This place is the absolute worst. I lived there for one year. Never again, greystar. (1) They gouge utility bills through a "3rd party" utility bill consolidation tool -- this is just software used by their office to add a surcharge to your utility payments. My monthly utility bill incrementally increased by 25-50% every 2-3 months. My average bill nearly tripled during my tenancy. Credits from service providers were manually removed from my master billing statement. (2) Without notice, they retroactively charged my account for monthly parking before the lot was even opened. They "found my underpayment" while performing a "full account audit." (3) bait and switch: They snuck in an increase to my monthly rent on the day of my move-in, presented as a fix to a non-related clerical error in my lease. I had to threaten legal action before they would resolve. (4) Secure bicycle storage and parking garage repeatedly accessed by thiefs. Management took no responsibility and provided no increased security measures. (5) Fake reviews: They bribe prospective tenants at viewings to post positive reviews for gifts. They offered me a rent discount to remove a negative review that wasn't even mine shortly after I moved in. On Facebook, greystar employees openly review their own properties. (6) You're not getting your security deposit back, even if you leave your apartment in perfect condition. Ex: I was charged $150 for less than 5 square feet of touch-up painting. They added charges like this until my deposit was depleted. (7) Unbearably hot: In summer, your apartment will hit 90* during the day (even if it doesn't get above 85* outside), and never get below 80* during the night. (8) They tried to raise my rent at the start of shelter-in-place when my lease ended. I moved out the moment my lease expired. This place is scummy AF. Greystar's Real estate license should be investigated and suspended or revoked. Avoid MacArthur Commons like the plague! read more

I lived in this building for over a year. Things people should know before you move in! 1) the office emailed people asking them to write good reviews (so don't believe what is written here) 2) It is WAY over priced and they nickel & dime you to death. I moved in to the building in Feb19 and was told the amenities that I was paying for would be open by June. This not only did not happen but it was not until mid Oct. before everything was open. SO I paid 7mo worth of amenities that I never had access to. No refund or moneys returned for this. 3) They constantly are harassing you for more money even when you pay them on time every month. EXAMPLE 1 I had a bill for 400$ put on my door with no explanation of what it was for and I spent hours going through monthly payments trying to determine where the discrepancies were. I determined an error on my behalf and quickly paid it accounting for about 250$ of the 400$. I never did find out what the other 250$ was supposedly for. When I expressed this and frustrations that I was the one having to do this I was told by the leasing office "its not our job to check your payments every month to see they match.".yes it is. YOU ARE A PROPERTY MANAGER. I never did figure out what this was for and the money was just tacked on to "ledger" that has no breakdown by month and it was taken out of my deposit/billed me when I moved out without explanation of what it was for. When I tried to work with corporate regarding this it was about as useless. I ended up just paying it because was so sick of wasting my time and energy on it. EXAMPLE 2 When my lease was up at the end of Feb 20 I spoke to the property manager Amanda and it was agreed; in writing that I would be allowed to stay month to month at no additional fees. Then in April 20 I got an email from Jessica leasing agent saying they would no longer be honoring this and I would be required to pay an additional 250$ a month as a month to month fee. It was only after I threatened to speak to a lawyer they tried to say this was an error. I moved out regardless. EXAMPLE 3 You are charged rent that is nothing but the actual apartment, then a 35$ fee for someone to pick up your trash at your door every month that you can not opt out of (and they do not pick up on Monday OR Tuesdays), another trash fee for just the cost of the trash, water, water heating, pet rent even if it is a cat in units with all hardwood flooring, parking fee which is well over 200$ a month now. I got a "deal" at 180$. What starts out sounding reasonable quickly becomes outrageously over priced with all the fees. I found out the weekend that I moved out that I was not the only person they tried charge additional fees to during the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic. This is wrong on so many levels. 4) Communication between office staff regarding what one person promises you to another seems to be non-existent. When I moved in and got this "deal" on parking there was no mention of having to move to the parking garage in the other building when it opened. Then one day after the new building opened they turned off my garage clicker and told me I had to move because I was not paying the higher rate of 250$ for parking even though my lease was 180$ without stipulations. It was only after I went to the office and raised hell about them trying to bait and switch me on this that they said ok and turned my garage access for the original building back on. 5) there is NO AC in any of the units even though it is a new building that costs a fortune. The building is SO HOT. I never once turned my heat on even in the winter. 6) Windows are story book windows and open inward resulting in the inability to close the blinds and have your window open (needless to say this is a huge problem if there is NO AC) 7) While there are a lot of features to protect doors in the building it is easy to get around if you have even 1/2 a brain. The earlier post about the bikes is 100% accurate. Someone broke into the "secure" garage and bike room and was in there for several hours stealing some 20+ bikes. The only people who are worth anything are the guys in maintenance. They are all friendly, quick to respond, and do good work. read more

