We've driven past here several times while in the area and finally decided to stop in this winter. I'm glad we did. We also ate here this spring. Both times has its charms! Food (5/5): Best grilled cheese! We always split one and get the daily soup. We've not been disappointed. If you get a bottle of wine you pay a corkage fee. Service (5/5): Always nice service here! Ambiance (4/5): This reminds me of being in an eclectic country house. The rustic decor reminds me of a grandma- perfect for the country grandma vibe!

Roast beef sandwich special and French grilled cheese. So good!!!

Food was great, atmosphere was amazing, food service!!! I highly recommend this gem. We will return. Be patient with waiting for your food, small, one man kitchen.

Went for lunch with a large group of girls for my friend's bachelorette party! The restaurant was so lovely. It had a quaint, homey vibe. We had ten of us and even though there was only one server working, she was really wonderful and attentive! They set up the tent in the backyard for us. They even decorated it really nicely with fairy lights and a table cloth! The food was also awesome. Lots of options for vegetarians! If we were there longer we would have loved to go for a wine dinner!

The food was so bad that it disappeared before it arrived Just kidding It was excellent and I didn't have time to take pictures before eating. Definitely, recommend it. Our server/owner was very pleasant and polite. Just imagine to overhear people next table coming for 27 years and 13 years to this restaurant wawwwww! I never experienced any such loyalty! The food is excellent and I highly recommend it

Wonderful service, and delicious food. The space is cute and cozy. They also have outdoor seating on a little backyard/garden area. Looked like they sold some good wines, chocolate and other items in the store at the front. Definitely worth stopping in. You may want to make a reservation since the dining room is small.

I was with some friends in early November for a weekend getaway. I'm lucky to have a friend who has a home in Wintergreen and is generous in inviting others to join them. They've owned their house for 12 years and know the area well. One of the must-go restaurants for them is Basic Necessities, so we made a reservation for Saturday night. This place is so cute and rustic...a real quaint bistro cafe feel. There are just a handful of tables so make a reservation. The menu is limited and based on what they can buy. On the night we went, they had butternut squash soup and seared scallops for appetizers and barramundi (white fish), chèvre-stuffed chicken, greens pie and a fettuccine Alfredo with chorizo. I ordered the scallops and barramundi. We also ordered a bottle of rose. The scallops were very good and well prepared. They were serves with a purée and frisée. The barramundi was served with potatoes, green beans, broccolini and a citrus beurre blanc. Really good. The fish was super fresh. Forgot to mention that the prices are totally reasonable for the amount and quality of food. You get bread, salad and sides with every entree. They also have an acoustic guitar player, which really made the atmosphere lovely. I felt bad that my back was to him, but it didn't mean I wasn't enjoying his talent--I was just savoring a great meal.

We were tucked in down near Devils Backbone Brewing Company, enjoying the kind of getaway folks put on postcards. My coffee, however, was less postcard and more field exercise--Army strong, boiled on a camp stove, poured out of a percolator that's likely seen more campaigns than I have. My wife took one sip and gave me that look... the one that says, "I love you, but this is unacceptable." So we broke camp early and pointed ourselves back toward civilization. About three miles down the road she spotted Belties. Now I've driven past that place more times than I can count, back when it looked like an old house that had just given up on things. But somebody got hold of it and turned that sow's ear into something you'd be proud to show company. We pulled in, and right off the bat--you could tell--they knew what they were doing. Service was quick, friendly, no fuss. The kind of place where nobody's trying too hard, which is usually when things turn out just right. The food? Lord have mercy. Every bit of it. And the atmosphere--well, it had character without trying to beat you over the head with it. That's a rare combination these days. Most places either feel like a museum or a storage unit. This one felt like the establishment wanted you to relax. And the coffee... now that was coffee. Not punishment in a cup. The kind you sit with for a minute and reconsider your life choices--like why you ever thought campfire tar water was a good idea. We'll be back. For the coffee, sure--but I've got a feeling we won't be leaving empty-handed next time. There'll be a goody bag involved. Maybe two. Some lessons you learn the hard way. Being near Wintergreen Resort it draws a diverse crowd of tourists and locals, and the prices reflect that. The day we visited (Sunday at noon) there was a steady flow of guests. The line would get long but diminish quickly. The staff was super friendly and brought the food out quickly. The menu includes biscuit and pastry centered creations. The biscuits are huge and flaky. The pastry I tried was also delicious. The atmosphere they are going for is farm chic. The downside is it all comes off a little contrived. A pen with 4 Scottish Beltie cows and a small barn in the back by the parking, but a glance to the left you see not a rolling farm, but a standard ranch style house that must endure the constant traffic. The food is good, but not $13 chicken biscuit good. I ordered the Whoa Nelly ( biscuit with fried chicken, fried tomato, pimento cheese, and habanero jam). Thankfully I got the jam on the side bc it was a bit too spicy for me. I also fear that it would have been the only thing I would have tasted. The biscuit was good as was the chicken, but I could not taste the tomato or the pimento cheese at all. If I had added that jam it would have overwhelmed everything. The Chicken Pot Pie featuring a biscuit as the crust was a good choice. A crusty biscuit resting atop a rich creamy chicken and veg filling. It could have used a bit more savory seasoning, but overall a solid choice. The big question: would I return? Yes, but I am not going to go out of my way. It's decent food but overpriced for what it is.

Around the next bend is Shady's. Shady's is a standard convenience store/gas station. It's a little drab on the inside, but the people who work here are pretty awesome and that brightens it up. The a/c functions (I think), the beverage coolers are well stocked with every type of liquid refreshment, there are plenty of snacks, the gas pumps work, and the stray cats outside begging for food are really good at it. The day I stopped in, Shady's air conditioning wasn't working and the employee was sitting outside in the shade; but compared with the inside of my car, I could have been at the north pole. The cold water numbed my frustration, but then so did the friendly employee who apologized for the lack of air conditioning and then spent time commiserating. I don't know though, she only might have been pretending empathy once I started talking about the umbrella drinks in the middle of the highway.

But the beer had other ideas. As expected, it was excellent--cold, confident, and clearly in no mood to be rushed. Everything was clean and orderly. The burger arrived and did not disappoint. Honest, well-made, the sort of meal that reminds you why you ordered it in the first place. My wife's brisket sandwich, meanwhile, was everything brisket ought to be--tender, rich, and just indulgent enough to feel like a reward rather than a mistake. Fries came alongside, hot and crisp, doing their job without complaint or ceremony. And then, on the way out--as these things tend to happen--we stopped at the bar. That's where we met Vance. What followed was less a quick cocktail and more a conversation with drinks attached. The cocktails were excellent, but the company made them memorable. Vance makes a great adult beverage. All in all, Devil's Backbone isn't just a place to eat and drink. It's a place where a simple plan quietly turns into a better evening than you expected.

The pricing for the bottle was also excellent, not an extravagant up charge. Julia was our waitress both evenings and she was absolutely fabulous, excellent taste in meal choices and so attentive. With covid having made some of the dining options at Wintergreen close it was so nice to have this location available for a nicer meal. Our first night we enjoyed the chefs special broccoli/cheese soup, Pear & Goat Salad, chefs special of Duck, and the Classic New York Style Cheesecake. All were FABULOUS. The second evening we enjoyed the Soup De Jour, Pear & Goat Salad, baby gem Caesar, Sea scallops, and the Creme Brûlée.
