    Dog plate

The people who work here are so sweet and helpful and the food was delicious. We had the cheese plate as an appetizer and I got a Ham sandwich. The back patio has the best vibes and is dog friendly! They even brought ours a plate of turkey and cheese

Roast beef sandwich special and French grilled cheese. So good!!!

Food was great, atmosphere was amazing, food service!!! I highly recommend this gem. We will return. Be patient with waiting for your food, small, one man kitchen.

Went for lunch with a large group of girls for my friend's bachelorette party! The restaurant was so lovely. It had a quaint, homey vibe. We had ten of us and even though there was only one server working, she was really wonderful and attentive! They set up the tent in the backyard for us. They even decorated it really nicely with fairy lights and a table cloth! The food was also awesome. Lots of options for vegetarians! If we were there longer we would have loved to go for a wine dinner!

The food was so bad that it disappeared before it arrived Just kidding It was excellent and I didn't have time to take pictures before eating. Definitely, recommend it. Our server/owner was very pleasant and polite. Just imagine to overhear people next table coming for 27 years and 13 years to this restaurant wawwwww! I never experienced any such loyalty! The food is excellent and I highly recommend it

Wonderful service, and delicious food. The space is cute and cozy. They also have outdoor seating on a little backyard/garden area. Looked like they sold some good wines, chocolate and other items in the store at the front. Definitely worth stopping in. You may want to make a reservation since the dining room is small.

I was with some friends in early November for a weekend getaway. I'm lucky to have a friend who has a home in Wintergreen and is generous in inviting others to join them. They've owned their house for 12 years and know the area well. One of the must-go restaurants for them is Basic Necessities, so we made a reservation for Saturday night. This place is so cute and rustic...a real quaint bistro cafe feel. There are just a handful of tables so make a reservation. The menu is limited and based on what they can buy. On the night we went, they had butternut squash soup and seared scallops for appetizers and barramundi (white fish), chèvre-stuffed chicken, greens pie and a fettuccine Alfredo with chorizo. I ordered the scallops and barramundi. We also ordered a bottle of rose. The scallops were very good and well prepared. They were serves with a purée and frisée. The barramundi was served with potatoes, green beans, broccolini and a citrus beurre blanc. Really good. The fish was super fresh. Forgot to mention that the prices are totally reasonable for the amount and quality of food. You get bread, salad and sides with every entree. They also have an acoustic guitar player, which really made the atmosphere lovely. I felt bad that my back was to him, but it didn't mean I wasn't enjoying his talent--I was just savoring a great meal.

Very Charming Quaint Dining Experience in Nellysford VA

And then returned for a delicious brunch on Sunday morning before heading home. The wine selection was not what my husband or I would like to drink with a nice dinner, but when we asked our waiter if there was a more extensive list she was able to check the back and came out with a delicious wine (Caymus) that we both love and were so glad they had on hand. The pricing for the bottle was also excellent, not an extravagant up charge. Julia was our waitress both evenings and she was absolutely fabulous, excellent taste in meal choices and so attentive. With covid having made some of the dining options at Wintergreen close it was so nice to have this location available for a nicer meal. Our first night we enjoyed the chefs special broccoli/cheese soup, Pear & Goat Salad, chefs special of Duck, and the Classic New York Style Cheesecake. All were FABULOUS. The second evening we enjoyed the Soup De Jour, Pear & Goat Salad, baby gem Caesar, Sea scallops, and the Creme Brûlée. All our food was absolutely delicious and cooked exactly to what we ordered. 10/10 would recommend this place and we will most definitely return on our next trip to wintergreen.

When you're made to fill like you're burdening the staff before you even order, it's not a great start. I asked another local business was Chirios was and he responded, "depends on who's making your food" lol. I've worked in similar looking pizzerias, so the condition of the "kitchen" didn't concern me much. It actually kinda feels like you're in the back of house, rather than in a dining room. The local free library was interesting. I ordered a cold Italian. I wasn't expecting much when I first saw the bread, but the sandwich turned out to be decently tasty. My biggest complaint is the amount of oil added to the sub. The menu doesn't mention vinegar and oil, which made me worry the sandwich might be dry. I usually opt for vinegar but skip the oil. The Italian included both, but way to much oil. You can see in the pic, the amount of oil pooled in the to-go box. And that's after what soaked into the bread! I think I would have enjoyed the sub way more if I had asked for no oil. All that being said, I would def go back when I'm in the area.

The setting was exceptional: perched beside the cidery with a pasture stretching out nearby, it had that perfect mix of open space and laid-back charm. For a first outing, I don't have much to compare it to, but it's hard to imagine a better start. Connectivity was surprisingly excellent--we were pulling 5G UW, which felt like a small miracle and made everything easier. The location couldn't have been more convenient, with trails, venues, and restaurants all close at hand. The cidery itself offered around two dozen options, and the Imperial Peach quickly became our go-to libation. And yes, they've got a happy hour at the cidery--and you already know that's my favorite time of day. Within three miles, you've got IGA, the ABC store, and Beltie's, while Devil's Backbone sits right across the street. The on-site BBQ Beast delivered exactly what you'd hope for--no surprises, just solid, satisfying fare. We lucked into something special during our stay, landing right in the middle of a migration path. One morning alone brought the sights and sounds of over 25 bird species--nature putting on a full show. All told, it's a fantastic place to boondock. We enjoyed it enough to tack on an extra night, which says plenty. Here's hoping the rest of our adventures measure

But the beer had other ideas. As expected, it was excellent--cold, confident, and clearly in no mood to be rushed. Everything was clean and orderly. The burger arrived and did not disappoint. Honest, well-made, the sort of meal that reminds you why you ordered it in the first place. My wife's brisket sandwich, meanwhile, was everything brisket ought to be--tender, rich, and just indulgent enough to feel like a reward rather than a mistake. Fries came alongside, hot and crisp, doing their job without complaint or ceremony. And then, on the way out--as these things tend to happen--we stopped at the bar. That's where we met Vance. What followed was less a quick cocktail and more a conversation with drinks attached. The cocktails were excellent, but the company made them memorable. Vance makes a great adult beverage. We visited around 3:00 p.m., well before the dinner rush, so we weren't expecting service delays or other issues. Unfortunately, the food was bland, overly oily, and significantly overpriced for the quality. We used to come here regularly and always enjoyed it, but it just isn't what it once was. The dining area was also uncomfortably warm, as the air conditioning didn't appear to be on. The only relief came when the kitchen door opened. Service felt rushed and impersonal as well--we were greeted with a curt "Where do you want this plate?" when our food arrived, which didn't make us feel particularly welcome. The property itself remains a lovely place to spend some time outdoors, but based on this visit, we wouldn't recommend it as a destination for dinner. We hope the restaurant can return to the level of quality and hospitality it once offered.