I wanted to take the time to leave a review for the staff at MacArthur Commons. I've lived here for 6 months and the staff has been nothing but accommodating, knowledgeable and kind throughout this entire COVID process. They constantly send out emails in regards to new restrictions, updates on policies and procedures and are still making efforts to do things for residents (COVID friendly). I've spoken to Jessica on multiple occasions in regards to the gym opening and it seems like the office is doing as much as they can. It seems to be the counties that are putting the restrictions which is totally understandable as to why we cannot have them open. The new manager is beyond kind as well as the rest of the office staff. I dealt with the maintenance team on a few occasions as well and they are all very smart and organized. My work orders are always responded to within 24 hours. It's sad to see previous reviews as everyone seems to forget that we are all new to this pandemic but I wanted to make sure I did my part to show my appreciation to the MacArthur Commons staff. I would definitely recommend this apartment community to all of my friends and/or family. read more

I was looking for a place that was modern, with washer/dryer and parking and also close to the BART. Found it. Everyone I have spoken to has been welcoming and patient. I had some craziness at work that make me slow in responding but they were so patient and welcoming. If I was them, I would have been annoyed with me. They never once seemed annoyed. Every time I arrived at the office, they seem to truly enjoy what they do and the others they are working with. Just a nice vibe. Also, excited to be close to farmers market and interesting restaurants. read more

I lived here for 2 years. This place has many ups and downs but is very conveniently located. Pros: it's cute and comfortable style living, maintenance is great they're very friendly and responsive. Cons: management is often subpar. I never received timely call backs, the things in the apartment are not of any great quality, the counters stain easily, floorboards separate easily, and upon move out they charge ridiculous amounts for things that are normal wear and tear. Also, packages were often stolen and there was zero accountability. Finally, a bunch of the common spaces were often shut down for extremely long periods of time (ex: the pool was closed for the entire summer). All in all, rent and other fees were entirely too high for the experience I received. To me, it's extremely important to provide what you sell and so for majority of the things promised to be out of commission for so long I feel cheated of my living experience in many ways. read more

I'm rating it a one star due to the following: 1) amid COVID-19 we have no access to amenities (something that we pay rent towards as part of our package) we should get a reimbursement from the property. But we aren't! We're essentially paying for something that we are not using. 2) There is no hand towel rack in the bathroom. I had to install one myself. 3) Bathroom shower pressure is super low. Water pushes about 1.5 feet only 4) There's no medicine cabinet. Something that would be super useful! 5) Laundry hot water doesn't work. I'm lucky to get warm water for my whites. 6) The design of window shutters is ridiculous. Just completely bad design. 7) Some or their staff can be super rude 8) Stolen mail packages on the regular 9) No Air conditioner in any of the rooms. It gets super hot in the evening. We can't open the window because it's super noisy from the freeway. 10) Ridiculous high parking fees. $250 per month. This is Oakland not downtown San Francisco. 11) The property is so cheap that they decided to discontinue providing paper cups for the coffee machine in the lobby because the cups "cost them too much" mind you rent here is not cheap, it's above $3000 per month for a tiny space. So they have the $$$ to supply us with basic paper cups. 12) There's no sense of warmth and welcome feeling from the staff. 13) Balcony door has no screen door, so if we want to let some air in during the day we have to be okay with flies being indoor. Remember we have no AC either! 14) People smoke in the elevators. 15) They won't allow you to use their dolly to move in heavy items. Their excuse is due to COVID, they can disinfect them prior and post use. Except that they don't give a damn about their residents. They simply pretend to! 16) Elevator is often broken and not working for several days 17) Stolen bikes from bike storage room 18) A car window was smashed inside of the parking garage (despite having "security") read more

The leasing agents are nice till you sign the lease. Everything else falls apart after - for a "green building", this is highest utility fee we have paid in the Bay Area. Amenities are nice but haven't used them yet due to SIP. Overall, it's meh. Love the neighborhood & location. read more

