    a moldy ceiling

Mabel's on Roncesvalles is one the most vile and unprofessional workplaces out there- by a disgruntled ex-employee. In my short stint working at Fresh City Farms' Mabel's on Roncesvalles not too long ago I had witnessed some of the worst business practices imaginable. To begin I will address their primary business: food/ beverages! If you think that it was the beef empanada that possibly gave you diarrhea, I can confirm it probably was. The "hot food" is shipped frozen to the store, where it gets baked by an individual who probably does not have a food handlers certificate (only one person did while I worked there, not me lol) and then stuck in the fridge uncovered for up to 5 days (no meat thermometer in sight!). Have you ever had a desert square from inside the fridge that seems a little dry, or a nasty looking pie? Well the same goes for those, and all those "fresh cookies" Most are uncovered, for 5 days. Do you think the bread display is pretty? rustic? charming? Keep in mind that bread is shipped to the bakery in the morning uncovered, sits sometimes directly on the floor and then in the half hour staff has to open the store, gets tossed on the shelf (I saw my manager doing it bare handed). Is that worth the $8.50? Maybe the insane price, and nasty look of the food has already deterred you from buying and good for you, but Mabel's also has coffee! Well too bad for Roncy because the lack of training on the espresso machines means that your barista is likely making it up as they go along! Who cares though coffee is coffee! Not when cleaning practices are not taught to employees. The espresso cups are perpetually caked in old milk which can surprisingly cause botulism!! Don't need steamed milk? Do you like it iced? That'll come with a side of mold. And my personal favourite health and safety issue, badadada the roaches!! In my time working here the entire store was infested! I have seen roaches crawl on breakfast pastries and still be served, I have seen them fall on people's heads, a coworker drank a roach in water and they even hitched a ride home with me in my shoes. Also have you ever walked by Mabels and saw a little someone scurrying around? Of course you have! The mice are a vital part of the Mabel's experience. Who knew that leaving food uncovered for 12 hours a day in a 100 year old building would attract pests? Welp at least it's cute. And don't think the disgusting, lazy practices are all Fresh City's fault. The previous owner knowingly did not can the jarred soups properly resulting in ... you guessed it, botulism! If the food horrors aren't enough to convince you that this place is the most unprofessional work setting in the city, let me detail some issues with management. First, the training at this establishment is gut wrenchingly terrible. When you're hired you get thrown on the floor usually due to understaffing, and when you are faced with something you don't know how to do, you are greeted with a groan from your manager when you ASK to be trained, alluring right? I even had to write out my own instructions on how to operate machines because there was nothing written down. All this later made a lot of sense when I realized management could not train because they could not be bothered to learn themselves. Ugh imagine a corporate employee knowing how to make a cappuccino or check out a customer, how embarrassing! To continue, certain members of management display a let's say.... lack of professional boundaries. Inappropriately complimenting, touching, and asking out barely legal employee's all happened between those vomit yellow walls. Lastly, just plain bad management. My manager could not even manage a lemonade stand let alone a store. If they weren't late, and blaming others for not working fast enough, they just did not show up leaving underpaid individuals to take care of managerial tasks ALL day. They even went to a nearby bar halfway through their shift to calm their nerves once. And their constant aggression, bluntness and lack of self awareness created a work environment so hostile, I was physically unable to move in anticipation for my shifts with them, out of fear of what might happen. In short, I'm truly sorry to myself for giving Mabel's my hard work, it was not worth the minimum wage, and the tips customers complained about giving. I will post this under a fake email which might look fishy if you're concerned about my credentials, so don't trust me, trust my photos. ;)

Another cute rustic spot on Roncy! Mabel's bakery is a quaint bakery take out spot that really serves its community. In here you'll maybe people lined up to grab their breakfast goods or sitting down chatting about their dogs or local school. The service here is fast as there's at least 4 or 5 people behind the counters. The counters are filled with TONS of baked goods... if anything, I'd say its overflowing. You'll find country style breads, to cookies, to bars, to savoury salads, and pot pies. It seems their croissant is a big seller as I saw nearly everyone ask for one to go. I was surprised to see peanut butter being used here... I love a good nutty note but I know that with recent pushback from allergies, this has mostly disappeared from the bakery shelves. Not here! Toffee Tart - Akin to the Canadian beloved butter tart, this one does well with its lightly flakey and crumbly tart shell. It has a nice taste of butter as well. The filling was a bit runny but has a lovely caramel brown sugar flavour to it. I love it when the filling overflows and starts to get more of that caramelized crispy edge to it and this one had a good amount. 4/5 Chocolate Croissant - Beautiful looking darker golden crust ... I loved how the layers displayed themselves. I did ask for the darkest one as most of them were on the paler side in the store. As for the taste and texture, I wasn't sure if it was held long but it was quite soft... spongey soft unfortunately. And I would say the chocolate was good but not great... it felt like it was a bit waxy and not much butter to the dough. It is a gorgeous looking croissant but something taste wise was off. 3/5 Overall cute spot that has a lot of variety and with quick service, I think most people could enjoy something from the bakery shelves here.

