Well this place is about to close down for good. So we decided to give it a try. Old school place and very cosy seating and it was a little crowded in the seating areas. Food is served as you would be served in an Italian place. Orders first taken then food comes in waves to all tables . Food was quite ok for the price. I think we would have enjoyed it more had they had the open bar available. Though I did note some regulars had ordered drinks along with their meals But we did get to feel n taste of Atioch / Oakley / Brentwood era over 50 years ago and surrounded by all at least a generation older than us. You will NOT find a better retro Italian diner steakhouse like Old Mac's. The food is very good at an exceptionally reasonable price. The service is great too. Our server has been working at Old Mac's House over 50 years!! The ambiance is retro, with sports memorabilia decorating the walls. There's a full service bar which was busy. With your entree, you get fresh veggies (not frozen), pasta, soup AND salad with your meal. The portion of your meal is very decent for the price. You will NOT find a restaurant like Old Mac's House that serves a full meal at very reasonable price point anywhere at this point in time. Old Mac's is a rarity in this day and age. Prime rib - 5/5 The regular bit is decent, approx 8 oz. The extra cut is 16+ oz. The meat was succulent and tender. The flavor and taste of the rub was light on my cut, but I still enjoyed my prime rib. Rib eye - 4/5 A decent 10 oz cut of rib eye steak, seasoned with just salt and pepper. It was cooked to perfection. Very tasty and tender. Fresh Salmon (Cajun style) - 5/5 I was surprised with this selection on how generous the salmon fillet was. The Cajun spice was not spicy hot, which I prefer. The salmon was flaky and tender. Not hard and dry. I am so sad that Mac's Old House will be closing 6/22/25. Many people and families will be sad. June W. beat me to my opening comment. It's been announced that Mac's Old House will be serving their last meals on June 22, 2025, unless someone else buys the building and the business. There aren't many businesses like Mac's anymore. Banchero's of Hayward closed in 2012. Bertola's is long gone. We went tonight, a Wednesday, arriving at 3:30 for a 4:00 opening. There was already a line waiting in front for the doors to open. The parking lot was filling up as we waited. Some were happy to be there early. Others were wondering why they were having dinner at 4pm. While it was a bit early for us, I'd rather eat early than be stuck waiting 45 to 60 minutes for someone else to finish eating so I can get a table. I don't remember our servers name, but she was on top of her game. She took our orders for food and drink and brought everything that we asked for. I don't know how many tables she was serving but she definitely took care of ours. From drink orders to to-go boxes, everything went smoothly. Full dinners here include bread & butter, salad, soup, entree, veg and pasta. You choose your entree and everything else is included. Simple but delicious. Not exactly gourmet, but still pretty darned good as well as an excellent value. Our Extra Cut Prime Rib Dinners were $23.95 while the Regular Prime Rib Dinner was only $17.95. I hope to hit them up at least one or two more times before Mac's closes. read more

I will miss this place so much when they close. Such good memories of it, and the other similar restaurants like Bertola's and Louis Bertola's. The ambiance is straight old-school. We got there 40 minutes ahead of opening on a weeknight, and were second in line. By the time the place opened, there was quite a long line. The servers were excellent, prompt and quick. The food - how much better can you get than old-school food. The minestrone soup was nice and thick (almost gravy-ish). The bread - wow wow wow - such good Italian bread. Crispy and soft too. And the salad! We used to laugh that there was always a slice of salami for every diner. Yep, still the case! We had the Prime Rib, standard cut. Wow, I miss having a good piece of prime rib like this. No nonsense! The horseradish was a kick - much sharper than I've had it at other places! The pasta and veggies were also good (but I was already kinda stuffed from the bread to really notice them!). All in all, such a good place. Just ate our last meal at Mac's. For 40 years we've enjoyed meals here and picking up soup and bread to have some comfort food. This is the restaurant we ate at the night before we had our first child. As our son grew his first solid food that he loved were the carrots from the soup. At 33 he still loves the soup and we are bringing some home with us for him and the other kids so they can enjoy the soup for the last time. Thank you Julie for being so kind throughout the years. You can't beat the food (steaks) for the price. It's always busy and packed in her, but the hosts still do a great job getting you seated and food served quickly. Lots of charm at the establishment that has withstood the test of time but is unfortunately closing this month. We waited about an hour and a half for a table on a Thursday evening and were lucky to get seats at the bar. They do