MacCommons is a poorly run apartment complex. I do not recommend it. They nickel and dime, utilities are unreasonably high, and communications are often ignored. There are surely better run buildings in the area. read more

I called every day of the following week (multiple daily calls during business hours M-F) trying to get a hold of Jessica and received no call back after leaving messages on their voicemail and with other management staff. We're ready to pull the trigger on a unit, but the unresponsiveness is leaving us a bit conflicted. read more

Since I posted the last review, the management has vastly improved. There is much more communication and it is clear, timely, and empathetic to resident needs and concerns. I moved into this community at the end of July 2019. I had originally toured the community earlier and the previous leasing agent who no longer works here had misinformed me on a variety of topics. I was upset and scared to move forward with the move-in however Jessica Martinez took ownership and apologized on behalf of the previous agent. She took the time to explain everything and was patient and understanding. Once our move-in date came Jessica made it a smooth process reassuring us that she would be there every step of the way. She kept her word and now almost 5 months into our time at MacArthur Jessica continues to make us feel at home and is always available to answer any questions. Her leadership qualities and commitment to ensuring we felt comfortable has been unmatched- she's amazing! As we experienced as a community a USPS issue Harold, Jessica, and Amanda really kept the community informed and ensured they made it a priority to get the issue fixed as soon as they could with USPS. The post office was a nightmare to deal with but Amanda and team had empathy towards our frustrations and listened to our concerns. Harold and Jessica have gone above and beyond in taking care of me as a resident and are now more like friends. If you choose to live at MacArthur the convenience, amenities and location is amazing however working with Jessica and Harold has been the best thing about living here. read more

I love my apartment and the few minute walk to Bart couldn't be beat! It's the first reason I looked into the building and am thankful for it on a daily basis. The staff is very friendly- specific shout outs to both Harold and Jessica for being so nice, helpful and accommodating my needs! It's a luxury building in the bay near Bart, bars and restaurants so it's very expensive, but recommend if you're willing to pay for comfort, security and convenience. My real complaint is having to pay for valet trash service...but again I knew that upfront. read more

I do not live here, I read a bunch of mixed reviews, went to look at the building in person and decided to take a gamble. Price was right, so I contacted them to get a virtual or in person tour and hopefully sign a lease. I have now contacted them four or five times, with less than ZERO response. I have gotten better responses from AT&T customer service. Meanwhile, due to the rent going up day after day, I can no longer afford this place. Just think, if they responded to my first or even second inquiry, I could be living there, but due to their lack of caring, I am now looking at other spots because I can no longer afford this place. read more

I lived here for a little over a year. Let me share the pros and cons. The choice is yours but I'd rather live somewhere else. The Pros: * Near Bart station * Harold is nice The Cons: * Extremely HOT during summer. Expect 86+ degrees indoor. There's NO A/C. * Shady area. Homeless people are always at the bus station. * Shared ventilation across units. This means you'll smell pot in your apartment when there's a neighbor smoking but you can't physically do anything. Management will send an apartment-wide email not to do this time to time but that's about it. Also during the wildfires, you'll still smell smoke inside your room even when all the windows are closed because of this. * Extremely small gym compare to the number of apartment units. One squat-rack/bench-press cage. Expect wait time. * Emails that explicitly ask for a reply doesn't reply. Had to call a follow up many times. The leasing manager I was working with went on vacation while I was trying to sign a lease and things were time-sensitive. It was frustrating. * Certain utility bill is shared and there's no way to know why the bill suddenly increases other than the fact that others may use it more. I was one of the few first tenants in building A1, and used to get charged small for water but soon it literally went more than double. * Fees without warning. A warning is really good for customer relationships. It lets customers know that they're violating a certain rule and gives them a heads up because a customer may not know or mistakenly violated it. The management will charge for things like forgetting to renew renter's insurance or leaving the trash can outside without warning. * Trash valet service. You pay for it. In addition, you don't know when they are going to pick it up other than there's a window between something like 6 PM - 12 PM. So, if you happen to leave the trash outside after they've picked up, well, you have to put it back inside and repeat it tomorrow. Also, they don't pick up Monday and Tuesday, and management locks up the basement trash area, so you can't physically dispose of it Monday and Tuesday. * Bathroom water pressure is EXTREMELY low. Hot water temperature isn't really hot. As for the temperature, it actually used to be hot, but after few months they decreased it. (I presume they wanted to save some money by doing this) * $250 parking fee. Believe it or not, I street parked for 13 months. I had to move my car Monday and Tuesday, and time to time, had to park far and walk all the way. Management didn't offer any incentives when most of the parking lot was empty. * There're two elevators but at the near of my term, only one worked. * Parking and Bike rack security isn't that good. There were incidents of broken windows and stolen bikes. read more

