I really enjoy this place and can't say that I've ever had a poor experience. The service and food are consistently good, which is more than I can say for a lot of other businesses in town and I've never been disappointed on these counts. I always try to order something that I would never cook at home and I've been very happy with my choices. The osso bucco is quite tasty as it literally falls off the bone and melts in your mouth. I've also been happy with a perfectly cooked tuna steak and so many other tasty entrees I can't even really remember. They have an extensive wine list and the bartenders to back it up. If you're unsure about whether or not you'd like something, ask before you order. They know their list well and will be able to help you make a selection. This is probably my go-to restaurant when looking for a nicer evening out. read more

one of my favorite places to eat. I enjoy several of the menu items. recently, I've been ordering the tenderloin salad & it is delicious. I add feta & it is my favorite salad in town, for sure. the green chile farfalle is very good {I order with blackened chicken} & the millionaire tacos are always a win. After having been in Amarillo for 2 months, this place has the best food I've had. It is the closest thing to fine dining available in this area. The service was great, although I would recommend brushing up on the pronunciation of dish names. The mob queso really is delicious along with the ciopino. If I ever have the misfortune of returning to Texas, I will definitely be eating here again. read more

I chose to host my birthday party back home at Macaroni Joe's because it was a higher end option for food I knew I would like. I arrived a little late to the restaurant and my friends already had the queso and chips flowing. I wish I didn't have the palate of a 5 year old, but I just do, and the spinach looking green things floating in the queso bowl were enough to scare me away from trying it. Another appetizer ordered was the calamari. It was beautifully presented, but was served with a raspberry type vinaigrette, that didn't really suit the flavor of the dish. On to the entree's. I selected the chef's special, which was filet with lobster baked inside, a parmesan risotto, and side of asparagus. At $32.00 a plate?! No problem for my birthday dish! However, the filet was dry, I couldn't find the lobster on my plate anywhere (and I also enlisted help from my friend next to me, she couldn't find it either). It was just okay. The other plates induced giggles at the amount of chicken and sides presented on the plate. I get that gourmet/ hand made foods are often served in small portions, but GET REAL, this is AMARILLO! Who do they think they are cooking for? Again, want to re-iterate that this is AMARILLO, not LA :) I happened to be a little tipsy by the end of the meal so the speed of service didn't bother me as much as it did my more sober friends. I wasn't sure if not being available for your guest's needs was a part of the deal at a higher end restaurant, but it was impossible to flag down a server when we needed one. He forgot a couple of things, no worries, but we tried for 30-40 minutes to get our checks. You think 30-40 minutes must be a huge exaggeration, so let me be conservative. Conservatively, it took us 30 mintues to get our checks and pay out. I would come here again for the ambiance, and okayyyy food, but I definitely wouldn't make plans around dining here, and wouldn't try to do so on a night where I was staying sober. read more

Quaint little place for both lunch and dinner - and their tables always have crisp white table cloths (nice touch). This was actually the first restaurant I had dinner at in Amarillo over 10 years ago. Nice to know that it's still a fun establishment where the servers add to the pleasant experience. I had the grilled salmon but others in my party tried the unique Italian-Mexican dishes like chicken farfalle in green salsa which was actually very tasty. Check MJ out and relax. read more

We went for a late lunch on a Monday. The place was pretty empty, but you would have thought it was a Saturday night during peak hours. The food was decent, but the service was slooooow and terrible. Disappointed!!! I almost walked out! I heard this was a nice place with the best food. Getting in I felt it could be more clean. Visually you see wores, nails hanging out of the wall, our tablecloth stained with sauce and other stains. Our server took a while to greet us. We ordered the mob queso, as he is telling us what not to do as far as eating it, the top pepper popped a flew on my husband while on fire. Personally, I love cheese but I ate a few bites and I just could not enjoy it. I cant pin point why, other than I just did not like it. We order. Me the trout and my husband the steak Diana medallions. Apparently the server came back after 10 minutes and asked what I ordered. Since he did not write it down, he forgot and the chef cooked something else. So 15 minutes later the server comes back and says the chef can not get my fish right. Comes back 5-10 minutes later saying they fish is frozen and can't get it to a servable temperature. It was 45 minutes and just about to walk out when the food arrives. My husband liked his food. My trout was okay but dry. (aspen creek grill's was way better) and the risotto was also dry! I can not say anything good, I will not return and suggest you to try somewhere else too. Came for dinner with a party of 8. The ambience is beautiful, the waitresses was personable and attentive, and the food was amazing. I had a lovely glass of Zinfandel. We tried the Mob Queso and fried green tomatoes for appetizers. Both were delicious. The prime rib and duck were particularly delicious. I loved the jalapeño cheese grits and the hazelnut creme brûlée was a delight. The cocktail menu looked fantastic and I will start my meal with the Kennedy Mule the next time I come. Absolute garbage, you're paying for the environment, and not the food. I ordered a gyro, and on the menu was it was written as a new york style gyro. I thought it would be a lot of baby lamb meat, but what I got was extremely salted steak chopped up into peas size bites in the amount of 15grams. There one waiter, kept clacking his pen while he was taking my families orders like he had better things to do. There were on 2 other tables with no more than two. I was two seconds away from slapping the impatience out of him and walking out. If you doubt this comment, have fun going there to be ripped off by bad quality food. If this business is any worse from here on, they will go out of business. read more

