First, the setting is breathtaking: gorgeous green pine tree forest surrounding the wedding ceremony site, mountains in the background, perfect weather (mid-80s all day, and no wind) and the beautiful wedding village, Pinegri-La. Pinegri-La has 5 cabins that can sleep from 6 to 12 people, depending on the cabin, as well as a camping area. We had 50 guests stay onsite in cabins and camp. The rest of our guests, stayed at the Dunsmuir Lodge and Railroad Park, which are about a half hour away. We came up Thursday night and spent the weekend with our friends and family. Everyone had a great time walking to nearby swimming holes and alpine lakes. At night, we would barbecue and roast S'mores and talk into the late hours over the campfire. We had our rehearsal dinner/bbq Friday night, and Beth and John pulled if off without a hitch. The food was great, and the setting was perfect. On the wedding day, guests went for hikes while my bridesmaids and I got ready in Pinegri-La's bridal dressing room (very cute room with comfy couches and mirrors). The ceremony was beautiful! I can't say enough about how beautiful this ceremony site is--the most beautiful wedding site I've ever seen -- and I'm not just saying that cause it was my wedding. For the dinner, the food was perfect -- very delicious and on time and fresh and hot! Beth and John (the owners) and their staff do a wonderful job. We had about 140 guests, and they handled it perfectly. They also had someone in the nearby town make the cake, and it was delicious and beautiful too. Then we danced until we wanted (no curfew!) All our guests -- old and young alike -- said it was the funnest wedding they had ever been to. The only downside to this location is that it is a half-hour drive up a winding mountain roud. But, it is paved all the way, and no one seemed to complain about it. All in all, it was the best day of our lives, and we were very sad when it was all over....

However, there were *several* problems which made my experience less than ideal. I would like to frame this review as me helping anyone who might be considering Shasta weddings as a venue, not complaining. I am grateful for our experience but I would have done things completely different had I known the following information: First of all, the most major problem is that there is no service & no wifi. I had no idea about this, as we visited in June & had service at the time. Regardless, the day of the ceremony, we arrived & had no service. This was problematic because several people did not have directions so a lot of people were late or unable to come because they never got directions. Further, Shasta Weddings has a satellite & wifi, but Beth wouldn't share it because it would slow down her service. Several people asked & she ignored them. Then those people were bugging me, which annoyed me on my wedding day. Not only was this bad for directions, but it was bad for our musical selections. Any songs/music not downloaded were unable to be downloaded. So, if you're planning a wedding at Shasta Weddings, you need to definitely have everyone on the same page as far as directions, knowing that there is no service, & the DJ having all the music pre-selected & downloaded. Not too hard, but in my opinion, unfair... even though, admittedly, we were never promised wifi or service. Second of all, I did not realize that check in for EVERYONE was by 5pm. This makes absolutely no sense for a DESTINATION wedding in the middle of nowhere... No one lived close. Everyone had to travel. Why should they be expected to arrive no later than 5pm? With that in mind, the way that check in was done was bizarre. Beth had mentioned to my mother-in-law that she could be "in charge" of people checking in after 5. Several of my friends & family members either didn't end up coming, or left the venue to go get a hotel because it was snowing. Many also got there when my mother-in-law wasn't sitting at the table waiting. Regardless, the payment for those guests was taken out of our deposit. Thus, WE were still responsible for paying for the guests that couldn't stay due to weather, not being able to find the venue, or just didn't end up coming. etc. I had no idea about this, as my last update was sent to her 9/21 for my 9/28 wedding, & on the paper it is written "You are not committed to the placements but we can help if something seems amiss." which is interesting because apparently i had committed to those placements... since i had to pay. With this in mind, i would suggest hiring someone to take care of the names/collect the money, so that you will have some of your deposit left back! Beyond that, she was generous with the rest of the deposit, as we left in a hurry & didn't clean much beyond the basics. she even did not charge us for the "campers" who were supposed to camp but obviously could not since it was freezing. So i am grateful for that! As i said, I would hire someone for that & save yourself a few hundred bucks. Lastly, just so any brides-to-be are wondering about the nearest town, Redding, for beauty treatments... i had some of the worst experiences in my life in that town! It was sad :( I left them all Yelp reviews so feel free to check. For some good news, I choose Sequoua photography for my pictures, & she did an amazing job. She is listed on their vender sites. LASTLY- if you are a vegan or vegetarian, I recommend making your own food instead of eating the food Beth & co make. Apparently the meat sandwiches they made were AMAZING (as was the vegan chili- so so good! ) BUT the sandwiches were.... cucumber & hummus.... Every vegan came up to me CONFUSED & slightly offended lol. But all in all, it's a great venue especially if you are simultaneously on top of your shit & also not really caring how things might end up, & are willing to do the aforementioned suggestions. LASTLY- the curfew for all guests not staying on site is midnight... This is kind of annoying but understandable for the way the road is set up (essentially a paved, one-lane, spooky road) it might be done for safety purposes... however, later than midnight I doubt anyone is coming up that road, so going down should be even less of a hazard at that point. This disappointed a lot of our Airbnb guests who wanted to party all night with us.... but, since it was soooOooo cold, we didn't even end up partying all night, so it wasn't too bad! Beth & John were super nice. The venue is gorgeous. They were also very communicative & asked me if i needed things frequently. So no hard feelings, it was an amazing time. I just wanted to advise other people how to navigate this venue so that they can have a slightly better experience than I did.