allow you to take drinks out front in paper cups while waiting for a table. The lone bartender was extremely busy and close to his limit of frustration in his interactions with customers. Dinner format is soup, salad, sides of mixed vegetables and pasta with all entrees. Mac's will soon be close, but you will step back in time if you visit. This place is blue collar bang for the buck, large hardy servings of Italian influenced food and inexpensive cocktails too like your in the 60s and 70s having grown up in San Francisco and south San Francisco. I don't think you can find a better value these days but this is not a refined experience but down to earth real folks without pretense. Parking was tight but we found a spot. Long time patrons offered an average wait time that was completely inaccurate to their surprise not realizing that the last minute frenzy to visit before closure was not a consideration. Came here on a Monday around 6pm, the anticipated wait time was about 1hr 30mins but we were called after 30mins. They don't do digital waitlists so you will have to stick around. The atmosphere was very lively since there's also a bar and everyone was very friendly. The servers were very quick and attentive despite the high volume of people. They serve soup and bread given in a large bowl to share with your table and salad afterwards as your starters before you receive your entree that additionally comes with pasta and veggies. The soup reminded me of Chef Boyardi ravioli and the salad was loaded with vinegar dressing I had the Ribeye Steak done medium rare, it was delicious and juicy! The pasta marinara was very salty but actually tasted much better the day after when i had my leftovers. The prime rib was also juicy and tasted great as well. Definitely satisfied my hunger! Please note it's a cash only establishment but they have an ATM if needed. Overall, it almost felt like eating dinner with family/friends at home with some good food and positive vibes. Piper in for my birthday dinner after a colleague recommended this place. 10/10!! It was such a great atmosphere and it was nice to see so many regulars. We arrived at 7:30 and had about an 1.5 hour wait. We were actually seated in 45 min from arriving. The time flew by hanging o it at the bar. It was nice to see there were indoor and outdoor drink options (hosts will come look for you outside). The drinks were perfect! Just the right amount of booze to keep it fun but flavorful. We had a few Tokyo teas and other vodka drinks. For dinner my group ordered 2 extra cut prime ribs, chicken dinner and the ground round. To start dinner we had the delicious minestrone soup with warmest bread, salad with a tasty vinaigrette dressing and salami slice, and then came our meals. Everyone loved their order. The food was so good and our server Julie was friendly and had perfect timing. The house was PACKED but you wouldn't know it by the service. The food was not over seasoned. You can taste the meat and the veggies were very flavorful with a healthy serving of butter. Very glad that I picked this local spot to enjoy a great quality meal. Old school family Italian restaurant with prices from 1980s. The best deal in the Bay Area. Steaks, prime rib or seafood. The first time I was here I ordered the extra thick prime rib. It was a bit over cooked for my taste so next time I'll choose medium rare rather than medium. This time I chose the ribeye at medium rare and it was perfect. Full course dinners with soup and salad and bread. Great deal! Don't miss it. It's worth the visit. Pub feel, very old school, food is filling, lower cost compared to most and the menu doesn't look like it's changed much but it's not pretentious. We arrived around 3:45p with already a line of people outside waiting for the doors to open at 4p. Mac's Old House, from what I understand, has been the local's go-to for some decades. I've probably been here about twice during my 10 year tenure in the area. It's situated in an older part of town, and is in an old historic building. I really love the quaint old town vibe it gives off, dirt parking lot and all. When you enter, there's a full bar to the right with some very affordable drinks. No wonder this is the local watering hole! I didn't get a warm and fuzzy feel from the hostess when we first came in, we stood around for a while and had to walk towards her to get seated, even though it was a half hour past opening and the tables were not filled up. We were seated at a small table (there were only 2 of us), and I politely asked the dark haired hostess if there was any way we could switch to a 4 top, at which point (mid sentence of mine), she barked NO! I didn't take it too personally, as she didn't appear to be a friendly lady to begin with. Our sweet as molasses blonde server made up for it with her great personality and smile. We ordered 2 prime rib dinners, and it was pretty decent for the price. Although I only got to eat the cap part of my steak (which was tender), because I filled myself up with the bread and SUPER yummy minestrone soup. That very simple, yet filling soup, IMO, is comparable to a famous popular spot I've been to in S.F. We also got a side