I googled for some bakeries and Mabel's was mentioned a few times so I decided to give it a try, then another...and another...... -drools-....... SO ANYWAY, I tried 3 things from here: 1. O r a n g e B l o n d i e (Tangy orange cream cheese layered on top of a very dense and chewy brownie, best texture ever, and dipped in a sticky orange glaze) 2. C o n g o B a r (Coconutty goodness right here. Again, the texture was good, but not as good as the Blondie, it had coconut shavings on atop and inside. Would go great with a cup of coffee) 3. T r i p l e C h o c o l a t e F u d g e B a r (This thing is BIG. BAD. & BITCHIN' with chocolate.... the top layer is a smoothe and creamy layer of fudge-like icing and on the bottom is 2 thick layers of brownie goodness. Pretty darn rich, so you should definately grab a drink with this and it can get messy) They also have a really good selection of savoury foods. (Quiche, GIANT meatballs (B-cup size), salads etc.) All of which look delicious and at a reasonable price too! This place is gold. God, I saw a carrot cake bar, which I (will, must, going to) try next time. It's a far trip for me, but well worth it and not like the other bakeries this place closes late at around 7pm or 8pm! Sigh Verdict: -Jumps up with pearly white smile and 2 thumbs up- Ya yo.

Oh so innocently walking was I, when out of the corner of my eye I saw them, the little cakes of gluttony, scrumptious cupcakes lined up on a plate. "I must have one," I thought, and went immediately inside and purchased one. A vanilla bean cupcake with vanilla butter cream icing. I knew I would enjoy it before I even took my first bite because the icing was equal in depth to the actual cake! Plus it's butter cream, which as sweet-toothers know gets this sort of distinct crunchy coating on it and then WHOOOOSH! Pure. Creamy. Sweetness. This was the case... and yet, mine is a tragic tale. I bought it, starting walking and ate it on my way to catch the streetcar. It was too rushed! Three bites and it was gone! And as soon as that last sweet cakey ball of precious dessert was past the taste threshold and on its way down my esophagus I sighed, long and loud so that the others on the streetcar sort of looked at me strangely, because I knew it would be a while before I could have access to another.

I only buy bread there and it's very good, sour dough, all organic, just the way bread should be.

Love their bread, not their slicer. Some slices 1/4" thick, some 1" thick. Not very good for making sandwiches.

Fresh, varied, and generally a couple of grades higher than you'll find elsewhere they manage to keep an excellent selection and fantastic pricing due to the solid base of their Portuguese customers and growing traffic from neighborhood newcomers. So why does a local market get a 5 star review? Aside from the lack of gouging, Do Rego has long standing relationships with local farmers. So starting every Spring season, they end up with some of the best examples of truly local produce without screaming about it's provenance and jacking up the price 200%. When walking down Bloor St. with a couple of bunches of the local fresh green onions (which easily exceed .5 meters in length!) I've actually been stopped and asked where I got them. FYI they were a whopping 50 cents for a big fat bunch. The other item of special note are the cheeses from the Azores. Many places in Toronto carry the Quebec-made equivalents which are tasty, but ain't nothing like the real thing. Do Rego always has the real stuff and they will happily slice you a taste - try and NOT buy some - I dare you. Ultimately, Do Rego has redefined my relationship with the local grocer. Most of my experiences with corner market have been borne of convenience tempered with predatory pricing. Do Rego calls to mind the "grocer" of yore. The one my parents told me about, the archetype from old tv and films, the one I never expected to personally experience. So perhaps the 5 stars are mostly for reminding of the way things should be...

Try some of the cheese they keep behind the counter, they will let you sample it first. Only reason for a 4 vs a 5 star rating is that they don't really carry anything organic.