Cindy opened the Guest House to us and it was amazing. We spent every evening on the porch looking at Mt Shasta, smelling the pines and one evening watching a bear lumber down the driveway. Breakfast was served at the McCloud Hotel. We placed our order the night before and the meals were made to order, on time, a perfect portion and very delicious. Sight seeing, around the area, was really fun. We fished, played golf at the McCloud golf course, swam in the river, took drives and saw where family had lived. Cindy has pleasant staff and we enjoyed chatting with Nicole. This is an out of the way and beautiful part of California. I strongly suggest the Guest House or the McCloud Hotel.

Whenever I come to Mount Shasta, I always stay at the Stoney Brook Inn. A full hot and cold breakfast buffet is included in the rate, and there is a community fridge and microwave on the deck. Some of the rooms have kitchenettes - about $99 for a double. The inn is in a building built in the late 1800s and used to provide lodging for the single men who worked in this old logging town. Yes, it's got older furniture and the building is due for some maintenance, but the owner Hiromi Suzuki keeps it impeccably clean. The tap water is magical! Place a glass on the countertop and little bubbles will form on the sides of your glass. Nestle wanted to come and bottle it, but you can enjoy it for free. (All of the water in the Shasta area is vibrant and pure. The local hospital has dispensation to use tap water if there is an emergency and sterile water is unavailable. There is also a separate building called the Kiva, which is available for rent at $200/day for workshops and the like. Easily holds a group of 25 in a wooden yurt-like structure crafted with 8 walls and oriented in a geometrical alignment. Walking Eagle, a Karuk elder, maintains a sweat lodge on the property. Groups can arrange for a safe and gentle sweat lodge experience. Sauna and outdoor hot tub on the property. So nice to soak in the magical water.

McCloud in particular is known for putting on some fantastic festivals through their active Chamber of Commerce and other organizations. Their annual Mushroom Festival brings in over 60,000 people from all over California, Oregon, Washington, and Nevada for the weekend. It offers a variety of Music, Food, Wine, a mushroom farmers market, a series of educational Mushroom classes by professional mycologists from all over the world. And a Crafters/Art market featuring unique, one of a kind and stunning works of art. At the base of Mt. Shasta, McCloud is 3.5 miles from the town of Mt. Shasta. It feels like a home, not like a hotel. Also, price here is so freaking reasonable it seems unreal. It was midweek when we stayed, but the cost was $80! First let me say that people are very nice to talk to. Having said that I will also say, there is a…read moreton of maintenance needed here. Not just paint and fixing up. But gutters need to be cleared and the property needs to be cleaned up. It is almost in ramshackle condition. The rooms are run down and there is dirt and dust all over. We planned a trip and most of it was nice. Even when we stopped at an old hotspring property in eastern Oregon the people we're working really hard to get it to nice condition. Here, people seem like they're waiting for a miracle. There's a 15 year old boy living here his parents manage the place and there is a ton of leaves and gutters very close to the ground full of leaves. I would make my kid contribute if I was managing this place. So beyond the disrepair and dirt. There's items left like toothpaste from previous people. If I was not so tired from driving and traveling I would demand my money back and keep going. Perplexity Ai told about this place a week ago and then I called to ask about the "aviary" that was advertised that was said to be extensive and really cool. They said it was here. It was a surprise for our little one. I called today to make sure everything was in order on my way down and they still said the aviary was here. The reason we chose the place. We get here and there is no aviary. And the birds were let loose because the fire a couple of years back. Ok that is fine but tell me there's an aviary and birds her two times. Again the people are nice but not cut out to manage a motel. They don't have the energy to do it. Even with a 15 year old in his prime that could help. The place is a dump and one step from being a tear down or sold to someone that has the energy to do something with it. Cash price was cheap for California but still. Not worth it with cleanliness and left over items. Never mind the worn out doors floors and everything else. If I wasn't tired I would leave. Don't stop here unless there's nothing else. However the clerk which I believe was the owner, was very helpful. After helping me to calm down we worked it through and figured out that my daughter-in-law had actually booked me under her name that's why we cannot find the reservation. The hotel room itself, was clean and comfortable. I will say the rooms are not particularly large. I do have a walker and was not able to enter into the restroom with my walker which made it difficult, nor was there a lot of room between the bed and the microwave / fridge for my walker but that was at least doable. However both the owner and his wife were very helpful and very kind! The wife and I could not figure out how to get the TV on, and one quick call to the husband and it was up and running. Furthermore what impress me the most, was after checking out and getting my taxi to the Greyhound station, the wife came running up to me. She had left the hotel and followed me to the Greyhound station, explaining that I had left my medication in the fridge along with my phone cord. She went above and beyond and I would highly recommend this hotel to anybody.