salad, and a little bit of pasta with our meals. Now folks, tell me where on earth (or at least the Bay Area), can you find a generously portioned decent meal like this for less than $20? I bet you can't even cook this yourself for that price. Hell, one slab of prime rib at the grocery store is $25. Overall, this place deserves the reputation it has for its food, and the nostalgic feel is a nice change of scenery when all restaurants have the same modern sterile look. Mac's knows what they do and they do it well. We came here as everything else was closed on NYD night. They are open until 10PM everyday. Their menu is as basic as it gets. All sides are family-style (minestrone soup, bread, and salad) while you choose your main entrée from steak, prime rib, chicken, calamari, etc. The soup was delicious, as was the warm bread. My chicken was good and hit the spot. Our waitress was a bit abrupt at the first but softened as time went on. They do not have your usual run of the mill beers here. They have 4 or 5 rotating craft beers on tap and craft beers in bottles. They also have a huge selection of liquor behind the bar. We were pleased with the beers they had and went for a round or two. We ordered the rib eye and extra cut prime rib. The sides are okay, but we came for the meat and that didn't disappoint. We had lots of leftovers that turned into 2 more meals! We got there on a Friday just before 6pm and waited for about 25-30 min for a table. We beat the rush and had a drink at the bar while we waited. After 6pm people started pouring in. Food comes pretty fast, but it did take awhile to get the check and pay, they're really busy so it's understandable. It also gets very loud in there, so don't expect to have a romantic dinner. It feels like a speakeasy! Old charm, cash only, no reservations but you just have to know. It's open daily from 4-10. Just go! The value, the service and the atmosphere are all wonderful. I love the craftsman style. It is not fancy at all, but cozy and charming. We got a table by the fireplace. We went around the holidays so it is decorated for Christmas which adds even more charm. Their prime rib is 15.99 and the large cut is I think 21.99. You can't beat these prices! They are out of the 80s! They have a bar but not much of a wine selection. That's ok! Then I asked could we have another menu and her response was we're short menus and walked the bell off! The food is very good and reasonable. Each table is served a huge bowl of homemade soup to split. You get hot, freshly baked bread. Each entree is served with pasta and fresh (not frozen) mixed vegetables. The alcoholic drinks are extremely inexpensive. Nothing over $12, I don't think. Even a double. Most are under $10. It's always very crowded and has a family atmosphere. My issue is the filthy toilets in the restrooms. There's no excuse. Hire a company to come in if no staff are able. I hope the kitchen is decent. You know what they say, when the restrooms aren't clean... The staff are very friendly and attentive. I would have given more stars because the food is stellar. It's just the restrooms. I visited twice to try the famous prime rib and cajun red snapper. The quantity of food you get for the price is unbelievably cheap, but that also means don't expect high quality food. The meal came with a big bowl of soup, bread and butter, salad, and the entree of your choosing. The food and ambiance seems very 80's or 90's style. The warm bread and butter was the highlight of my meal! I couldn't stop eating it. The soup was thick minestrone soup that is most likely canned or bagged. The salad was crisp and well dressed but maybe a tad too sour for me. I've tried the regular and the extra thick prime rib medium rare. For some reason the extra thick one was very grisly and fatty and had to cut away most of it. The regular one I had was more tender. For both , the beef flavor was not very prominent. The red snapper prepared cajun style was a tad too greasy, but at least it wasn't dry. The sides that come with the meal are the butter boiled veggies and boiled pasta topped with marinara sauce (probably from a can too), which were fine. This restaurant is practically in my backyard, so I'll be returning if I am too lazy to cook or go out far for dinner. read more

I've been a long time customer for at least 30 years... my favorite, old-school Italian restaurant. (Reminiscent of Banchero's restaurant in Hayward or Bertola's in Oakland... both closed many years ago). Where else can you get soup, bread, salad, and a generous main course with sides for around $12-$20? An unhealthy fast food burger, fries, and a soda in a bag would cost you about that much. The busy waitresses always do their best and I've never had bad service. Some of them have been there since day one and most have been there for a very long time. It's like a family. The soup is amazing... You can make a meal out of soup and bread. And many do... Prime rib is a favorite, but I also enjoy the ribeye. Calamari as also fantastic. My daughter loves the chicken. And the drink prices! For half the price of a single well drink at just about any other restaurant, you can get a top shelf double here!