This place was AMAZING! The Asiago Chicken Farfalle is now one of my all time favorite meals from any restaurant ever! It was PERFECT!!!!! The waiter was so nice and offered great recommendations! Their bread that comes automatically is good too. The Prime Rib was excellent! And that loaded baked potato, should be the standard for all baked potatoes! Macaroni Joe's has consistently been the best local restaurant in Amarillo now for years. There were a couple of times the consistency lacked; I think there was an ownership change and some chef changes. But overall, this place has always been a winner. Bar none, the best wine list in the city at over 200. It's dark and romantic here and you can basically choose your setting: Bistro up front, outdoor patio feel with white lights in the middle room, and really-really dark and ideal for a little PDA in the back room. The menu is diverse but cohesive, tending toward a southwestern take on italian. I like this because the chefs aren't pretending to be something they aren't. Mob Queso is still the best appetizer in the city and watch out for the decadent desserts. read more

Me and my wife went here last week for date night and I have to be honest I was impressed. Very nice resturant for a date. We ordered the Blue Crab stuffed Shrimp as a Starter, it was okay, nothing to write home about. I wish we would have gotten the Mob Queso because that seems like what everybody in the resturant was ordering. The bread is pretty good and the wine was also good. I ordered the Blackened Bayou Pasta and it was really good if you like spicy food. My wife ordered the Chicken Spaghetti and i have to admit it was the best pasta I have eaten in a while. My first time here went from bad to great within a matter of 30 minutes or so. We were seated on the patio and our server forgot about us so after being re-seated inside the hostess, manager and our waiter all told us separately how sorry they were about this mix up. The service was excellent after that. Allen was our waiter and said he would "be our verbal menu for the night" he picked our wine (pino noir, marvelous) poured heavy and timed our appetizer and meals to come out perfectly. The night ended with bread pudding (server's choice which I was afraid of) but it was delicious. I ate more than my stomach wanted me to eat. It's a pretty expensive place but the service after our mix up was so nice. It's a treat for sure. read more

MJ's is really good. The food is definitely not traditional Italian by any means. Its really got a lot of mexican influence. Its really more of a date place because its dark and has candles on the tables, ect. The wine list is also solid. Overall, I'd say that its good food but its really more for an event rather just a good meal out. read more

I keep hoping for a top-tier restaurant in Amarillo, but it hasn't happened yet. I give Mac Joes credit for trying hard, but they haven't quite pulled it off, as of Feb 09. The interior is charming and the staff runs hard, but that doesn't make up for serving warm wine and average food. I can overlook the tough shrimp, because Amarillo is a long way from the ocean, but the steak ought to be Prime, and I would bet the price of my ticket that its only Choice. This is, after all, the heart of beef country - if you can't serve a really excellent steak, you don't have much to fall back on. read more

We ate there this evening, over from NM for doctor appointments. The décor is nice but we did not like the food. Our waiter was nice. I guess they think this place is classy because they serve wine. Before I went I looked up the online menu & decided on the halibut. When we ordered it wasn't on the menu. "They were out". I ordered something else that was sub par. Decided to order a bottle of wine, they didn't have three bottles I selected. If you are going to spend 100$ or more don't go here. Go to OHMS Cafe downtown much better food. First time coming here as a Californian. It wasn't that great for me. All I ordered was the mob queso and they had a nice presentation since it lit it on fire with ever clear. The only downside was that now it tasted like ever clear and super gross. Would not come back. The only good thing is that the atmosphere was very romantic with a cute Italian vibe. read more

After eating here a few times I can say this is a very welcomed alternative when you are in the mood for a finer dining experience in Amarillo. Parking is ample but is common to several eateries and may take awhile to get a spit sometimes. Reservations are not needed but recommend as this place gets full. The ambiance and decor are really pleasing and feel upscale-like dining along a generic European street cafe. Service for me has always been top notch, and the wine offerings are without match in terms of choice and quality anywhere I've been in the area. Overall, the food is good, not great but good. It consists of an eclectic combination of several Italian regions with other Mediterranean flavors tempered for the American palate. Anyway you won't go wrong here, is a great place for a romantic or upscale dining experience in town. read more

The theatrical Italian villa atmosphere is fun (though dimly lit), the staff is always attentive and friendly, the wine steward introduced us to our favorite wine of all time, the menu is imaginative (in a town full of steak houses, menus get monotonous), and the food is always delicious. read more

I've been twice recently and have enjoyed the food too much! It is a special place to have lunch or dinner, with a quiet and beautiful atmosphere. We went here the weekend before Valentines Day and had the Valentines "special". We went with another couple and we loved the atmosphere but the food was mediocre. I ordered the flounder, that was not at all seasoned and the mushroom appetizer was cold. The special was $40 a person, so yes, I was expecting a little more. I did like the chicken dish that my cousin ordered, however, it was definitely not worth $40. My husband spoke up and said that my fish had no flavor and the waitress asked me if I wanted to have something else to go, which I agreed to. I told her I'd have chicken dish that my cousin ordered, but when I got home, 50 miles away, it was a pasta dish. ?? Since we've only been there once, I can't say I won't go back- but if I do, I'll just have a glass of wine and maybe a dessert and enjoy the atmosphere. read more

Just okay. I don't get all the higher ratings. But, if you've been to a Macaroni Grill Restaurant, this is a slightly less nice, but more expensive, and equally noisy, version of that. A better date night, to me, is The Embers. But, they do have private rooms, which can help with the noise. But, you lose any romance, because they are set up more like conference rooms. I had the beef salad, which was okay. The spicy cucumber dressing was good. But, the beef was so small it was hard to locate in the salad. Guess you can't please everyone, and I appear to be in the minority on this one. It felt a little touristy to me. read more