On the whole, this is a quality place to live and I'm happy to be here. The location is great. It's right next to BART and close to freeway access. There are lots of excellent restaurants nearby including Julie's, a wood-fired bagel shop across the street, Bird and Buffalo, etc. The staff are friendly and helpful. It's easy to talk to someone; just walk down to the office or send a message on their website. They generally get things done pretty quickly. The complex itself is well constructed and brand new. My experience has been that everything generally works, and if something goes wrong you can get someone to come fix it without much delay. With all that said, there are downsides here like anywhere else. There is no AC. Their system of having us put our trash outside the door for someone to pick up means we have to see and smell a bunch of trash as we walk the halls during trash pickup times. We'd be way better off with trash chutes on each floor. Also, the rent is expensive: I'm paying a total of about $3800 per month for a 1B with parking and utilities. read more

The actual apartment is nice but that's about it as far as positives go. Utilities are insanely expensive. Trash is a whopping $76, pest control is $5, and just to add insult to the injury there's a $5 "service fee" every month. Utilities paid to the building come up to over $150/mo, not including a separate PGE bill for electricity, and this is all without the amenities. Just wait until the pool reopens after COVID, and all the tenants will be chipping in to heat that fancy pool too. Management is definitely the worst part about living here though. We had issues with the office before we even signed the lease. We agreed on a concession in person with one of the leasing agents, but when we got the lease to sign, it wasn't what we agreed on. Okay, people make mistakes, no big deal. We let them know and they apologized, saying they would fix it right away. They send us a new lease, and the number is still off by over a thousand. It took a third try to get it right. Seriously? We wrote the correct number very clearly in an email. How do you get that wrong? I still don't know if this happened because they are just utterly incompetent or if they were trying to squeeze us for more $$$ without us knowing, but either way it's not a good look. We should have taken this as a warning sign, but we stupidly signed the lease thinking this would be the last time we'd have to deal with the office for a while. COVID-19 hit shortly afterwards, and we were stuck paying an insane amount in rent while having no access to amenities. We emailed asking them to reduce our rent, no response. Fast forward a couple months, and rental rates all over the Bay have plummeted. We decide to contact them again about renegotiation and were met with the standard "I have to go through the proper channels" response from Amanda, the property manager. She promises to contact us by Friday. We email and call throughout the week trying to get a response sooner, because every day costs us $100+. Surprise, surprise! She's out of the office or busy every time. Come EOD Friday, and we still have no response, so we send our 30-day notice. Then, of course they come running to us to negotiate, and a leasing agent tells us she'll get back to us by the next day with offers. We call the next day only to find out that she's out of the office for the next two days. Amanda is in the office but is busy and can't talk. I expected no less. Basically we've had it with these people. We understand that they have no obligation to renegotiate because we signed the lease, but ultimately it's their loss. We see people moving out every week, and if you look on their site, you'll see that they have available units up the wall. You'd think they'd try harder to keep the tenants they do have. If you're thinking about moving in while the rent is "cheap" (still more expensive that other nice apartments in Oakland), good for you but don't be surprised when they hit you with that good old market rate when your lease is up. And god help you if you ever need to negotiate with these people. read more

