It was my birthday, and we thought it would be a wonderful evening to have dinner with family. Unfortunately, the experience was extremely disappointing. We had a reservation for five people at 6:30 PM on September 17. When we arrived, we were asked to move several times to accommodate larger groups that were expected to arrive. We didn't mind and tried to be understanding. However, we were there before the other large parties, yet somehow our appetizers came out slow. When they finally arrived, they were cold. Some appetizers we didn't even order were brought to our table. Our main course was then brought out last, after the larger groups had already received their food, and it was cold as well. There were two servers and two food runners, so it was difficult to understand how the service became so disorganized (need more staff.) We watched other parties who arrived 30-40 minutes after us receive their food before we did. What made the evening worthwhile was simply being able to spend quality time with our family and celebrate my birthday together. Otherwise, the experience would have been a complete disappointment. I also noticed that one of the larger groups of ladies didn't appear to stay for their main courses. They simply asked for the check and left. Unfortunately, based on this experience, I don't plan on returning. Also, the menu doesn't match the website. read more

I ditched my diet today and went down memory lane with good old Cajun food in New Roads/False River. The Oysters Orleans and turtle soup were delicious. I finished it off with the homemade key-lime pie and a wonderful cup of coffee. There is nothing like roots and comfort food to help one heal. read more

As a native New Orleanian, I am familiar with delicious meals in quality restaurants. In my humble opinion, the quality of a restaurant is not only in terms of the taste of the food, but the way customers are treated. Mama should be removed from the name of this establishment, because when I think of the words, "Mama and Kitchen" I think of warmth and smiles. The total opposite is what comes from this, "Kitchen". I do not mind paying $13.00 for a good slice of cake, but the one I ordered was extremely dense and heavy enough to be a blueberry lemon door stop. The waiters and waitresses are nice, but the owner/cook and cooks do not have pleasant personalities. This is not Galatoire's or Antoine's, but they think they are. Food cooked with a smile and love taste far better than a meal from a kitchen where mean and frowning are the main ingredients. read more

Look, they have this place out in California called The Madonna Inn - look it up. It's famous for its desserts, especially all the cakes. We bought all the flavors at that hotel. Expensive as can be. Tried all their fancy cakes. Not 1. Not a single slice of ANY of their famous cakes even slightly compares to the cakes at My Mama's. When I go to New Roads I get me some CAKE!!!! It could be a simple coconut or the almond. Nothing all fancy. It is hands down a winner! I dream of the cake there. It isn't super cheap - but you get a super fat slice. Can't wait for another. Hoping for some holiday flavors, but seriously- don't get all complicated- like they do out here in Ca. No point in it when you end up sacrificing that home baked feel and flavor. Can't wait for cake! read more

The bread is worth stopping for lunch. Albeit a tad pricey the food is awesome, just don't be in a hurry. 40 minutes later our food came. Service could be more attentive. Waiter asked if I would like ketchup, I answered yes, he never brought it, or could I get his attention to bring it. However next time in town, and it's lunch, we will return. read more

My good friends David Barnhart and Sharon Turnipseed joined me for lunch at a very special place in New Roads, LA, Ma Mama's Kitchen. Their specialty is their breads They are all baked fresh in house. To put it lightly, this was the best Shrimp PoBoy I've ever had, and the fries were as good as you will get! Every now and then you find a place where everything you try is HOLY S*** good. Ma Mama's Kitchen is such a place. Tucked away on the tiny downtown strip of New Roads, LA (on Main St. of course) facing the shore of False River, which is actually a lake that used to be a part of the nearby Mississippi, Ma Mama's Kitchen seemed to serve a boisterous local clientele on the Friday night we visited. We had reached our rental property late and friends had already eaten. So, we Yelped our way here and relished in the greatness. We started with an in-house brioche with a mediterranean dipping oil. My +1 said it was "the best bread I've ever had". It's hard to argue. It was like carb-crack. I had the Crab & Corn Bisque and she the Gumbo. Both were mouth-wateringly amazing. She also tried a Blueberry Martini which was beautifully balanced for a sweet drink. The atmosphere had everything you want from this retro-hip, upcycled south part of the state. It was an old house with creepy old painting and lots of wood. Service was strong and personably. False River draws lots of vacationers, so the staff was very comfortable interacting with us as newcomers. Probably didn't hurt that we were so blown away by the food. I don't know that we'll ever be back in this little town. But, this place is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. read more

