace else. read more

I remember feeling affronted when Dayton's became Marshall Fields. I was like, what? What? WHAT?!? Chicago company thinks they're better than us? Unbelievable! Boo! In hindsight, that indignation was all sort of silly because it all went down the year I graduated from college and could barely afford to support a Wal-Mart lifestyle let alone darken the door of a department store like Dayton's (or Marshall Fields). So when Macy's took over Marshall Fields, the bitch in me sort of laughed at everybody from Chicago who was so upset about it. I was working in downtown Chicago at the time it happened and I can't even begin to explain how many times I was approached in the women's restroom at work by some angry coworker who "couldn't believe" that Marshall Fields wasn't going to be around anymore and wanted to vent. The Minnesota Nice pumping through my veins forced me into a polite agreement of whatever it was they were telling me. But as soon as their backs were turned and/or another Chicago transplant was in the vicinity, I was like, "A-ha!!! HAHAHA! Payback, suckers! Oh. I mean, I'm sorry. I really am. And I agree that State Street is never going to be the same. I really do. But still...get over it. I did." And the sun has continued to rise and set on Macy's for a considerable length of time with nothing notable occurring. Until this past Monday when I came to the following conclusion: Macy's is a succubus of sucking. Macy's is a creepy black hole of suckiness and is made entirely of FAIL. I stayed at home to finish writing thank-you notes to people who had attended my bridal shower while my fiance went out with the following directive: Find coffeepot. Buy coffeepot. After shopping around for a good while, comparing prices and models, he eventually ended up at Macy's and was surprised to see that the winning coffeepot model was considerably cheaper at Macy's than anywhere else, so he bought it. As soon as it was at home and out of the box, we both realized that something was wrong. Something was horribly, disgustingly and repulsively wrong. This brand new coffeepot was USED. And it was FILTHY. There were dried coffee stains on the lid. It was covered in dust and water spots. And the grooves in the dials on the front of the machine were coated with what looked like 1) cake batter, 2) earwax or 3) the standard dirty kitchen grime that can collect on an appliance that has spent months in a kitchen that belongs to someone who probably cuts raw chicken on their countertops and doesn't disinfect when they're done. Obviously we returned it. The employees we worked with were extremely apologetic and genuinely so, which is uncommonly rare. One of them actually said, "I'm so sorry. I don't even work in the kitchen department and I feel ashamed. That's disgusting." So wow. You go, Macy's employee! Five stars to the hiring manager at Macy's Maplewood because those employees were stellar. Zero stars to Macy's as an entity. And one star because Yelp won't let me leave that part blank. read more

I called Macy's to request for a new card the lady said yes I will mail one out to you. 2 weeks later still have not received it I called back to let them know I haven't received it. She put me on hold,comes back too tell me my account is closed! After an hour and 10 minutes talking to three people to tell me they closed your account. if you don't use your card after so many months they automatically close it! One lady said don't you check your credit score it says it on there? I told her I have no reason to check it. Very very disappointing in all this BS. Macy's has always been my favorite store to shop. This is for the mens department at the Maplewood location. We where looking for black work pants. The selection is Dockers and some other company. Pretty poor. While my husband was trying on some pants, I got a chance to look arround. The floor is dirty, the carpet is filthy, parts of the carpet is ripped, if you don' t pay attention, you can easly trip and fall. There are small needles on the floor all over in the dressingroom. Customers must pull them out of the packed shirts and just through them on the floor. If you try pants on, and walk arround on socks, you can injure yourself. I have not been to any other department in this location. I think I'll stay away until they fix the place up. read more

I was recently in the market for a new tie to match a shirt for my hubbs. The employee working in the suit and tie area came up to me to see if I needed any help and in the same breath added that she did not help pick out ties or give her opinion...the question in my mind was so what can you help me with besides taking my money? Under the Dayton's and Marshall Field name, the menswear employees were always so helping in offering suggestions for coordinating ties and shirts. They would provide a few options and let me make the final decision. I will think twice before spending my money at Macy's anymore. read more

Hello, I would like to express how unsatisfied I was with my shopping experience yesterday at your Maplewood Mall location. I visited the women's shoe department on Thursday evening 12/12/13 at about 6:30pm. I was shopping with two friends who were both looking for black dress boots to wear at a family member's funeral. The three of us were very unhappy with the woman who was helping us in that department. It was very difficult to find someone available to help us when we arrived. When helping my first friend, the woman told her she needed to "move her fat over" in order to zip up her boot. She seemed quite pushy and continuously told my friend to "just buy the brown ones" since the black version were not in stock. Well, brown boots are not what my friend was looking for, and black would be more appropriate for a funeral. This was frustrating to us since we were shopping for boots to match a specific dress, not to mention outrageous that she would comment on my friend's "fat" leg. When assisting my second friend, the saleswoman said "You are wearing the wrong kind of jeans for those boots; you need to buy [Macy's brand] over there." The saleswoman was probably just trying to make a recommendation on what would be more flattering with these boots, however, her demeanor came off as very rude rather than helpful. We were all very turned off by our experience with this saleswoman. It seemed very odd. One of my friends eventually did find a boot to fit her in her size, and she quickly paid for it and left. We all wanted to leave quickly after feeling like we were not being helped by someone who was not only incredibly rude, but also seemed to care only about making a sale, whether it was the boots we wanted or not. Macy's women's shoe department had a fabulous selection, but unfortunately the experience we had with that saleswoman makes me want to shop elsewhere in the future. read more