I took a tour of the new MacArthur Commons community in the Temescal neighborhood. In addition to the well appointed units, fantastic amenities to come (including a pool!), I had the pleasure of being guided on the tour by Harold Gayden, Leasing Professional. Not only was Harold delightful, he took an abundant amount of time to show me various units, prospectus(es), and educated me on the neighborhood; after which I dropped into Beauty's Bagels right across the street, on his recommendation. BART is steps away, and a mere 15-20 min train ride to SF Fin'l Dist. I visited several other places since, none of which tic all the boxes like MacArthur Commons! I'm glad I decided to go with this development, all the units are new they have a nice gym and pool area. I love that this place has a close proximity to the BART station. We don't have a car so it makes it easier to be mobile. Tashayla assisted us with our move she was great! She explained in detail all about the development and all the new features to come. If you have any questions, she tried to make you feel at home and make the move in process as seamless as possible. Also like to say head maintenance was pretty nice about helping to assist with moving in as well. I've never left a Yelp review because I've never had a sufficiently bad experience that I felt it necessary to share, but MacArthur Common's 4.5 star rating is entirely unmerited and I want to share the difference in experience during the application process vs. living here. First, to echo other reviewer's comments: 1. It's extremely hot in the room. The temperature inside the apartment stagnates at around 78 degrees all day, regardless of the thermostat or the outside temperature. If you move here, make sure you have a fan for every room. 2. There are ZERO amenities during Covid-19 -- reasonable, except that rent stays the same. You're paying a premium for an average product as long as amenities are closed. 3. Whatever base monthly rent you're seeing while applying, add $260 to include the outrageously expensive parking ($225) (NO assigned parking spaces) and valet trash service ($35, can't opt out). Also, the only AT&T internet package that's available here is their 1T plan, which is extremely expensive and typically gets speeds around 300 mbps. 4. The mail room is NOT SECURE. We have mailboxes and lockers for packages, but more often than not, packages are just left sitting on top of lockers or on the floor with no regard for security. This is absolutely ridiculous considering you are required to pay for the privilege of having secure lockers. Now for my unique experience with the leasing office: Everyone in the leasing office is extremely polite. During the application process, they were more than accommodating and extremely accessible. I want to emphasize that BEFORE moving in, I was incredibly happy with the leasing office and was on my way to leaving a 5-star review. After moving in, the leasing office is still great to work with -- as long as you don't have any billing issues. When trying to resolve illegitimate charges with the leasing office, I had the following issues: 1. Suddenly, response time was incredibly delayed. I would go for 4+ business days without a reply, then only receive a reply after bumping my email a few times. 2. Different people would try to "help" resolve the issue, and it seemed that none of them had any knowledge of the issue beforehand. Thus, I had to re-explain the issue multiple times. This also means that documents, screenshots, emails, etc. are all re-forwarded to the same MacArthur Commons leasing email so a new member of the leasing office could see what the problem is. As of today, the issue has not been resolved after several weeks of correspondence. 3. When I went to speak with the leasing office in person, I was blamed for their error, despite having email receipts to prove that the illegitimate charges were the fault of the leasing office. Furthermore, I was promised an email response within 30 minutes after speaking with them in person -- it has been 5 days so far with no response. Unfortunately, I signed a one-year lease agreement after seeing such positive feedback about MacArthur Commons on Yelp and experiencing how polite the leasing office was. I've been living at MacArthur Commons since January with my girlfriend and the leasing professionals made our move in so easy and have been so good at answering all our questions and making us feel comfortable. I wanted to make a special mention for Jessica Martinez who immediately met us with a friendly face when we first moved in. Jessica has been such a great resource for us and feels like a friend whenever we see her around the apartment complex, asking us how our day is going and leaving us with smiles on our faces. We are looking to move to a new location (a house for more space) and Jessica has been nothing but gracious and understanding in helping us do what we need before our move out date. I've just moved in for a week! The experience has been great! Tashayla has assisted us professionally from viewing the units to making sure everything is setup correctly before moving in to troubleshooting problems after we've moved in. The apartment is also really sweet. The gym is huge and the jacuzzi is great! So far we have a really positive experience at MacArthur commons. The development is modern and beautiful with amenities galore, and all of them thus far are well kept and maintained. My apartment is a spacious and bright 1bedroom. The only down sides are guest parking, Early morning construction noise, and the high rent (though consistent with the dozen or so new developments all over the bay). What won me over was the exuberant staff and the lengths of their great service. making sure my move-in went smoothly. My Leasing Specialist was Tashayla and she had great energy, and always made sure to check in with me, making sure that all of my needs were met. I visited the property. The prices are very high for the region and the neighborhood and the developer and the property management company are trying to keep them as high as possible by giving the justification that only people with money from SF are moving here. In other words non-locals. The trash collection is ridiculous, they expect you to pay $35 for the valet service and you have specific hours to leave your trash in the hallway. They told me that they're planning to fill their vacancies by late January. Despite that, they aren't lowering their rental quotes. So their aim is not renting at the market rate, but through colluding with other properties and pushing and keeping prices high. read more