Poboy bread incredible. Best shrimp poboy we have EVER eaten!!! And we've eaten a lot of them!! We had to ask the chef why the fries were so different from any we've ever had, they were so yummy, we're going to try it at home, and keep their secret. The turtle cheesecake was INSANELY delicious and hard to decide which dessert to get! Quaint upscale ambience with midscale prices. Our server, Justin was very attentive and helpful with choices. 5 star in every aspect! read more

What a lovely historical place! And the food is amazing! So good, in fact we ate there two days in row!! The bread! Both days, different servers, were attentive, busy and GREAT! This is our new favorite place! read more

It had been a while since we've been to Ma Mamas and we've always had a great experience so the bar was high. I would consider it fine dining so you know that means it ain't cheap. The interior of the restaurant has pretty much been the same as long as I can remember, with kind of rustic, country, yet "Big Easy" style. The service was fine--no real complaints. The food is what really brings things down, and sadly, the food has always been on point, prior to today. The best things we had were the seafood and artichoke dip and the seafood au gratin. The crawfish balls had hardly any crawfish in them (mostly stuffing/breading) and the complimentary house-made bread was really dense and bland. My husband had the veal and it was overcooked and tough. Someone at our table got the shrimp scampi which she compared to more of a shrimp stew. For the $200+ price tag, we left feeling disappointed. I hope it was just an "off" night. read more

This time was immensely better than the first time I'd been. The server was super sweet and attentive. She made sure our drinks were topped off and that our every need was met the entire time. The dining room was quiet albeit during the middle of a weekday. Nights can be a bit more clamorous but still nothing unbearable. So for starters, the Mama's Bread--just get it. I had the corn and crab bisque which was excellent. My mom and dad each had a cup of seafood gumbo (not pictured) which they said was very good. They split a shrimp poboy and took the rest home. I had the breaded eggplant Bayou Teche which may be the best thing I've ever had in Louisiana. Too stuffed from lunch, we got a slice of cheesecake with the strawberry compote and a piece of their white chocolate blueberry bread pudding (which is to die for) to go. If you're ever in New Roads or on the False River, be sure to stop in for a nice meal at this gem. read more

This is a nice place, nicer than I was dressed for, but the service was good. We were the only ones there right at 11. They brought out their signature bread and man, it's good. Very hearty. (However my grandmother is sure her homemade yeast bread is better.) I tried it with the Mediterranean dip but I am so used to the za'atar from our local place that this was nothing in comparison. Stick to the bread and butter. We ordered fried shrimp/catfish, and catfish filets over crawfish ettoufee. The ettoufee was so good! The green beans had salsa poured over them and that wasn't to my taste but my Mawmaw liked them a lot. The lunch's version of shrimp/catfish combo only has 3 shrimp. That's a little lame. But the catfish and the fries were very good. When people started coming in they sat us all at a distance from each other. And the employees are masked. read more

Ma Mama's is a gem of a family restaurant. The atmosphere is inviting, the service is friendly and attentive, and the food is out of this world. Our appetizers included the crawfish balls with homemade pepper jelly, stuffed mushrooms, and the roasted cauliflower. Let's not forget the mounds of delicious bread and dipping sauce. Our table of 7 tried a variety of entrees. My fish was perfect as was the pork shank. Desserts are a must here - Ms. Kim is a phenomenal baker. Best key lime pie ever. I stopped in for a couple of midday appetizers. New Roads is one of the most charming towns in Louisiana, and Ma Mama's exudes it's own river country charm. I ordered the oyster combo and a bowl of turtle soup. The combo was spectacular; 3 oysters "Orleans" and 3 oysters "Rockefeller. I would definitely order this item again; it was rich and savory. That being said, the turtle soup falls far short of the mark. In my opinion, the best turtle soup is served at Mandina's in New Orleans. It's rich tomato-ey goodness, topped off with a drizzle of sherry, is blended so that you taste all of the savory ingredients. Unfortunately, the turtle soup at Ma Mama's was heavily overloaded with Worcestershire sauce, so it tastes like you're eating---Worcestershire Sauce soup. I wouldn't pass up a chance to eat there again, but I would not order turtle soup there. read more

