Having only been open since September/October 2015, Mackenzie's already has a strong customer base. After a lovely meal at East Avenue Bakehouse they recommended we wander up to Mackenzie's for a cocktail.
It's a large space with the bar positioned immediately as you enter, encouraging you to order before taking a seat; there's plenty of the latter though so don't worry if you need to take your time. The bartender was very friendly and grabbed us a cocktail menu but also offering alternatives - although they only list the whisky based cocktails, they have a fully stocked bar available.
I ordered a whisky sour and the other half had an old fashioned. Whilst they were being made, we spotted a signed Liverpool shirt behind the bar - signed by none other than current Liverpool FC manager Jurgen Klopp. The bartender explained it was part of a raffle and there was no hesitation in handing over a couple of quid in return for raffle tickets and the chance to win!
We took our drinks to the corner of the bar and some very comfortable seating. It's quite regally decorated, with large leather benches and armchairs, and some very peculiar paintings. You'll know when you see them (think that sad clown portrait you used to be able to buy on The Sims...)
Both drinks were delicious, my sour being nice and sharp but with a real whisky kick. It was nice to have a cocktail that wasn't too overpowering but also didn't forget the main ingredient - and real star of the show!
A great recommendation which I'm sure will become a staple of Liverpool's cocktail drinking scene. read more