So to be honest this place has gone downhill. Macy's used to be an upscale department store. Like just under Nordstrom's. Now this place looks like Marshall's. And that's fine if that's what you're into. However, I expect more from the Macy's name. The store is dirty, there's ish every where. Not gonna lie though, I still come here like once a week. While this is far from one of my favorite Macy's, It's certainly not the worst. I am a Macy's addict and use their card more than any other card I own (20% off clearance and sale, I'll take it!) My last shopping experience here was in the home department and I had one of THE most helpful associates (it's nice when your lugging around a comforter set and an associate takes it off your hands so you can buy more goodies...) I mentioned I didn't know a 2-day sale had been on so she offered to put me in the system for whenever a sale is on (ya know--just what I need...) Best part was because of the 20% with Macy's charge & additional 30% off home clearance I paid a whopping 95 bucks for $350 worth of merchandise. read more

Ralph, who was working upstairs in lingerie/housewares/swimwear is NOT an asset to your store. His first words to me, no greeting at all, when I said I needed to return a couple items, were, "Am I aware there is a customer service counter downstairs?" WHAT???!!! Did you just tell me that I should not trouble you with my return and I should want to walk all the way downstairs so you can go back to doing nothing? Then he proceeded to act like this was an inconvenience to him and even said my return was complicated. Even I know it can be handled with a slide of a Macy's credit card and zapping the return bar code on each item. If that is complicated for you, then I would hate to see how you handle real issues. This Macy's is going to be the next one closed if something doesn't change in the way they serve customers. The store has some great staff, though you have to search to find one to give your money to, and no one will help you find anything. They are just cashiers now, not salespeople. Sadly, I will still shop there as there are brands there that I love. Will be avoiding Ralph when I do go. read more

While I love Macy's, it was an embarrassment to shop in the store today. There was clothes everywhere and the shoe department was in complete disarray. I attempted to purchase a pair of Coach Boots but, they did not have my size. The sales person offered to check if they had it at another store; if I wanted to go purchase it there. The saleswomen in the Fragrances dept. (Maplewood location) seriously lack customer service skills. Visited twice to make two purchases for Christmas gifts - each time, the sales associate was terse and made me feel like I was taking up her valuable time. It seems that the primary goal of a Fragrance dept. sales associate is to make as much commission as possible, while offering as little customer service as possible. No "thank you", "have a nice day", etc. - their attitude reflects an air of arrogance and that "customers are lucky they can even spend their money at Macy's" because they apparently think that Macy's is the only gig in town that sells higher end fragrances. Not to mention the store in general is dirty and dingy. And heaven forbid you ask them for a few fragrance samples - they act like those tiny samples are coming directly out of their own purses. Macy's is nothing like Dayton's. Next time, I will go to Herberger's or Nordstrom's to make my fragrance purchases. Not only do both stores offer better values and cleaner stores, but the customer service (think just basic general professional politeness) is much better than Macy's. read more

I wouldn't even give this location one star! This is the worst Macy's I've ever been into. Horrible service. Hardly anyone is ever at the registers. It takes me a good half an hour or so just to try to pay my bill. WTF MACYS and when I do finally find a register that has a worker there, the line is long and I'm waiting forever because they are soooo slow!!!! Done with Macy's forever just because of this. Associate Somly in the Petite Department is very customer service oriented. She cares about the customer and will go the extra mile to provide help. She "stood on her head" to help me find my lost black leather belt. Her compassionate and friendliness are outstanding. read more

I don't usually write reviews, but after my horrible experience at the Maplewood Macy's I felt compelled to write one. I have worked in retail management for 4 years, so I know a lot about retail in general and what the general public expects as far as customer service is concerned. I hear a lot of complaints about return policies. Most retailers state the terms on the back of their receipt. Often you need a receipt to make a return or exchange, if you don't have a receipt you will get merchandise credit for the current selling price. If you want a price adjustment you usually need to do it within 14 days. Note: not all retailers have this same policy but this is Macy's policy and most other retailers. To make a long story short I purchased a pair of men's suit pant's for $75, later to find that I bought the wrong size. I went back at a later date to buy the right size but didn't have the pair with me that I had originally bought, so I went ahead and bought the correct size and decided to return the other pair at a later time. When I got home I saw that I was charged $100 for the exact same pair of pants when I had originally paid $75. I went in the next day to return the other pair and to get a price adjustment (I had both receipts with me). I told the lady at the counter my situation and basically laughed in my face and laughed alongside her male coworker and told me that she can't do that. I was extremely offended and asked her again (very politely) that I needed the price adjusted. She said no, so I took the pair of pants and told her that it was really strange that she couldn't do it, especially since I had both receipts. I went to another counter and the gentleman gladly returned the pair of pants and did the price adjustment. I was very disappointed in the way the lady in the men's department treated me and spoke to me. I felt extremely disrespected. I don't know if the lady at the counter wasn't trained properly or if she was trying to take advantage of me. It made me not want to shop there ever again.