I recently (10/20/2016) took a day trip to Point Coupee Parish with my dad to find the childhood property where my paternal grandfather was raised from 1915-1927; a property that is still owned by my family. We needed directions to the undeveloped property (undeveloped since the Great Flood of 1927) and stopped by the Point Coupee Parish Assessor's Office and spoke to employee Austin Jewell (Deputy- Parcel Data and GIS) in the mapping room. It was a little after 1:15 PM and we were hungry, so I Yelped out local restaurants and Ma Mama's Kitchen was at the top of the list. Furthermore, the pictures of the food looked absolutely amazing. Mr. Jewell was unfamiliar with Yelp, but confirmed that the restaurant was a top pick in the region. And fortunately for us, it was less than 500 feet from where we stood inside of the assessor's office. The restaurant is located on the 1st floor of a rustic 2 story stucco building on W. Main Street in downtown New Roads directly across the street from the False River. We walked in at 1:34 PM and were greeted by our server, Dawn. I noticed that they closed at 2:00 PM, so I politely apologized for walking in 30 minutes before closing, but she stated that we had plenty of time to eat. Dawn rattled off the daily specials and my dad and I decided to each try one; him opting for the shrimp and grits and me opting for the grits and grillades. She quickly brought out our drinks and an order of the best tasting and freshest hot bread I have ever eaten. While we enjoyed our bread and cooled down with our iced teas, we took in the ambiance of the restaurant. There are stained glass windows and stained glass lights overhead. The interior is rustic, and in a very classy way; and there is wood (probably cypress) everywhere. Seating is probably limited to 50 people but that's more than enough. There is a cool full sized bar just off the entrance and a huge dessert case just off the bar. But enough about the décor, as Ma Mama's Kitchen is all about the food. Kudos to my dad for letting me sample his shrimp and grits for reviewing purposes. The grits are as good as you'll get anywhere. They dominate the center of the dish and are topped with 2 large grilled shrimp and a blend of shredded cheeses. The grits are surrounded by a literal moat of sautéed shrimp in a savory sauce that begs you to ask for extra bread so that you can "sop" of every drop of juice. The grits and grillades were also a winner. Like the shrimp and grits, the grits dominate the center of the dish. They are surrounded by a moat of tender beef medallions in a savory gravy that you'd be a fool if you didn't "sop" of every drop of juice with some extra bread. Unfortunately, we were too full for dessert. However, next time (and there WILL be a next time) I'm saving room for a slice of hummingbird cake. Word to the wise, this slice of cake looks big enough to feed 3 people, as I have never seen a slice of cake this big since I first saw the mile high pie at Copeland's. I literally stared in awe at a couple that was unsuccessfully trying to tackle this "10th wonder of the world". After reading the menu and looking at all the Yelp food pics, I quickly deduced that I want to eat here many more times to try some of the incredible menu offerings. This is a true gem of a restaurant and worthy of a 1.5 - 2 hour road trip to get here. The food and service are so good that Ma Mam's Kitchen would be an instant success in any location; including the restaurant saturated city of New Orleans. However, I think they are exactly where they need to be! read more

This is a place I patronize weekly sometimes 2-3 times a week! So tonight I wanted to go dine in. When I tell you nothing tasted right; ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! I get the seafood pasta extra bacon and sauce no matter what. My husband insisted I try the corn and crab bisque. After not getting it in a timely manner, my husband asked about it. He also explained we do not want everything coming out at the same time! We can hear the workers say they forgot about it. So they bring it out. It's lukewarm. Asked them to warm it up. Once warmed, Jenny I think her name is with the very messed up attitude, says idk what to do with it, they don't want everything at the same time. I didn't like the bisque, my husband ate it. The food is brought out. The pasta was NOT good! I told the waitress and she was VERY nonchalant. I can hear them talking about me in the back. The professionalism of these people. I asked for a box but decided not to take it home, it was just that bad. The pasta was mushy. My husband's shrimp weren't like he had them last week. Very dry. I asked when will the owner be back. She didn't know. If I was bad or subpar service, I would have gone to McDonald's. I wanted address them about all the chatter but my husband insisted we leave. They have lost a very good customer! Because all the waitress could say is mine was good. It wasn't busy or anything. $85 for an unsatisfactory meal and the staff talking about me. My husband asked me to leave because I wanted to address them but he didn't want any trouble. read more

