The Washington Post used to publish a food column called "Crummy But Good" which highlighted places with great food but little in the way of aesthetics. To be sure, Mac's is such a place...
Mac's is a nondescript country store and gas station on Highway 151 in Roseland that happens to sell outstanding fried chicken - crisp and moist with just the right seasoning. This is what fried chicken is about, not that greasy junk at KFC. Indeed, Mac's chicken is as good, if not better, than Mitchell's in Lynchburg (also in the Crummy But Good genre).
Choose the number of pieces, white or dark meat and whether or not you want a side and dinner rolls.
Mac's offers other items, but it's hard to make a case when the chicken is this good.
The store managers are friendly and there are a handful of rustic tables in the back of the store should you wish to dine-in. Mac's is a great place to stop for lunch while visiting the local orchards.
If you're willing to overlook the exterior, great fried chicken will be your reward. Just be sure to top off your tank before heading back to town. read more