Inattative and borderline rude service, average food, and drinks that lack imagination and complexity. I did not expect such experience from the town's main fine dining dinner destination. Our server Jenny was the star of our dining experience, but not in a good way. She was apathetic for engagement, inattentive, and neglectful of even simple requests (water, lemon, etc.). She did not have food or drink recommendations, and her standard response was, "Everything's good here" to our party and the table next to us. When my friend asked about the cheesy bread we ordered that took forever, she responded, "They're on it. Would you like me to yell at the kitchen?!" I also caught her talking about us to her co-workers. We also noticed that despite the staff being over-extended and perhaps frustrated, the guy who appeared to be the manager was not helping much and spent his time ch a thing with customers seated at the bar. I didn't want to make a big fuss that evening, especially since my generous friends were excited to take me here, but our almost $400 bill was in no way proportional to the quality of experience in this restaurant. The ambience is good, the location is perfect, and the cakes are sinful, but those are not enough to redeem this restaurant from the doom its service brings. It is unfortunate that this charming town has no other fine dining establishment, especially since it deserves a good one. read more

Nestled at the bottom floor of a quaint building in downtown new roads, ma mama's is a gem worthy of big city acclaim. The restaurant is located in a historic building with beautiful Cyprus woodwork. It is one of the top local recommended lunch and dinner restaurants in the area. The restaurant is located directly across from the marina and boat launch along False river. Street parking is plentiful and a parking lot is directly across the street. We arrived early for dinner and the restaurant was already packed so we sat at the bar. The staff was extremely pleasent and accomadating. In fact everyone in the restaurant helped our every need. We ended up ordering seafood pasta and fried oysters. Both dishes were very fresh and made perfectly. They came with yeast bread rolls that went very well with the seafood dishes. The best part was definitely dessert. Triple layer strawberry pound cake and the chocolate cake were both around a foot high. Also the heaping scoops of custordy bread pudding with some delightful sauce was truly a pleasure for my taste buds. We strongly recommend Ma Mama's next time you are down in point coupe parish. Come early and come hungry because the portions are huge and the food is delicious to the last bite!!! read more

Sweet atmosphere and waitstaff :) Quality of the food seems to have dipped in the past year though.

We had a reservation for early Saturday night, Were seated right away, then waited to have our drink order taken and then waited again to get our drinks, which were brought out one at a time. I had an Old Fashioned and it was excellent even with the wait. Service was off all night and the servers were constantly apologizing. Though its not their fault when the management does not bring in more help when they know every table has been reserved. There's definitely a major hit and miss with the food here. We started with the Mamma's bread which was fresh, hot and served with a olive oil dipping sauce - delicious. Then I ordered the Grits & Grillades. Big mistake. The grits had a very off flavor, maybe some herb they were attempting to fancy it up with but instead rendered it inedible. The grillades were nothing of the such, resembling a mediocre beef stew. A truly disappointing dish. Elsewhere around our table, my wife had a paneed veal dish that was over breaded and tasted flat. Our friends had fish dishes which they said were very good. My hopes were up for dessert as I had been told they make great cakes here, again though disappointment. We split a praline chocolate cake, that was dry and tasted like they had poured Hersey's syrup on it. I wish I could give this place a better review but our food was just not very good. Also on the night we were there it was very, very loud. I can't see returning here. read more

Ask for Angie I have been eating at this restaurant for most of my life. I have watched them mature and become one of the best places I have eaten in the United States. I would suggest first timers go for the chicken Pointe Coupee, The portabella Mushroom, or Oyster Bienville/Rockefeller/combo. salad wedge or lobster bisque "best you ever had" as a starter anything that is on the special menu is probably awesome. I do find it quite pricey and the portions have def slimmed up in the past few years. this is why I cant give it 5 stars. but other than that get ready for a fine dinning experience in a quaint little town littered with historic homes and buildings. As a lover of fine dining across the country I am pleased to say that Ma Mama's Kitchen in New Roads is still my favorite restaurant hands down. That being said, let's make one thing clear: If you're looking for an inexpensive special and service that will rush you in and out of the door as soon as possible, then this isn't the place for you. If, on the other hand, you are willing to drive, pay, and wait patiently for each course as you experience one of the gastronomical highlights of your life then definitely make the trip out to Ma Mama's. Out of all of my visits some of the most impressive dishes have been the stuffed mushrooms, the bleu cheese wedge salad (seriously, how do they make the dressing that creamy and delicious?!?), and the stuffed fish dishes.
